WELCOME TO ENCORE! Encore! Educational Theatre Company (in Hebrew, Hadran) is pleased to welcome you to West Side Story. The presentation you are about to see is the culmination of months of rehearsal and effort, outstanding talent, and devoted work. We are blessed with a company of stalwarts and newcomers who together have forged a “family” that is much to be envied in community theatre. We are sure that their abilities and enthusiasm will communicate itself to you “in song and dance.” Encore!, established in Jerusalem in 2006, presents the classics of the musical stage as well as lesser-known and original works, in order to expose audiences to this repertoire and, in particular, encourage young people to be the theatre-going public of the future. Encore! has developed concert programmes on the lives of Al Jolson (The Cantor’s Son), Irving Berlin (Say It With Music), and the Gershwin Brothers (By George and Ira), as well as a revue of songs from Broadway shows with Jewish themes (On Broadway with a Yiddishe Ta’am), which have been performed for audiences in Jerusalem, Netanya, and Petach Tikva; presented a musical biography, Knights of Song at the Bible Lands Museum; presented concert versions of Trial by Jury, H.M.S. Pinafore, and The Mikado (the last two with the Israel Chamber Orchestra at the Tel-Aviv Museum of Art), and produced fully-staged presentations of The Mikado, The Wizard of Oz, The Yeomen of the Guard, Oklahoma!, The Pirates of Penzance, Fiddler on the Roof, Ruddigore, Grease, Carousel and H.M.S Pinafore. Encore! has also cooperated in summer workshops to train children and teenagers in aspects of stagecraft, and produced an original chamber opera, The Keys to the City, marking the 90th anniversary of the Turkish “surrender” of Jerusalem to the British at Hanukah 5678 (December 1917). ABOUT WEST SIDE STORY 3

West Side Story is widely considered one of the greatest achievements of American musical theater. A version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet set in modern times, West Side Story tells of star-crossed lovers in the New York City slums of the 1950s: Maria, the Puerto Rican immigrant, and Tony, American-born. Their love is tragically thwarted because of the ethnic hatred between their communities. The lovers’ story, and the story of the rival Puerto Rican and American gangs (Sharks and Jets), is told through the thrilling use of words, music, and dance. The show was created by seasoned Broadway veterans at the height of their creative powers, along with relative newcomers (destined for future greatness): Jerome Robbins (director and choreographer), Leonard Bernstein (music), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics, to his first Broadway show), and Arthur Laurents (book, to his first musical). West Side Story was positively received by critics when it came out in 1957. Typical of the reviews was John Chapman’s from the New York Daily News: “The American theatre took a venturesome forward step…This is a bold new kind of musical theatre… It is, to me, extraordinarily exciting.” The show’s major cultural impact, however, was really only felt four years later, when the movie version of the musical achieved unprecedented success, winning 10 Oscars (including the award for Best Movie of 1961). Its music and lyrics, which in 1957 had been considered complex and perhaps overly sophisticated, achieved wide popular acceptance. Singers recorded versions of the show’s songs, and numbers like “Maria”, “Tonight” and “America” became well-known classics of the American songbook. West Side Story was always an anomaly, particularly within the context of its specific “golden age of musicals” (the period between Oklahoma in 1942, and Fiddler on the Roof in 1964). West Side Story told a violent, realistic, story, with relatively little comic relief. The ending was stark, with three of the show’s main characters dead. The show did not provide the happy, storybook moral that was so identified with the American musical up to that time, specifically that love will triumph, despite any and all challenges. Instead, the show aspired to a lyric realism, telling a story of bigotry through the abstract stage techniques of dance, music, and lyrics. In fact, it marked the high point of Broadway musicals in its successful integration of the basic tools of musical theater into an integrated whole. This was the creators’ intention, and their aspirations were realized. In Sondheim’s book of lyrics, Finishing the Hat, he writes, “For most people, West Side Story is about racial prejudice and urban violence, but what it’s really about is theater: musical theater, to be more precise. It’s about the blending of book, music, lyrics and, most important, dance into the seamless telling of a story.” It is both because of this successful blending in the service of story-telling, as well as the emotional story that is told, that West Side Story has remained so beloved for more than 50 years.

