ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! ...would walk 500 miles to be the man who comes back home with you!

Don’t be fooled by this sweet guy’s white face, Miles is estimated to be 4 and a half years old. Miles was brought into Wishbone’s care as a lost dog on 11/12/23 but unfortunately, no owner has come for him. Since then, he’s been neutered and brought up to date on vaccinations and prevention. Miles is gentle, fun, and smart. He just wants to be your friend and get some treats! This boy is OBSESSED with treats and squeaky toys. Squeak a squeaker and you’ll have Miles’ full attention. He likes going for walks and playing in the animal shelter outdoor runs, but really just wants to chill and cuddle on a couch with his person. He’s initially a stoic gentleman, but let him get to know you and he’ll be your snuggle buddy. He also has the cutest “freckles” on his back! Miles is a bit of a prince who would probably be happiest as the only fur baby in the house, but could join a home with human children. A home with respectful kids 10 and up would be best and he could do younger with the right kids. Miles may be able to join a home with another dog after doing a meet and greet to ensure they’re a good fit. He seems to ignore doggie etiquette during introductions and wants to show right away that he’s the “top dog,” which most other dogs don’t appreciate.. Will you go the extra mile for Miles? Our beloved and adventurous Pauline (Polly) died at the age of 94 on Friday, December 22, 2023, at her home on the Ismond Tree farm that she and her husband Morrison, created as a legacy in honor of God. She was born September 9, 1929, in coastal Mississippi, the daughter of Paul and Eva (Diehl) Kennedy and her much cherished stepfather Jerry Welch. Polly attended undergrad at University of Georgia, then Cornell University and finally the University of Michigan, doing post graduate studies in the new field of Nutrition and Dietetics. She was employed at Pipp Hospital in Plainwell, MI for over 40 years as a dietitian. Polly met her husband Morrison “Mory” Ismond at the University of Michigan, and they enjoyed 35 years together. They both lived out their faith in practical and direct ways, and raised a family that nurtured the land they loved as well as nurtured the neighbors and friends around them. Anyone who met Polly knew her true love was to share the story and living reality of Jesus with others. She was passionate about teaching the Bible in many different ways. She and her husband, Morrison, led many Bible studies through the years, including church, neighborhood, and ones at the Allegan County jail in the late 70’s. Following her husband's death, she continued that ministry on her own for the next 35 years. Polly also led a vibrant and long-standing Ladies Bible study group for over 50 years, spending countless hours preparing lessons, praying for all of those involved, teaching Sunday classes in various churches, and writing lessons in one of her hundreds of spiral notebooks. Polly loved adventure, and was an accomplished canoeist, an avid open water swimmer, an expert Alpine and Nordic skier taking dozens of ski trips around Michigan, Montana, and Colorado…and even continued her Nordic skiing despite loss of her eyesight over the last 20 years, skiing by feel and by touch. As Polly’s sight became a challenge, she determined to live fully alive in the Lord regardless. She took several trips around the world (China, Haiti, Egypt, Israel, etc.) She attended many photography classes, weekend seminars, and summer camps in her pursuit of displaying the beauty of God’s creation. She took many Elderhostel trips to enjoy such adventures as camping, white water rafting, as well as kayaking. Every year, she and her daughter, Deborah, would plan a vacation to seek out new adventures and new memories throughout North America. Polly was a woman not to be deterred by her loss of sight nor her age. Polly’s love of the land was seen as she planted, trimmed, mowed, harvested and managed the family tree farm even into her 90s. She honored all that she learned from her husband in both wildlife and land management. Many families and friends still come every year to pick out their special Christmas tree, enjoy bird watching walks, fish for trout and hunt for deer…or as she called it; “managing the herd”. As a threetime cancer survivor and then becoming totally blind during the early 2000s, she remained independent and determined to stay on her farm and continued to live out God's calling in her life. With the care and help from her incredible neighbors and dear friends of many years it was possible for her to do so. She was blessed with five grandchildren Nathaniel (Kelsey) Ismond, Jonathan (Samantha) Ismond, Sarah Ismond, Mathea Kennedy Ismond and Morrison Ismond. Great grandchildren came within the past two years, Tatum (Nathaniel and Kelsey) and Eloise (Jon and Samantha). Polly and her children would also consider her long-time dear friend and spiritual sister, Libby Dendel, as part of the Ismond family. According to her wishes, Polly will be cremated with a memorial service to celebrate her life on January 20, 2024, 11AM, at Trowbridge Community Church, 355 26th Street, Otsego with a luncheon to follow. William Lewis Switzer, beloved husband, father, and respected teacher, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2023, at his home in Plainwell, MI. Born on November 10, 1935, in Cedar Springs, MI, he was the youngest of five children born to Sherman and DeLove Switzer. He lived a life full of love, dedication, and a genuine passion for education. William, known to his loved ones as Bill, will forever be remembered for his compassionate