NO JOB TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL! • SITE WORK • DRIVEWAYS • YARD LEVELING • LAND CLEARING • DEMOLITION • NEW BASEMENTS • DRAINFIELD REPAIRS • SEPTIC SYSTEMS ...and more!

Once referred to as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a time to recognize all the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during wartime and peacetime. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are over 21.8 million veterans in the United States, many of whom served in wars, like the Korean Conflict, and the Persian Gulf War. On November 11th, pay tribute to our veterans and thank them for the sacrifice they have made to preserve our freedom and protect our country.

Happy Birthday to sweet

CHIP!

He just turned five years old, and you’ll never guess what’s at the top of his birthday wishlist… to get adopted, of course! He would also happily accept belly rubs, some yummy treats, and a new hard, nylon toy to chew on. Chip has been awaiting adoption for 194 days. He was brought to the animal shelter as a lost dog in very rough condition, covered in scars and wounds, missing fur, and with irritated, red skin. Look how handsome he is now! This sweet boy could join a home that includes other dogs. If there is another dog in the family, a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they’re a good match. Chip is deaf and knows some basic commands with hand signals. Because he is deaf, it would be best for his home to be without cats and young children. Apply to adopt or foster sweet Chip online at:

Wood Floor Cleaning Guide

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 21, 2023 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home I 2023

Wood floors are coveted for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their aesthetic appeal. Many people prefer wood flooring because dust and dirt do not become trapped as they would in carpet fibers, seemingly making wood flooring easy to clean.

Most floors endure a lot of wear and tear. However, with care, wood flooring may last for decades. Part of that care includes understanding how to properly clean and maintain wood floors so they look their best. The following are some steps for keeping wood floors as pristine as possible. • Remove shoes. It’s a good idea to remove shoes, particularly heels, when walking on wood floors. Sharp heels, cleats and other shoes can scratch or dent wood flooring. All shoes can track in excess dirt, which can contribute to a lack of luster as well.

but generally is a veneer or a photographic image of wood covered by a thick layer of melamine resin over fiberboard.

• Skip harsh cleansers. Regardless of flooring type, most are covered by a sealant that can become streaky or dull if the wrong cleanser is used. Avoid chlorine bleach, ammonia, pine oil, or undiluted vinegar. Instead, choose a cleanser that is specifically recommended for the flooring type. Do not allow water or solutions to sit on the floor, as that can contribute to staining and warping. With laminate flooring, avoid wet mopping unless the flooring is specifically marked as being able to be wet. The underlayers of laminate flooring can warp if it gets wet. • Damp is better than wet. When cleaning wood flooring, use a damp rather than a soaking wet mop. Better Homes & Gardens says standing water can damage wood surfaces.

• Sweep or vacuum frequently. The experts at The Spruce suggest sweeping, vacuuming or dust mopping wood floors daily. Dirt and dust make floors more slippery, and dirt or sand particles can lead to scratches on the floor.

• Use the hard floor setting. When vacuuming, adjust the vacuum to a hard flooring setting, which will not engage the brush rollers on the vacuum head. Rollers can scratch wood and laminate flooring, advises The Home Depot.

• Learn your flooring type. Wood flooring is broken down into three main categories: solid hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood flooring and laminate wood flooring. Traditional hardwood is made of planks or strips of any hardwood covered in a wood stain. Engineered flooring is manufactured by gluing together several thin plies of hardwood. Laminate flooring looks like wood

• Use repair products as needed. Scratch and repair kits can fill in small scratches. Wood floor polish and wood waxes also can revitalize worn floors. Again, check that the product is safe for your particular flooring before use. Wood floors bring warmth to a home and are very popular. Cleaning them correctly can add to their appeal and longevity.

How to make outdoor living spaces more comfortable COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 21, 2023 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home I 2023

Increase privacy No matter how friendly homeowners are with their neighbors, there comes a time when privacy is paramount. Fencing, whether it is wood or vinyl, or even a natural fence made from closely planted hedges, can ensure residents feel comfortable venturing outdoors to swim, take a cat nap or even star gaze in private.

Private backyards are now go-to spaces for recreation and entertainment and great places to recharge the body and mind. One ripple effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was more time spent outdoors, even if it was predominantly on one’s own property. OnePoll, in conjunction with the lawn care company TruGreen, surveyed 2,000 American homeowners and found participants spent 14 hours outside every week in 2021, which was three hours more than prior to the pandemic. In addition, respondents admitted that time spent outdoors was therapeutic. A separate survey conducted for the International Casual Furnishings Association found that people now spend more time relaxing, gardening, exercising, dining, and entertaining outside than in

years past. Though COVID-19 may no longer dominate headlines, the desire to enjoy outdoor spaces has not waned. While enjoying outdoor living areas, homeowners can do all they can to make these spaces comfortable and welcoming. The following are some good starting points.