Synopsis of 9

Plot

Act 1

Two teenage gangs, the Jets (White) and the Sharks (Puerto Rican), struggle for control of the neighborhood, amidst police whistles and taunts (“Prologue”). They are warned by Lt. Schrank and Officer Krupke to stop fighting on their beat. The police chase the Sharks off, and the Jets plan how they can assure their continued dominance of their street. The Jets’ leader, Riff, suggests setting up a rumble with the Sharks. He plans to make the challenge to Bernardo, the Sharks’ leader, that night at the neighborhood dance. Riff wants to convince his friend and former member of the Jets, Tony, to meet the Jets at the dance, but some of the Jets question his loyalty to their gang (“Jet Song”). Riff meets Tony while he’s working at Doc’s Drugstore to persuade him to come. Loyal to Riff, Tony agrees, but he wants no further part of gang life and imagines a better future (“Something’s Coming”). Maria works in a bridal shop with Anita, the girlfriend of her brother, Bernardo. Maria has just arrived from Puerto Rico, and her family has selected Chino, a member of the Sharks, to be her future husband. Anita makes Maria a dress to wear to the neighborhood dance. At the dance, after introductions, the teenagers begin to dance; soon a challenge dance is called (“Dance at the Gym”), during which Tony and Maria (who aren’t taking part in the challenge dance) see each other across the room and are drawn to each other. They dance together; forgetting the tension in the room, fall in love, and try to kiss, but Bernardo pulls his sister from Tony and sends her home with Chino. Riff and Bernardo agree to meet for a War Council at Doc’s, a drug store which is considered neutral ground, but meanwhile, an infatuated and happy Tony finds Maria’s building and serenades her outside her bedroom (“Maria”). He appears on her fire escape, and the two profess their love for one another (“Balcony Scene (Tonight)”). Meanwhile, Anita and the other Shark girls discuss the differences between the territory of Puerto Rico and the mainland United States of America (“America”). The Jets get antsy while waiting for the Sharks at Doc’s Drug Store. They poke fun at all of the adults who try to make sense of what they do (“Gee, Officer Krupke”). The Sharks arrive to discuss weapons to use in the rumble. Tony suggests “a fair fight” (fists only), which the leaders agree to, despite the other members’ protests. Bernardo expects that he will fight Tony, but must settle for fighting Diesel instead. This is followed by a monologue by the ineffective Lt. Schrank trying to find out the location of the rumble. Tony tells Doc about Maria. Doc is worried for them while Tony is convinced that nothing can go wrong; he is in love. Tony meets Maria at the bridal shop the next day, where they dream of their wedding (“One Hand, One Heart”). She asks Tony to stop the fight, which he agrees to do. Tony, Maria, Anita, Bernardo (and the Sharks), and Riff (and the Jets) all anticipate the events to come that night (“Tonight (Quintet)”). The gangs meet each other under the highway, and as the fight between Bernardo and Diesel is just beginning, Tony arrives and tries to stop the rumble. Though Bernardo taunts Tony, ridiculing his attempt to make peace and provoking him in every way, Tony keeps his composure. When Bernardo pushes Tony, Riff punches him in Tony’s defense. The two draw their switchblades and get in a knife fight (“The Rumble”). Tony warns Riff to back away, but Riff shakes him off and continues the fight. In an important moment of the show, Riff has an opportunity to stab Bernardo, but Tony holds him back. After shaking off Tony, Riff returns to the fight but is accidentally stabbed and killed by Bernardo in the process. Tony then takes Riff ’s knife and kills


Bernardo in a fit of rage. The two gangs then go into a free-for-all. The sound of approaching sirens is heard, and everyone scatters, except Tony, who stands in shock at what he has done. The tomboy Anybodys, who stubbornly wishes that she could become a Jet, tells Tony to flee from the scene at the last moment. Only the bodies of Riff and Bernardo remain.

