Staying Safe

Online A

s the world becomes more digitally-focused and our access to online channels improves, it’s more important than ever to stay safe on the internet. It’s all too easy for hackers to get to your personal information, which leaves you at risk. But how do we keep ourselves protected?

Paul Thompson, our Head of IT, has identified some handy tips and tricks that can help us all stay safe online.…

rds 1. Proper passwo Think about how you protect your home. You have bolts on doors, locks on windows and alarms outside. However, if someone has the key to the front door, they’re still able to get in! Think of your password as your key – and just like you keep your keys safe, you must protect your password at all costs! Keep your password safe by… Using different words in your password, for example, ‘BookLampPhone6’. Adding numbers or symbols. Stronger passwords contain numbers and symbols in the body of the password rather than at the start or the beginning, such as ‘#number1#number2’. Using different passwords for different accounts and logins.

2. Is it genuine? Great news! Yo u’ve successful ly protected your keys, but what if an intru der knocks on the door? W ould you let a stranger into your home with out checking w ho it is and if they’re telling th e truth? Of cour se not! When you receive an email, you mus t be sure you trust who it’s fro m and its cont ents. So, how do w e identify an em ail intruder? Check the em ail address. Do you recognise it? Do es it seem legi timate? If not, ignore it or report it. If you have an y suspicions, do n’t click on any links. If an email se ems too good to be true, it probably is!

ONE YEAR ON It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year since we launched our Five-Year Strategy – particularly when you look at what’s been achieved in that time!

O

ur CEO, Mark Adams, reflects on the last year: “When we unveiled We Dare last May, we wanted to create something that everyone felt they could get behind – a true call to arms for our wonderful people. To say you have all taken this and run with it would be a massive understatement. You all DARE! “We know how hard everyone’s working to make our ambitious plans a reality – and I hope you all know how much it’s appreciated. There are exciting things to come for this charity, and while there may be bumps in the road along the way, we’re all in this for the same reason. The Power Of Three. Everything we do is to give back to our communities, colleagues and customers.“If we continue with the courage, dedication and commitment that’s been on display for the last 12 months, the possibilities are endless.”

n February, we traded our Regional Roadshows for one big bumper event, our Spring Roadshow, bringing together all of our leaders for an inspiring, informative and, at times, emotional day. We were proud to welcome renowned motivational speaker, Jeff Grout, who gave a thought-provoking keynote speech on leading through change. As it was Valentine’s week, we swapped speed dating for speed networking, with our leaders receiving short, yet impactful presentations from our partners and projects. From Nourish to Neyber, Maxtime to Marketing, and lots in between, this was an information-packed session! Most of all, it was a day for the new. A Look Bac k One year – countless achievements! Let’s take a look back at what’s been achieved in just 12 short months... The key to any successful strategy is the people who deliver it – and that’s no different here at Community Integrated Care. We know that in order for We Dare to be a success, our people need to be motivated by it, engaged with it, and truly behind it! How do we achieve that? By making our charity a special place where people are proud to work. In the last year, we’ve made great strides…

ith the support of Community Integrated Care, Kevin was determined not to give up the things he loved most. In 2012, Kevin was involved in a serious accident, which left him with a brain injury. After spending over a year in hospital, followed by several years being cared for by his parents, Kevin moved into his own home, in Lybster, Caithness. An avid gym-goer before his accident, Kevin was determined to get back to fitness.

A man on a mission, Kevin set himself the goal of walking again, and to help him achieve this, wanted to set up a home gym. To make this dream a reality, his dedicated team got to work on plans to raise money for Kevin’s equipment. Over the next few months, they took part in fundraising events, including running the Inverness Half Marathon, and opened a thrift shop in their regional office, which has since raised over £1,000.

On the mo ve anything h ! Kevin hasn’t let old him ba ck...

Inspired by the team’s effort, the local community got involved too! Lybster Football Club raised £500 to help Kevin buy more equipment for his gym, and even delivered the cheque to Kevin in person. As a result, Kevin has been able to deck out his home gym with equipment such as an exercise bike and a weight rack.

These donations, coupled with Kevin’s determination, have had a profound impact on his life – he has progressed from being completely dependent, to being able to feed, wash, shave and dress himself. And that’s not all… Kevin has now started walking again!

This is the true power of fundraising.

Determination, creativity and tenacity are all it takes to have an immeasurable impact. For more information and support, or if you’ve got an incredible fundraising idea or project, email fundraising@c-i-c.co.uk

Sylvia’s dream Wedding Thanks to a We Care Fund grant, Sylvia felt like a million dollars on her special day.

W

hen we launched the We Care Fund, never in our wildest imagination did we think we’d be helping a person we support have the wedding of their dreams! Well, dreams became reality for Sylvia Caple, a lady we support in Warrington, when she tied the knot with Paul. We caught up with Support Worker Karen Knibb, who told us how the We Care Fund gave Sylvia the wedding she deserved: “Planning a wedding is every girl’s dream. When Sylvia told us she wanted a big white dress and a gorgeous cake, she knew that these things were really expensive, and told us that she would be happy to hop on the bus and marry Paul at the registry office in a pair of jeans! “I thought that perhaps a We Care Fund grant could help Sylvia. She didn’t believe she’d be successful but was happy to apply anyway. We also posted on social media to see if anyone could help with donations in our local community. Not only was the response absolutely incredible, we were successful in our We Care Fund application! “Sylvia arrived in style – a local gentleman offered to drive Sylvia to her special day in his Mercedes. Her hair was beautifully styled, her nails were elegant, and she carried a bouquet of pink carnations – all donated by the local community. Sylvia was also gifted a stunning gown and used her We Care Fund grant to have it specially tailored, making it the perfect fit!” “She couldn’t believe the generosity of the public and Community Integrated Care, as she started her new married life with Paul. It made her special day even more incredible.”

“The responsely was absolute incredible.”

I can’t wait to get my one year’s service badge! YF: That’s fantastic! How did you get into painting? M: I’ve been painting for a long time, and it’s always made me feel happy. I find that it can be relaxing, particularly if you’re feeling down or anxious. I’d recommend it to anyone who could use a lift.

YF: You must be delighted to see your portraits grace the walls – we were really impressed! M: It has been a dream of mine to have my art on show, so it felt like I had won the lottery.
