At Support Services in Widnes, the team needed no persuasion to dress up for a special occasion! So when one of the team suggested a Pyjama Day to raise money for Children in Need, they jumped at the chance. The team raised over £360 for this very worthy cause… all while wearing their coziest clothes.

Ten Years at Todlaw Tradition tells us that a ten-year anniversary should be marked with a gift of tin. But the team at Todlaw are solid gold!

B

ut what’s the secret to ten great years in the heart of your community? Team effort, great relationships and an unwavering commitment to better lives for the people you support. Regional Manager, Rachel Fourie, tells us about Todlaw’s journey: “At Todlaw, we support 13 people with physical and learning disabilities in Duns, Scottish Borders. The service was established when a local nursing care home was closing down and the people supported there were moving on to new homes. “Understandably, moving from a traditional, nursing-focused care setting into Supported Living was a complicated transition, however there’s always been a team effort here and the

key has been collaboration. “Four 0 of the people we support have been with us since day one, and they’ve achieved things they wouldn’t have dreamt of. From the things we take for granted such as having their own front door key and decorating their homes to their taste, to buying their own cars and taking part in local arts festivals – there have been so many achievements over the years. “As I said though, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. A few years back our regulators identified some serious issues at Todlaw, around how the service was managed and the quality of our documentation, and we had to take immediate action. Of course, we had to work hard to rebuild our trusted relationship with our commissioners and professional partners, but through regular communication

and transparency, we’ve been able to do that. “I think one of the most important things for us has been maintaining strong local connections. Duns is a tight-knit community and one which we’re really proud to be part of. Not only do the people we support access their community as they should, we bring the outside in too. Things like faith groups, local musicians, animal groups – they’re a huge part of the service. “I think it speaks volumes that Berwick Housing Association worked with us to arrange the 10th Anniversary Celebrations, such is the pride we all share in how far Todlaw has come. It was such a joyous occasion and we’re all looking forward to what the next ten years holds. Forget tin – we’re solid gold! Here’s to the next ten years at Todlaw.”

INTRODUCING…

We all want to work in a place that makes us feel valued, like our contribution has not gone unnoticed and that we’ve made an impact. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture – a small moment of recognition for a job well done can make all the difference. And, of course, we know our people are exceptional and deserve the best. That’s why in October, we relaunched our Employee of the Month scheme, Little Acorns.

But… why Little Acorns? We know this is a question that’s been on many people’s lips…why the name ‘Little Acorns’? Well, the name came from our colleagues in the North East who trialled the scheme last year! Their vision was that ‘from Little Acorns, Mighty Oaks grow’ – with more confidence and drive to do great things. As with all our best ideas, this was driven entirely by our regional teams! The concept is really simple. You nominate your colleague (or colleagues!) to your Regional Manager, and these are then passed onto your Regional Director or Head of Service towards the end of each month. Winners will be chosen and announced at the end of each month. Our amazing Little Acorns will then receive a special prize as a token of appreciation, and a winners badge that should be worn with pride!

here is a great deal of preparation that goes into creating a brand new service for people with support needs. And the happiness of the tenants and staff at Temple Court proves that all the work that goes into a positive transition is worth it. Opening its doors in August 2017, the purpose-built complex (which merges two

smaller Community Integrated Care services) is transforming the lives of the eight young people who live there, each of whom have round the clock support to lead their best lives. “We work with around 35 colleagues and our team is still growing”, says Kev. “We work on a one-to-one model with the people we support, and have waking night staff too, so we offer a really high level of support.

“Each member of our team has their own particular strengths and they all give 100% to their role. Everything we do is centred on the people we support and I can honestly say that seeing them happy, makes the team happy too. “The four-building complex is made up of large, light, and spacious communal areas, where people can enjoy a sense of their own space, but can also socialise and mix when they choose to. “Some of the people we support have issues with space and proximity because of their autism, so having the freedom to do their own thing but be together when they want to has made a huge difference. There extensive outdoor areas where there is often a trampolining competition or football game going on. “Seeing the impact on people is truly what motivates us. One of the lads we support really struggled at first – he wanted to stay in his previous service and the move gave him real anxiety. His family and staff team

worked really hard with him in the build up to the transition, but even still, it took five hours to get him to come into the service. There must be something so special about this environment though because the very next day he came out of his new room, gave me a big smile and said ‘Good morning, Kev!’ – it was absolutely incredible. He’s now making new friends and really thriving in his own space. xxx His family can’t believe how great he’s xxxxxx doing following the move, and the staff at his day placement are bowled over too.” Kev concludes: “The individuality of these young people has really come to the fore since the big move – and that’s what makes the hard work so worth it. I’m really excited about what’s to come for Temple Court.”

Showing We Care Every day, Community Integrated Care colleagues amaze those around them with their generosity and kindness towards the people we support and each other. It’s one of the many things that makes this organisation so special.

E

ven more special though, is when our teams come together to support other charities and causes that are close to their hearts. This has inspired our colleagues in Support Services to give something back to our incredible operational teams… after all, charity does begin at home! Introducing… the We Care Fund! The We Care Fund is simple. Support Services colleagues take part in charitable initiatives and events and any money raised goes into a central pot. Services can then apply for a grant of up to £250 to further enhance the lives of the people we support. These will be selected and awarded at our National GameChangers Meeting.