Act 2 Back at home, Maria has not heard the news and daydreams happily about meeting Tony, with her friends—Rosalia, Consuelo, Teresita and Francisca (“I Feel Pretty”). Just then, Chino brings the bad news that Tony has killed Bernardo. Maria flees to her bedroom, praying that Chino is mistaken. Tony arrives to see Maria, and in a fit of rage she throws her fists at him until he finally calms her down. They plan to run away together as the walls of Maria’s bedroom disappear, and they find themselves in a dreamlike world of peace (“Somewhere”). The Jets try their hardest to get their minds off the death of Riff, and let out all of their aggression in the number (“Cool”). The Jets make Diesel the new leader of the gang. Anybodys brings news that she overheard Chino planning to hunt down Tony and kill him. The Jets then spread out to find Tony and protect him. They also accept Anybodys into the Jets. The grieving Anita knocks at Maria’s door. As Tony leaves hurriedly, he tells Maria to meet him at Doc’s so they can run away. Anita understands that Tony has been with Maria, and asks in horror how she can love the man who killed her brother (“A Boy Like That”). Maria responds passionately with her own song (“I Have a Love”). Anita understands that Maria loves Tony as much as she had loved Bernardo. She tells Maria that Chino has a gun and is looking for Tony. Lt. Schrank arrives to question Maria, and Anita reluctantly agrees to go to Doc’s to tell Tony to wait for her. At the store, the Jets taunt Anita with racist innuendo and insults. The taunts turn into physical abuse, and Doc who comes from the cellar to the store is horrified to find the boys nearly raping Anita. In her rage, Anita, tells the Jets that Bernardo was right about them, and then announces that Chino has killed Maria in jealousy and storms out of the store. Doc tells the terrible news to Tony, who has been dreaming of heading to the countryside to have children with Maria. Feeling there is no longer anything to live for; Tony comes out of the store to find Chino, begging him to kill him as well. Just as Tony sees Maria alive, Chino arrives with the gun and shoots Tony in the back. The Jets, Sharks, and adults flock around the lovers. Maria holds Tony in her arms (and sings a quiet, brief reprise of “Somewhere”) as he dies. Angry at the death of another friend, the Jets move towards the Sharks but Maria takes Chino’s gun and tells everyone that hatred is what killed Tony and the others, and that she can kill, because now she hates, too. However, she is unable to bring herself to fire the gun and drops it, broken in grief. Gradually, all the members of both gangs assemble on either side of Tony’s body, showing that the feud is over. ‫שתי כנופיות נוער‪ ,‬אמריקאים )הטילים( ופורטוריקנים )הכרישים(‪ ,‬נאבקים על שליטה בשכונת‬ ‫מגוריהם המוזנחת בניו יורק‪ ,‬תוך כדי שריקות‪ ,‬דחיפות ולעג הדדי )הפרולוג(‪ .‬מפקח המשטרה‬ ‫שרנק והשוטר קרופקי תופסים את החבורות באמצע מאבק‪ ,‬מזהירים אותם להפסיק את‬ ‫המלחמות במשמרת שלהם ומגרשים משם את הכנופיה הפורטוריקנית‪ .‬ריף מנהיג הטילים‬ ‫מציע לקיים קרב עם הכרישים שיכריע למי שייכת השכונה‪ .‬הוא מתכנן להעביר הזמנה‬ ‫רשמית לקרב לברנרדו‪ ,‬מנהיגם של הכרישים‪ ,‬בערב במסיבת הריקודים שתתקיים באולם‬ ‫הספורט של השכונה‪ .‬ריף מתכנן לצרף את טוני‪ ,‬חברו הטוב וראש הכנופיה לשעבר‪ ,‬אבל‬ ‫כמה מהטילים מטילים ספק בנאמנותו להם‪ .‬ריף מוצא את טוני העובד בחנות של דוק‬ ‫ומשכנע אותו להצטרף‪ .‬טוני הנאמן לחברו הטוב ריף נענה לבקשתו‪ ,‬אך מחפש בעצמו משהו‬ ‫אחר בחיים )משהו מתקרב(‪ .‬מריה שהגיעה לא מזמן מפורטו ריקו‪ ,‬עובדת בחנות כלות עם‬ ‫אניטה‪ ,‬חברתו של אחיה ברנרדו‪ .‬משפחתה בחרה עבורה את צ'ינו מהכרישים שהוא חברו‬ ‫הקרוב של ברנרדו‪ ,‬בתור בעלה לעתיד‪ .‬אניטה תופרת למריה שמלה לקראת מסיבת הריקודים‬ ‫שתתקיים בערב‪.‬‬ ‫לאחר מספר הקדמות‪ ,‬המסיבה מתחילה ובני הנעורים רוקדים‪ .‬ואז מתפתח ריקוד משחק‬ ‫)הריקוד באולם הספורט( אשר במהלכו עיניהם של מריה וטוני שאינם לוקחים חלק בריקוד‪,‬‬ ‫נפגשות והם נמשכים אחד אל השנייה‪ .‬הם רוקדים זה מול זו‪ ,‬מבלי להתייחס למה שקורה‬ ‫סביבם‪ .‬הם מתאהבים בין רגע וכמעט מתנשקים‪ ,‬כאשר ברנרדו שתופס פתאום מה קורה‪,‬‬ ‫מרחיק בגסות את טוני מאחותו ושולח אותה הביתה עם צ'ינו‪ .‬ריף מזמין את ברנרדו לקרב‬ ‫ומסכם להיפגש עמו למועצת מלחמה‪ ,‬בחנותו של דוק‪ .‬טוני המאוהב מגלה את מקום מגוריה‬ ‫של מריה וחושף את אהבתו אליה מתחת לחלונה )מריה(‪ .‬מריה יוצאת אל טוני והם שרים‬ ‫יחד את אהבתם )הלילה(‪ .‬בינתיים אניטה וחברותיה שחזרו מן הנשף מתווכחות על היתרונות‬ ‫של החיים באמריקה לעומת החיים בפורטו ריקו )אמריקה(‪.‬‬ ‫הטילים מאבדים את סבלנותם בצפייה לכרישים ליד חנותו של דוק‪ .‬הם משתעשעים על חשבון‬ ‫הממסד ונציגיו‪ ,‬שאינם מצליחים להבין אותם )הי‪ ,‬השוטר קרופקי(‪ .‬הכרישים מגיעים להחליט‬ ‫על סוג הנשק בו ישתמשו בקרב‪ .‬טוני מנסה להרגיע את הרוחות ומציע לנהל "קרב הוגן" עם‬ ‫אגרופים בין שני נציגים בלבד‪ .‬ההחלטה מוסכמת על דעתם של שני המנהיגים‪ ,‬למרות‬ ‫התנגדותם של שאר חברי הכנופיות‪ .‬ברנרדו מצפה להילחם בטוני‪ ,‬אבל נאלץ להסתפק בדיזל‪.‬‬ ‫המפקח שרנק מגיע לחנות ומנסה לשווא לגלות איפה הקרב הולך להתקיים‪ .‬טוני מספר לדוק‬ ‫המודאג על התאהבותו במריה‪ ,‬ומרגיע אותו שכל רע לא יאונה לאהבתם‪.‬‬ ‫ביום למחרת טוני פוגש בסתר את מריה‪ ,‬בחנות הכלות ויחד הם חולמים את טקס החתונה‬ ‫שלהם )יד אחת‪ ,‬לב אחד(‪ .‬מריה מבקשת מטוני למנוע את הקרב וטוני נענה לבקשתה‪ .‬בערב‬ ‫לפני הקרב‪ ,‬טוני‪ ,‬מריה‪ ,‬אניטה‪ ,‬ברנרדו‪ ,‬הכרישים‪ ,‬ריף והטילים‪ ,‬מדמיינים לעצמם כל אחד‬ ‫בחלומו‪ ,‬את האירועים המרגשים המתקרבים )הלילה(‪ .‬בשעה היעודה שתי הכנופיות נפגשות‬ ‫מתחת לכביש המהיר וכאשר הקרב בין ברנרדו לדיזל מתחיל‪ ,‬טוני מגיע ומנסה לעצור בעדם‪.‬‬ ‫ברנרדו מתגרה ומשפיל את טוני‪ ,‬אך טוני שולט בעצמו ולא מגיב‪ .‬כאשר ברנרדו דוחף את טוני‪,‬‬ ‫ריף מתערב ומכניס לו אגרוף‪ .‬ריף וברנרדו שולפים סכינים ונכנסים לקרב פנים אל פנים‬ ‫)הקרב(‪ .‬טוני מזהיר את ריף ודורש ממנו להפסיק‪ ,‬אך ריף ממשיך להילחם‪ .‬ברגע מסוים בדיוק‬ ‫כאשר לריף יש הזדמנות לדקור את ברנרדו‪ ,‬טוני בולם אותו‪ .‬ריף מצליח להשתחרר ממנו‪ ,‬אך‬ ‫בדיוק באותו רגע ברנרדו מצליח לדקור אותו למוות‪ .‬טוני ההמום לוקח את האולר של ריף‬ ‫ובהתקף זעם הוא דוקר את ברנרדו למוות‪ .‬ברגע זה שתי הכנופיות מאבדות שליטה ומתנפלות‬


