The Observant Jew

Don’t Forget to Write RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ

I

’d like to share with you a beautiful e-mail I received from my daughter while she was on her graduation trip to Washington D.C. (It stands for ‘De Capital,’ in case you didn’t know.) Dear Daddy, I am having an amazing time on this trip. We’ve been to the Capitol, the White House, and the Washington Monument. We’ve visited the Smithsonian, the FBI museum, and the Holocaust museum. At Arlington cemetery, we saw JFK’s grave as well as some Jewish soldiers’ graves. Oh, we went for a boat ride on the Potomac River and had a blast! I just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for making this trip possible. I know it wasn’t cheap and you made sure I had extra food and cash for ‘just in case’ occasions. I really appreciate you doing this for me. You are the best father in the entire universe. I love you!

I’d like to share that e-mail with you, but I can’t -- because she never wrote it. I’m not upset that she didn’t. I don’t begrudge her that because she’s young, excited about being with her friends on a new adventure, and she was busy doing whatever her class was doing. I did get a few text messages from her. One or two were pictures of where they went but mostly the messages were about something she needed or that someone had said something mean to her. She didn’t come to me to share her joy; just her frustrations and wants. But that’s OK. I’m her father

10

and that’s what I’m here for. Sure, I would have liked to be part of the moment, with her telling me about her day, and it would have been nice to hear that praise. However, it seemed that the only time she felt the need to communicate with me was when she needed something. And that’s when a light-bulb went on in my head and I realized that I’m the same way. I often say that HaShem is called our father so that when we have experiences as parents, we can relate to Him better. Now, I as a father was having this experience, and it made me think of it from HaShem’s perspective. He sends each of us on a trip to visit Earth. He signs the waivers, prepares our bags, drops us off, and slips us a little extra from time to time to help keep us happy and comfortable. He worries about us and if anything will happen to us along the way. He wants us to have a good time and enjoy ourselves. As we set off on this expedition with HaShem as our corporate sponsor, we begin our exploration and we know quite well to whom we owe it all. We know that if not for HaShem nothing would be possible. But we get so wrapped up in the excitement of life that we may forget to radio back to base and write home to Papa. Then things don’t go as smoothly as we’d like. Things take an unexpected turn, or we’re just unsure of what to do, so we pray. We say, “HaShem, I need this.” We say, “Please help me with this difficulty,” and we

www.thejewishlink.com

info@thejewishlink.com

might mention, “So-and-so was bothering me.” Like a child, we’re so focused on getting through our trip and doing all there is to do that we get busy and don’t focus on saying thank you as much as we should. When something good happens, we don’t always jump to say, “Wow, G-d, You were so amazing to do that for me.” We’re not sending those letters home as often as we might nor are we sharing the joy of our lives with HaShem “simply because we know He wants to hear it.” We need to get in the habit of saying, “Baruch HaShem!” when things go well, and actually articulating our appreciation. “Thank you HaShem for being able to walk, talk, breathe, see, hear, etc. etc.” “Baruch HaShem, that was a close call but You saved me.” If it was your child you’d want it, so why should HaShem, our Father in Heaven, desire anything less? When you give a gift you like to hear the person enjoyed it. When you teach someone you enjoy knowing that it meant something to him. We are givers yet we like to receive feedback. That’s because it lets us know our gift is appreciated.

HaShem is the ultimate giver and it’s safe to assume that He would enjoy positive feedback. Yes He ‘knows’ that we are enjoying, but He wants us to realize how much we should appreciate it and write those thank you notes home. He wants to hear us say, “Thank you, I love you Daddy.” So, as you live your life, don’t forget to write often and let Him know how you feel. After all, He IS the greatest Father in the Universe.

Like a child, we’re so focused on getting through our trip and doing all there is to do that we get busy and don’t focus on saying thank you as much as we should.

