Femininity, Fitness and Fun the fine art of belly dance There is a growing group of ladies in Thanet who are wondering why every woman doesn’t take up belly dancing. Deep in the heart of The Delphi Greek Restaurant every Wednesday evening two groups of dancers come together to learn, laugh, make friends and improve their fitness, core strength and wellness - welcome to the world of belly dance! Enthusiastic, humorous and engaging teacher Vanessa has been belly dancing for 16 years and teaching for 5, she holds classes in both Ramsgate and Canterbury. She offers a beginners “no impact” class and also teaches an intermediates and performers class with more challenging moves and choreography. The performance troupe, known as the Best Exotic Ladies, frequently appear at The Delphi Greek party nights, The Belgian Cafe and other venues around East Kent. Anyone can belly dance, you don’t need to be young, have the perfect figure or know anything about oriental dance. We have ladies aged 22 to 68 at classes. You don’t need to show your belly and best of all, there’s no need to worry what shape or size you are. All the ladies stay for a glass of wine or a soft

drink afterwards, (included in the price!), and frequently socialise together at parties, events or simple costume making evenings. The benefits of belly dancing are not just physical, there’s a sense of camaraderie and female friendship and support not found anywhere else. True belly dancing or Raks Sharqi has nothing to do with entertaining men, it’s a sisterhood of laughter, growth and the sheer pleasure found in expressing yourself. The Ramsgate classes started 18 months ago and took over the dance space in The Delphi a year ago. There is real enthusiasm in Ramsgate for belly dance and although the classes are drop in, students rarely miss a class. The ladies will be appearing on a float at Ramsgate carnival this summer and in an international belly dance show case in Broadstairs in October. New students are always welcome, beginners 6pm until 7pm, intermediates 7pm until 8pm, it is £5 per class including a glass of wine or soft drink. St. Laurence Parish Heritage Exhibition

One million visits and counting!

To coincide with Heritage Week, St. Laurence Church and the Friends of Ellington Park have collaborated in organising a local exhibition and living history experience from September 3 to 17 inclusive, in St. Laurence Parish Hall.

In March 2013, www. ramsgatetown.org was launched. It started as a news, events and town council website and has grown into so much more over the years. Many improvements and changes have been made to the website, such as a homepage redesign and an added business directory.

The Heritage Lottery Fund and Ramsgate Town Council are funding this unique event which aims to give residents and visitors alike, an extraordinary insight into the social and architectural heritage of the original parish of St. Laurence. Come and look at the display of original artefacts, photographs and memorabilia which will be curated on a time-line through the ages. Contributors and exhibitors will include: St. Laurence Church, Friends of Ellington Park, the Archaeological Society, members of the Ramsgate Society, the Ramsgate Montefiore Heritage as well as local schools and other community groups. Take part in the afternoon, one-hour guided tours to learn more about the fascinating Parish and Southwood Road area. These will encompass the Church and Churchyard, Ellington Park, local architecture, as well as the War Memorial. Come and listen to some of the fascinating and stimulating evening talks by local historians and wildlife experts: Ralph Hoult’s photographic history, the Town Sergeant on the Ramsgate Town’s insignia, the Bat Society of Kent, and many more. Refreshments and small sales items will be available in the hall. Groups interested in contributing to these events should contact the Friends of Ellington Park before August 7. Your, or your relatives’ oral histories, memories and memorabilia are particularly welcome. Our contact details are: email friendsofellingtonpark@gmail.com by post 62 West Cliff Road, Ramsgate, CT11 9NT by telephone 01843 580990

That month also saw the launch of the Ramsgate Town Facebook (www.facebook. com/RamsgateTown) and Twitter (www. twitter.com/RamsgateTown) pages. Please feel free to like and follow these to keep up-to-date with the latest news, events, announcements, new businesses etc. The year 2014 saw the introduction of many new items for the website such as: competitions, history, interviews and online publications. The website continues to be expanded and developed beyond the original expectation. Last year saw the launch of the Ramsgate Town Youtube Channel (Search ‘Ramsgate Town’) and the Ramsgate Town Instagram account (www.instagram.com/ RamsgateTown). Ramsgate Town Council would like to thank all visitors to the website, all the people who like and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube for the continued support and feedback that we have received. In the space of three years, the Ramsgate Town Website has received over 1,000,000 visits from over 380,000 visitors. We look forward in future to interacting more with businesses to help promote them and to encourage them to advertise on the website, and also look to do even more to promote local events. Thank you for your continued support of the Ramsgate Town website.