THE PLAYERS Peter Abelow (Doc) grew up on the West Side of Manhattan and graduated HS of Music & Art, CCNY, Bklyn Law School. Peter & Debbie have four children and are blessed with 11 grandchildren, all living in Israel. He is a licensed tour guide and Associate Director of Keshet - Center for Educational th Encore show. Tourism in Israel. He is thrilled to be in the cast of WSS, his 5th Geula Atlas (Consuelo) studied music at Bar-Ilan University, and some of her previous theater roles include Mr. Brumble, Nancy in Oliver, and May Fuller in Encore’s production of Carousel. Jeff Berk (Lieutenant Schrank) is a lawyer by profession, made aliyah from London in 1978, and has appeared in a variety of musical theatrical roles. Having been rejected for the role of Maria (a prejudiced decision based on sex-discrimination and age-discrimination), Jeff accepted the role of Lieutenant Schrank (who is the epitome of prejudice and discrimination!). Eliana Brown (Rosalia/Dance Captain) is 16 years-old. She studies at the Tzvia Umanuyot Art School, Dance Department. This is her first production with Encore. She has performed in Israel Productions’ The Sound of Music and most recently in Center Stage Theater’s 13 the Musical. In her free time, Eliana hangs out with friends, singing non-stop. Sarit Brown (Paulina) is 21 and lives in the Old City of Jerusalem. Sarit has sung, danced and acted with many productions in Jerusalem over the years, learning from each new experience and character. Sarit looks forward to busting some serious moves this time with this wonderful cast! Chaim (CB) Davies (Snow Boy) performed as a youngster in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Grandpa Joe), returning to theater in 2009 in A Shot in the Dark as a comical police officer. He joined the IDF as a combat soldier for two years, then jumped right into the production of HMS Pinafore. CB has a BA in Government from IDC, specializing in Counter Terrorism.

