January 2012 Results The American Dream Composite Index™ in January 2012 is 63.96, an increase of 1.46% compared the previous month reading of 63.04 in December 2011. For the month of January, the five components of the ADCI performed as follows: the American Dream Economic Index™ was 62.00 (+1.86% from December), the American Dream Well-Being Index™ was 69.48 (+1.74% from December), the American Dream Societal Index™ was 52.84 (+1.77% from December), the American Dream Diversity Index ™ was 73.53 (+0.29% from December), and the American Dream Environment Index™ (ADEVI) was 67.94 (-2.33% from December). The American Dream Economic Index™ (ADEI) increased by 1.86% from its 60.87 reading in December 2011. This increase in the Economic Index was a result of relatively high levels of satisfaction with all its dimensions except for Access to Education. In particular, the dimensions of the Economic Index that increased relative to its December 2011 reading include: Financial Security, Material Prosperity, Home Ownership, Health Care, Freedom of Choice, Generational Progress, Job Environment, Job Benefits, and Destinations in Life. The American Dream Well-Being Index™ (ADWI) increased by 1.74% from its 68.29 reading in December 2011. Survey respondents reported an increase in almost all of the dimensions of personal well-being. The largest increases were seen in one’s Social Status, Family Support, Support of Someone Special, Support of Friends, Fruits of One’s Labor, and Social Status. In addition, there were increases in the level of satisfaction with Freedom of Expression, Happiness, Optimism, and the ability to pursue leisure activities, and Personal Health. There

were very modest declines in Entrepreneurial Spirit and Satisfaction with One’s Residence. The American Dream Societal Index™ (ADSI) experienced an increase of 1.77% from its 51.92 reading in December 2011. The increase in the ADSI was a result of substantially favorable responses with regard to Civic Participation, Trust in Government, Trust in Businesses, and Trust in People. There was an increase in the level of satisfaction with Education Quality, Safety in Travel, and Justice in Society. However, there was a marginal decrease in the level of satisfaction with Safety in Community. The American Dream Diversity Index™ (ADDI) recorded an increase of 0.29% from its December 2012 reading of 73.32. This increase reflects relatively higher levels of the respondents’ view of their attitudes towards diversity, diversity within their neighborhood, and political freedom. However, there was a decrease in the respondents’ view of those who are different from themselves. The American Dream Environment Index™ (ADEVI) decreased by 2.33% from its December 2012 reading of 69.56. The decrease in the ADEVI was a result of lower levels of satisfaction with air quality, water quality, quality of food, noise pollution, sewage and sanitation, and waste disposal.
