Our mission is to provide local families in need with Food, Emergency Financial Assistance and Skill Building Education to create self-sufficiency.
November 13-21 is National Homelessness Awareness Week
So far this year we have helped 81 homeless households locally. 37 of these families were living in uninhabitable places like cars, tents, sheds and storage units.
WHAT WE ARE DOING: • Providing food, hygiene items and other supplies like safe heaters, plasticware, manual can openers and socks • Helping with gathering documents and filling out housing applications
Marjorie’s Story
Marjorie had to suddenly move out of her small home of 15 years because it was being sold by the landlord. She lives on a low fixed income and we are trying all possible ways to find her housing—the waiting lists are long. She found an abandoned house with no running water or electricity to squat in, sleeping on the floor. She visits us weekly to get food, shower cards, hygiene supplies and moral support to just keep going. Winter is coming. Marjorie is 78 years old...

Age-based guidelines for buying toys and gifts
The holiday season involves making holiday gift lists and checking them twice, or even more frequently to ensure that gift-givers find the best fit for recipients. While age may only be a number in certain instances, when it comes to gifting, age should be a consideration — particularly when kids are involved.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that an estimated 86,000 children treated for toy-related injuries each year are younger than five. Toy-related injuries are preventable, and prevention often comes down to choosing ageappropriate toys for kids.
Toys can be choking hazards when small toys or those with small pieces are given to children who are too young to use them safely. Kids are curious and often put items in their mouths. Choking is the fourth-leading cause of unintentional death in children under age five, indicates The Emergency Center. Falls, eye injuries, drowning, and motor accidents are leading causes of gift-related injuries.
Here’s how to select age-appropriate gifts.
• Read the packaging carefully. Most toys and other children’s products will with an age range come recommendation. While some kids may be mature beyond their years, it’s best to choose gifts that fall within the recommended range. This is particularly the case for infants, toddlers and any child under the age of five.
• Avoid fad gifts. Children often want the latest and greatest gadgets and toys for gifts even if they are not the smartest choices for their ages. Resist the urge to buy something just to be the “cool parent or grandparent,” especially if it isn’t age-appropriate. Mermaid tails became popular in recent years, and likely will see increased presence thanks to the home-viewing release of a popular live-action mermaid movie. However, they limit movement and can make swimming more difficult, potentially increasing risk of drowning.
harvest
& home
• Provide safety gear. As children age, they may be more interested in gifts that appeal to hobbies and abilities. Scooters, bicycles, skates, and other items are popular among older children. These gifts should only be purchased for those with proven ability, and even then, accompanied with the appropriate safety gear. This can include helmets, knee pads and eye protection.
• Consider waiting before gifting certain electronics. Although children may be able to use devices safely, there are many who advocate for waiting to give young children smartphones and tablets due to the consequences of excessive screen time. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says children ages two to five should limit non-educational screen time to about one hour per weekday and three hours on weekend days. Children should be encouraged to pursue healthy habits that limit use of screens, so gift-givers can look for gifts that help to this end.
Age-appropriate gifts ensure safety for the youngest people on holiday gift lists.

• Host a winter block party. Many cities and towns across North America participate in WinterFest events, which run the gamut from food and craft festivals to sporting events. Individuals can take cues from these type of activities and plan neighborhood festivals right on their streets. Neighbors can wheel out their fire pits or utilize outdoor propane heaters to keep spots cozy. Hot cocoa and cider stations and warm treats can keep everyone from feeling too cold. Electric slow cookers can keep everything from soups to chilis to stews warm and participants can enjoy a buffet of hearty foods.
• Go sledding on the best hills. Sledding is a popular wintertime activity that doesn’t require too much equipment. Sleds can be purchased at sporting goods stores or toy stores. Sledders of all ages should consider

wearing helmets to protect against injury if they will be traversing especially steep hills.
• Build a snow creation. Use the first significant snowfall of the season to organize a snowman, snowwoman, or snow-animal-making event or contest. Waterproof gloves are a necessary piece of equipment, as are buckets for moving snow, shovels, carving and shaping tools (which can be plastic cutlery), and accessories to dress up the final product.

Fun ways to enjoy the start of winter
Winter begins on December 21, 2023, and ends on March 19, 2024. Many people lament the arrival of winter, perhaps thinking the colder temperatures and shorter hours of sunlight will compromise their chances to have fun. Even though particularly chilly thermostat readings or stormy conditions can hamper some plans, when people dig deeper they may find that even the coldest days present opportunities for enjoyment.

• Visit an ice rink. Whether a rink is indoors or outside, ice skating is a quintessential wintertime activity. Skaters of all skill levels can take to the ice and enjoy some exercise and laughs. Check local rink schedules to take advantage of open skate times when hockey games or practices are not dominating the ice.
• Mark the winter solstice. The winter solstice, also known as the start of astronomical winter, is the shortest day of sunlight on the calendar. It occurs when either of the Earth’s poles reaches maximum tilt away from the sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, this occurs on December 21, 2023.

Because there will be only roughly seven hours of daylight, take steps to make the fact that the sun will set at its earliest a little easier to swallow. Kids can run around outdoors with glow sticks, while adults can deck their homes in twinkle lights if they are not decorated for Christmas. Lanterns, campfires and candles can be lit, and everyone can gather outdoors to chat and socialize.
Winter begins on December 21, 2023, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate this fun, if sometimes frigid, season.

I DARE YOU TO BE LOVED BY GOD When people listen, God speaks. When people obey, God acts. When God acts, people are changed. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things. Psalm 107:8-9 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father – the one in heaven. Matthew 23:8-9 REFLECTION: The very idea of having a Father in heaven is amazing. Not only do we have an earthly father in the flesh, but also a heavenly Father in the spirit. Our heavenly Father invites us to live just above the physical experience by ascending upward with blessed thoughts and wonders. Just before my own father’s death I remember meditating on living life without him, and I felt alone and fearful. I was concerned about the ability to make wise decisions. I had a transcendent moment and heard the still small voice of Jesus saying, “I am your real Father, and you can depend on me.” The fear left me and was replaced with tears of joy. Jesus has never let me down and never will. When we humble ourselves before God, we turn over our lives. As we turn over our lives we begin to be used by God for His glory. There is no better way to live than having God as our intimate Father guiding us, our families, and our future. Life has not always been a bed of roses, but it is far more beneficial than I could have ever imagined. Hebrews 12:5 “And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his son? He said, ‘My son, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. God alone is the Father of all.’” Let’s all be reminded that each of our relationships depend on God alone through Christ. Let’s give continual honor to our Father in heaven. PRAYER TIME: Heavenly Father, I give thanks to you, the Lord of all relationships. Your steadfast love is assuring, and I am learning to depend on you. Praise you Father for quenching my thirst to be loved by you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. Need a Bible? Stop by our Little Library, located in front of our building. “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the spring of life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com _____________________________________
In our first appointment there was a member of our church who was the town physician. He often stayed up all night helping people who were sick, but he never missed Sunday worship. He always wore a black suit and bow tie. His white hair looked disheveled, his clothes were wrinkled, his physical appearance a bit untidy and he was often so tired he would sleep during the sermon! Someone asked me if it bothered me when people would sleep during my sermons. My answer was always the same, “At least I know they trust me.” There was one thing about him no one questioned. He had a heart of gold. He was a God-send to that community and everyone respected him. In I Samuel 16:7 we read, “… Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” The point: It’s what’s inside that counts! Jesus, our Great Physician, has always been interested in the health of our souls. This is because our hearts determine our thoughts and our thoughts determine our actions. For example, in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus traced murder to anger (5:21, 22), adultery to lust (5:27, 28) and our giving to our inner motives (6:24). Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander” (Matthew 15:19). Moreover, Jesus called out the Pharisees saying, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees… for you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead man’s bones” (Matthew 23:27). He added, “Woe to you… for you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and selfindulgence” (Matthew 23:25). These are hard words! Jesus did not say, “Blessed are the proud of heart” or “Blessed are the pompous of heart” or “Blessed are the pious of heart.” He said, “Blessed are the PURE in heart” (Matthew 5:8).
ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! There’s a new
DEPUTY in town...
This rootin’ tootin’ cowboy is Deputy. He was brought into Wishbone’s care as a lost dog and has been neutered and brought up to date on vaccinations. It is estimated that he’s just over 1 year old. Deputy is such a sweet, playful pup. He loves meeting all of the volunteers and going for walks with them, but also is perfectly happy laying outside for some belly rubs in the sun. He’s easy to fall in love with, so it’s easy to see why he’s quickly becoming a volunteer favorite! Deputy could join a home that includes other dogs and/or children. He gets along with most dogs and would love to have a playmate, so if there is another dog in the home a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they’re a good fit! He would do well with kids 8 years and up. Apply to adopt or foster darling Deputy online at:

Our world would be a better place if everyone allowed Jesus Christ to live and reign in our hearts. The old adage is true: The way to change the world is to change hearts. Only God can do that. Prayer: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). In Your strong name Amen.

Russell L. CULVER
AGE 91 - OTSEGO, MI After 91 years, Mr. Russell Culver’s journey on Earth moved to the next level, with his passing at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell, on Friday, November 10, 2023. He was comforted, amazed and frequently amused by the memories of his life. Growing up on the Shelbyville farm established a strong work ethic (as well as a Grand Champion steer); years in the US Air Force, Strategic Air Command, cemented a feeling of proud patriotism (as a photogrammetrist, analyzing aerial photography to produce specialized maps, an interest in photography began to develop); meeting and marrying South Dakota native Sharon McGuire (in 1954) opened the door for a family of his own, with the births of Cindy and Sandra; employment as a heavy equipment operator/mechanic in South Dakota provided opportunities to enjoy the feeling of a job well done-as well as time to study in depth one of his passions—photography! The purchase of Davis Studios in Otsego and Wayland in 1966 was the perfect opportunity. Settling back in Michigan not only allowed him to be near family and friends, but he could also concentrate on an occupation for which he was passionate and well trained. Countless people in the local area have portraits, senior pictures, or wedding photos in their possession, all examples of his skill and knowledge, and attention to detail in producing just the right image. Special appreciation is extended to the entire staff at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell, his residence since 2021. There he received loving care and was truly made to feel as if he were one of the family. The amazing team from Centrica Care Navigators (formally Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan) must be recognized for their constant expertise and compassionate care. The entire team was an amazing support group. To Alissa, as his primary care nurse, not enough can be said as to how important you were to him – and all of us – in those final weeks. Thank you to all for your part in ensuring his final days were filled with contentment and peace. As per his request cremation has taken place and no memorial service will be held. It is hoped you will remember Russell Culver as a man who enjoyed life, had a special place in his heart for adventure, and was a good, honest, Christian man. His journey now continues with those who have preceded him in death, his wife Sharon and his parents, Gordon and Helen. Daughters Cindy and Sandra, sister, Ruth Barrows, and extended family members and close friends thank you for your prayers and kind thoughts. Be joyful knowing that now for Russell the lake is always smooth, the fish are always biting, and the light is just right to get that perfect photographic shot. Arrangements by