New canoe routes launched Exclusive new canoe routes launched in ramsgate Active Ramsgate initiative gives two exclusive routes – one guided, one selfguided through some of the most impressive scenery in Kent. A Ramsgate Town Council regeneration initiative, Active Ramsgate, has launched two canoe trails encouraging canoeists to come to the area and experience Ramsgate from a completely new perspective. The initiative, project managed by Explore Kent, is designed to support economic regeneration by promoting the Ramsgate area through its outdoor activities, and the launch of the canoe trails will take canoeists of all abilities right along the Kent coastline as well as through one of the UK’s most important protected bird sites – Pegwell Bay. The self-guided route is for more experienced canoeists and starts at Marina Esplanade in Ramsgate and follows the coast around to the seaside town of Broadstairs. The guided route takes 2-3 hours, and is a mixture of open sea and river, running

right through Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve. A unique opportunity to spot wetland birds and seals. The guided route is run by Thanet Diving and Watersports and Canoe Wild. They will also hire out equipment to any canoeists visiting with no equipment. The guide is free to download from the Active Ramsgate website – www.ramsgatetown. org/activeramsgate and includes the route directions, details on how to get in touch with the route organisers and also highlights various points of interests along the route. In addition, the canoe route is also supported by the Active Ramsgate ambassador, Olympic Gold Medal winner, skeleton athlete Lizzy Yarnold. Lizzy Yarnold said of the canoe trails: “I love the idea of taking to the water and canoeing your way around the fantastic scenery in Ramsgate. You’ll get to see the wildlife from a completely new perspective and it is great that a scheme which will improve regeneration will also help to encourage people to get active.” Visit www.ramsgatetown.org/activeramsgate, for more information, or search for Ramsgate Town on Facebook and Twitter.

Kent Police My name is John Litchfield and this is my third article for the Ramsgate Community Ad Magazine as the local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) for Central Harbour Ward. It has been a busy time for me, with help from Rebekah Smith, Ramsgate Town Promoter, I organised a Sea Safety Day on May 8 at the Royal Harbour. This was the first event that I have ever organised, I was happy with how it all went. I was lucky enough to have the Ramsgate Carnival Court, Deputy Mayor of Ramsgate Sarah Larkins, Mathew Bennett (Guinness World Record Atlantic Rower) and actress Brenda Blethyn to support us. At the event were the Kent Police Mobile Police station and RNLI Lifeguards, who were on hand with their Jet ski and rescue truck, to give beach safety advice. RNLI Lifeguards have been on patrol on the beaches of Thanet since May 21. Ramsgate RNLI Lifeboat had an open day, where members of the public could have a look around the lifeboats and ask questions to the crew. I would like to thank all the crew for giving up their day. The Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter and Ramsgate Inshore Lifeboat had a practise exercise off the main sands during the morning,

there was the Broadstairs Lifesaving Club with some of their rescue equipment and Ramsgate Sea Cadets. A big thank you to all that attended and to Rebekah and her team for their help. I am already organising next year’s event, so if any organisations are interested in attending then please contact me at Ramsgate Police Shop or via email at 58708@kent.pnn.police.uk. In May, The Friends of Charlotte Court were reinstated. Working parties are already in progress to improve the area. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to keep an eye on their progress, please like their Facebook page. I will be holding more drop-in surgeries at Ramsgate Library over the summer, so look out for dates on various noticeboards around town. Neighbourhood Engagement meetings dates are August 8 at 7pm at The Custom House and November 8 at 7pm at St. Laurence Parish hall. These meetings are open for the public to attend, representatives from the council, police and other authorities are normally in attendance. This is your opportunity as Ramsgate Residents to speak personally to representatives regarding any concerns you may have. Hope to see you there. John Litchfield Kent Police

