The Community Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approximately 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1945 by Grant “Mack” Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approximately 3500 residents.
In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974, due to the high costs of the postal service, the Community Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the Downtown Otsego office that it is currently in now. Ron Bennett, Mack’s son, took over ownership in the early 1980s. Then, Ron’s son, Marty Bennett, took over in the early 2000s. In 2023 he became the 3rd generation, sole owner of the Community Shoppers Guide.

Samuel Henry ADAMS AGE 95 - PLAINWELL MI
Samuel Henry Adams passed away on August 8, 2023, while under the care of the Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan, Michigan He was born in Kalamazoo on June 23,1928, and attended Kalamazoo Central High School He was a union bricklayer by profession; & at age 18, he enlisted in the Army After basic training, he was sent to Japan as part of the occupying forces of World War II Upon returning to the United States, he continued to pursue his bricklaying career Surviving is his wife of 74 years, Mary Ann Holman They met in 1949 and lived in Kalamazoo for several years; then moved to Plainwell in 1957, where they were residing at the time of his death He was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Marie; parents Sam Adams and Viola Slesdet; siblings Charlie, Mary, Ruby, Norma, and Violet Surviving are his children: Sam Joseph of Enumclaw, WA and Margie Diamon of Schoolcraft; his 5 grandsons: Phillip, Hazzard, Sean, Luke and Joseph; and 9 greatgrandchildren: Caeleigh, Autumn, Kiley Jo, Brooke, Liam, Gemma, Charlie, Wiley, and Gunnar; and his many nieces and nephews His hobbies were gardening, fishing, hunting, and traveling He was a highly-respected man who was extremely loved and important to his entire family Donations in memory of Sam could be sent to Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan, Michigan The family will be holding a private family graveside service in the near future

REFLECTION: The question ar ises: Is God a God of rejection or a God of mercy and forgiveness? First off God is our creator and is sovereign Being a sovereign God means He is in control at all times God did not tur n away from His most precious possession We tur ned away from Him We know this because we have a deep fear of God and sadness We were made in God’s image and therefore He remains in our consciousness Either we r un and hide from God or we r un to God Adam and Eve chose to r un and hide from God after they disobeyed God’s command The sin they committed was the sin of pr ide They wanted to be like God God did not abandon Adam and Eve but just the opposite From the moment we fell away God began to protect us and redeem us as His people Genesis 3:21 “The Lord God made gar ments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them Genesis 3:22 And the Lord God said “The man has now become like one of us knowing good from evil He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever ” From that moment onward, God had a plan of restor ing His creation to Himself This now comes through His eter nal Son, Jesus Chr ist He died and rose from the dead as the first fr uit of new life No “bor n anew” member of God’s family would willingly tur n away from God’s love As members of the spir itual body of Jesus Chr ist, we have a new nature That nature is to never reject God again Today, people are mar ked by the love of God in them Thank Him this week and praise His name in a church that offers God’s mercy and forgiveness
