Tips on tackling everyday stress

As part of our ambitious We Dare strategy, we’re striving for greatness with the aim of achieving ’Good’ or better ratings from our Regulators – the Care Quality Commission and Care Inspectorate. Congratulations to all our services who received a ‘Good’ or better rating in recent months. This is a great achievement, and paves the way for our journey to become better together:

A special shout-out to EachStep Blackburn, who achieved ‘Outstanding’ from the CQC in September – the first in our Older People’s Services! Find out what makes a ‘Good’ service ‘Outstanding’ on page 14, where EachStep Blackburn’s Service Manager, Phil Benson, tells all!

he EFQM Project is well under way, and we’re really proud to have received our first ‘Committed to Excellence’ Award, which officially begins our Excellence journey. The next thing for us to do is to recruit Internal Assessment Facilitators, who will be responsible for keeping everyone on track. Quality checking shouldn’t be something we do every so often when we’re told to - it really is a continuous cycle of trying to be better every day. Something exciting to look forward to is the return of our Peer Reviewers! Find out more on pages 10-11!

here’s a new system in town – and it’s impressing even the most unlikely audiences! Nourish, our digital care planning system, is currently being trialled in 12 services throughout England and Scotland. We caught up with Project Lead, Samantha Brennan, who tells us all about how Nourish has some unexpected advocates already… “With anything as new and transformative as Nourish, we know we need as many people on board as possible to make it a success. We always understand that some people, perhaps aren’t comfortable using technology, and may need a bit more support. “The team at St Ronan’s Road in Portsmouth are taking part in the pilot. 70-year old Hachina Madzier, Senior Support Worker, had no experience using a smartphone before she was introduced to Nourish, so was a little bit sceptical about how she’d take to the system. “Just four weeks later, she’s teaching her colleagues how to use it! If anyone runs into a problem or has a question, it’s Hachina they call! This is an incredible achievement, given how afraid she was to use the system at first. St Ronan’s Road now has their very own in-house expert!”

O

ur Business Development Project is all about building a team to help us achieve our ambitious growth targets. We’re pleased to say that’s almost complete, and we can now focus our efforts on another key part of the strategy – fundraising! Since the launch of We Dare, we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response in rediscovering our charitable purpose by finding new and creative ways to fundraise. So many of you are already doing incredible things to raise money and improve the lives of the people you support.

Fundraising can be quite complex, as there’s lots of regulation in place for people and organisations that take part – so we want to make sure that you’ve got all the tools to continue your great efforts. That’s why we’re launching our Community Fundraising Pack in early 2019! This will contain all of the information you need to start fundraising for Community Integrated Care, as well as lots of handy guidance to make your event, challenge or campaign the best it can be.

Please keep sending your Fundraising suggestions and ideas to fundraising@c-i-c.co.uk

Memorable It doesn’t matter how long you’ve worked somewhere, we all know what it feels like to start a new job. The nerves on your first day, the excitement of trying something different, and the beginning of a brand new chapter.

B

ut what is it in those first few weeks that make you realise you made the right choice? It’s the gestures and actions from others that make you feel really at home somewhere.

Moments of Truth

Our People Director, Jane Beresford, talks us through the key Moments of Truth of working for Community Integrated Care, and why they’re so important in making our new colleagues feel welcome. “Attracting and retaining caring and committed colleagues is a challenge for a large organisation like ours. We’re all aware of the challenges our sector faces, so to overcome them, we need to recruit exceptional people and make them want to stay with Community Integrated Care for a long time.

8

A warm welcome

“It starts before they’ve even joined us on day one! As leaders, we must use everything at our disposal to make people who join us feel entirely welcome. That’s why we’ve created our Moments of Truth – so that managers and teams know what to do when a new face joins your team. “It starts with the Welcome Postcard. These make our new recruits feel part of a strong and friendly team before they’ve even set foot through the door. Plus, these cards can help to alleviate some of the natural anxiety that comes with being in a new environment. “As the theme tune goes – ‘everybody needs good neighbours’! That’s why our Buddy Scheme is so important. Having someone who works alongside you, who knows your service inside out and can answer any questions you may have, should be a massive comfort to a new colleague. Just having someone to turn to means the world.

