Dear Tri-Village Community, Merging the Grandview/Marble Cliff and Upper Arlington Chambers of Commerce in early 2016 to become the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership has proven to be a lucrative decision. Expanding our boundaries and marketing area has introduced businesses and consumers alike to all our area has to offer. It is our belief that a strong business climate and desirable community go naturally together. Our schools, local government, libraries and service organizations are valued partners and we work closely with them to make the Tri-Village area an attractive place to live and work. Members of the Tri-Village community: In early 2016 the Grandview Area Chamber of Commerce and the Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce merged to form the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership, which now proudly has over 600 member businesses. Tour Guide Grandview is also home to three popular food and drink tours. Tours allow visitors to take a closer look at the evolving craft beer, spirits and food scene. All of the tours are offered year round and are great for groups or individuals to enjoy. Columbus Food Adventures Columbus Food Adventures offers a variety of tours throughout Columbus, their Grandview Avenue Walking Food Tour is one of their most popular among the mix. The contrast between the established and the new is one of the themes of this food tour. Digfest
New development in the Grandview Yard area offers residents more options for their out of town guests to stay. The area is not only home to the Hyatt Place Columbus OSU, but also to the Courtyard by Marriott Columbus OSU, which opened in 2016. The new hotel offers 135 rooms with suites featuring a fantastic view of the Columbus skyline. The property is also conveniently connected to the new Grand Event Center. Impeccably designed, The Grand Event Center’s expansive ballroom is inviting with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing the venue to be flooded with warm, natural light, creating the perfect venue for everything from weddings to meetings and conferences. With the new additions in Grandview Yard, restaurants and shops continue to open their doors, and with the increased popularity of tours through the area, Destination Grandview is even more positioned to continue its mission. Drinks in Grandview Festival (Digfest) has become a staple event in the Tri-Village area. What began in 2011 as a small local event with just 13 vendors has now grown to over 40 vendors and 5,000 patrons. With the growth of the craft beer industry in general, the event continues to evolve. Columbus is home to nearly 40 craft breweries, several micro-distilleries and Tri-Village Chamber Partnership photo wineries, and has been named as one of the top 10 cities in the country for beer drinkers. Held each June at The Grandview Yard, the event will continue to be a signature summer festival for the area. Patrons will enjoy a variety of craft beer and spirits in an outdoor setting complimented by several music acts and many restaurant choices. Admission is free so everyone can enjoy the atmosphere and music. Drink tickets are purchased on-site or on the website, www.grandviewdigfest.com and food is purchased individually from each vendor. Digfest is a lively community festival that gets better every year. The Tri-Village Chamber Partnership is proud of what the event has become and looks forward to seeing everyone in June. Digfest. Tri-Village Restaurant Week Each fall, the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership joins forces with the Columbus Young Professionals to host a local restaurant week. Participating restaurants in the Grandview, M arble Cliff and Upper Arlington communities offer a special menu with three courses and one price point. For instance, patrons will receive an appetizer, entrée and dessert for either $15, $25 or $35 depending on the restaurant. Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Historical Society
he study of local history provides a keen insight into the creation and development of each of the communities in the Tri-Village area. Local residents who understood the importance of maintaining the history of Grandview Heights and Marble Cliff for future generations established the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Historical Society on September 18, 1974. Inspiration for the concept of a local historical society came from research into Grandview Heights and Marble Cliff history by teachers at Edison Elementary School who were involving their students in programs designed to develop knowledge and appreciation of their heritage and local history. However the creation of the Society can be attributed to the first board of trustees consisting of Win Keller, Ann Larrick, Virginia Abbot, Dirk Voelker and Joseph Wyman. The timing of the society’s beginning was fortuitous. The Society rode the wave of interest in local history as part of the national bicentennial of 1976. The Society’s first major project was the publication of Sheltering a Heritage, a history of local homes built before 1912, which remains available through the Society. The Society is primarily supported through its membership, which is open to the public (information about becoming a member can be found

on the Society’s home page at www. ghmchs.org). The purpose of the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Historical Society is to discover, collect, and preserve information, materials, structures, and landmarks which may help to