and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and students. With his warm smile and gentle demeanor, Bill touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his career as a high school teacher. Bill's education journey began in a one room schoolhouse. He would walk about a half mile each day. He loved to tell the story of walking by prisoners of war on his way to school. They would toss apples to him from the orchard where they were working. In high school, Bill was active in Future Farmers of America, he played football, sang in the choir and was a class officer. Bill graduated from Rockford High School in the class of 1954. He went on to attend Grand Rapids junior college and then Western Michigan University where he earned a BA in 1960 and his MA in 1963. He held degrees in English. After earning his master’s degree, he dedicated over four decades to shaping the minds of young learners, instilling in them a love for knowledge and a thirst for growth. His students often referred to him as their favorite mentor, praising his patience, understanding, and ability to ignite a love for learning within them. In addition to his remarkable teaching career, Bill proudly served his country. Enlisting in the Army on August 17, 1954. Bill was sent to Fort Devens where he learned Morse Code. He also spent 14 months in Alaska’s Wildwood Station. Bill displayed courage and commitment, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. Preceding Bill in death are his parents, his sisters: Yvonne Alles (and her husband Ray and daughter Judy), Gerry Parmalee and Freda Switzer; his brother Donald; in-laws Arthur and Lorena Coveyou as well as his sister in-law Sally Watson and beloved brother in-law Alfred Watson and their two children Tom Watson and John Watson; his nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Outside of work and his military duties, Bill cherished his time spent with his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Patsy Coveyou, who stood by his side through thick and thin. His children, Kurt Switzer (Chiara) and Ellen Glueck (Charles), were the pride and joy of his life. Bill's loving grandsons, Christopher, Aaron and Daniel, also survive him, and cherish the precious memories they shared together. He loved being outdoors and working on his land and in his garden. He was involved with the MEA as well as Bowbenders and the Thornapple Dulcimer Club. Bill retired in 1994 and enjoyed his retirement years, hunting, gardening, camping and learning to play the hammered dulcimer. His favorite saying was “if you’re early, you are on time. If you are on time, you’re late.“ Remembered fondly as a man of compassion, optimism, and kindness, Bill Switzer will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter, his love for storytelling, and his genuine interest in the well-being of others. Friends and family are invited to join together to celebrate the remarkable life of William Lewis. A memorial service will be held at the Plainwell First Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 29, starting at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow, providing an opportunity for all those gathered to share their cherished memories of Bill. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Centrica Care Navigators or the First Presbyterian Church of Plainwell. Although our hearts ache with the loss of our dear Bill, let us find solace in the knowledge that he will forever remain in our fondest memories and his legacy will forever be etched in our hearts. Nick passed away, Thursday, December 21, 2023, from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was born January 3, 2000, in Roseburg, Oregon, the son of Kia Letts and Jody Stamp. Nick was currently working at KL Mott Enterprises. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing his guitar and singing songs. He had a great sense of humor and always had a good joke or tall tale to share. He loved making others laugh and smile. Nick liked adding to his tattoo collection and going to hippie fest. Most of all he loved spending time with his family. Surviving are his parents, Kia (Jeff Steen) Letts and Jody Stamp both of Plainwell; siblings, Mickey, Jody and Jacob (Jasmine); step-sister, Autumn; many nieces and nephews and grandparents, John and Betty Letts, Henriette Letts and Marilyn Stamp. Marilyn R. Buist of Kalamazoo, MI, age 88 passed away December 23, 2023, at Bronson Methodist Hospital after a long battle with COPD. Marilyn was born on October 10, 1935, in Plainwell, MI, the daughter of Leroy and Helen (McGeath) Davis. Marilyn graduated from Otsego High School and Western Michigan College. On April 21, 1957, she married Phillip Buist of Kalamazoo who preceded her in death in 2022 after 65 years of marriage. Marilyn is survived by daughter Karen (Don) Dombrowski, son Timothy Buist, grandsons Tanner (Amaira) and Carter (Hannah) Buist, brother Jack (Patricia) Davis, brother-in-law Lee (Shelley) Buist, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Marilyn lived her strong faith in God and was a longtime member of Portage United Church of Christ. She loved keeping in touch with family, collecting antiques, and traveling - particularly to Ireland. She was an avid sports fan, especially of Western Michigan Bronco basketball and football. A celebration of life, followed by private family committal service at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego will be held on a later date. Memorial gifts are suggested to be directed to Heritage Community Foundation Legacy Fund. Helen passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born March 23, 1940, in Portland, the daughter of Leonard and Hazel (VanHouten) Brown. Helen worked at Kal-Equip and then at Parker Hannifin for many years until her retirement. Helen was an excellent cook and baker and was well known for her amazing apple pies and homemade pizzas. She loved gardening, especially growing zinnias and taking care of her little dogs Sadie and Bella. On February 4, 1961, in Allegan she married the love of her life, Roland Wallace who passed away in 2010. Surviving are her children, Brett (Debbie) Wallace and Veronica (Mikell) Eckler; 3 grandchildren, Matthew, Evette and Kyler; 3 great-grandchildren, Navene, Brady and Helena and sister, Neva Wallace. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Dale Wallace and dog, Sadie. Friends met with Helen’s family Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A funeral service was held Thursday, December 28, 2023, with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Interment followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. AGE 64 - KALAMAZOO, MI Duane passed away, Friday, December 22, 2023, at his home in Kalamazoo. He was born March 7, 1959, in Ypsilanti, the son of Daniel and Florence (Shepherd) Smith. Duane proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked at Hayworth, Perrigo and several other area businesses as a forklift operator. He was a member of the Dorr American Legion and enjoyed discussing world events. Duane wasn’t afraid to voice his opinion on politics or any other subject. He liked taking the back roads, hunting, trips to the casino, traveling up north to Irons and attending the truck and car show in St. Ignace. Duane was a loyal Green Bay Packers and U of M fan. He loved spending time with his family and his dogs. On July 10, 2021 he married Becky Brenner who survives. Also surviving are his step-sons, Brandon Herp of Oshtemo, Chad Brenner of Otsego and Jason (Jennifer) Brenner of Otsego; grandchildren, Christopher, Donavan and Makayla; 6 siblings and their spouses, Glenn, Daniel, Ronda, Wade, Kim and Mark Smith along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Kathleen Herp-Smith. Friends may visit with Duane’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 29, 2023, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Scott Douglas HOLTMAN AGE 60 - PLAINWELL, MI

Scott Douglas Holtman, of Plainwell passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at the age of 60. He was surrounded by his wife and daughter by his side. Scott was born on September 14, 1963, in Kalamazoo. He was the son of John, Jr and Darla (Cowling) Holtman. Scott owned Holtman Concrete with his father from 1985 until 2009. Scott was a hardworking man. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to work with his hands. He enjoyed working with wood, and making furniture. And most of all making wood toy trains and cars. For his grandson Kaden, he made his favorite rocking horse. Scott loved to hunt and ﬁsh and just be outdoors. Scott was a big family man. He loved spending time with family and friends. His proudest moment was when he became a father to his only child, a beautiful daughter Danielle. She was always his sunshine. Scott will always be remembered and loved by his wife of 34 years, Trish (Townley) Holtman; his daughter: Danielle (Jacob) Wolthuis; and grandchild: Kaden; and his sibling: Patty (Tom) Reid. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother: Steve. Scott’s wishes were to be cremated and there will be a celebration of his life on January 13th, 2024. Christmas Project 2023 Plainwell Volunteer

Celebrating 50 Years of Community Service! The 50th annual Plainwell Volunteer Christmas Project was successful in helping over 185 families. Our community pulled together to help brighten the holiday season for over 750 people living the Plainwell area. Individuals, groups, and businesses privately sponsored over 30 families! The remaining families received items donated by the community and packed by volunteers at the Plainwell High School on December 15th. More volunteers helped recipients load food, gifts, cleaning and personal hygiene items the following morning.

Every story has a villain. King Herod is the villain in the Christmas story. He was insanely jealous, fearful and insecure. His evil mind caused him to make a tragic decree. The wise men had naively asked him, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-2). Herod, pretending to search for the Christ child, then decreed that all male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or younger must be killed; hoping the Christ child would be among them. The angel, having warned Joseph in a dream of what was about to happen, caused him to rouse his sleeping family and flee down to Egypt. It was about a nine or ten day journey. TAKE AWAYS • We can trust God to guide us. While most of us will never experience being awakened by an angel, there are a number of ways the Holy Spirit guides us including the following: prayer, reading the Bible, the circumstances of life, Christian conscience, inner impressions of the Holy Spirit and Christian counseling. None of these are possible without first listening to God and then following the leading of God’s Spirit. Question: What did persons like Abraham, Moses, Apostles Paul and Peter have in common? They listen to God and obeyed Him. In the words of a hymn writer, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey” (John H. Sammis, 1887). • God is our Refuge. In ancient times, whenever things became intolerable for the Jews, through persecution, peril or tyranny; they could find a safe haven in Egypt. At one time, every major city in Egypt had a colony for Jews. On a higher level, the psalmist proclaimed, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). We can claim that verse any time we need it. • When things look dark, hope lights the way forward.