David Djemal (Riff) Born 1991 in Jerusalem, David has always been drawn to the stage and hopes to act sing, and dance for many years to come. David has played Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (Theatre in the Rough), Hepatitis in God by Woody Allen (Way Off Productions), and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables (Hillel).


Ricky Fleischer (Officer Krupke) Ricky’s love for theater started as the rebel Dick Dudgeon in The Devil’s Disciple. After being a Pirate (Peter Pan & The Pirates of Penzance), founding father (1776), and Policeman (Pirates), he feels he has come full circle. Hopefully, he can keep the kids in line and be a bit of comic relief. Miri Fraenkel (Graziella) Miri has been involved in theatre for a while. Previous major roles include: Liesl (The Sound of Music); Lucy (13 the Musical); Hodel (Fiddler on the Roof); Sandy (Grease); Julie Jordan (Carousel), and Eponine (Les Miserables). Miri will be appearing as Eliza Doolittle in Encore’s upcoming production of My Fair Lady. Danny Freedman (A-Rab / Dance Captain) is 17, and in his senior year at Himelfarb High School, where he is majoring in Biology and Art. This is his 6th show, after being in Peter Pan (Curly); The Sound of Music (Kurt); Oklahoma, 13 the Musical (Malcolm), and Grease (Doody). Danny’s hobbies include cooking, baking and painting. Tamar Geist (Maria) graduated from the Beit-Zvi School of the Performing Arts and is currently finishing her B.Ms at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. She sang the role of Belinda at the H. Purcell Dido and Aenias with the Kamerata Orchestra of Jerusalem, and last year she played the lead role of Marsina in the Israel Musicals production of Kismet. David Gellman (Diesel) is 26 years-old, and a student of archaeology at Hebrew University. He is married to Yedida and father to Noam Yair, his one and a-half month-old son. This is his first time on stage, and he’s had the time of his life singing, acting and dancing with the best cast a guy could ask for! Aryeh Kaufman (Glad Hand) has participated in many past productions both on and off stage, including Grease, 1776 and Oklahoma. Aryeh is very excited to be doing both in this performance, by being lighting technician and playing Glad Hand. He is also very happy to be able to share the theater experience with his wife, the assistant director. Elijah Kochin (Baby John), 16 years-old, ran off to the circus at an early age, realized that they wouldn’t give him steaks quite as often as they fed them to the lions, and ran off to the theatre. There, he learned to imitate social workers (including his mom). He’s in three plays this year, and understudies for the role of an 11th grader at Himmelfarb High School. Lizzy Leff (Anybodys) is in 8th grade at the Charles E. Smith School for the Performing Arts, studying jazz music (as a singer). She made Aliyah to Israel almost 5 years ago. She has been into theater and singing since a very young age, and has been in the Mercaz Hamagshimim production of Grease and in Spontaneous Combustion.