establish interest in the historic record of the founding and development of the communities of Grandview Heights, Marble Cliff, and early Upper Arlington, and thereby educate the citizens of these communities and other interested parties. It is also to
maintain an archive and historical library, both physical and virtual, for the research and preservation of the early history of the Tri-village area and its environment. Since its inception, the Society’s archives have been housed in space provided by the Grandview Heights Public Library. The archives are restricted access, so requests for information can be provided by e-mail (info-request@ghmchs.dreamhosters. com), and a Board member will respond. Please include your contact information. If you are interested in donating local historical materials, information or artifacts contact the Society by the e-mail above or mail (GH/MCHS, 1685 W. First Ave, Grandview Heights, OH 42312) and provide the relevant information. The Society sponsors a tri-annual historical house tour, the most recent in 2016, that highlights homes of note in Grandview Heights and Marble Cliff. Many noted Columbus dignitaries called these communities home. The Society also offers for sale a limited collection of publications of local history. Upper Arlington Civic Organizations The City of Upper Arlington Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) was created to assist the City in the revitalization and enhancement of property, and to advance, encourage and promote economic and civic development for the City. Public and private sector board members serve by appointment and invitation. Upper Arlington Rotary Club consists of approximately 170 community leaders making a difference locally and globally. The club has contributed more than $1.5 million and more than 250,000 hours of volunteer service since its founding in 1972. The club gathers each Tuesday at noon at the Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington and is part of Rotary
International, and association of more than 22,000 Rotary Clubs in 160 countries throughout the world. For more information, visit www. uarotary.org The Upper Arlington Civic Association’s mission is to plan and execute community events designed to bring families, friends and neighbors together for holiday and civic activities. The UACA is comprised of volunteer directors who raise money to fund events via The Walk (annual door-to-door fundraiser) and through corporate fundraising activities. Annual events include UA State, Easter Candy Hunt, Golden Apple Awards, Memorial Day Run, Upper Arlington 4th of July Parade & Fireworks, Labor Neighbor Day, Golden Bear Scare and Christmas in the Park.
The Older Adult Resource Group is dedicated to promoting a dignified, healthy quality of life for older adults by advocating for vital services, offering lifelong learning activities, recognizing the continued and varied accomplishments of older adults and being an accessible and trusted community resource to the seniors in the Tri-Village area. The OARG presents two senior events each year. Senior Expo and Workshop, held each Spring at the Upper Arlington Public Library, showcases the Older Adult members Resource Group of the OARG and presents timely educational seminars. And, each November, the OARG sponsors the Medicare Update at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church. This event features speakers from the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program.

lans are underway to celebrate Upper Arlington’s 100th birthday in golden fashion in 2018. Nearly a century after its establishment by brothers King and Ben Thompson as what they called the “Country Club District,” the Upper Arlington of today remains an idyllic, bedroom community. Over the years, the city has grown from 840 acres that the Thompson brothers bought from James T. Miller in 1913, to a 9.77-square-mile city with about 34,000 residents and, seemingly, just as many accolades. Currently, Upper Arlington ranks No. 1 on Niche.com’s list as the “Best Place to Live in Ohio” – with Tri-Village neighbor Grandview Heights coming in at No. 2 – based on the strengths of its schools, real estate market and safety, as well as health and fitness. It’s a top-25 community in America for neighborhoods and small businesses, according Welcomemat Services. And its blend of restaurants, low crime, daily commute, income and housing earned it a No. 3 spot on CreditDonkey.com’s “Happiest Places in Ohio.” Those qualities of life, as well as “UA’s” people and moments, all will be parts of “Upper Arlington 1918-2018: A Cherished Past, A Golden Future,” which next year will commemorate 100 years of the community and its history. March 2018 is the primary starting point, according to Emma Speight, city of Upper Arlington community affairs director. Details and dates will be finalized throughout this year by a Centennial Task Force comprised of volunteers and community group representatives who’ve been brainstorming and organizing for nearly two years. www.chamberpartnership.org • 13

“The community can expect to enjoy a Fourth of July celebration based on the centennial, there will be a ceremony marking the start of the centennial that will hopefully include a groundbreaking for a significant ‘legacy project’ and many other programs and events will celebrate the centennial throughout the year,” Speight said. “The (Centennial Task Force) has reached out to the community for ideas and feedback on how to celebrate.” The task force has focused on encouraging civic groups to “centennialize” their 2018 programs and events. It’s also coordinated with community groups and local schools to incorporate the centennial logo into their respective merchandise. From 2014-15, the task force asked residents to “Help Us Discover 100 Ways to Celebrate.” Commitments for specific activities haven’t been made, but ideas sprung from that effort included creating a centennial ice cream flavor, hanging street light banners, positing temporary city markers and establishing a traveling
centennial photo booth. As celebration event dates are shored up, various groups also are planning “legacy projects.” The Upper Arlington Historical Society is producing a new Upper Arlington history book, with research, fact-checking and editing assistance from the Upper Arlington Public Library. The book will be distributed this September. It’s the first update of the publication in 30 years, and not only will it include a new generation of community events and milestones but also a new design and illustrations. “With Upper Arlington’s upcoming centennial, we wanted to give our community a fresh look at its history, while also celebrating some of the things that make our city unique,” said Sara Klein, UAPL digital archives coordinator. “The new history book will be written in an accessible, engaging tone and will feature a mix of photographs — old and new, blackand-white and color. “While the previous history book did a wonderful job of detailing and 2017 Tri-Village Community Directory

