Decorated American Olympic gymnast, Simone Bile, has something to say about the importance of balance in life. She is quoted as saying, “A loss of balance is really a loss of focus. When you’re doing something that requires lots of balance, you have to concentrate.” When we think of balance we think of time management. According to data from the Pew Research Center, most Americans split their days into “work, rest, and fun.” In the Christian life, Jesus is our model of a balanced life. Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). Rick Warren uses the analogy of a wheel. In the center of the wheel is a hub. The spokes represent our relationships, our work, our career and our goals. When Christ is at the center, a balanced life is the result.

Leaving this sweet girl was the kindest thing her previous owners could have done for her, as she was in terrible condition and needed medical attention for her skin. She is looking so gorgeous as her fur grows back in. On top of being resilient, Sakari is so sweet and gentle. She loves going for strolls, soaking up the sun, and getting all of the pets and treats she so deserves. This angel is petite for a husky, weighing 50 lbs. At this time, Sakari may be happiest as the only pet in the home. She could potentially join a home with other calm dogs, but she requires a slow introduction and doesn’t like other dogs touching her (likely because her skin is still healing!). AGE 81 - GOBLES, MI Valory passed away, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in Gobles. She was born July 13, 1942 in Otsego the daughter of Charles and Roberta Fox. On July 2, 1960 she married Orville Jackson Jr. who preceded her in death. Also preceding are her son, John Jackson; daughter Linda; brothers, Larry, Albert, Roger, Richard, David and Marvin Fox; sisters, Judy Palmer and Betty Latta; brothers in law, Kenneth, Robert, Duane and Jim Jackson and sister in law, Denise Jackson. Surviving are her children, Terri (Bob) Pillars and Ron (Danielle) Jackson; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; sisters, Gloria (Mike) Rutherford and Victoria Seekman along with many nieces and nephews. On January 21, 1978 she married Wayne Havens who passed away in 1991. He had 3 children, Scott (Kathy) Havens, Christy Havens and Karen Gray. Valory was a life member of the Otsego VFW where she enjoyed playing pool and the Otsego Moose Lodge. She liked playing in pool tournaments and bowling. She worked at several area businesses and retired from Sandra’s Bar and Grill. She was known for her breakfasts and could fill the place up. She was a great mom and grandmother. She loved doing so many things and staying active. She loved having lunch and playing Keno. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Friends may visit with Valory’s family starting at 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 30, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 P.M., with celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Valory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Jerry passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023 in Kalamazoo. Jerry was born October 13, 1943 in Plainwell the son of Leon and Velma (Breck) Howrigon. Jerry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. For 16 years he owned and operated Modern Cleaners and also worked for Beaver Research Chemical until his retirement. In his free time Jerry liked watching TV and satisfying his sweet tooth with a bowl of ice cream. He was an avid Tigers, Lions and Red Wings fan and enjoyed golfing in his younger years. Jerry was an active member of St. Margaret Catholic Church for the last 16 years, the Knights of Columbus and the Otsego Elks Lodge. On June 26, 1965 at St. Margaret Catholic Church he married Dinah Thompson who survives. Also surviving are his children, Rebecca (Dan) Pearson of Plainwell, Brian (Rebecca) Howrigon of Plainwell and Jon ‘Pat’ (Angela) Howrigon of Otsego; 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; a brother Robert Howrigon and several nieces and nephews. AGE 88 - COOPER, MI

Dolores went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, October 23, 2023 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born August 19, 1935 the daughter of Stanley and Thelma (Miller) Neal. On September 5, 1956 she married Donald Cook who preceded her in 2019. Dolores retired from Bronson Hospital where she had worked as a nurse for 14 years. In her free time she enjoyed reading, baking and quilting. Dolores was very proud of her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Surviving are her children, Dennis (LuAnn) Cook of Galesburg, David (Lorie) Cook of Otsego and Darcy (Ken) Hall of Coldwater; grandchildren, Sarah (Jeff), Drew, Brittney (Armando) Mares, Gabriel (Becky) Hall, Savanah (Dalton) Porter, Michael Hall and William Cook; 11 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Stanley ‘Buck’ Neal; sister, Eileen (Marshall) Graham and a niece Delora Graham. A funeral service was held at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego on Thursday, October 26, 2023 with Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann officiating. Burial followed at East Cooper Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Dolores may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego.

