Early Childhood

AT THE

Conservatory

Suzuki Program Concordia Conservatory offers Suzuki instruction in cello, guitar, and violin for children as young as age three. As in the traditional method of instruction, students are given weekly private lessons with one of our faculty members and attend weekly group classes to further develop their musical skills. Parents and caregivers also participate, attend lessons and classes, and supervise home practice. The Suzuki method of music education is now a well-established pedagogical technique. Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, a western-trained professional violinist, developed the system to give musical instruction to the children of postwar Japan. • Students age three and above may enroll in the Suzuki Program. • T he parent/caregiver is actively involved in all aspects of the child’s musical development, attends all lessons and classes, and receives training to be a home teacher. • No prior musical experience is necessary. • The tuition includes 16 weekly private lessons and 12 weekly group lessons. Tuition: $ 760 (16 20-minute private lessons / 12 group classes / 1 semester or year-long) $ 950 (16 30-minute private lessons / 12 group classes / 1 semester or year-long) $ 1,440 (16 45-minute private lessons / 12 group classes / 1 semester or year-long

Music Classes Concordia Conservatory embraces the philosophy that all children are musical and therefore can achieve basic music competence, and that the best learning environment is one that is playful, developmentally appropriate, and musically rich. Listening, singing, moving, and playing percussion instruments are key activities leading to reading and notating music. Through creative, engaging music play, children are given the foundation for a comprehensive music education and the tools to express themselves artistically.

Music Babies Designed for the 6–17 month old child, teachers guide adults in fostering the music development of babies through singing and chanting, rhythmic taps and claps, tickles and wiggles, and bouncing and rocking. Through group participation with small percussion instruments and engaging props, the babies’ innate abilities are heightened for an early start on tuning their ears to the joy of music. Ages: 6–17 months 15 classes or year-long Tuition: $350 (15 classes)

Music Toddlers These classes offer an opportunity for adults and young children to experience the pleasures of group music-making. Teachers guide the class in exploring the elements of music through folk song favorites, fingerplays, chants, nursery rhymes, rhythmic bounces, lullabies, and a variety of playful movement activities. Small percussion instruments, engaging props, and storytelling experiences provide sequential music learning in an appropriately structured setting. Ages: 18–24 months 15 classes or year-long Tuition: $350 (15 classes)

Music for Twos Through movement, singing, listening, and playing instruments, children experience the joys of music-making with favorite melodies, fingerplays, rhythmic chants, and international folk songs. The classroom environment is musically stimulating and encourages exploration, interaction, and discovery. Ages: 2 –3 15 classes or year-long Tuition: $350 (15 classes)

Hear It Live Hear It Live is Concordia Conservatory’s spring showcase concert for any student composer in elementary, middle, and high school. In this community-wide event, and students need not study at Concordia Conservatory to participate. The Conservatory provides instrumentalists, records the concert, and distributes the recordings to the participants. The Conservatory also provides a prize to the most accomplished work(s) on the program, adjudicated by a consortium of composer educators. Visit Concordia Conservatory’s Composition & Songwriting page for more information on participating.

Songwriting and Composition Intensive Directed by composer, teacher and pianist Matt Van Brink, the Conservatory’s Songwriting & Composition camps offer talented middle and high school composers and songwriters the special opportunity to focus solely on exploring and refining their compositional skills. In these two six-week summer programs, students receive private composition lessons, classes in analysis, score-reading, theory, and aural skills, and the opportunity to collaborate with professional musicians in creating new works. During the camps, students write pieces for small ensembles which are then performed and recorded in a full evening concert, providing an invaluable learning tool and record of their achievement.

Our group early childhood music classes inspire creative learning as children enjoy singing, moving, using props, and playing instruments. Music Time classes are adult/child experiences. These classes offer an opportunity for adults and young children to experience the pleasures of group music-making. Teachers guide the class in exploring the elements of music through folk song favorites, fingerplays, chants, nursery rhymes, rhythmic bounces, lullabies and a variety of playful movement activities. Small percussion instruments, engaging props and storytelling experiences provide sequential music learning in an appropriately structured setting. Designed for ages 6 months to 3 years these musical activities provide an early start on tuning their ears to the joy of music.
