As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him So Matthew got up and followed him Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners Matthew 9:9-10

REFLECTION: This stor y happens ear ly in Jesus’ ministr y The idea of inviting a tax collector to be His disciple is radical and outrageous! People think of Jesus as a holy man, a prophet, a man sent by God Surely, He would surround himself with r ighteous people Of all the people to choose from it seems his last choice would be a tax collector Jesus is clear about who he desires to follow Him Luke 18:9-14 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Phar isee and the other a tax collector The Phar isee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get ’ But the tax collector stood at a distance He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner ’ I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted ” I wonder as we enter the month of June do we want to be people who exalt themselves, or people who humble themselves before God? Jesus loves the depressed, the confused, the abused, and the rejected To follow Jesus, we must humble ourselves and confess like the tax collector We are all sinners in the sight of a Holy God We each need to receive God’s love and forgiveness

Glenn Lee Francisco, age 61, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Thursday, June 1st 2023 Glenn was born January 1 1962 in Plainwell, Michigan Glenn was the 4th child of the 5 children of John & Marcia Francisco His siblings include Penny Francisco, Wendy Dunshee Shelley (Kevin) Kling, Rod (Deborah) Francisco all from the Plainwell/Otsego area He had many nieces and nephews and great neices and nephews that he loved spending time with and viewed them as his own kids Glenn loved everyone, and would give you a hug immediately upon meeting you He especially had a close relationship with his 4 siblings and told everyone about them He loved just being with them He often told of his childhood memories working on the farm with his siblings and parents: milking cows on the family run Dairy Farm, feeding pigs, driving the hay wagon, and countless other chores he was entrusted with Three of his favorite things were frequenting the local coffee shops with his Father, listening to music and watching the TV show Dukes of Hazzard He was a good ol boy" like the TV show theme song sang about and would start singing and dancing along to that song whenever he heard it come on the radio He had many good friends in Hastings where he went to school and attended different adult programs, and eventually was employed as a cleaning janitor there He was very proud of his work as a janitor and the paycheck he earned He was loved by SO MANY people and was affectionately known as Glenn Bob s by his family There will be a graveside service held at the Cressey Cemetery 10220 Cressey Road Plainwell, MI on Sunday, June 11th at 2:00 pm There will be a potluck picnic immediately following in honor of Glenn at the Prairieville Township Pine Lake Recreation Park 11481 Doster Rd, Plainwell, MI

Jim passed away Monday, June 5, 2023, at his home in Kalamazoo He was born July 29, 1927 in Kalamazoo, the son of Warner and Alice (Raven)

McGee Jim proudly served his country in the U S Coast Guard and U S Army during World War II He attended Parsons Business School and owned and operated McGee Oil Company in Kalamazoo for 43 years until his retirement in 1992 Jim was a member of the Otsego United Methodist Church In his free time he enjoyed mowing his lawn, researching his ancestry, scrapbooking family photos, camping, traveling and loved baking pies and cookies with his great-grandchildren On October 19, 1951 he married Mildred “Millie” Triemstra who passed away in 2020 Surviving are his daughter, Jane (David) Glas; grandchildren, Lisa (Matt) Nieuwenhuis and Christopher McGee; great-grandchildren, Sydney and Cody Nieuwenhuis; daughter-in-law, Willo McGee, along with many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Richard McGee and siblings, Donald, David and Alice Margaret “Peg” Grice Friends may visit with Jim’s family starting at 12:00 P M , Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Otsego United Methodist Church until the time of funeral service at 2:00 P M , with Pastor Jeremy Africa officiating Military Honors by VFW Post #3030 Burial will take place at 11:00 A M , Monday, June 12, 2023 at Mt Ever-Rest Memorial Park South in Kalamazoo Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to Otsego United Methodist Church

Over the years he raised many chickens, a few ducks and pigs and many crops He enjoyed restoring old tractors and attending farm shows until his retirement in the 1990’s After retiring he began traveling Arlyn also enjoyed cutting firewood, staying busy and teaching his grandchildren how to do things He was a member of the Fly Wheelers and Hope Reformed Church of Kalamazoo On March 27, 1953 at Twin Lakes Church he married Shirley Warner They shared 69 wonderful years together Also surviving are his children, Linda Pipper of Cooper Township, Bruce Ekema of Alamo, Brian (Julie) Ekema of Alamo and Louise (Jack) Fuller of Portage; 7 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter along with many extended family members He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings

Lanae went into the loving arms of Jesus her Savior on April 11, 2023, at the age of 41 She was born December 12, 1981, to Joe and Stephanie Marcoux She attended Otsego Baptist Academy and Otsego Public Schools, graduating in 2000 She was active in Choir and Cheerleading, including Competitive Cheer She married Jason Clinton in November, 2003 As an Army Wife, she lived in several states and went overseas to South Korea for 3 years, ending up in Missouri to raise their family She homeschooled her children She loved the simpler lifestyle Taking her children to parks, museums, concerts, playgrounds, walking along trails, and even the sandy bottom of the Mississippi River as it dried up this year, she provided a great basis for the love of nature her children share with her She is and will be greatly missed She is survived by her parents, stepfather Bob Ruthruff, stepmother Dottie Marcoux, husband Jason, children Brice, Zandria, Gracie, William, Bennet, and Isaac Schurer Brother Paul, half-brother Mitchell, stepsisters Brandy, Billy Jo (Kris), Liz (Ryan), and their families Uncles, Aunts and Cousins She was preceded in death by her grandparents Mass of the Christian Burial was held April 17, 2023 at St Peter Catholic Church in St Charles, MO, Rev John Seper presided Interment of ashes is in the St Peter Cemetery