Jewish Contributions Celebrated on Capitol Hill The Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building was packed with more than 200 legislators, Jewish leaders and their supporters who participated in a bi-partisan celebration of American Jewish Heritage Month to recognize the many contributions of the Jewish people to the United States.

s President Ronald Reagan declared in 1981, when he first established Jewish Heritage week, “American Jews have contributed significantly to the spiritual and cultural elevation of our society since the founding of our Nation. Jewish immigrants and their descendants have brought dignity and distinction to every field of American endeavor. Our Jewish citizens have served America by fighting for her freedom, building her industry, striving for her goals, and nurturing her dreams.” In 2006, President George W. Bush proclaimed May as Jewish American Heritage Month, an initiative led by Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the late Senator Arlen Specter. Each subsequent President has continued this tradition. The Friedlander Group and Project Legacy have been sponsoring a special tribute on Capitol Hill for the last several years. Among those feted this week were Holocaust survivor and author of the www.thejewishlink.com

acclaimed book, A Candle in the Heart, Judith Kallman of Greenwich, CT, who was lauded for her efforts to convince students to stop the hate by Senator Richard Blumenthal; Chief Rabbi of the Bukharan Jewish community, Itzhak Yehoshua, the President of the Bukharian Rabbinical Council of America, who immigrated to the United States in 1987, and successfully built the American Bukharian community from what was once a small group into a vast community with over 65,000 members; an accomplishment lauded in a Senate Resolution introduced in honor of Jewish Heritage Month. It was pointed put by Senator Blumenthal and others that the “Bukharian community has ancient roots in Central Asia, and after the fall of the Soviet Union, many immigrated to the United States seeking a better life free from oppression. Under Rabbi Yehoshua’s leadership, the Bukharian community demonstrates how immigrants integrate into American life while preserving

their unique culture and traditions”. To recognize the importance of civil rights, the program featured Mark Meyer Appel, founder of The Bridge Multicultural and Advocacy Project, an organization that unites people of every racial, ethnic, cultural and religious background. As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” Selma March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge an event that was a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement, in which countless Jews were involved. Being true to that legacy, American Jews like Mark Meyer Appel remain devoted to advancing civil rights for all Americans and bridging the divide between different communities. Indeed, Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III, (D-Mass) who made that presentation and appropriate in light of him being the grandson of Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a major figure in the civil rights movement. Also honored was AISH International, one of the largest Jewish outreach organizations of its kind in the world, which aims to connect Jews to their anJune 2015 •

In the words, Senate Resolution AISH was singled out for praise for reinforcing “that in the United States, people may freely connect with their culture and religious heritage and contribute to the fabric of life in the United States”. Several of their supporters received special recognition including: Ruth Hyman, Bob and Michelle Diener, Gary M. and Pennie Abramson. Emceed with a strong dose of humor by Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, Executive Vice President of the New York Board of Rab-

bis, and Greg Rosenbaum who chairs the Jewish Heritage Month Celebration the event included a list of impressive speakers from both houses of Congress and both sides of the aisle. The standing ovation of the day was given to Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights hero who came to the microphone and remembered the marches in the south, reciting the words of the Bible and the lyrics of the classic, “Let My People Go”. He reminded those in the audience of the days when Jews marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for human rights, and recalled three young men he knew who did not die in Vietnam. They did not die in the Middle East or in another foreign country fighting for freedom-they were arrested and lynched fighting for freedom in the United States. They were Andrew Goodman, Mickey Schwerner and James Earl Chaney, lynched by the KKK in 1964. Another speech that earned a standing ovation was the speech by Mrs. Kallman. As a child, she and her siblings became fugitives of the Third Reich after they witnessed their parents and older siblings get into a cattle car headed for Auschwitz. She survived thanks to the kindness of strangers and ended her odyssey from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, England, and Israel to come to America, where, she said, “Here I discovered that life is indeed beautiful and that I can enjoy my family and love deeply. I owe that ability to my parents, of blessed memory, who lavished the best of their love, hope and care upon me from the moment I appeared in their lives. And I owe it to the freedom I found in America, a freedom from fear that allowed me to raise my children in peace, to practice Judaism without shame. How does one say ‘thank you’ for that?” Other speakers were Sen. Bill Cassidy, Sen.Tim Kaine, Sen. Kelly Ayotte , Sen. Ron Johnson, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Rep. Eliot Engel, Sen. Ben Sasse, Rep. Ted Deutch; Rep. Lee Zeldin.

