Peripheral Neuropathy occurs when nerves in the extremities are damaged or destroyed. Like static on a telephone line, this interrupts the normal communication between the brain and the skin, muscles and other parts of the body. This condition predominantly affects the peripheral limbs (legs, feet, arms, and hands).
Diabetes is one potential cause of peripheral neuropathy, as uncontrolled sugar levels can damage your nerves. Some other causes of neuropathy may include: reduced blood flow, hereditary disorders, inflammation, vitamin deficiencies, and certain medications.
There are many symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, which is essentially damage to the peripheral nerve system. Some neuropathy sufferers describe it as wearing an invisible sock, pins and needles, burning pain, or extreme electric-like sensitivity to touch. Others report the sensation of walking on broken glass or thumbtacks.
Neuropathy May Contribute to Emotional Stress and Depression.
Many people suffering with pain don’t realize that the symptoms could be due to peripheral neuropathy. It is a condition that can be misdiagnosed or ignored until it is unbearable. This can affect all aspects of your life and may even cause emotional stress or depression.
The Solution: Non-Surgical, Lasting Neuropathy Pain Treatment

Rocky is such a sweet, snuggly boy who is so deserving of a better life than what he's known so far. Rocky's two years of life so far have been pretty rough. You know it's bad when the shelter is an improvement! He was brought to Allegan County Animal Shelter as a surrendered pet when his owner was arrested. In his previous home, he was abused. In the shelter’s care, he's been neutered, brought up to date on vaccinations/prevention, and shown lots of love and kindness. On top of everything else he's been through, Rocky came in with a doggie sister he loves very dearly. The decision was made to separate the pair to give them both the best chance of being adopted (and that worked out well for his sweet sister who was adopted quickly!) He was really struggling without his sister, but has recently started doing better without her thanks to the hard work of the shelter staff. Rocky's morning starts with him "getting dressed up" in his best Thundershirt and gets a lickmat every day to help ease his anxiety. He recently made a new puppy pal that he gets to play with! Rocky is looking for a loving person or family and could potentially join a home that includes other dogs and/or children. Rocky would probably prefer to have a doggie sister around his age or younger. If there is another dog in the home, a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they're a good match! Rocky is eligible for Bissell Empty the Shelters so his adoption fee is currently reduced to $50 through December 17. Apply to adopt or foster Rocky online at:

Christian Neighbors Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Education Resource Center
A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on December 4, 2023 to celebrate the opening of the Christian Neighbors Education Resource Center (ERC). On top of celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, Christian Neighbors is excited to begin using their new Education Resource Center. The ERC opens up boundless opportunities for those most in need in the community to learn new skills. Executive Director Terri Shaler shares, “It is our firm belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, unlocking doors to brighter futures and empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential.” This building and fulfilled vision are possible with the gracious support of Bill and Angeline Thompson, Brad and René Saar, and the support of this community.
Within the building is a 12-station computer lab, demonstration kitchen, learning center and private offices. Some of the classes that will be offered are credit repair, budgeting, senior-focused computer courses, energy saving, cooking classes, and poverty simulation, to name a few. Christian Neighbors’ mission is to provide local families in need with food, emergency financial assistance and skill building education to create self sufficiency. Mary P. CARRUTHERS AGE 87 - PARCHMENT, MI
It is with great sadness that Heaven gained another Angel. Mary Pauline (Wyant, Vandervort) Carruthers passed away December 4, 2023. She was born August 17, 1936 in Pennsylvania and on February 14, 1953 she married and started her family with Jim Vandervort. Together they had four children: Ken (Linda) Vandervort, Stan (Mardella) Vandervort, Dorothy (Don Stoughton) Jorgensen, Randy Vandervort, and son-in-law Jerry Jorgensen and step-children John (Bobbye) Carruthers. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, son: Randy Vandervort, and great grandsons: Aiden & Landen Jorgensen. Mary lived a long, full life and she was loved dearly by all her family and friends. On Aug. 28, 1998 she retired from Parker Hannifin and she married Dick Carruthers May 13, 2005. Her favorite things to do were traveling, bowling, golfing, going to church, eating out with family/ friends, going to all her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren’s events and having family get-togethers. Through the years, she traveled all over the world! She got to see most of the United States and also traveled overseas to China and Europe. She was very active in the community and on the board for many bowling/golf leagues and Church Committees, which she truly enjoyed. Mary also volunteered with Hospice. There are so many amazing people that she became close with, and those friendships meant the world to her. Thank you for all the love and support during this time. The visitation will be this Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego, MI. The Memorial will be 11:00-12:00 pm and the luncheon will immediately follow next door at Liquid Note. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Compassus Hospice of Kalamazoo, Michigan, in memory of Mary Carruthers. Arrangements by