Mary passed away Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the Wings Home in Allegan She was born March 20 1933 in Trowbridge Township to Charles and Lillian (Pinney) Colder and was raised by her Aunt Laura Mary was the first adult in Otsego to go back to high school and graduate with her diploma She attending school in the same building with her two sons For 30 years Mary worked as a cashier at Harding’s Market until her retirement in 1990’s She enjoyed volunteering at the Otsego Historical Museum and had written “Mary’s Corner” a column for the Otsego Union Mary loved her family very much and when her sons were younger was a Cub Scout den mother On July 22, 1950 in Plainwell she married Harold Kleinbrink who passed away in 1999 Surviving are her children, Mark (Mary Ann) Kleinbrink of Otsego, Dave (Sandy) Kleinbrink of Alamo, Karen (Steve) Marks of Otsego and Janice (Tom) Martin of Otsego; grandchildren, Nicole (Doug), Stephanie (Mike), Laura (Tim), Erica, Garrett (Amber) Melanie Matt (Shannon) Troy (Rhonda) Steve (Ashley) and Jessica (Brad); 27 greatgrandchildren with one due soon and 9 great-greatgrandchildren She was preceded in death by her husband and infant brother, George Leroy Funeral services took place at Winkel Funeral Home on Thursday, June 8, 2023, with Pastor Greg Carlson officiating Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to the Wings Home or Wings of Hope Hospice

India "Fran" Frances GRIMM AGE 94 - PLAINWELL MI

India Francis Grimm “Fran” of Plainwell, MI left her home of 75 years for the last time on Thursday, June 1, 2023 Fran was born on April 9, 1929, to Howard & Pearl Prolo She grew up in the Plainwell area and graduated from Plainwell High School in 1947 While working in the onion fields, she met Lester Grimm They were married on February 4, 1948 Fran was a homemaker She enjoyed sewing and making quilts Fran enjoyed traveling She took trips to Las Vegas with her sisterin-law and was always ready for a trip with anyone that wanted to go Fran was an excellent cook – she was known for her homemade noodles Content with the view from her window, she enjoyed watching the birds, squirrels, and wildlife She also loved jigsaw puzzles More than anything Fran loved her family, especially her grandchildren She never missed an opportunity to spend time with them Fran is preceded in her passing by her parents and her husband of over 50 years, Lester; four brothers and three sisters as well as her grandson Michael Left to cherish her loving memory are her children: Sidney Grimm, Leslie (Walter) Freund, Pat (Keith) Town, Ray (Kathy) Grimm, and Brenda Grimm; 7 grandchildren: Mary Jo, Cathy, Kris, Rob, Allison, and Katie; 5 great grandchildren; 5 great – great grandchildren; two brothers: Dean and Jerry as well as several nieces and nephews And many others because if you came out to the house, you were family In accordance with the family’s wishes a visitation took place at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Homes, 120 South Woodhams Street, Plainwell, MI 49080, on Sunday, June 4, 2023 A funeral service was held on Monday, June 5, at the funeral home Fran was laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Gun Plain Township Memorials made in Fran’s memory may be directed to the Wings of Hope Hospice

This handsome little guy is somehow simultaneously small, muscular, and wrinkly, but he is the cutest thing!

Bar t was brought into Wishbone’s care as a lost dog but no owner has come for him Now he’s looking for a new home! Bar t is pretty independent and ver y lazy With new people, he’s not fearful but he’s not really interested in being all over new people when he meets them for the first time It doesn’t take much to tucker this guy out!

A quick walk is all it takes to have him snoozing in his bed He also enjoys a good back scratch! Bar t could join a home that includes other dogs, children, and potentially cats! He gets along well with other dogs If there is a dog in the family, a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they’re a good match A home with kids age 8 and up would be his best fit During his cat assessment, he showed interest in the cat but he wanted to play and his attention could be redirected

It has been said our greatest personal need is to feel loved We were created by a loving God who created us to receive God’s love and to share God’s love with others Love is the ver y core of God’s being

The saying is tr ue “Love is better caught than taught ” God chose to show us what love looks like by sending His Son, Jesus Chr ist into the wor ld In one of his paintings of Jesus, the great ar tist Rembrandt did an interesting thing Instead of painting a halo over His head, he painted a halo around His hands It seems obvious that He was por traying the way Jesus showed His love by the way He used His hands By His sacred hands, He blessed children, fed the hungr y, healed the sick and raised the dead His nail-scarred hands have long been the sign of His death on the cross for our salvation Following His resurrection, He allowed Thomas to touch His hands As a final act of love He raised His hands and ascended into Heaven

God s love is unconditional, merciful, gracious, kind, self-giving, inclusive, affir ming, healing, redeeming, sacr ificial, and ever-present and so much more! Jesus called love the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-39) and Apostle Paul descr ibed the love of God as “the greatest of these” (I Cor inthians 13:13)

Jesus said the tr ue sign of being a disciple is to love others as He loves us (John 13:34) Things go better when we treat others the way we want to b e t r e a t e d H e r e i s a gr e a t ex a m p l e f r o m Amer ican histor y Many years ago a young lawyer made a tr ip to New Or leans and saw something that broke his hear t a slave auction Slaves had been brought in by boat and were being sold to the highest bidders He vowed that if he were ever in a position to prevent that from happening, he would do what he could

That young man’s name was Abraham Lincoln When the time came he did just that He str uck a blow for justice Imagine the good that would come if we all had that same mindset!

Now, where did he get that kind of attitude? Can it be that he believed in the One who commanded us to treat others as we would want to be treated? Love is not something to be conjured up It flows through us by the Holy Spir it We are only capable of loving others because God first loved us (I John 4:19)