These Moments of Truth may seem like small things in isolation, but small things can have the greatest impact if they’re done for the right reasons and truly come from the heart. Jane Beresford, People Director

Dare to Learn landing in 2019! Managers! Are you making the most of our Moments of Truth when someone new joins your team? Visit the Learning & Development area of Click for more information.

Your voice counts

“As detailed in our Culture project, we need to make sure the views of our colleagues are heard and that everyone feels they have a voice. That’s why we’ve created Fresh Eyes Meetings, where new colleagues are invited to meet their local leadership team alongside one of our Executive Team. These happen within about six weeks of a person joining us, so that, right from the off, they know this is a place where they can truly leave their mark. And that’s something we all aspire to

You've heard all about it... and soon you'll be able to see it for yourself! Our brand-new Learning Management System, Dare to Learn, is on its way. With your own personal login, this clever and dynamic system will let you book courses, receive feedback from your manager, do your e-learning and see your training records, all in one place. do in this sector. “These Moments of Truth may seem like small things in isolation, but small things can have the greatest impact if they’re done for the right reasons and truly come from the heart. Our people are our greatest asset, and it’s everyone’s job to make those around them feel nurtured, valued and welcomed. So next time someone new joins your team, think about what you can do to ensure they go home each day feeling exactly that.”

rave reviews For those of you who were part of our charity in 2015, you may remember a formidable group of people who took our organisation by storm. Our Peer Reviewers.

O

ur Peer Reviewers were a team of people we support who were employed by our charity to review the quality of our services as experts by experience. With our big and bold strategy comes bigger and bolder ambitions, and actions to match. That’s why the Peer Reviewers are BACK. They’re not just back though, they’re better! Graeme McConnell, Policy and Practice Manager, tells us more: “Our Peer

Reviewers are absolutely vital to everything we’re setting out to achieve. After all, who knows what good care and support looks like more than someone who receives it themselves? “The role is going to be much broader than what it used to be. Everything from co-producing key policies and procedures to contributing to our induction process and shaping what our EFQM Internal Assessments will look like – it’s all the new role of a Peer Reviewer. “They’re even working on our charity’s first Participation Strategy, which will focus on how

we engage with the people we support, their loved ones, and the communities we work in.” We also caught up with Sushma Majithia, one of our original Peer Reviewers, who couldn’t be more excited about the big plans for the team… “I’m so proud that the Peer Reviewers are back – we’re really passionate about making our mark on Community Integrated Care and are raring to go. This comes from the heart for me – I’m motivated by the idea of making people’s lives better and feel so honoured that I can help in some small way. “I know what it’s like to get great support, but I also know what it’s like to get not so great support too – so by challenging the way things are done, the Peer Reviewers can get people to see things from a different angle – sometimes that’s all it takes to make a huge difference.”

T

oday our spotlight is shining brightly on Amanda Holyoak, newly-appointed Service Leader at Finchley House in Sunderland. Amanda’s career at Community Integrated Care spans almost a decade. She started as a Support Worker at Finchley House, then moved to another local service, West Lodge, where she spent 18 months as a Senior Support Worker. She returned to Finchley House earlier this year as Service Leader. “I was thrilled to return to Finchley House, and started by getting my team together to discuss what had been working and not working at the service. We had a great session which set the tone for how we were going to do things going forward. It’s important to get

Amanda was Alyson’s Support Worker nine years ago, and felt a real connection from the offset. Amanda explains: “We’re the same age, so it has always felt right!” When Amanda came back to Finchley House, she noticed that there were some differences in Alyson’s personality. She tells us: “She wasn’t taking part in her usual activities, she spent a lot of time in bed and she would often be upset and anxious. “I knew this wasn’t Alyson’s usual character, so I asked our Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Physiotherapists to make sure we were being as thorough as possible in terms of Alyson’s wellbeing. As a result, we updated Alyson’s support plan, including changing her diet, so that mealtimes were easier for her.” With a new approach and a proper plan in place, Alyson’s life has changed for the better. Amanda tells us: “She’s much more involved in activities, such as going for walks and visiting the hydrotherapy pool at the local day centre.