Stephen Lerner (Indio) has returned to the stage after a lengthy absence. He last appeared as Sleepy in his schools’ grade 2 production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Originally from Montreal, Stephen is currently studying Biotechnology and Underwater Basket Weaving at Hebrew University, and is an avid runner and Cinnamon Bun Dough ice cream eater. Flo Low (Anita) is thrilled to be in her third Jerusalem production in this challenging role, after making her Jerusalem debut last year as Miss Lynch in Grease. She made aliyah 8.5 years ago and is a graduate of Barnard-JTS. Flo works in the FSU Department of the JDC. She is grateful to the cast and crew and thanks her mom for coming from the US to support our show. Chani Mehlman (Minnie) is infinitely excited about this fantastic performance. She has a burning passion for dance and applies that grace to the stage as a Jet girl in her debut to Encore’s stage. She hopes to pursue a career in the performing arts and gives much-deserved thanks to the cast and crew for allowing her the opportunity to begin a lifelong dream. Josh Moss (Action) is a medical student and biomedical researcher at the Hebrew University, as well as a part-time freelance web designer. Josh is also an experienced singer, songwriter and guitarist, although he’s a rookie to musical theater. Josh is really excited about playing Action, who in his opinion is one of the most complex characters in the show. Michael Nissan (Bernardo) is 21 years-old, and lives and works in Jerusalem. He is excited to be in his first Encore production. Michael’s last role was in the Belgian writer Mishel De Galderode’s play Hero of the Day, performed in Hebrew at the Nurit Katzir Theatre Program. He is moving to New York in April. Jay O’Brien (Tony) was born in St. Louis, MO and studied voice/opera at Washington University in St. Louis. This is the first full show that Jay has ever performed in. Jay is living in Jerusalem as a first-year cantorial student at HUC-JIR. In his free time, Jay also composes songs on piano and guitar. Jay wants to thank all his peeps for giving him love and support. Shira Potter (Teresa) is delighted to participate in her seventh Encore production. Recent roles include Young Buttercup (HMS Pinafore), Patty Simmcox (Grease) and Constance Snow (Carousel). She has taken courses for young professional actors in TV and Film in Vancouver and is hoping to attend the BIMA music and theater program at Brandeis University this summer.

Hallel Rabinowitz (Estella) is in 9th grade and is 14 years-old. She goes to school at Pelech in Jerusalem. She loves to dance, sing, and act. Hallel has studied both classical and modern ballet (this is her tenth year) and is enjoying all the dances in West Side Story very much! She has previously appeared in Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, Tender Offer, and Annie.