The team kicked off their fundraising efforts with the North2South Bike Ride, a 1,076-mile journey from our furthest north service in Thurso, Scottish Highlands, to our most southerly service in Dorset… on a stationary bike in Old Market Court! Colleagues from all departments took part and raised an amazing amount of £660, which the Executive Team have kindly agreed to match, giving us a grand total of £1,320! That means we have FIVE grants up for grabs in 2018. This can be used for things like sensory areas, day trips, or assistive technology. That’s up to you!

Thurso to Dorset 1,076 Miles Director of Quality Martin McGuigan and Head of Finance Joanne Bunworth both stepped up to add to the miles!

WE’RE STRONGER

TOGETH

Stronger Together – that’s the driving force behind a new series of roadshows, which is enabling our Executive Team and Frontline Leaders to work closer than ever…

T

he brainchild of our new CEO, Mark Adams, the Stronger Together roadshows are a key part of his vision for a more effective and supportive Community Integrated Care. Mark tells us: “The Roadshows are an opportunity for Managers to meet face-to-face with Senior Leaders every quarter to discuss areas of focus, and for us to bring them up to speed on how we’re performing.” “I know for the time being there’ll be an element of ‘we’ve heard this all before’, and our job

as an Executive Team is to be consistent, transparent and truthful. Then in time, our colleagues will see that we say what we mean and mean what we say, and that we’re acting on our promises.” The purpose of the November Roadshows was to introduce the key projects that will form our new Five Year Strategy, which will be launched in March 2018. They set out some bold ambitions for our charity, and got our leaders involved in setting out our vision for the future. Mark says: “I want as many people as possible to have a stake in the future of this

charity. When we reveal our new vision in March, it will be one that has been created and influenced by the people that make this organisation so special.” “Next year marks Community Integrated Care’s 30th anniversary, so it’s fitting that we launch our new strategy in this year of celebration. New projects, investment in our frontline technology, a renewed focus on Quality – in March, we’ll be bringing all of these threads together to present our people with a strategy that we can all get behind. “We know what drives us – the people we support and the amazing people who support them. They’re the focus of everything we’re doing and I can assure everyone that this will come through loud and clear in our plans for the future.”

“I WANT AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO HAVE A STAKE IN THE FUTURE OF THIS CHARITY”

HER

seconds with…

Mark Adams

In September, we welcomed our new CEO, Mark Adams. Returning to the North West after nine years in Dubai, Mark has wasted no time in getting to know all things Community Integrated Care, with a bagful of service visits and a series of Roadshows under his belt already! In this special edition of ‘60 seconds with…’, we catch up with Mark so that everyone else can get to know him too…

Mark - tell us about yourself... Well – I’m 54 years young, married to Julie with six children - Ben, Tom, Matt, Jen, Alex and Evie. I’m originally from the Wirral here in the North West, but have spent my career in Dubai, Kent, Surrey, and Bedfordshire, working in Healthcare. I enjoy watching Everton FC lose week in week out, golf… and the odd game of bowling!

What are your first impressions of Community Integrated Care? We have great people. The work I’ve seen in our services is outstanding. Community Integrated Care is a massive charity with a huge role to play in the social care sector. However, we clearly need to get a lot more joined up as a team and to recognise every day, the amazing work we do. I obviously have lots to learn and many more people to meet, but feel very excited by what we can achieve together.

d What’s next from you an

the Executive Team?

We’re working hard to build a clear strategy for the future, to know where we need to be in five years’ time and how we plan to get there. Having just completed our November Roadshows, we are now planning the launch of our new vision and strategy early next year, which will be tied into our 30th birthday celebrations.

And to end on a light note... tell us an interesting fact about yourself... I’ll give you two! First one is I have a personal connection to the social care sector as my mother, mother-in-law and my wife have all worked in social care in frontline roles. Secondly – I was an advisor to former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on his healthcare reforms in 2005/2006.

TOGETHER Every great Community Integrated Care service has one thing in common: an outstanding staff team.

A

nd what is it that makes these teams so good? Well, it’s a combination of the right values, stronger leadership and of course, the training and expertise to deliver world-class support. That’s why a strong Learning & Development function is essential to an organisation like ours. Our Director of People Services, Jane Macaulay, tells us about her plans for this. “When I joined Community Integrated Care in May, I knew that Learning & Development was one of my main priorities. We’ve always had a great team based here in Support Services, but we needed to improve our offer to teams out in regions. “Of course – the fundamental skills of our frontline colleagues is the most important thing we need to get right. Our mandatory

training compliance currently sits at about 81% - which is an improvement on where we were, but there’s still a way to go. One of our Trustees said to me, ‘If you got on a plane and found out only 81% of the pilots were trained, how would you feel?’ Just like those pilots, we have people’s lives in our hands so we have to be as close to 100% as possible. “This is led by our managers, who themselves need to have the skills and confidence to be the best they can be. We’ve had some great success with our Service Leader and Middle Manager Development Programmes, but want to make sure these continue to be fit for purpose, so we’re reviewing how best

to approach Leadership Development going forward. “Finally, we want working in social care to have the status it deserves as a true career. We want to expand the routes into the sector so that people from all walks of life with the right values see this as the place for them. We’re making the most of our Apprenticeship Levy, and working with our Recruitment Team to find new and creative ways to meet great people. “We want to create the environment for a learning culture where our people are banging on our doors for training and development opportunities and looking to continuously improve. Ultimately, it means better lives for the people we support, which we know is the one thing that unites us all.”