Our goal is to produce a book that can be appreciated by younger students, as well as longtime residents -one that brings the story of our community and the vision of its founders to life.” The volunteer Legacy Subcommittee is working to install a “history walk” at Northam Park that would feature plaques detailing UA topics and milestones. It’s also proposing bear sculptures and benches to be constructed at the park. “The proposed design and costs are being developed currently, and the subcommittee hopes to begin a fundraising effort in the spring to help fund this project,” Speight said. “This legacy project was developed over 2016 and included extensive community outreach to see if this idea would have support from residents. 2017 Tri-Village Community Directory

“The hope is to have a groundbreaking tied with the official start of the year’s celebration in March, and for the project to be unveiled at the Fourth of July celebration.” Organizers are hoping that all of Upper Arlington, and even nonresidents, take part in the yearlong centennial celebration, noting it offers opportunities to educate and showcase the community. “This is for the community,” said Charlie Groezinger, UA Historical Society president. “The residents of UA take pride in their community.” Moreover, it’s a chance to come together as a community in celebration of a city’s heritage and its hopes for tomorrow. “A century is a milestone for any community and presents an opportunity for citizens to reflect on and celebrate their city’s past, present and future,” Speight said. “By its nature, celebrating the centennial of a city is a community milestone.” Those still wishing to contribute celebration ideas can email info@ uaoh100.org, and anyone interested in more information on centennial planning events, projects and the celebration committee can go to uaoh100.org.

The TriVillage Chamber Partnership works closely with the Upper Arlington High School to bring real-world experience to its educational and career development programs. Entrepreneurship Class The high school’s entrepreneurship class allows students to develop a business concept from scratch; apply fundamental business principles in areas such

as strategy, marketing, legal and finance; and prepare detailed business plans. Each semester culminates with teams presenting their ideas to a panel of judges from the local business community. Top teams have gone on to participate in statewide business-plan competitions, with the opportunity to earn scholarship money for college. Focus On Your Future: 500 UA Freshman Explore Areas of Career Interest Each student gets to choose three career cluster areas of interest to explore, and over 35 local professionals volunteer their time to meet with interested students. Columbus State Community College supplies 10 human resource professionals to discuss soft skills with freshman; the handshake, eye contact, communication skills, etc.

Programs, places and events await all residents Grandview Heights Parks & Recreation Department Responsibilities and Overview: The Grandview Heights Parks & Recreation Department provides recreation, educational and fitness programs for all ages. It maintains approximately 45 acres of park lands and green spaces as well as all city and park trees. In addition it organizes and supports community events, operates the Municipal Pool, maintains and rents two park shelter houses, operates a seasonal skate park and oversees the community garden plots. Parks & Recreation Department programs and events are described in the semi-annual Grandview Community Program Guide, which is published in early March for spring and summer activities and early September for autumn and winter programs. Community Events The Parks & Recreation Department, often in partnership with other community groups, offers a variety of special events throughout the year. Village of Marble Cliff offers friendly people and charming places
he village of Marble Cliff is a small village of 175 acres located south of West Fifth Avenue, between the cities of Grandview Heights and Upper Arlington. It was one of the first suburbs of Columbus, settled as a community in 1890, and incorporated as a village on Oct. 12, 1901. The 2010 Census estimated the Village population as 573 residents. Because it is enclosed between surrounding cities and natural barriers, there is little probability that Marble Cliff will grow in area, ensuring its peaceful quaintness. Tree-lined streets, charming homes, churches and some multifamily and business offices characterize the

village of Marble Cliff. Approximately 50 businesses are located within the community and provide a solid tax base for the village. Marble Cliff was named one of central Ohio’s best neighborhoods and top places to live in Columbus Monthly’s December 2006 issue. Described as “inner-ring suburban” and a “face-toface-community,” the article mentioned the village’s friendly feeling, sense of safety and strong pulse of activity.
