This presentation will provide an overview of the Tri-mentoring Program model at Three Canadian universities (Ryerson, British Columbia and Memorial). Emphasis will be placed on sharing best practices, successes, and challenges as they relate to developing and evaluating mentoring models. The benefits of developing collaborative partnerships within the community, university and college networks, and private corporations will also be discussed. The impact on student career and leadership development through out their academic careers will be illustrated through statistical research and testimonials.

Bio

Presenter: Liza Arnason, Mentoring Programs Coordinator, Ryerson University Liza Arnason is the Mentoring Programs Coordinator at Ryerson University responsible for the development and coordination of the university wide Tri Mentoring Program. She brings with her a strong background in community development, cross cultural/ diversity training, and career counselling. She is currently completing a MA in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). She is also an enthusiastic storyteller with an endless repertoire of both personal and professional testimonials highlighting meaningful and successful mentoring experiences. She has experience developing mentoring initiatives designed to address cultural and linguistic challenges and provide professional development opportunities for industry professionals and students.

We have taken ten of the most prevalent urban myths and fallacies that abound in the field of career development and lay waste to then once and for all. Although we present a great deal of “factual” information we also get the audience involved through interactive “guessing games” and questions and answers.

Bio

Presenter: Ann Clarke and Deborah Noel, Owners – Quo Vadis, Toronto Quo Vadis is Ann Clarke and Deborah Noel. Ann has many years experience is a client-service environment with emphasis on career planning. An engaging presenter, she develops and facilitates workshops on all aspects of the job search process. Ann was awarded the YMCA Peace Medallion in October 2006 for her volunteer work within the Malvern community. Deborah is a dynamic presenter with experience developing and delivering interactive workshops and information sessions using the wisdom and experience gained through a background in human resources, social services and adult education. Their sessions are presented at a variety of venues and organisations across Ontario. Her work can be viewed in print and web medium. Their academic background in adult education enhances both Ann and Deborah’s style and knowledge.

The Advancement Of Career Counsellor Education In Canada

Join us for a discussion of the outcomes of the “Advancement of Career Counsellor Education in Canada” research project. This research was carried out in 2006, and was conceived to begin a process to articulate the educational background that the profession believes is necessary for entry into, or advancement within, the field. The researchers will review: a new model for career development education that was conceived at a think tank of career development educators from colleges and universities across Canada; recommendations for an expanded curriculum that includes the concepts of social justice; and, the professional identity of the field as it relates to education.

Bio

Presenters: Rebecca Burwell, BASc, MEd. Lead Instructor and Sharon Kalbfleisch, BA MSW Career Development Practitioner Program, Conestoga College/ Burwell Career Consulting Rebecca Burwell, BASc, MEd has an extensive background in career consulting that includes work in individual counselling, group facilitation, teaching, and writing within several different sectors, including private practice, community agencies, post-secondary institutions, and private companies. She is a lead instructor in the Career Development Practitioner Program at Conestoga College, and recently wrote the curriculum for two new courses at Conestoga College, titled “Career Development for Adolescents” and “Electronic Tools and Techniques in the Field of Career Development”. She is one of the co-researchers involved in ‘The Advancement of Career Counsellor Education in Canada” research project. Sharon Kalbfleisch, BA MSW has worked as a career counsellor, social worker, educator, and trainer. As a Dean at Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario, she collaborated with a team to establish the post-degree/diploma Career Development Practitioner certificate program. This program became the first online program in career development in Canada. She was also the architect of the joint programs formed between the Conestoga CDP program and the University of Waterloo, the University of Guelph, and Wilfrid Laurier University. She has worked in Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, England, and the United States. She is one of the coresearchers involved in ‘The Advancement of Career Counsellor Education in Canada” research project.