To find the full list of what activities we have available, you can visit our website at www. agelessthanet.org.uk or call 01843 601550. Lots of people have already benefited from attending one of our activities; here is what they have had to say about them: “I enjoyed the sewing course so much, but even more than that, it gave me the confidence that I didn’t have before.” “The swimming has really helped my arthritis. I have days now where I can get out of bed.” “Vogue-Chi was uplifting, and feels like an essential part of wellbeing and self-awareness! I thoroughly enjoyed exploring areas of myself, personality and spiritual being!” This is a fantastic opportunity to meet likeminded people in your community, make new friends, learn a new skill or discover a new hobby.

As part of Ageless Thanet and Your Leisure’s commitment to 50+ people, we are offering residents of CT9, CT11 and CT12 one month’s FREE membership of the Feel Good Factory Toning Suite, based at Ramsgate Leisure Centre. We are able to offer in depth guidance on areas such as online selling, business accounting and more. This is available for everyone 50+ across Thanet, and is completely free. If you would like to find out more information about the Older Entrepreneurs Programme, call Natalie Glover on 01843 855155 or email admin@tcdt.org.uk. to grow significantly over the coming years. We want local businesses to recognise older people as a vital part of our community and provide services that meet their needs. This could include: A cafe offering discounts for older people, or a local garage running an older people’s discount day once a week. A shop really thinking about its layout and ensuring it is fully accessible to people with mobility issues. A local business offering employment opportunities to older people, appreciating the wealth of skills and experience they can offer. A shop/bar/restaurant that offers somewhere for older people to stop, catch their breath and relax without feeling rushed or pressured. Older people in the UK today really do hold the balance of spending power. If a business recognises this and operates in a way that works for older people then everyone benefits! Town Promoter If half the town (20,000 people) spends just £5 per week in our town centre, this would be over £5 million more being spent in our independent businesses! Ramsgate has over 150 independent businesses, not to mention several of the major chain stores, I reckon that makes us a pretty good working town! Of course, there is always room for improvement and with the community supporting Ramsgate, I am confident that will happen. The more people using the town, the more attractive it becomes for new businesses. Remember, Saturdays are a great day to explore our town and if you use Leopold Street Car Park, it’s free all day! Ramsgate is also the ideal place to get active and I hope you have read our Active Ramsgate article about the new canoe trails, on page 10. The Active Ramsgate group which is funded by RTC is all about promoting what’s on our doorstep and taking advantage of our great outdoors. Along with those options, Ageless Thanet, a new initiative is offering countless FREE activities from vogue-chi to woodwork. Many of our local businesses have signed up to support this project and may be offering special discounts for the over 50s, read more on page 14. Another great way to find out what’s on in Ramsgate is to grab a copy of the 2016-17 Ramsgate Rocks booklet, not only does it include events happening until next Spring, it also has a 12 page insert about exploring our town. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s available from many of our independent cafes and galleries but there are always plenty available from our Visitor Information Centre (run completely by volunteers), just pop in to The Custom House and pick up a free copy, alternatively find it online at www.ramsgatetown.org. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer! Any comments or suggestions, please feel free to get in touch at town.promoter@ramsgatetc.org.uk Rebekah Smith Town Promoter

Project Seas The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded us a Young Roots Grant to work with students from The Royal Harbour Academy and some of the hottest names in the creative industries to produce a large multi-media arts project for the community in Thanet called Project SEAS.

Your trusted and established

MOBILITY SPECIALISTS Making life easier!