Valley Friendship Circle Summer and Beyond... By C.G.

T

he Valley Friendship Circle (VFC) “Esmach Summer Circle for Girls” (ESC), began four years ago in honor of two young sisters who lived their lives in a positive and loving way. Their Hebrew names are the acronyms for this unique program that invites girls with special needs and their sisters to participate. With the initial grant, and continued support from their brother Moshe and family, we began an annual week-long summer circle, celebrating the joy and beauty of girls and friendship. Charlotte Kramon, a 13 year old volunteer, whose parents, Josh & Jen are proud supporters of the Summer Circle program, describes friendship like this, “When someone you don’t know very well comes up to you and wants to be your friend at school or camp, it means so much, because she doesn’t have to show interest, but she is choosing to, because she clearly wants a connection.” She continues,“When I saw a girl in tears of joy because people were focusing their love towards her, and when I saw a sparkle in a girl’s eyes when I said I was impressed with her dance trick, it touched me as well. At the VFC Girls Summer Circle, the girls have learned to see even more beauty in themselves than they have before.” “It is a warm and safe environment where we make girls feel really special and lasting friendships are created.” says Mrs. Marla Feinberg, a former director for Girls Scouts - now a volunteer Program Coordinator with VFC. The program is designed with ex24

Baitelman, “I look forward to attending Summer Circle every year! I have so much fun, and I have met a friend who I have kept as a pen pal. Summer Circle is the best as it’s somewhere my sister and I can share together.” Many of the participants and volunteers are also active with families and teens who are part of the Friends@ Home program throughout the year. Serving the San Fernando Valley, Friends@Home provides respite for parents as teen volunteers from local area private and public schools, commit weekly to creating a beautiful bond with a child, pre-teen or teen, through shared fun and activities. Jesse, a volunteer who was unsure of his ability to help a child with special needs, wrote in an essay describing his volunteer experience, “I love David and

I know he loves me too. Although he is not very verbal, I can tell from the hugs and the laughs and the smiles.” Inclusiveness is a high priority at VFC. Holidays, Shabbat & Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, are celebrated together by VFC families and volunteers with the Chabad of Studio City community, under the guidance of Shluchim, Rabbi Yossi & Chanie Baitelman. For a recent Bat Mitzvah, community members who had never met Emily, came together to ensure that she had everything necessary for a beautiful affair. It was a truly emotional and memorable evening for everyone who helped her reach this milestone. “Jeremy’s Journey”, a video clip about the experience he had with VFC and his accomplishments, can be viewed at www.ValleyFriendshipCircle.com. Torah and Tea

A Celebration of Life O

n the evening of Monday, June 8th (21 Sivan), Bais Chaya Mushka of Los Angeles’s fourth floor dining room was transformed into a chic, French patisserie. Over two hundred mothers, grandmothers, and women from all sectors of LA’s Jewish community packed the room, decorated expertly in baby pink, black, and white by Mrs. Rivka Baitelman. Torah and Tea, now in its second annual year, was an event put on by the Bais Chaya Mushka Mother’s Association, created as a way to connect with other women in the community, celebrate Jewish femininity, and learn some inspirational words of Torah. Virtually every dessert imaginable was served, including individually customized French crepes, and all were accompanied by various teas, artesian iced coffee, and fruit. Mrs. Chanie Perelmutter was the program’s enthusiastic MC, and Mrs. Shaindy Jacobson, a Bais Chaya Mushka bubby, traveled all the way from New York to deliver a moving and inspirational speech about the power of paying it forward, and the little things that each of us can do in order to bring Moshiach speedily in our time. Following the beautiful words, Bais Rebbe Junior High School’s sixth grade class debuted a moving original song and video presentation, honoring their beloved classmate, Chaya Spalter, Z”L. The emotional evening ended on an exciting note with a fabulous raf-

