Dorla A. DUNCAN

AGE 90 - KALAMAZOO, MI Dorla went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Alamo Nursing Home. She was born November 28, 1933 in Kalamazoo, daughter of Willis and Florence Lappin. She graduated from Otsego High School and married her high school sweetheart, Leonard D. Meyers on November 28, 1951. Dorla was employed as a secretary at several different businesses. She enjoyed reading, music, camping, and going to Florida. But, her very favorite thing was cuddling babies. She was a life-time member of the Alamo Community Congregational Church (now called Restoration Church). Leonard passed away in 1986 and she married her second husband, James Duncan, who survives, in March of 1987. Also surviving her are her children: Michael (Marilyn) Meyers, Rex Meyers and Garrett Meyers; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; step-children: Scott (Cathy) Duncan, LuAnn (Scott) Fawley, and Laura (Ron) Osterhouse; four stepgrandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving Dorla are a sister, Donna Heighton, and a brother, Ivan Lappin, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Albert Lappin. Friends may visit with Dorla's family from 10-11am Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Restoration Church (formerly Alamo Community Congregational Church) followed by a Memorial Service at 11am. A luncheon will follow. Contributions may be made to Restoration Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

AGE 70 - PLAINWELL, MI Thomas (Tom) G. Martin, age 70, passed away Friday, December 29th, 2023 after a battle with NASH (a liver disease). The son of John and Anne (Davis) Martin of Kalamazoo, Tom attended Plainwell Schools. Tom was a mechanic and then a mechanic/owner most of his life, with his last business being Tom's Transmission and Auto of Allegan, MI. Tom made a 25 year career out of racing, starting with Martin Dragway in the early 70s, and then Kalamazoo Speedway and neighboring tracks (1976 2001), where he was known as Tommy Martin #30 and then a brief Arco run #03. Tom was an avid golfer after his racing career ended. He would spend 3 to 4 days a week at Cheshire Hills, his home course. He never turned down a tournament regardless of where it was at. He loved his Texas Hold'em Poker, hosting a tournament once a month for 20 years with his nephew John Veld. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant twins and granddaughter Kasidy Martin. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet (King) Martin; son Marc (Jessica) Martin; daughter Tonya Martin; 3 beautiful granddaughters that he loved to the moon and back: Kamden/Kami (Keegan Letts) Martin, Alison (Brendan Burch) Martin, Alayna Martin; siblings: Jim (Diana Kavali) Martin, Mike (Pat) Martin, Nancy (Dave) Veld, and Linda (Charlie) Veldt; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. In the early summer we will have a graveside service. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Barbara FULLER AGE 75 - OTSEGO, MI

Barb passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in Otsego. She was born on April 9, 1948, in Plainwell, the daughter of Loren and Berniece (Boerman) Burchett. As a young woman Barb worked at Kalamazoo Savings and Loan until she started her family. After raising her children, she worked as the hygiene coordinator at Richland Dental until her retirement in 2007. Barb was also a licensed insurance agent and with her husband, owned and operated the Bob Fuller Agency. In her free time Barb loved being outdoors, gardening, hiking, camping, doing crafts, antiquing, and traveling with her friends. She had been a cub scout and den mother for her son Garrett when he was younger. Barb was happiest when surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren. She was active at the First Congregational Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. On November 22, 1968, at Otsego Church of God she married Robert Fuller who survives. Also surviving are her children, Garrett Fuller of Kalamazoo and Dana (Andrew) Switzer of North Carolina; grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan and Audrey; sister, Sandy Morey; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Diane Glessner and Kathy Meert. A special thank you for Connie Rose who was the most amazing caregiver and friend for Barb and the family. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Danny and Stanley. Friends may meet with Barb’s family starting at 12:00 P.M., Sunday, January 7, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Memorial contributions in memory of Barb may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Centrica Care Navigators.

For some time it has been the practice of many to begin the New Year with a word. For example, Merriam-Webster’s word for 2024 is the word “authentic.” It is an appropriate word for the world we are living in today. What is your word for the New Year? During the next four devotionals, I will suggest 4 words to live by in 2024. The first word is the word “JESUS.” Jesus was the Word of God in human flesh (John 1:14). Jesus was the Word of God lived out. That is what Jesus wants us to do. He wants us to hear His words and then put them into practice. To say it in another way, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). Our beliefs determine our words. Our words determine our actions. Therefore, words have power. Among other things, the word Jesus is powerful because He is… our Rock (Matthew 7:24); our Savior (Luke 19:10); our Bread of Life (John 6:35); our Light (John 8:12); our Doorway to Heaven (John 10:7); our Good Shepherd (John 10:11,14); our Resurrection (John 11:25); our Teacher (John 13:13); our Way, Truth and Life (John 14:6); our Peace (John 14:27); our True Vine (John 15:1); our Joy (John 15:11); our Friend (John 15:15); our Lord (Romans 10:9); our Encourager (Romans 15:15); our Wisdom (I Corinthians 1:30); our Lord (I Corinthians 12:3); our Hope (I Timothy 1:1); our Timeless Treasure (Hebrews 13:8) and our Example (I Peter 2:21). REFLECTION: The angel announces an astonishing and incredible description of God’s grace. By meditating on his boundless love given to Mary we see the measurable greatness of God’s works and we lift our hearts and minds towards heaven. MORRISON

He was brought into the shelter as a skinny lost dog on 12/4/23. It is surprising that no owner came to reclaim him. In the shelter’s care, he’s been neutered, brought up to date on vaccinations/prevention, and is slowly gaining weight. This handsome guy isn’t a “Wild Child,” but he does like keeping busy going for walks, following his nose, and doing food puzzles. He is very food-motivated and loves a good treat, which should make training fun and easy! For most of his walks he’s interested in sniffing around, but is also happy to take a break for some love and affection. He’s been very loving and cuddly, even with volunteers who are walking him for the first time! He also shows signs of already being housebroken. Could Morrison be your “Wintertime Love?” He could join a home that includes children and/or potentially other dogs. He has not yet been tested with other dogs at the shelter, but if there is another dog in the home a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they’re a good match!