David Leroy BRONSON
AGE 70 - COOPER TOWNSHIP, MI David passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, November 27, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He lived an eventful life. He was born in Allegan in 1953 to Ruth and Stewart Bronson. They lived for most of his childhood in California before moving back to Michigan and graduating from Allegan High School. He worked over 20 years at James River in Parchment and then did various jobs following that. He loved to work with his hands and could often be found tinkering in his garage. Most days you could find David enjoying music or singing karaoke with friends. He loved to make others laugh and corny jokes were expected. He loved to watch his grandchildren play sports and was always their biggest fan. David was very close with family and never missed a birthday party or gathering. David is preceded in death by his parents Ruth Foss & Stewart Bronson and his sister Shirley Denney. He is survived by his brothers Ed and Steve Bronson and his sister Deb Anderson. He is also survived by his children: Angela (Rodger) Peebles, Chad (Maggie) Bronson, and Sherria (Kyle) VanSparrentak; his cherished grandchildren: Miranda, Kaylee, Colton, Maddy, Brenden, Brooklyn, and Michael and his one great grandchild, Avery. David lived his last 12 years with special friend Audrey Taylor. David will be missed by many and always remembered for the vibrant and warm man that he was. A celebration of life was held on December 1, 2023, at the Allegan Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Richard M. “Dick” DOWNING AGE 93 - OTSEGO, MI
Dick passed away, Friday, December 1, 2023, at his home in Otsego. He was born October 19, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of William and Josephine (Haulter) Downing. Dick was a police officer and served as the Director of Security for General Motors for 18 years. He was also a narcotics officer and member of the Fraternal Order of Police. In his free time Dick enjoyed fishing and golfing. He attended the First Congregational Church of Otsego for many years and was currently attending Trowbridge Community Church. On May 27, 1983 he married Sharalyn Mahieu who survives. Also surviving are his daughter Linda (Bob) Stuber; step-children, Kim (Craig) Reed and Tim (Jane) VanderPloeg as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date. Contributions in memory of Dick may be made to the Trowbridge Community Church.

Myrtle BROADHURST AGE 94 - OTSEGO, MI
Myrtle Perlin Broadhurst of Otsego, age 94, passed away on December 1, 2023 at Wings Home in Allegan. She was born to Perlin and James Vanarsdal at home in Otsego on Mother's Day, May 12, 1929, the sixth of eleven children. Myrtle went to Hart School where she finished eighth grade then got a job to help the family. The stories she told about walking to school in the snow! She married Carlyle (Herb) Broadhurst who passed in 1983. They had six children: Gary Vanarsdal of White Cloud, Linda Lillion of Hastings, Brenda (Steve) Pride of Otsego, Jim (Carl) and Irene Broadhurst of Plainwell, Dale and Suzanne Broadhurst of Otsego and Jackie Broadhurst of Otsego. Myrtle was employed for many years at Parker Hannifin - Pneumatics until her retirement in 1992. She was an avid reader of murder mystery books and enjoyed puzzles until she lost her vision. Having played golf for many years with dear friends where it was more for laughs, she was very proud of the hole-in-one she made on the 11th hole at Mullenhurst. Myrtle always said she could probably be a better president than the one in office. She disliked one so much that she was always telling people on the phone where he should go. She lightened up after a helicopter kept hovering over her house and she thought the Secret Service was coming to get her because of her phone conversations! A fun-loving lady that loved to joke and laugh with anyone, she especially loved the shopping trips she took with her daughters and daughters-in-law on long weekend trips. Special friends Lorraine and John Millwood held a special place in her heart. Myrtle is preceded in death by a son, Ed Broadhurst (2022), son-in-law Jim Lillion (2018), granddaughterin-law Audrey Pride (2023), sister Martha Zimmerman, Elaine Harter, brothers Marion (Pood) Vanarsdal, Marvin Vanarsdal, sisters Edith Jane Vanarsdal, Betty Laws, Joan Dennis, Mildred (Mickey) Nelson, Lynn Morris and companion Rex Coffendafer. Surviving Myrtle is her sister Barbara Krogmann of Oklahoma whom she loved dearly; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. At her wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no services. Her family will hold a private interment at a later date. The family would encourage those who would like to make a contribution to support "Wings Home" who took such great end of life care for her.