Sefer Parnassah K’Halacha Gedolei Yisroel Mesmerized by Revolutionary Sefer Parnassah K’Halacha on Monetary Halacha

E

retz Yisroel’s leading gedolei Yisroel and dayanim on Hilchos Choshen Mishpat welcomed with open arms Reb Duvi Honig, Founder and Director of Parnassah Network as he showcased the revolutionary new Sefer Parnassah K’Halacha. Sefer Parnassah K’Halacha, a project of Business Kollel Network, a division of Parnassah Network , puts practical monetary halacha within the public’s grasp like never before. Page by page, beside the original text of Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat, each halacha is translated and explained in simple language with its meforshim, and practical scenarios where they apply are discussed with each Halacha. There are editions in both Lashon Kodesh and English, each beautifully laid out and easy to peruse. Some of the gedolim and rabbanim that Reb Duvi visited include Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlit”a, Rav Dov Yaffe shlit”a, Rav Asher Weiss shlit”a, Rav Sariel Rosenberg shlit”a, Rav Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg shlit”a and Rav Mendel Shafran shlit”a. Each of them was exceptionally impressed by the Sefer, and alluded to how needed it is in

today’s generation. Monetary Halacha is a grave matter that applies to everyone, whether in Yeshiva or in the business world, and many key halachos aren’t well known. Rav Goldberg wrote in his haskama, “It is impossible to properly explain how much this benefits klal Yisroel.” Sefer Parnassah K’Halacha was prepared and published as part of an extensive and ongoing project by a special Machon of 20 leading talmidei chachamim in the arena of monetary halacha, along with professional Sefarim writers and editors, which was established and directed by Parnassah Network – Business kollel Network. The first volume that is ready for publication delves into Hilchos sechiras poalim. Many more volumes will b’ezras Hashem follow in the months and years ahead. “Sefer Parnassah K’Halacha can do for hilchos Choshen Mishpat similar to what Mishna Berurah did for Orach Chaim, b’ezras Hashem,” says Reb Duvi Honig. “One cannot earn parnassah or deal in any monetary transaction as a Torah Jew without the proper knowledge.” For more information or for sponsorship opportunities, please contact duvi@parnassahexpo.com

A Light Unto the Nations International relief organizations observe Israel’s national emergency preparedness drills

W

hat would happen if missiles struck a school in central Israel, G-d forbid? Eighty doctors, paramedics and EMTs from United Hatzalah on June 2 simulated this catastrophe, testing how volunteers might react and developing best practices if such a situation was to occur. Joined by volunteers from ZAKA, the responders worked under blasts of fireworks, smoke grenades and flocks of screaming children to treat and evacuate 500 children. Not only did they employ medical equipment, triage strategies and a cutting edge Mobile Command and Control Center in the training exercise, but they were joined by international observers wanting to learn how to implement effective emergency responses. Delegates from Singapore’s national emergency services, International Committee of the Red Cross, USAID and other agencies watched the exercise, which was one of many tests as part of Israel’s five-day Turning Point 15 civil defense drill operated by the National Emergency Authority and the Home Front Command. The spectators attended to learn from United Hatzalah’s extensive experience in community-based emergency medical first response. “I am always very impressed whenever I look at exercises like this, because it is just to ensure that the community is protected,” said Wong Mum Thong, chief consultant of Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs Crisis Preparedness Directorate. “What I can

