Event Guide

October 28, 2012

Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

See Larry run L.A. with Team ASPCA ! ®

Before: February 2012

At first, the dogs “would cower to the ground when they were removed from their kennels,” recalls ASPCA Senior Behavior and Training Manager Victoria W. “Once the vets gave the medical okay, they were paired up with each other and more confident dogs for play sessions and walks to expose them to new people and places. They slowly began to overcome their fear.” They even made a special friend in Kim D., a licensed veterinary technician. When the dogs were ready to move to foster homes, Kim brought Lacey to the home she shared with her Rottweiler Charlie. As she invested lots of time teaching Lacey that new people and places were exciting, not scary, Lacey became an irreplaceable member of the family. Since then, Kim’s family has moved to San Francisco, where Frankie (Lacey’s new name!) loves running on the beach, sunbathing on her deck and taking boat rides. Kim reports that “now she’s the happiest dog in the world. She and Charlie sleep curled up with each other every night. She’s not afraid of a thing.” For more information or to join Team ASPCA, please visit www.teamaspca.org

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL LOS ANGELES® HALLOWEEN HALF MARATHON BENEFITING THE ASPCA®

When ASPCA® Special Agent Ann K. brought hound mix puppies Cagney and Lacey to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, the two were so skinny - their bones were visible from across the room. Under the care of our veterinary professionals, the frightened dogs put on weight quickly: Cagney went from 16.4 to 27.1 pounds, and Lacey from 15.2 to 26.9.

Endurance athletes, trainers and sports nutrition experts all know the importance of an athlete’s after. Every athlete has his or her own after-workout or after-competition ritual, and your After can make a dramatic difference in how you feel and how you perform during your next tough workout. That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:

–Mirinda Carfrae, 2010 Ironman World Champion

• A natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair lean muscle. • The right carb-to-protein ratio scientifically shown to refuel exhausted muscles. • Fluids and electrolytes – including calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium – to help replenish what’s lost in sweat.

GET SPONSORED If you’re a passionate athlete who grabs lowfat chocolate milk as part of your After, submit a video and get your friends and fans to vote for you to secure a spot on Team REFUEL. Explain what makes up your personal after-workout ritual – and the role chocolate milk plays in it – and you could score: • $500 sponsorship • Top notch Team REFUEL training gear • Chance to compete for Team REFUEL at the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh or Madrid Marathon & 1/2 • Chance to star in a national “got chocolate milk?TM” ad $1 will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for each vote. Adam’s Attic Brought together by a passion for music and unity in the face of adversity, Adam’s Attic inspires listeners with an honest and open sound. From their base roots in New Orleans to their current home of Los Angeles, the alternative, pop/rock band has matured musically and captivated audiences on a global scale. The group has seized one success after another by headlining numerous sold out shows at the House of Blues and Hard Rock Cafe, touring four different continents and playing for crowds exceeding 11,000. With the accumulation of small successes that led to becoming darlings of New Orleans, Adam’s Attic is a rising star in the world market.

Zen Boogie Zen Boogie is a band built around the music of Los Angeles born and bred Robert Linden, and the music that inspires his music. The band also features Bob Helfant (guitar), Doug Snyder (Bass), Bob Girnius (Drums) and Larry O. Williams (Sax). Robert leads the band with his energetic style and his sardonic story-telling... always keeping the crowd locked in tight! They received the Malibu Music Award for “Best Jazz Ensemble” in 2009, and were recently nominated for the Los Angeles Music Award in Jazz. Zen Boogie received rave reviews for their first album, “Beginnings The Early Live Recordings” and is working on the band’s second and what will be their first studio-recorded album.

Young Beautiful in a Hurry Young Beautiful in a Hurry is a high energy foursome, dedicated to bringing you all organic thoroughbred rock/pop tunes, with a dash of glam you haven’t heard this side of the late 70s. Their influences range mainly from Bowie & Queen, with a little Elvis mixed in to sweeten the deal. YBH just turned one in January and has been very busy in their first year, releasing their debut record, playing the Troubadour, and opening for Steel Panther at the House of Blues. Their songs have been heard on TV shows such as 90210, Human Target and Trauma.

EVENT GUIDE DESTINATION LA 30

From the Hollywood Sign to the Stars on Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles is a great destination to take in the sights and hope for a glimpse of your favorite celebrity! With the Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles Halloween Half Marathon benefiting the ASPCA coming to town, we’ve combined the excitement of running a halfmarathon with the thrills of Halloween. Here are a few highlights you can expect to see while you rock the run in Los Angeles.

The Coliseum opened its doors in June of 1923 and on Oct. 6, 1923, the first football game was played.

The University of Southern California hosted Pomona College before a crowd of 12,836, and prevailed, 23-7. It was a modest beginning for a venue that would later play a prominent role in college and professional football. The Coliseum is the only stadium to have hosted the Olympic Games twice (X and XXIII), two Super Bowls (I and VII) and one World Series (1959).

L.A. LIVE

L.A. LIVE is an entertainment complex in downtown Los Angeles adjacent to the Staples Center. L.A. LIVE has 5.6 million square feet of apartments, ballrooms, bars, concert theatres, restaurants, movie theaters and a 54-story hotel and condominium tower, on a 27-acre site. L.A. EVENT GUIDE RESPECT THE DISTANCE 34

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

ADVICE FROM THE ROCK 'N' ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.

TRAIN

It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

HYDRATE

If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..

SALT

Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

PLEASE

Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!

If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…