Robert “Bob” Holland, was born on June 18, 1959 in Allegan, MI. He passed unexpectedly and joined his Lord on December 5, 2023. His family is deeply saddened by his sudden death. Bob was only 64 years of age. Bob was an accomplished builder who prided himself on building his family’s home where they built many memories. He was passionate about woodworking and made beautiful creations. He was full to the brim with knowledge gained through life experience and a desire to teach others – he could fix or build anything. Bob spent his free time in nature where he enjoyed long walks, observing animals, hunting, fishing, and foraging. Being a grandfather was one of his greatest joys. His grandchildren were the love and light of his life. He relished in the joy of sharing his knowledge of nature with his children and grandchildren who would frequently receive photos and videos of animals or bugs that he encountered during his outings. In addition, he was a devout Christian who cherished worshipping and serving his Lord. He is survived by his daughters Ashley (Jordan) Dalstra, Amber (Kevin Holcomb) Holland, and his grandchildren Noah Dalstra, Jedidiah Holcomb and Jolene Holcomb. Bob leaves behind his mother Judith Mann, brothers Richard (Melissa) Holland, Bryan (Tracy Singles) Holland, and David (Janene) Lober, his sister Alicia Lober and step-sister Kathy Messimore, and their children. Bob is preceded in death by his father, Richard Holland and step-brother Richard Mann, Jr. Bob will be remembered for his love for his family and nature. Services will be held at Westside Church of Christ 1400 N. 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI, on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11:00am. The story is told of a man who was brought before a judge for some alleged wrong doing. The judge asked him if he had an attorney. The man said he could not afford one. The judge responded, “That is no problem, I will appoint a real good lawyer to represent you.” The man replied, “I appreciate that, but what I need is not a good lawyer, but some real good witnesses!” The point: God wants us to be real good witnesses. A witness is one who has heard or seen something (I John 1:1-3). The shepherds of old may well have been the very first humans to testify of what they had heard and seen. Let’s see how this plays out in the Christmas story and in our lives. WE LISTEN TO GOD They heard the glorious angelic announcement (Luke 2:11). While He lived on earth, Jesus told stories (parables). His stories often ended with the words, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Are we listening to God? WE CAN ONLY SHARE WHAT WE OURSELVES HAVE EXPERIENCED. They were determined to see for themselves what they had heard (Luke 2:15). Before he was converted to Jesus Christ, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, said, “I went to America to convert the Indians, but, oh who shall convert me? WE SHARE WITH OTHERS WHAT WE HAVE HEARD AND SEEN. Their witness was spontaneous, intentional and God-inspired (Luke 2:17). There are many ways of sharing God’s love. A few examples include: By our Christ-like attitude. By the words we speak. By the way we treat others. By using our talents for the glory of God. By our service for Christ. It is true that actions speak louder than words. This reminds me of the story of a little boy who saw his pastor at a football game. As the pastor walked by, the little boy said to his dad, “There goes the sermon!” Do people see Christ living in us? OUR EXPERIENCE WITH CHRIST CHANGES US. They went back to work (Luke 2:20), but they were not the same persons. The Scripture says they returned “glorifying and praising God.” Do we glorify God in our work? In short, the shepherds gave their testimony. What will we give Him?
Prayer: “Dear Lord, help us to celebrate Your birth by the testimony of our lives. In Your strong name” Amen.
I DARE YOU TO BE LOVED BY GOD When people listen, God speaks. When people obey, God acts. When God acts, people are changed. Turn us again to yourself, O God. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. Psalm 80:3 This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes. I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 REFLECTION: Every Christmas we see attempts by society to crush the gospel with a heavy weight of darkness. Be of good cheer! It is impossible for the light of Christ not to shine, because it shines in us. St. Paul is not trying to flatter the Corinthians (his holy people) but is reminding them that they are under the weight of the Holy Spirit. So, let’s hold fast to the true gospel, even when there are others trying to pollute it. Acts 18:9-10 And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” Our voices of truth are powerful among the people in this world. A multitude of ungodly people will always attempt to corrupt the reason for Christmas. Nevertheless, each Christian represents the image of Christ in many ways. This Advent season, let us be free from every wrinkle and stain caused by sin. Everyone who is in Christ is a beacon to the pagan world. We are sanctified in Christ. PRAYER TIME: Heavenly Father, I have been way too shy about sharing with others the meaning of your Son’s birth. Bless me this holy season as I remind people of the true message of Christmas.