Regain your independence

RELAX - you’re in safe hands

Project MotorHouse’s partner on the project is Canterbury Christ Church University which houses the South East Archive of Seaside Photography will act as the stimulus for the students’ own work which will be produced with the help of Ramsgate artist/photographer Rachel Wilberforce and Mark McEvoy. Rachel is a rising star in the art world whose neon and Perspex piece Solaris is in the Arcade Hall at Dreamland. Mark’s work can be viewed at Saatchi Online. The students will also work with engineers from Big Jelly Studios as well as world renowned music producer Adamski to create a sound track to accompany the exhibition and it will all be documented by Dan Whitehead a local video producer. Top graphic design company, Fresh Produce, will help students create a commemorative book of the project. Theresa Smith of Mooch Public Realm Art and Design will get students to source stories from the community and choose images to incorporate into hoardings for building sites which will be manufactured locally by Blaze Neon. The hoardings will then be erected around Cardy’s Royal Sands site on Ramsgate’s seafront. It is hoped the project will expand to other hoarding around the town. Rents from The MotorHouse development will help subsidise the work with young people. By donating money, you will help us bid for the site and become a part of this fantastic community project bringing a major regeneration project to life in Ramsgate. Interview Ralph Hoult An Interview with Ralph Hoult (Mr Ramsgate) - Honorary Freeman of Ramsgate Town What inspired you to help the community? It all started in 1951, when I joined the St. Laurence Scouts as a Cub on Newington Estate, one of the main things that we were taught was to help others. The Scout Movement have always had this as a very important part of their training. Community activity continued when I joined the RAF in 1960, as a lad of 16, and once again the community was very important, during this time I ran the local scouts and a youth club and whenever there was a National crisis they used to call on the troops to help.

words followed by my name, what a great and unexpected surprise it was! I did not even know that this was on the meeting agenda. To say that I was speechless, unusual for me, was an understatement, I cannot find the words for how proud, excited and overwhelmed I felt, what can you say? WOW!

I have always thought that everybody should give some of themselves to the community, most events come from volunteers. These events help raise the quality of all our lives and there is so much fun and satisfaction in seeing your events and projects coming to life and making a difference.

Were you nervous leading up to receiving your award? No, not nervous, very proud and pleased to receive such a great Honour. I do quite a lot of theatre, so I am used to doing similar types of speeches. It was very nice to have the opportunity to acknowledge the many people who have supported me over the years, many of whom were in the audience, Brenda Blethyn OBE, Julie Forsyth, Joan LeMesurier, Janet Fielding, Lady Chesher and Ian Sharp and Victoria Lawrence (our local World Champion Dancers) and of course, not forgetting my family led by my wife Jean and sons.

How did you feel when you heard you were nominated? I was actually in the Ramsgate Town Council Meeting at the time on a completely different issue of funding for our “90th Birthday Street Party for the Queen”, which was successful. When they started talking about the subject I really had no idea where it was going. When Councillor Peter Campbell nominated the first Honorary Freeman of Ramsgate for 58 years, it still did not register. When I heard his

Looking back on your life achievements what is the most memorable?

How does it feel to be called a Freeman of the Town? It is such a great feeling and what an amazing gold badge of the Town Crest. It makes me feel so good every time I get the opportunity to wear it; Blessing of the Sea, War Heroes Drumhead Service, Battles for Victory Event, starting the Alfie Gough Run and some of my own events, it is always an honour.

What can the town expect to see from you in the future? I am already planning the biggest event of my life so far; the “200th Anniversary of the Royal Harbour of Ramsgate”. In the year 2021, we are going to invite the future King George VII and his parents to unveil a statue (hopefully) of King George IV on the Royal Harbour, if all goes to plan. If any reader wants to get involved, I will need a lot of help. I will continue to stage “Make Me A Star”; The “Christmas Cracker Variety Shows” and the “Thanet Obelisk Award Shows”. There is the Ramsgate Event Organisers (REO) and Ramsgate & Broadstairs Sea Cadets and the Ramsgate Visitors Information Centre, there is still a lot to do! Difficult to say; my wedding day – yes; each birthday of my three children – yes; each birthday of my two grandchildren – yes. Outside these there are so many, getting this award was certainly up there, Buckingham Palace Garden Party and lunch with the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury on the Queen’s Golden Jubilee are also in the running. My 13 years in the RAF are high on the list, as this was the day that I received my Queen Scout award and an Air Officer Commandingin-Chief’s award while in the RAF. I have loved my entire life so far.