That’s something she loved to do before, so we were thrilled when she got back into it as it really alleviates her anxiety. It’s the little things too, that make a huge difference – she has redecorated her room to her taste and bought a new chair which she loves. “One thing that was really important to me was to look at how we were working alongside Alyson’s mum. She hadn’t been to a meeting about her daughter’s support in three

years, so it was amazing to get her input and insight. It means everything to us that she’s now delighted with what she sees.” The changes at Finchley House are the result of Amanda’s fresh new approach, which combines unwavering focus on the people she supports, a positive culture within the staff team and involving community and professional partners... We Dare well and truly in action!

hile there’s no magic wand or secret formula for getting a top rating from our regulator, surely there must be some advice, guidance and insight into what takes services to that next level? We caught up with Service Manager Phil Benson, who shares his top tips for overseeing a great inspection visit, and passes on some lessons that we can all learn from EachStep Blackburn…

Phil’s Top Tips for a great inspection... Prepare, Prepare, Prepare! Do your research – look at other inspections in your area to get a feel for what your inspector is looking out for, good and bad!

Your Annual Improvement Plan is your bible! If you’re following this closely each month, you’ll know you’ve got the basics of a ‘Good’ service covered.

n September, we relaunched our Long Service Awards and, since then, we’ve been delighted to see so many of our colleagues receiving and enjoying their well-deserved awards. Just like Duncan. Duncan, who is supported by Community Integrated Care, lives at Highlands Road in Portsmouth with his friends, Kalvin and Joe. Since 2013, Duncan’s connection to Community Integrated Care has grown as he’s been working in our Southern Regional Office as a part-time cleaner. He tells us more…

Treat your inspector like a partner – be accommodating and friendly, but above all else, be yourself! Try not to be intimidated – inspections exist to make us better, and only report on what they see. Relax and show them how much you love your job.

Don’t just focus on your service. Look at what’s happening organisationally too. We Dare, the Roadshows, Little Acorns, Yammer, the Wellbeing Fund… these are just a few examples of things that inspectors love to hear about.

Try to build a relationship. It’s not always easy, but contacting our regulators outside of inspections helps you understand what they’re asking of you but also gives us the opportunity to share good news with them too.

“I really like my job. It’s lots of fun in the office and it’s great to have the opportunity to earn my own money.” It was the team’s honour to present Duncan with his five-year service award – a £25 voucher, celebratory card and special pin badge that he can wear with pride. “I was very happy when I got my award – I’ve already used my vouchers to buy three new CDs”. Ali Lyons, Interim Regional Director in the South, tells us of her pride in having Duncan on the team: “Not only does he keep our office in order, which is a huge help as we can be a messy bunch, Duncan is a great character to have around. It means the world to us all that we’ve been able to celebrate his contribution to our charity. We’re looking forward to celebrating his ten year anniversary already!”.

t Community Integrated Care, we’re committed to colleagues never feeling alone when it comes to their own personal wellbeing. That’s why we’ve been working on projects to help us break down barriers and openly discuss the things that are all too often left unsaid. As part of our partnership with Widnes Vikings, we’ve been delivering a mental fitness coaching programme to our North West Managers called Offload. Offload delivers training on mindfulness, self-awareness and coping strategies to help people through difficult times. Offload trainers are made up of past and current players in the Rugby League, who draw upon real experiences, hardships and struggles. We asked Russell Treasure, Offload’s Mindfulness Coach, what mindfulness is, and how it can help? Russell explains: “Mindfulness is about paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them. By learning how to take notice of the present moment, we can alter our reaction to everyday stress. “It’s about being aware, and if half the battle is recognising the problem, then we’re well on our way! But, once we’ve learned that we’ve got a lot on our plate, how do we stop ourselves from getting worked up?” The feedback so far has been great. One of our managers told us: “It’s so important that we’re addressing mental health awareness. I can relate to so much of this from personal events and low points in life. We never really know how to help ourselves, so it’s really useful to learn new techniques.”