Get all lit up Outdoor spaces can be enjoyed no matter the hour when there is ample lighting. That could be why the International Casual Furnishings Association reports those who plan to renovate their outdoor spaces list outdoor lighting as a priority. Outdoor lighting not only sheds light on entertaining spaces, but also makes spaces safer and more secure.

FOR ALL YOUR FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS! NAPA Oil Filter Sale October 30 thru November 4, 2023

Address the elements Homeowners should note the direction their backyard faces and the typical daily conditions of the space. For example, a yard that faces southwest may get plenty of strong sun during the day, requiring the addition of shade trees, covered patios or arbors to cut down on the glare and heat. If the yard is often hit by winds, trees or bushes planted strategically as windbreaks can help.

Bite back at bugs Homeowners may want to consider using a professional exterminator to get rid of ticks, mosquitoes and other nuisance insects from outdoor spaces. As people spend more time enjoying their properties, they can consider the many ways to make outdoor living spaces more comfortable.

Sit comfortably High-quality comfortable seating increases the liklihood that homeowners will want to stay awhile in their outdoor spaces. A deep seating set complete with plush chairs, outdoor sofa or love seat and chaise lounge chairs gives people more opportunity to sit and stay awhile.

Take a dip A pool can be the perfect gathering spot on a warm day, while a spa/hot tub can bridge the gap to cooler weather. According to the Family Handyman, soaking in hot tubs can relax tired muscles after a long day, loosen up stiff joints, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep.

Safe and effective ways to clean up leaves

Fall Home I 2023

Removing leaves from the yard is a task that homeowners must perform each fall. Thousands upon thousands of leaves can drop from a single tree. Multiply that by the number of trees on a property, and it’s no surprise the task of leaf cleanup can seem so daunting. Furthermore, not all leaves are shed at the same time, so several cleanup sessions may be necessary before the last leaf is banished from the yard.

Just like removing snow, leaf cleanup can be a taxing job if done by hand. For people unaccustomed to exercise, cleaning up leaves can turn into quite a workout. According to the Discovery Health Calorie Counter, raking leaves for one hour can burn nearly 292 calories. Shoulders and arms will feel the burn. Raking leaves is considered moderate physical activity, similar to brisk walking. Those who find themselves straining or out of breath should take a break, and these tips also make the job safer and easier. • Wear layers when cleaning up leaves. It may be cool at first, but it’s easy to work up a sweat after raking for awhile. Layers can be peeled off so as not to get overheated or risk hypothermia from sweating in chilly temps.

slightly toward the end of the handle with one hand three-quarters of the way down the handle from the other. Do not twist the spine; move your entire body. Avoid overuse of muscles on one side of the body by switching sides periodically. • Do not try to rake or blow leaves on windy days. Wind will only make the task that much more difficult, which could lead to overworking oneself.

• Avoid overfilling bags. For those who plan to mulch and bag leaves, remember that compressed leaves can get heavy pretty quickly. Do not over-fill bags, as they can be hard to move or bring to a recycling center. Using a leaf blower to push leaves into piles will reduce the strenuousness of the task, but leaf blowers can be heavy and noisy and gas-powered blowers can produce a considerable amount of exhaust. Raking leaves can be quite a chore. It is important that homeowners take steps to prevent injury while cleaning up leaves in their yards.

• Pay attention to your posture while raking. James Weinstein, chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Dartmouth Medical School, recommends forming a wide base with the feet and holding the rake

Parents can work together to make Halloween safer Halloween is often just what the doctor ordered. Nestled between the start of a new school year and the arrival of the holiday season, Halloween is an opportunity for children and adults alike to have some fun as they dress up in costumes and indulge in some sweet treats.

Even though Halloween is designed to be an entertaining day, it’s not without its risks. The Child Safety Network says on average, two times as many child pedestrians die on Halloween compared to other days. Costume safety and food allergies are some additional hazards to contend with on Halloween. Parents can work together to help reduce the safety risks associated with Halloween. Light it up Lack of visibility and dim lighting at night increase the risk of pedestrians being struck

by cars on Halloween. Improving visibility can go a long way toward cutting down on accidents and related deaths. Homeowners can keep the lights turned on and perhaps illuminate neighborhoods even more by temporarily installing strands of Christmas or bistro style lights. Children can carry batterypowered flashlights, lanterns or even glow sticks to make them more visible. Reflective tape placed on candy bags or somewhere on costumes also can help.

Set up safe trick-or-treat zones The popularity of trunk-or-treat events that emerged several years ago took some of the risk out of Halloween by containing trick-ortreating to a parking lot at a school or church. Neighbors can establish something similar close to home by petitioning the town for permits to close a specific road or roads to vehicular traffic for a “block party” of sorts. Residents in the area can trick-or-treat and

party in the street without risk of injury from cars. Ask participating neighbors to chip in for refreshments and entertainment, if desired.