Ramsgate Vikings Model Boat Club

30 Years at The Boating Pool

Around 35 years ago a group of model boat enthusiasts asked the then proprietor of the Boating Pool if they could use it for their models. This was during visits to the town by the paddle steamers Waverly and Balmoral. It is believed the club was formed around 32 years ago, no-one is exactly sure, but this August poster will be going up around Thanet advertising our 30th Annual Ships Rally on September 4 at the Boating Pool. The annual rally has traditionally been held on the 1st Sunday in September and is attended by other model boat clubs from across the South of England. We believe it to be one of the best and largest shows, usually with approximately 250 models on display, comprising of yachts, speedboats, naval craft, submarines and basically anything that floats including the occasional seagull, hippopotamus and icecream tub. The club meets every Thursday and Sunday throughout the year, 9:30am to 11:00am at the Boating Pool and on the second Thursday each month at The Northwood Club at 7:30pm.

Anyone who wishes to join the club can find contact details on our website, www. ramsgatevikingsmbc.co.uk, or come to the pond any Thursday or Sunday, and have a chat or if the weather is bad you can find us in the cafe on site or ask for an application form from the boat house on the show day. Admission to the show is free of charge, there is ample free parking, cafe, toilets and children’s play area on site. Come along and have a meal or a snack and some refreshment and watch the display by Kent Model Boat Display Team and a couple of volunteers being towed around the pond in a pedalo by a model tug. The local astronomy club will also be present on site as will the RNLI and some Disney characters. There will be the usual raffle for a host of prizes donated by local businesses and club members.

The Micro Museum

Looking Backwards and Forwards The first few months of our 2016 season were busy and fun. First we won the 2015 Pride in Thanet award for best attraction in Thanet then we earned a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2016 – both awards given on the nominations and reviews provided by our visitors. It delights us to know that people who come to the Museum enjoy themselves so much that they want to share the experience with others. Over the last two years almost two-thirds of our visitors have found out about us via the internet and come from all parts of the UK, Europe and indeed many other countries around the world to find us and discover our unique collection for themselves. And, of course, we always recommend that they go on to explore all the other great things that Ramsgate has to offer. We also featured on the BBC Radio 4 programme Broadcasting House as part of a celebration of Britain’s small museums where enthusiasts like us are helping conserve memories of many and varied aspects of the past. This year we started running Themed Games Weekends. The first Star Wars themed event in May included involvement by the local Thanet Cosplay group who, on the Sunday, were seen in costume around Ramsgate and at

the Museum “sharing the Force”. To add more interest to the weekend we created a small display of electronic Star Wars pieces from our collection which will remain on view until the end of the season. In June we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog by loading lots of old Sonic games onto the consoles for visitors to enjoy. Looking forward to the next 3 months: On August 18, we will be running Thanet Thursday a one-day special summertime event with a £1 entry for all visitors who are Thanet residents. We hope this will encourage many more local people to visit and share our pride in Ramsgate’s location for Kent’s only computer museum. On Friday September 2, Saturday September 3 and Sunday September 4 we will have our Bond With Us themed games (long) weekend with many games to play featuring the most famous fictional secret agent On Saturday October 29 and Sunday October 30 we will be holding our Happy Halloween weekend when, as last year, we will have lots of family-friendly fun with our visitors just before we close for the winter. To find out more about Ramsgate’s own Micro Museum take a look at our website www.themicromuseum.org. For lots of chat and interesting and quirky items about the digital world go to our facebook page The Micro Museum. Mike & Carol Deer Owners