The Command Control gives very clear visibility in terms of the assets that you deploy and I think that is the most important thing; tracking the resources that you deploy so that you could be able to redeploy these resources. If you don’t have that visibility, you have a problem.” The United Hatzalah Mo-

bile Command and Control Center is a man-portable self-contained power and communication unit that deploys LifeCompass technology capable of mapping incidents and dispatching responders from any location and under any circumstances. Eli Beer, president and CEO of United Hatzalah, “Anytime, at any moment, these disasters can happen. Unfortunately in Israel we are so used to every once in a while having a war or a missile attack so we want to make sure that our volunteers, who are professionally trained to treat incidents like car accidents, heart attacks, strokes and children downing, should know how to deal with any type of emergency including multi-causality incidents. When something like a missile attack happens, the first who will actually save and help are the neighbors and the people around the neighborhood. These are United Hatzalah volunteers

who are spread all around the country in every neighborhood in every street so we train them to be ready for these disasters.” “I always look at community based first response as being the most important,” added Thong. “We need to bear in mind that the emergency response team that comes to the incident site could be delayed for various reasons – it could be delayed by traffic, by many other reasons – so the first person to be on the scene will be the one that comes from the community, and they are the people who will be in the best position to render first responses.” United Hatzalah operates a free network of 2,500 volunteer trained medics and emergency responders serving communities across Israel around the clock. In recent months, the organization has gained international recognition for its relief efforts in disasters worldwide, including

most recently in Nepal, and for developing the advanced LifeCompass platform, which integrates mapping, GPS technology, photos and video to improve emergency response worldwide. Community-based response groups in the U.S, South America, Europe and Asia now are deploying these methods, developed in Israel, locally.

Golan Heights Winery Releases 2011 Yarden Katzrin

G

olan Heights Winery, the leading premium winery in Israel, has released the 2011 Yarden Katzrin. The flagship wine is only produced from grapes harvested during the most outstanding vintages. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and Merlot, the Yarden Katzrin is a deeply colored, full-bodied wine, with a rich and complex flavor. It pairs beautifully with the deep taste of roast meats. The limited edition 2011 Yarden Katzrin was launched at Yarden Vintage Wine Festival 2015, the Winery’s wine and gourmet festival which took place at Golan Heights Winery on May 13-14, 2015. Only the most exceptional vintages bear the Yarden Katzrin label. Despite having the lowest temperatures on record in the region and 130% average annual rainfall, the 2011 harvest produced an outstanding vintage. This was especialy surprising as it followed the 2010 harvest which saw unusually high temperatures. The 2011 Yarden Katzrin is the pinnacle of Golan Heights Winery’s winemaking prowess. A wine of rare and impressive quality, Yarden Katzrin embodies the Winery’s philosophy of ongoing improvement. From individualized handling of the various vineyards, to significant technological investments in growing and production, nothing is overlooked through-

out the entire winemaking process. Under the leadership of Head Winemaker Victor Schoenfeld, Yarden Katzrin epitomizes the Golan Heights Winery’s uncompromising quest for quality and excellence. “A rich wine of exceptional qualities, Yarden Katzrin embodies the best of the Winery’s creative process,” said Anat Levi, CEO of Golan Heights Winery. “As a blend of two varieties, the 2011 Yarden Katzrin tells the story of the Golan growing region as a whole. This wine expresses the unique landscapes and characteristics of the Golan, the stunning power of nature, and the wonderful creativity of our people.” “The 2011 growing season was our coldest ever, and we had to adapt ourselves to the unexpected conditions,” said Victor Schoenfeld. “The combination of the hot 2010 vintage and the cold 2011 vintage taught us an important lesson: the Golan is capable of producing excellent wines even in years of extreme weather, which is highly unusual in the world of wine.” The 2011 Yarden Katzrin is the eighth in a line of Yarden Katzrin wines (1990, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2007) that have received wide-ranging praise in Israel and throughout the world. The 2011 Yarden Katzrin was produced in a special limited edition of 53 barrels only. The wine will be distributed in domestic and foreign markets, and will soon be seen on the wine lists of prestigious restaurants in Israel and abroad.

A wine of rare and impressive quality, Yarden Katzrin embodies the Winery’s philosophy of ongoing improvement.