Check candy Generation Xers may recall their parents warned against eating candy from Halloween before it could be inspected for hazards. Unfounded claims of dangerous items being lodged into candy perpetuated the suspicion of all Halloween confections for some time.

There is a risk of eating candy without thought, but that risk is now primarily related to food allergies. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that, each year in the U.S., allergic reactions to food results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 150 deaths. Common allergens include peanuts

and other nuts as well as eggs and dairy. Others may be intolerant to ingredients like gluten or soy. Inspecting candy nutrition information can help weed out candy that may cause a reaction for those with food allergies or other concerns.

Prepare homes Adults and parents can take additional steps to prepare their homes for Halloween. Keep the porch and front yard clear of tripping hazards, such as garden hoses, decorations and toys. Sweep away leaves and branches to prevent tripping or slipping. Restrain pets so they do not jump on trick-or-treaters. Offer a variety of treats for kids of all ages so trickor-treaters get age-appropriate items. Halloween fun and safety can go hand-inhand this October.

How to prepare a fireplace for the winter COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 21, 2023 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home I 2023

As hours of daylight shorten and fall gives way to winter, thoughts shift from fall foliage to spending time cuddling under warm blankets and being cozy indoors. A fireplace can improve the ambiance of any room and help to create a warm and welcoming gathering spot.

Home fireplaces typically are wood-burning or gas. Though maintenance for these fireplaces differs, certain preparatory steps must be taken to prepare a fireplace for winter. Clear the clutter Items can accumulate in areas that are not in use, and a fireplace is no exception. Take a few hours to remove any belongings from in front of the fireplace and clean the mantle thoroughly.

Have the chimney cleaned Hire a professional chimney cleaning company to inspect the chimney and clean it thoroughly before winter. According to BobVila.com, a chimney should be cleaned once a year, or after about every 80 fires. The National Fire Protection Association says failure to properly clean chimneys is one of the leading contributors to home fires. That’s due to creosote, a highly flammable residue that builds up in the flue that lines the chimney. Inspect the interior The interior of a wood-burning fireplace is likely lined with fire bricks. Check for cracks and loose joints. Hire a professional mason to make any repairs, as special materials are needed to withstand the heat of fires.

Install a chimney cap and screen According to Family Handyman, a chimney cap is a protective covering that goes over the top of the chimney.

It is made of steel or copper mesh with a cap on top. This protects the chimney from rain and downdrafts and keeps animals and debris from getting into the chimney.

Prune overhanging branches If there are trees close to the home and the chimney, cut them back, as they can be a fire hazard. Branches and leaves also can restrict the proper draft of the chimney.

Assess the outdoor vent Gas fireplaces typically emit exhaust through a vent in the home. Remove any blockages from the vent, including leaves, cobwebs and debris. Check glass or other coverings The glass or face of the fireplace helps regulate carbon monoxide exposure and protects people from the flames. Be sure the glass covering is intact.

Clean ceramic logs Gas fireplaces use ceramic logs, rocks or beads that can become dusty. Clean them prior to use. Dirty ceramic logs can be a fire hazard and produce an unpleasant burning smell.

Check the blower and pilot If the fireplace has an electric blower, clean and dust it so it doesn’t become clogged. Inspect the pilot light for any wear and tear that includes wiring or structural issues. It takes several steps to prepare fireplaces for cold weather seasons when they’re most likely to be used with frequency.

Three modern kitchen features to consider COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 21, 2023 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home I 2023

It’s well documented that kitchens are the most popular rooms in many homes. Kitchens are where families tend to congregate during holiday celebrations, and many a child has tackled their homework as mom or dad prepares dinner just a few steps away.

With so much time spent in the kitchen, it’s no wonder kitchen renovations are popular. In fact, data from the National Association of Home Builders indicates kitchens are the most popular room to remodel. Whether homeowners are planning a full scale remodel or a few tweaks to update the room, the following are three popular features of modern kitchens.

1. Kitchen island A recent survey from the interior design experts at Houzz found that kitchen islands are popular for a variety of reasons. Fiftyeight percent of respondents indicated they enjoy eating at kitchen islands, while 49 percent reported they like islands for entertaining. Forty-five percent of respondents like socializing around kitchen islands. Islands provide a versatile functionality that comes in handy when preparing meals on typical weeknights and when hosting friends and family on special occasions like the holidays and birthdays. Islands come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be customized to fit just about any space. Mobile islands can be utilized in small kitchens when homeowners want the extra prep space but think the kitchen would be too cramped if a permanent island were added.

