President’s Report Columbus College of Art & Design

November 2021

Dear Friend, As this goes to print, we are two months into the 2021–2022 academic year, a year we hope brings us closer to our pre-pandemic “normal”—or perhaps something we should all be striving for, a new post-pandemic “better than normal.”

Senior Leadership Team Dr. Melanie Corn, President Julie Taggart, Provost Thomas Dotson, Chief Financial Officer Matt Gardzina, Chief Information Officer D. Jean Hester, Vice President for Enrollment Management Chris Mundell, Vice President for Institutional Engagement Jill Moorhead, Vice President for Marketing & Communications Dr. Joshua Butts, Dean of Faculty Erika Gable, Associate Vice President for Development Tom Gattis, Dean of Undergraduate Studies Susan Kannenwischer, Associate Vice President for Financial Aid & Registration Athena Sanders, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students

This inaugural President’s Report is intended to summarize key information from the 2020–2021 academic year, as well as our near-term plans. Last year was one of the most challenging in our 140-plus-year history, and yet, we found ways to thrive and to look ahead. We shifted to a primarily remote mode for many of our classes and public programs, which opened our offerings to more people in more places. In July 2020, we formed the Presidential Commission on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, whose resulting action plan is guiding work throughout the college. And spring 2021 saw us launch a new Graduate Studies program—a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Retail Design—and introduce our new Strategic Plan, The CCAD Way, which sets our path for the next six years. You’ll hear a lot about “The CCAD Way” over the coming months and years. Frankly, it’s in our DNA. It encompasses three key characteristics that together help our students flourish in their careers and make us a top art and design college: Proven Potential, Creative Collaboration, and Intentional Inclusivity. (More on page 10.) This past year pushed us to be more innovative and creative than ever, and even as we celebrate the joy of having our studios and classrooms again filled with conversation and creative activity, we’ll work to retain the best of what we learned. We have many reasons for optimism as this academic year unfolds. I’m proud of where we are, and I appreciate your partnership as we move forward together.

Dr. Jennifer Schlueter, Dean of Graduate Studies Richelle Simonson, Associate

Sincerely,

Vice President for Operations Beverly Thomas, Associate Vice President for Human Resources

Hello fellow friends of CCAD, On your screen is a publication that provides an overview of where Columbus College of Art & Design is at this moment in time and where it is headed. On July 1, 2021, I became the newest chair of CCAD’s Board of Trustees, a position I hold with great honor. After all, as Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, I have seen firsthand the many talented and creatively driven students CCAD produces each year. We at Jeni’s have benefitted from CCAD and its grads—and so, too, has Columbus. Our city is the thriving hub of culture and commerce that it is because of CCAD and its generations of graduates.

CCAD Board of Trustees Jeni Britton, Chair Susan D. Rector, Vice Chair Doug Klamfoth, Treasurer

In August, I had the opportunity to be part of Convocation, celebrating CCAD’s newest incoming class of artists and designers. These young people come to CCAD with tremendous promise and passion. They leave with real-world experience, an informed approach to their practice, meaningful industry connections, and important professional skills. CCAD has held a special place in my heart since I first stepped foot on campus to attend Saturday Morning Art Classes as a teenager. This is an institution that I’ve long loved and admired, and while the challenges of our era are numerous, CCAD has not just held steady, but progressed, introducing revamped and new programs such as Corporate & Community Partnerships and a new graduate degree, the Master of Professional Studies in Retail Design (for which I’m an advisor).

Saundra K. Schuster, Esq.,

For nearly 145 years, CCAD has played a key role in commerce, education, and culture in Columbus and around the world. It is a legacy that informs the college’s work today and paves the way for a prosperous future. I am grateful that I—and you—can witness that legacy and play a role in helping CCAD realize its promise.

Michael Krouse

Our values & actions Introducing The CCAD Way In January 2021, CCAD launched a new Strategic Plan, The CCAD Way, which charts the course for the college from 2021 to 2026. Included in the plan are eight key objectives, ranging from activating alumni and empowering students to reimagining the college’s campus, which is located in downtown Columbus’ Discovery District. Each objective is supported by numerous strategies, and our progress will be measured by 10 key performance indicators. Read the full plan at ccad.edu/strategicplan.

Defining The CCAD Way The CCAD Way is one of Creative Collaboration, Intentional Inclusivity, and Proven Potential. It’s at the heart of how CCAD operates. It is about a spirit of Creative Collaboration that not only prepares our students for contemporary art and design practice, but brings a flexible and creative mindset to businesses and institutions around us. It is also about Intentional Inclusivity, bringing a diverse group of students to the college and creating an equitable institution that will help them thrive in their careers and diversify the region’s—the nation’s—creative workforce. And with those two elements as a foundation, it’s about the Proven Potential of CCAD and countless stories of how our students and alumni enhance the world around us, instigate big changes in culture and commerce, and use art and design for the good of Columbus—and around the globe. Presidential Commission on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion President Melanie Corn established the Presidential Commission on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in July 2020. This diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and trustees aims to ensure that the college fulfills its commitment to being an intentionally inclusive community. Here are a few highlights from the Commission’s first year: Established a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Action Plan that prioritizes steps to improve CCAD in four key areas: Community Connections, Academic & Studio Experience, Institutional Policies & Practices, and Campus Life. Delivered a six-week DEI training course designed to give CCAD faculty members new insights, tools, and approaches they can use to create more inclusive and equitable learning experiences for all students. Created and awarded CCAD Diversity Impact Scholarships, which seek to advance our efforts to continually increase the diversity of our student population. Launched a Bias Incident Response Team to provide a confidential option for sharing concerns about the campus climate. Examined our hiring practices with the unambiguous goal of developing new strategies for increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of our faculty and staff. Partnered with CCAD Visiting Artists & Scholars Series to feature artists, writers, and thinkers whose work centers on DEI concerns, including: adrienne maree brown, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Nell Painter. Co-wrote a letter with Dr. Corn that condemned police violence and encouraged the City of Columbus to take measurable steps towards police reform and racial justice.