Leroy Charles "Dooley" Johnson ll, age 63, passed away October 22, 2023 in his home in Martin, MI. He was born December 11, 1959 in Terre Haute, IN to Janice and Leroy Johnson. Leroy later moved to Otsego, MI, where he attended Otsego High School. He worked at Marshall Plastic, where he met his soon-to-be wife. Leroy married his best friend, Susanna Shook, on June 17, 1978. Together for 45 years, they raised two daughters, Lacey (Troy) Simpson of Plainwell and Frankie (Kevin) McConnaughey of Martin and have six grandchildren: Logen Demink, Landen, Gunner, Tucker, Gideon Sims, and Teagen Simpson. Leroy loved the title of Papa and was always doing something with his grandkids. From toodling around on the golf cart to showing off the motorcycle, Leroy always had his dog or grandkid by his side. Those lucky enough to know Leroy say that once you met him, you instantly became his friend. He was so selﬂess, dropping what he was doing to come and help. In recent years, Leroy had been struggling with his health, but it had taken a downturn in recent months. His family was so hopeful he would see relief, but the pain grew to be too much for Leroy. His family takes comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain and is at peace. Leroy is survived by his wife Sue, their children and grandchildren, his sisters: Robin (Steve) Folk, Dawn Raulston, Sherry (Dave) Meyer, Becky (Mike) Staley, Rena (Kenny) Burk, and Lorrie Johnson; brother, Bobby Johnson; brother-in-law, John Raulston; sister-in-law, Gloria (Alice) Shook; brothers-in-law, Tom (Meg) Shook, Max Shook, and John (Lori) Shook; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, Janice and Leroy, and step-father, Richard Dooley; brother, Richie Dooley; sister, Barbie Hamilton; sister-in-law, Peggy Shook; father-in-law, Frank Shook, mother-in-law, Georgia Shook; and his dog Cookie. Bernie passed away, Sunday, October 22, 2023 at his home in Otsego. He was born May 9, 1925 in Manistee, the son of William and Agnes (Ozgka) Glocheski. Bernie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. For 38 years he was a manager at Harding’s until his retirement in 1984. In his free time Bernie could be found working in his rose garden or watching the Detroit Tigers and Lions. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church and the Rose Society of Kalamazoo. In 1989 he married Joyce Sebring who survives. Also surviving are his children, Helen Reinhart, Susan Margoshes, Michael (Linda) Glocheski, Patrick (Nana) Glocheski, Nancy (Rick) Barker and Steven (Tracy) Glocheski; 3 grandchildren; brother, Patrick Glocheski; many nieces and nephews along with his canine companion, Speedy. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Phyllis. According to his wishes cremation has taken place.

REFLECTION: If you read Matthew, Mark, or Luke, on this engagement you will see they all agree that the scribes and the Pharisees frequently tested Jesus to entrap him. Jesus, however, sees an opportunity to teach a key point of the gospel. God’s love is greater than what they can possibly imagine. With a gentle mind he declares to the Pharisee that he was not far from the kingdom of God. Most people seek to know God, and ask the question: Is there a God? If there is how do I live a good life? Jesus addresses this when he quotes this verse from Deuteronomy 6:5 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Jesus preached a message of submitting to God by repenting of our sin. These men of the Law defend their position. Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This is the only way to live a righteous life. PRAYER TIME: Heavenly Father, thank you for blessing me with your wisdom so I do not desire to walk in step with the wicked, or keep the company of mockers.