2. Deep sink The popularity of farmhouse style sinks is proof that large and deep sinks are soughtafter among today’s homeowners. Farmhouse sinks may be best suited to a particular aesthetic, but a 2021 study from the National Association of Home Builders found that side-by-side double sinks and walk-in pantries were the most popular of 30 listed kitchen features. That study surveyed more than 3,200 recent and prospective home buyers. Deep sinks are especially useful for people who love to cook, making them a solid addition to any kitchen where home chefs ply their trade most nights of the week.

3. Storage As the NAHB study indicated, kitchen storage space is sought after among modern homeowners. As home cooks expand their culinary horizons and cook more elaborate meals, they need extra places to store specialty pots and pans, ingredients and other materials. Homeowners looking to add more storage in the kitchen can consult with a local contractor about how to create such space. A walk-in pantry can do the trick, but homeowners with kitchens where space is more limited may need to get a little more creative. Sliding-door pantries and roll-out shelving in existing cabinets can add functional space in kitchens with close quarters.

Modern kitchens are visual marvels and highly functional spaces. A new island, a tdeep sink and some extra storage space can help homeowners transform their existing kitchens into spaces that cater to their every need.

I DARE YOU TO BE LOVED BY GOD

AGE 88 - PLAINWELL, MI

When people listen, God speaks. When people obey, God acts. When God acts, people are changed. The King is mighty, he loves justice – you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. Psalm 99:4-5 We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 REFLECTION: The election of God is not a topic for most preachers today and I think that’s sad. God is sovereign, loving, and kind and he draws us to himself. In today’s reading God demonstrates his love by creating the Thessalonians community of believers. Paul is affirming them because they are illustrating that God’s grace has changed them. In other words, God willingly laid his love upon them. Paul sees this remarkable act and tells them that their calling is now to announce the Good News of Jesus Christ. They show the visible markings of God’s power among them. There is visual evidence of their sure election. It was not just preaching the Word that brought them to this honor, but the work of the Holy Spirit actively working in their lives. No matter their previous condition the power of the Spirit transformed them. Paul was excited to recognize them as his colleagues. This sovereign power of God is the spiritual energy for us to believe in Christ. PRAYER TIME: O Holy King of kings, you are mighty and love justice. I praise Your Holy name Lord Jesus for what you have done to me and what you have done for me. May the people of Plainwell and Otsego gather in their churches this week with joy. May they stand before you and exalt you Lord God in prayer and worship. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. Need a Bible? Stop by our Little Library, located in front of our building. Leland L. SEMM

AGE 85 - PLAINWELL, MI

Leland L. Semm of Plainwell, Michigan (formerly of Waukegan, Illinois), age 85, passed away on October 5, 2023. He was born to Gerald and Irene Semm on August 31, 1938 in Sarona, Wisconsin. Leland was married to his high school sweetheart, Sally Semm (Miller) in 1956. They had three boys, Ricky of Colorado, Brian (Teri) of Michigan and Michael (Robin) of Michigan. Ricky had three children, Amanda (Aaron) Lawson, Stacey (Aaron) Kruse and Bryan (Amber) Semm, all of Colorado. Brian had two children, Shelly Semm and Jacqueline Semm, both of Wisconsin. Michael had two children, Anthony Semm and Nicholas Semm, both of Michigan. Leland worked for United Parcel Service (UPS) in various roles for 36 years. He spent the majority of his career with UPS as a CDL truck driver and member of Teamsters 705. When he retired at the age of 55, he and Sally traveled between their homes in Waukegan, Illinois and Hayward, Wisconsin where they enjoyed viewing black bears on their property. Leland enjoyed taking short day trips and loved stopping at estate and garage sales along his way. He would pick up lawn mowers, snow blowers and various garden tools that weren’t working properly. He would then spend hours tinkering with them and refurbishing to resell. Leland was well known in his neighborhood for having the most well kept lawn. You could regularly see him out in his yard where he tended to the yard and Sally tended to the flowers. Leland and Sally also spent many years enjoying snowmobiling in Upper Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Leland is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-seven years Sally A. Semm (Miller); loving children Ricky, Brian (Teri) and Michael (Robin); sister Anna Mae and brother Randy (Dianne); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Irene of Wisconsin and one brother, Timothy (Sue) of Illinois. The family would like to thank CorsoCare Hospice and Briarwood Assisted Living for their care and compassion during Leland’s fight with Alzheimer’s. Leland and Sally have chosen to delay services to celebrate their lives until they can be together in eternity. They have chosen a companion urn and their lives will be celebrated together once Sally joins Leland in Heaven. Those wishing to offer expressions of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to The Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601. In the Old Testament, God gave the prophet Amos the vision of a plumb line to show how God’s people were far out of alignment with God (Amos 7:7). This brings us to our relationship with Jesus Christ who was in perfect alignment with God’s will for His life and wants us to be the same. We call it “being on the same page” meaning being in alignment with God through Jesus Christ. This raises a few questions as follows:
