SALLY SALAMANDER Downtown Walking Tour

Spend any time around one of the beautiful rivers in the region, and you may catch a glimpse of South Carolina’s state amphibian, the spotted salamander. While spotted salamanders are fairly large, they can be difficult to see. You’ll enjoy a hunt through downtown Columbia trying to “spot” a friendly new ambassador, Sally Salamander, commissioned by the Leadership Columbia class of 2009. Look for her (she’s likely to turn up anywhere) and you’ll learn something new about the area and its historic and cultural sites. Stop by the Columbia Regional Visitors Center, the first stop on the tour, to pick up a brochure and map, or visit columbiasalamander.com.

South Carolina State House

Don’t miss a chance to visit the magnificent South Carolina State House, the Greek Revival domed structure that is the centerpiece of downtown Columbia. The building is a testament to survival, having withstood Civil War torches, countless rallies and stormy politics. Look for the six stars on the outside of the building that mark spots where Union cannonballs struck. The beautiful grounds are home to numerous monuments, and the interior is filled with marble, granite, stained glass and history.

Tours are offered Monday through Friday, but pick up a brochure and take the State House grounds walking tour anytime.

5

Saluda Shoals Park

Want to get outside, go kayaking, canoeing or fishing? Head to Saluda Shoals Park, just minutes from downtown. This 400-acre environmentally sensitive park on the lower Saluda River offers some of the state’s best trout fishing, plus paved and unpaved trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and a kid-friendly splash pad.

this watery playground. You can camp, lounge on the beach, dine at waterfront marinas, or take a daytime or evening cruise. One popular trip is to Bomb Island, where thousands of purple martins converge in late summer on the largest roosting sanctuary in North America.

9

Historic Columbia Foundation

Take a step back in time and explore life in South Carolina throughout history by touring five historic sites in downtown Columbia. Guided and self-guided tours showcase architecture, artifacts, art and photographs from bygone

eras. A museum shop, located in the historic Robert Mills House, features a sampling of South Carolina-made products, books and souvenirs.

10

Culinary Scene

Quickly becoming a culinary destination, the Columbia area has numerous restaurants known for use of local ingredients, new takes on Southern recipes, casual elegance and up-and-coming chefs. Pair that with the burger and barbecue joints and meat-and-three kitchens that have been serving up local favorites for decades, and you’ll want to extend your stay to try it all.

Columbia’s Districts The greater Columbia area is easily defined and navigated by 12 districts, each with its unique allure. From boutique shopping and fine dining to renovated and repurposed historic structures, each pocket projects its own Southern charm and personality.

Five Points If you went to college in Columbia, Five Points likely holds a dear place in your heart. Located right next to the University of South Carolina campus, the 75-year-old neighborhood is filled with eclectic shops, thriving nightlife and great restaurants. It’s the place to go before a big event or game to snag a new dress or accessory, have dinner and listen to live music.

Grapes and Gallery

City Center/Main Street The heart of Columbia’s downtown starts at the South Carolina State House and continues down Main Street past restaurants, galleries, shops and the world-class Columbia Museum of Art. The corridor has grown into a destination for the arts, with popular festivals and events nearly every week.

Congaree Vista

Gervais & Vine

Years ago, the area between the South Carolina State House and the Congaree River was filled with textile mills and railroad stations. Now, the Congaree Vista has been preserved and remade into a thriving restaurant, shopping and nightlife district. With fine restaurants, boutiques, nightclubs, museums and other attractions tucked into historic buildings, the area strikes the perfect balance between preservation and new life.

70724

Devine Street Tree-lined and picturesque, Devine Street is situated in Shandon, one of Columbia’s oldest residential neighborhoods. Spend the day browsing this mile-long stretch of upscale boutiques for men’s, ladies’ and children’s designer clothing, outdoor gear, footwear, art, jewelry and more. Make time for lunch or dinner at one of the many finedining restaurants or casual cafes.

The area’s other districts, each with its own distinctive character, round out the Columbia region’s wealth of things to do and see. One of the most historic parts of the region, Cayce was home to the area’s first European settlers and a Revolutionary War fort. It also has museums, parks, shopping and neighborhood lunch spots. One of the biggest draws is the riverwalk, a lighted walkway along the Congaree River that includes covered picnic shelters and scenic overlooks. This entertainment district just across the Congaree River from downtown is vibrant and growing. In West Vista, you’ll find taverns, antique shops, coffee shops and Terra, one of the city’s most acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants. Rosewood is a classic neighborhood that’s thriving through renovation. Homes are being nurtured and redone, and new businesses and restaurants cater to growing families and young professionals. It’s a vibrant mix of old and new, with a strong sense of community. If you’re looking for a banh mi sandwich but your friend wants enchiladas, head to Decker Boulevard, which is lined with

international markets, restaurants and shops. There you’ll find goodies from Vietnam, Mexico, Greece, Korea and a passport full of other destinations. The Village at Sandhill is a new take on an old concept – live near where you work, shop and play. The outdoor shopping district combines upscale national shops with department stores and boutiques, sprinkled around great restaurants, a movie theater and sports venues. Harbison is home to the Columbia region’s most concentrated shopping district, with Columbiana Centre mall and miles of popular chain boutiques and restaurants. After

a morning of shopping, go hiking in Harbison State Forest and Saluda Shoals Park, or walking over the Lake Murray Dam. Take a stroll along Lexington’s Main Street, and you’ll find century-old historic buildings as the backdrop to modern bistros and boutiques. The cobblestone streets and brick storefronts welcome visitors with a down-home graciousness you’ll want to bottle and take home. The “capital” of Lake Murray, Chapin’s lure reaches beyond the shoreline with shops, restaurants and great community festivals. It’s a real destination for those looking to relax and enjoy the view.

Itineraries The greater Columbia area offers a diverse array of places to go and things to do, with a little something for everyone. Movie Magic Anchoring the Main Street renaissance is the Columbia Film Society’s Nickelodeon Theatre, the city’s art movie house, which recently moved into a new space. It’s hip and smart, and home to the increasingly important Indie Grits Festival, a two-week juried film festival coupled with music, arts, culture and food designed to “empower all levels of Southern filmmakers.” The Nick, the only nonprofit art house film theater in South Carolina, shows three film screenings daily and welcomes more than 25,000 guests each year.

Q

This local farmer’s market is in the heart of downtown Columbia and boasts many locally made products, produce, crafts and art. To wind down after an adventure-filled day, we enjoy listening to local jazz artists play at music venues and restaurants like Le Café Jazz, Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Ale House and Rosso Trattoria Italia. dining Take a Bite Outta This Fine-dining restaurants are not in short supply in the Columbia region. Solstice Kitchen & Wine Bar pairs an innovative menu with beautiful surroundings. In historic Five Points, Mr. Friendly’s New Southern Cafe takes fine dining and Southern charm to a whole new level with dishes such as blackened shrimp and grits, and its famous baconwrapped filet mignon. On Columbia’s Main Street, P.O.S.H., the signature restaurant in the renovated Sheraton Columbia Downtown Hotel, overlooks the lobby of the former bank.

move it outdoors Quaint sidewalk tables, lovely courtyards and a great view make for an ideal al fresco dining experience. On a warm afternoon, venture to Pasta Fresca or dine on the patio at Café Caturra. Pawleys Front Porch is popular with burger lovers, and Hampton Street Vineyard features new specials daily. Snag an outdoor seat at other area locations, including Cafe Strudel, Il Giorgione Pizzeria & Wine Bar and DiPratos.

New in town Across the Columbia area, new restaurants are joining the culinary scene. The Oak Table is fine dining with a dash of Southern charm. Cola’s Restaurant features unique takes on Southern staples. The Old Mill Brewpub is a new watering hole in Lexington, and in Cross Hill Market you can find Basil Thai Cuisine, American Roadside Burgers, Smashburger and more.

Local Origins Chefs across the Columbia area are partnering with area farmers to showcase local ingredients on their menus. Motor Supply Co. Bistro modifies its menu daily based on what’s available at area farms. Blue Marlin Steaks & Seafood is a go-to for delicious seafood with a Southern twist. Terra lives up to its namesake, with locally sourced menu items prepared in a way that pushes the culinary envelope – in the best way possible. These restaurants, and many others, feature produce from City Roots, a sustainable farm located minutes from Columbia proper.

Q

If you had to choose an appetizer, entrée and dessert from three restaurants in the region, where would you go and what would you choose? It all begins with Terra’s lamb mac – slightly spicy, with a crispy crumb topping and a rich, savory mac-and-cheese base with slow-cooked lamb. For the main course, it’s Blue Cactus’ spicy pork with extra vegetables, bathed in Korean red chili sauce. When ordering dessert, I like to keep it simple. A French crepe with a smear of Nutella and sliced bananas from Crepes & Croissants is kids’ food for adults – simply delicious. Eva Moore, Free Times Start with an appetizer from Rosso Trattoria Italia. I’d suggest ordering the veal bird if the opportunity presents itself. For an entree, try the nigiri combination at Camon Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar. Finally, a sweet capstone to any meal happens at Terra. The homemade cookies and ice cream will, without a doubt, blow your mind. Morihiko Nakahara, South Carolina Philharmonic orchestra

shopping

Locally Made An excursion to a new place is the perfect time to add a special souvenir to your collection, and with numerous shopping districts throughout the area, it’s easy to indulge. Original art and specialty food products, antiques, locally designed apparel, bow ties and handbags can be found at boutiques and festivals throughout the region.

Out in the Open With a year-round temperate climate, open-air malls thrive naturally here. Visit the Village at Sandhill for a variety of popular boutique chains such as Jos. A. Bank and Ann Taylor Loft. In the Forest Acres area, try Trenholm Plaza, a neighborhood shopping center with grocery stores, booksellers and boutiques, and the new Cross Hill Market, anchored by Whole Foods. The Shoppes at Woodhill features a newly renovated Target, as well as Pier One, World Market and several lunch spots. Lexington’s Shoppes at Flight Deck has a collection of restaurants, bars and local shops. And in the Harbison area, Columbiana Station offers a mix of restaurants, including Copper River Grill, and stores such as Garnet & Black Traditions.

awesome Antiques Columbia is a historic city, with lots of treasures to explore. And you can take home a piece of history from one of the area’s many antique markets. Start in West Columbia at 763 Antique Mall, Marketplace on Meeting Street and Armory Auction House, and then head to Carolina Imports and the City Market Antiques Mall in the Congaree Vista. The funky Columbia Antique Mall on nearby Huger Street is like a museum. Other great finds are at Almost Antiques on Lake Murray Boulevard, High Noon in Irmo and the Ivy House Antiques Mall in northeast Columbia.

Cocky Couture Whether you prefer to spend game day in a jersey or would rather sport a bow tie or sundress, Columbia retailers have you covered. Try Addam’s University Bookstore, South Carolina Book Store, the Gamecock Stop and Todd & Moore Sporting Goods for licensed University of South Carolina apparel and souvenirs. Brittons and Granger Owings have a selection of bow ties, while Wish and M-Boutique boast racks of game-day dresses. Or, try Miss Cocky for a bit of everything mentioned above!

Q

On a Saturday morning stroll, what shops do you like to visit?

My ideal Saturday morning stroll would begin at a delightful shop in West Columbia called The Eclectic House. From jewelry to art and everything in between, you can be sure to find it here. I then wander down to the Old Mill Antique Shop on State Street, where I always find a blast from the past that brings back fun memories.

Columbia’s savvy shoppers love to get decked out in a new outfit for any occasion! From getting fitted at LaRoque for a signature dress, accessorizing at Pink Sorbet or Just the Thing, to completing the look with shoes from Kick’s Exceptional Shoes, exploring Devine Street for the latest trends is truly a fabulous experience for any stylish gal.