Real-world learning CCAD creates outstanding collaborative learning partnerships for talented students and alumni, expert faculty, and forward-thinking organizations to solve the challenges of today and tomorrow. Last year we partnered with:

What we accomplished After five semesters of collaboration with 99P Labs, CCAD premiered Meraki, a shared mobility concept vehicle designed to be fully autonomous and support the wants and needs of millennials, baby boomers, and rideshare service providers. The multimedia presentation included a research presentation, documentary video, marketing campaign, ride-hailing and attendant apps, and a VR experience.

Check out a video about our partnership with 99P Labs.

We also celebrated our eighth concept vehicle project with Airstream by developing a full-scale prototype and process book for a new exploratory design. Finally, Re-story: Transforming Veteran Stories into Art, a feature-length film of short films, animations, and podcast excerpts from our spring 2019 project with the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System, earned two silver Telly Awards.

Community engagement Continuing & Professional Studies is home to CCAD’s non-degree classes for youth and adults. After a pause in classes due to the pandemic, we relaunched in-person youth programming in summer 2021. Here’s what we accomplished: 495 students in grades 3–12 enrolled in Creative Summer Workshops held over the course of five weeks. 58 students from 11 states attended College Preview, a three-week immersive experience for high school juniors and seniors, in July 2021. CCAD supported four Columbus City Schools students in the Animation track with full scholarships thanks to a grant from the City of Columbus Summer Tech program, funded by the Columbus Department of Technology and SMART Columbus.

What’s ahead CCAD will focus on developing, launching, and expanding professional and career development education for the Columbus region and for alumni. And we will refresh and expand legacy programs such as Saturday Morning Art Classes, as well as build new, impactful, and sustainable community engagement and enrichment programs. Learn about upcoming classes at ccad.edu/takeaclass.

Revolutionizing retail In spring 2021, CCAD launched a new first-of-its-kind graduate program. The Master of Professional Studies in Retail Design provides a cutting-edge approach to learning with a rich mix of theory and practice in a program developed and taught by retail experts. The first cohort, which will shape the future of retail, begins in January 2022.

Supporting students From free weekly fresh produce deliveries to disbursing federal funds to assist with financial hardships caused by the pandemic, here’s how CCAD supported students during this singularly challenging time:

in emergency financial aid and grants

to support mental health

to combat fresh food insecurities

for emergency financial situations

During fiscal year 2020–2021, CCAD received $1.8M in grant funding from the federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II as well as $949K in state Coronavirus Relief Funds. HEERF II funds provided direct emergency financial aid to students and additional Pandemic Grants. State funds allowed CCAD to provide students with facilities, equipment, and IT improvements. CCAD received increased funding from a variety of supporters for our Counseling & Wellness Center, that allowed CCAD students to have the tools to mentally, financially, and physically thrive. CCAD received funding from the Ohio College Initiative Grant, which allowed us to partner with Yellowbird Foodshed, a local produce delivery service, to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to students at no cost to them. The CCAD Student Wellness & Success Fund helps CCAD students secure and/or maintain basic needs and has provided minor financial relief while students care for sick family members. You can help support our students, too. Visit ccad.edu/givetoCCAD.

Serving alumni In fall 2020, CCAD’s Alumni Office launched a three-year strategic plan focused on: •

Cultivating deeper connections with alumni

Establishing event and programming opportunities that offer value and engagement

Cementing the Alumni Office as the central hub for alumni engagement

What we accomplished During the 2020–2021 academic year, the Alumni Office: Created two new alumni event series: one focused on workshops and informational presentations, the other an alumni speaker series that invites alumni to share insights about their work and careers. Four events drew attendees from across the U.S. and abroad. Piloted the CCAD Alumni Mentoring Program, focused on connecting alumni and students. Fourteen alumni were paired with 17 students in the successful pilot program.

What’s ahead •

Continue the new CCAD Alumni Mentoring Program

Reestablish an Alumni Advisory Board to allow for more alumni input in the office’s planning efforts

Relaunch the opportunity for alumni to sell work at Ampersand Emporium, a one-stop shop for CCAD goods and art supplies

Update alumni benefits and services, such as discounts on Continuing & Professional Studies classes

17 Major wins for students & alumni CCAD students and alumni continued to prosper and receive recognition in their fields. Jack Hopkins (Film & Video, 2024) parlayed a first-year class project, a found footage documentary, into the Telly Award-winning Joy Division: The Voice Remains, which was accepted into the Rock this Town Film Festival in Pau, France. Dan Scanlon (Illustration, 1998), Vice President, Creative at Pixar Animation Studios, earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Animated Feature Film category for Onward, which he directed and co-wrote, and was an executive producer on Soul, which took home the Oscar in the animation category. Lalese Stamps’ (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2017) Lolly Lolly Ceramics, pictured, caught the attention of tastemakers far and wide, including Vogue, The New York Times, Bon Appetit, Architectural Digest, and POPSUGAR. Kazamira Walker (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2021) took home top honors at the national American Advertising Awards, winning a first-place Addy for her project featuring the Black Lives Matter movement in Columbus.
