TORAH CONNECTS

Torah connects us all, and it is our responsibility to maintain that connection. This year, as part of our 160th Anniversary Celebration and in honor of our Holocaust Scroll’s 50th year in our care, all of our sifrei Torah (Torah scrolls) will be meticulously restored by an expert sofer (Torah scribe). The restoration of our sifrei Torah is an amazing opportunity to actively connect with Torah, our community’s history, and learn about the Torah restoration process. Throughout the new year, CBI will be hosting several educational and Torah letter fill-in events with our visiting sofer. We invite all CBI families to connect with Torah through these events, culminating with the experience of holding a quill with the sofer. Our first event is scheduled for Sunday, February 24 and our second event is on Sunday, March 10. Stay tuned, additional dates and information will be released in the near future.

Torah Connects by Ben Sandler, RJE Education Director Our Torah journey continues this year as we excitedly anticipate visits from the expert soferim (Torah scribes) who will restore our Torah scrolls. Every CBI family will have the chance to learn from the scribes and literally write themselves into CBI’s rich history and vibrant present during our upcoming Torah letter fill-in events. In preparation for the scribe’s visits, and as part of this year’s overall educational theme of “Torah Connects,” our Religious

School curriculum (with the support of Sofer on Site) will help our students engage with Torah in new ways, providing knowledge and inspiration for lifelong Jewish learning and practice. These topics will be Torah’s holiness, the tools of the sofer, Hebrew letters and scribing letters, books of the Torah and our Jewish calendar, mitzvot and history, and Hebrew names. Through developmentally-appropriate lessons and activities, each student will find their own interests, questions, and connections with our sacred text. In the introduction of our new Sofer on Site Torah curriculum we read: Our sages tell us that “There are seventy faces to Torah.” One can find

endless paths to teaching and learning Torah. Hafach Bah Vehafach Bah Ki Kulah Bah-Turn it (the Torah) and turn it for all is in it. The wonder and beauty of this Torah is unique, not only in its intellectual insight but also in its moral and spiritual inspiration. Through our participation in the Torah letter fill-in events, and classroom and community learning opportunities, may each one of us find a facet of Torah that speaks to our heart and inspires us to be our best selves. L’Shalom, Ben

OUR LEADERSHIP

Continuing the March A few weeks ago, Cantor Cahana and I participated in a dialogue with members of the local NAACP chapter and the Jewish Community Relations Council. The JCRC, a committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, has several interfaith dialogue groups, but this new one is very special. We were reminded, over a lovely dinner, about the historic relationship between the Jewish and the AfricanAmerican community during the Civil Rights era. Among the founders of the NAACP in 1909 were African-American heroes such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Jewish leaders such as Dr. Henry Moscowitz. Half a century later, rabbis and other Jewish leaders famously marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his call to the American conscience. My father was among a group of nineteen Conservative Rabbis who in 1963 answered Dr. King’s call and abruptly left their rabbinic convention in the Catskills to fly to Birmingham, Alabama. There they were joined by the great Jewish

leader Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Together rabbis and preachers, priests and laypeople gave out a spiritual call for justice. In the words of Dr. Heschel, they “prayed with their feet.” Today, fifty-five years later, we continue that march. For far too many, justice has not yet come. For far too many continue to experience racism and anti-Semitism – along with homophobia, Islamophobia and other forms of hate. We stand linked with those who continue the call for justice. For well over a decade now, Congregation Beth Israel has hosted an annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat Service which brings together gospel and Jewish music, and helps to break down some of the barriers that have arisen over the decades between our two communities. We have been honored with wonderful music and meaningful keynote speakers such as former Oregon State Senator Margaret Carter, Rabbi Cy Dresner and US Representative John Lewis. This year, thanks to the Oseran family who agreed to combine our annual Oseran Family Lecture with our MLK Shabbat, our guest speaker will be noted

author and criminal justice advocate, Bryan Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson is the author of Just Mercy which is an account of his experiences as a young AfricanAmerican attorney in the South, trying to help exonerate wrongly convicted inmates. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama. Please be sure to join all our community at this very special Shabbat Service, Friday January 18 at 6:00 PM. Young people are welcome, particularly teens, to experience this meaningful Shabbat.

UPCOMING EVENTS SISTERHOOD

ADULT EDUCATION

Whose Names Are Included in the Oregon Jewish Story? Thursday, January 24, 7:00 PM Pollin Chapel Professor Ellen Eisenberg will present a fascinating view of our community’s postwar years, with a special focus on CBI congregants (yes, she’ll name names – maybe even yours!). Many CBI members and others in the Jewish community were directly impacted during that era by the dispersal forced by urban renewal, the changing role of women in synagogues, and the immigration of Soviet Jews. More significant for the wider community has been the leadership and engagement of Jewish Oregonians, including CBIers, in civic action for social justice. Ellen Eisenberg is a recognized scholar of American and Jewish history. She has taught at Willamette University since 1990 and holds the Dwight and Margaret Lear Chair in American History. She has authored or co-authored more than five books on American Jewish history. The Oregon Jewish Story 1950-2010, her newest book, documents the evolution and adaptations of Oregon’s Jewish community through many of the social changes of that era. We will have copies of the book for sale and Professor Eisenberg will be happy to sign them.

Noah John Margolis Elkanich will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Noah is the son of David Elkanich and Amy Margolis. His stepparents are Lauren Elkanich and Matt Mader. He has two younger brothers, Samuel and Ari Elkanich. Noah’s grandparents are Jeff and Judy Margolis of Portland, and George and Linda Elkanich of Phoenix, Arizona. A seventh grader at Cedarwood Waldorf School, Noah is a competitive swimmer as a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) swim team, and spends much of his time at practice or at swim meets. In his spare time, Noah enjoys spending time with friends, playing with his younger brothers, watching movies and playing video games. For his Mitzvah Project, Noah is raising money for The Pixie Project, a non-profit animal adoption center and rescue in Portland. It offers a variety of services to the public, including pet adoption services, pet owner education and support, and low-cost and free spay and neuter and veterinary services for homeless and low-income pet owners.

Aden Bradley Szlukier will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, February 23, 2019. Aden is the son of Mark and Caroline Szlukier and brother of Nathanial and Zachary. VERY THOUGHTFUL PEOPLE

CBI TRIBUTE FUND SPOTLIGHT:

Oseran Family Lecture Fund

This year, for the first time ever, two of the highlights of the CBI annual calendar will come together as we welcome our 2019 Oseran Family Lecture Series speaker, acclaimed author, attorney, and activist Bryan Stevenson to address the CBI and greater Portland communities at our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat Service. The presence of this nationally acclaimed speaker—as well as his predecessors, including Robert Reich and E.J. Dionne—is made possible through the the Oseran Family Lecture Fund. Our deep appreciation to the Oseran family for establishing this fund and the lecture series it supports, and to all our generous donors who contribute to it.