Amitai Rosenberg (Chino) is 17 and is majoring in Cinema and History. Amitai has participated in Encore’s previous shows: Fiddler on the Roof (Mendel the Rabbi’s son); Ruddigore (Sir Jasper Murgatroyd); Carousel (Enoch Snow Jr.), and Pinafore. Amitai is having a lot of fun with West Side Story and hopes everyone will enjoy the show! Marni Schamroth (Velma) made aliyah from Baltimore in 2001. She is 17 and studies at Tzvia Omanuyot, majoring in art. She has been dancing since she was 6 and has been singing for 3 years. Marni has appeared in Annie, Oliver Twist, and more. Marni hopes to become a professional artist and dancer when she’s older. Yael Serdtse (Clarice) Recently married to Yan, Yael has returned to Encore after completing her first degree in psychology. She has performed in shows such as Patience, Pinafore, Mikado, Ruddigore and Carousel, and is excited to be in a show that is more about dance than song. Yael is currently working as a voice teacher, and at the Feuerstein Institute. Michael Simkin (Pepe) is making his stage debut with West Side Story, after years of admiring musical theatre from afar. When not dancing the Mambo with his fellow Sharks, Michael can be found at the Hebrew University’s Department of Mathematics, where he is working on an MSc. Micha Tick (Toro) is in 11th grade at Orot Yehuda in Efrat. Micha is 17 years-old, and lives in Jerusalem. He worked back stage on Carousel and West Side Story is the first play he has acted in. Micha also plays pro football and soccer. Gal Tsabari (Francesca) is making her debut performance in Jerusalem after taking an 8-year hiatus from musical theater. Gal studies Psychobiology at Hebrew University, enjoys reading & playing her ukulele. Previous musical theater credits include Westside High School’s 2004 performance of Footloose and the award-winning ATSC Varsity Show Choir. Noga Yechieli (Anybodys), majored in theatre in High School where she directed Hair. She studied for 2 years in the Nurit Katzir Acting School, participating in The Trial by Kafka, and The Trojan War Will Not Take Place (Helen), performing in the Jerusalem Theatre Festival in March 2012. Major roles include The Sound of Music (Louise); Grease (Rizzo), and Les Misrables (Fantine).

PRODUCTION STAFF Robert Binder (Producer) is a project consultant in Jewish education and a founder of Encore! for whom he has directed The Mikado, The Wizard of Oz, The Keys to the City, The Yeomen of the Guard, Oklahoma!, The Pirates of Penzance, Fiddler on the Roof, Ruddigore, The Pianist, Carousel, H.M.S. Pinafore, and the forthcoming My Fair Lady. Rachel Inbar (Stage director) is a drama teacher, and a puppet and prop designer. Graduate of N.Y.U in Drama, and the Hebrew University in Sociology and Anthropology. She has been instructing and directing youth of various ages for many years, in theatrical workshops, and in many youth productions. Yaeli Greenblatt (Choreographer) is an independent artist in Jerusalem and co-founder of the Sardale Art Group. Her previous experience includes: Grease (choreographer); Carousel (Louise); Ruddigore (Bridesmaid); The Pirates of Penzance, & Fiddler on the Roof (Assistant Choreographer). Yaeli is a dance teacher and is working towards a MA in English Literature. Jeff Rosenschein (Musical Director) was Pianist/Conductor for the Israeli premiere of Rent, Music Director of 13, Grease and the The Last Five Years. Jeff is a Professor of Computer Science at Hebrew University, and cofounded two Jerusalem-based software companies. He is married to Shira, and father to Chana, Moshe, Yair, Margalit, and Elianna. Paul Salter (Musical Director) the founding musical director of Encore is a postgraduate of Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He Works as a solo pianist, accompanist, arranger, conductor, composer and teacher. He has appeared on BBC TV and Radio, conducted the Israel Chamber Orchestra and the National Festival Orchestra of Great Britain. Elinor Kaufman (Assistant Director) has acted in many productions in Jerusalem, including Grease, Oklahoma and Blood Brothers, but this is her first time working behind the scenes. She has enjoyed working with the entire cast and crew, and gives a big thank you to the lighting guy for supporting her in this venture & babysitting the newest addition to her family! Elianna Rosenschein (Stage Manager, Video promo, Props) In the past three years, Elianna has been involved in theater, both onstage and off. She has performed in three Encore choruses, and was PA for CST’s 13, Props for CST/Encore’s Grease, and Stage Manager for JEST’s Tenth Man. Outside rehearsals, Elianna studies at Midrashiyat Hartman and enjoys photography and musicals.