"All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us." (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
Raymond A. WINKEL AGE 101 - OTSEGO, MI
Ray passed away Thursday, November 9, 2023 at his home with his family and caregivers by his side, and went to be with his Lord and Savior. He lived all of his 37,131 days (101 years) to the fullest. Ray was born on March 13, 1922 in Harbor Beach, MI, the son of Herman and Elsie (Laeder) Winkel. He graduated from Pigeon High School in 1939. At age 19 he met Bernadine Nicholl at a dance and they married 5 years (to the day) after that on March 30, 1946. He attended Cleary College and graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mortuary Science. Ray served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 during World War II, mostly in the South Pacific. Ray and Bernie moved to Otsego in 1956, where they owned Winkel Funeral Home and compassionately served the community until their retirement in 1984. Ray was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where he held many offices and helped build both of their churches and parsonages. He was a member of the Otsego Chamber of Commerce, Otsego Lions Club and VFW Post 3030. For 10 years, Ray served on the Otsego Public Schools Board of Education. As a young man, he played football, basketball and softball and as an adult, he coached Little League. Ray spent many hours on the dance floor with Bernie, square dancing and dancing polkas at family weddings. He loved spending time at Pine Lake and organizing WinkelFest, a gathering of his family for over 39 years. He enjoyed deer hunting at his favorite place, the Winkaway Lodge, as well as fishing, traveling and bowling. Ray played tennis with local seniors until he was 90 years old. He encouraged his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to play all sorts of sports and attended their events whenever he could. An avid fan of Otsego Boys’ and Girls’ basketball, Ray attended many games, until his health kept him away after age 100. He enjoyed playing many types of card games including cribbage all his life, most recently with his dear friends at The Fountains, where Ray and Bernie had lived since 2012. Ray’s compassion, wisdom, quick wit, deep love and devotion to his family and friends will be profoundly missed. Surviving are his children, Carol (Don) Wuebbling of Ohio, Judy (Tim) Conroy of Connecticut, Jim (Jo Ann) Winkel of Pine Lake, Tom (Carol) Winkel of Grand Rapids; 9 grandchildren, Matt (Leighton) Wuebbling, Monica (Hayle) Chun, Kelwin (Paul) Newman, Kaitlin (Michael) Ervin, Erin (Eric) Nordstrom, Adam (Abby) Winkel, Eric (Jen) Winkel, Andy (Erin) Winkel and Stephanie Ryan; 21 great grandchildren, who lovingly called him Grandpa Ray; many nieces and nephews; his dear friend and companion Ann Wedel. For the past 11 years, Sandy Rimpson, along with her team including Crystal, Lindsey, Quilla, Joe, Roy, Naomi, Tobi, Marina, Shamisha, David and Michelle have lovingly cared for all of Ray and Bernie’s needs, for which their family is eternally grateful. Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife and partner of 74 years, Bernie in 2020; his brother Keith and sister Barbara Schmidt; in-laws, Bob and Gin Nicholl, Max and Doris Nicholl, Fran Winkel, Joe Schmidt; nieces Karen Hansen, Julie Lovelace and Jean Winkel. Friends met with his family Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A funeral service was held at 11:00 am, Monday, November 13, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego, Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Ray may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego or Christian Neighbors of Plainwell. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Centrica Hospice for their compassionate care during his final weeks.

After completing trade school, he worked at Parker Hannifin Brass, where he met his soon-to-be wife. Bob married his best friend Lorie Lester on November 24, 1994, in beautiful Gatlinburg, TN. Together for 29 years, they had two daughters, Stacy (Dan) Gearhart of Three Rivers and Kara (Daniel) Ratcliffe of Grand Rapids, and three sons, Jake (Jessica) Helmboldt of Martin, Tyler (Zoe) Lester of Gobles, Luke (Angela) Helmboldt of Plainwell, and twelve grandchildren. Bob loved his wife, kids, grandkids, faithful dog pal Yoda and 3 kitties, and spent as much time with them as he could, creating cherished memories with his family and friends. Springtime mushroom hunting trips, summers spent camping at Miller Lake Campground were some of the highlights. Though he struggled in his final years with severe back pain, Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman, occasional golfer, and he wanted to share these passions with everyone he loved as often as he could. As he had trusted his life and eternity in the hands of Jesus Christ, he is now sharing these passions with his Savior today in Heaven. Those blessed enough to know Bob know that he was loyal, easygoing, he had a big, compassionate heart, and a classic "dad" sense of humor, and he made the best venison jerky anyone had ever tasted! In addition, he was a big Michigan fan, loved the Detroit Tigers, and had an unwavering loyalty to the Lions, cheering them on through every victory and defeat. In recent years, Bob had been struggling with his health, but it had taken more of a downturn in his last few months. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain and is at peace. Bob is survived by his wife Lorie, their children and grandchildren, his father Don, his father and mother-in-law Bernard and Louise Lester, his sisters, Jenny (Mark) Anderson, Krys (Rick) Dutkiewicz, sister-in-law Julie (Bob) Taylor, brother-in-law Rod Lester; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends, such as his long time, dear friend Joe Baldwin. Bob is preceded in death by his mother, Loretta Helmboldt, and brother Mitch Helmboldt. Cremation has taken place, and the family invites all who knew and loved Bob to join them for a celebration of life later in the spring of 2024 (specific details on time/place, etc, are TBD). This gathering will be a time to share stories, celebrate his life, and support one another through this difficult period of loss. Bob Helmboldt will forever be remembered for his warm heart, dedication to family, and his passion for the things he loved. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him, and he will be greatly missed.
