How the snowy owl took Cape May by storm! Opposite page: Cape May-based birder and photographer Richard Crossley shot these photos of the snowy owl, a bird that caused a nationwide PR blitz after a major series of sightings in Cape May last fall. “It was the biggest influx of snowy owls in memory,” says Crossley. Why? Due to a glut of lemmings in Arctic breeding grounds the snowy owl population exploded. “They’re a mythical bird — see Harry Potter — and when they come south in such great numbers, everyone gets excited, including the press and nonbirders,” says Crossley.
