How to Choose the Right Race Our Event Guide for 2016 is here! These pages are packed with every type of race you can imagine. We have traditional running and walking events, as well as trail races and multisport races, such as triathlons. We’ve also included adventure races and mud run events. Having a race on your calendar is great motivation to stay in shape. But you don’t want to pick the wrong event and have buyer’s remorse. So if you haven’t already signed up for a few races this year, how do you choose? Here are several factors to consider.

FIRST EVER Gluten Free Waffles and Protein Chews honeystinger.com

1. Distance. The right distance depends on a variety of factors: how much time you have to commit to training, your current level of fitness, what races are coming up in your area, and your budget. If you are setting your sights on a marathon six months down the road, you may sign up for a few key shorter races leading up to the marathon to gauge your fitness and see how your training is progressing. 2. Location. How far are you willing to travel? If you want to run one of the largest marathons in the nation, you may be planning a vacation around your goal race. A destination race can make for a memorable experience and a fun way to combine a family vacation. If you want to stay close to your own neighborhood, there are many advantages. One benefit will be that you can have a predictable pre-race routine and be able to sleep in your own bed before the event. You can also save lots of money on travel, lodging, and meal costs. 3. calendar. What season do you want to train or race in? While many runners train all year, some folks may take time off around the holidays before recommitting in the new year. Maybe you are planning a May event, and are going to run in several tune-up races leading up to the big day. Or maybe you have your sights set on a summer trail run in the high country. Check out your calendar and find out what fits best into your busy schedule. 4. Terrain. Do you want a race that is hilly or flat? Do you want an urban course or a scenic course in the mountains? If you want to run a personal record time, you want to seek out a course that is flat and fast. Many race websites offer course maps and elevation profiles, so you can check it out ahead of time. If beauty is high on your list of criteria, you may have to put up with hills and a high elevation as a trade off. 5. Size. Do you want to run in a race with thousands of other runners or just a few hundred? Races that are large can offer great amenities and a fun atmosphere, but the trade off can be course congestion and longer waits for amenities like bathrooms and packet pickup. Running in a smaller field may allow you to place higher in your age group; however, running in a bigger race may propel you to a better overall time with the increased competition. In the end, there are a lot of factors that go into which race you decide to run. There may be other considerations as well, such as where your friends are running, what the race’s reputation is like, what the shirt looks like, or whether the race offers a finisher’s medal. It’s a highly personal decision. But make sure you sign up! It is so motivating to have a race on the calendar. There are more events than ever in Colorado, so it’s easy to find one that fits your schedule and budget. You can also go online at www.coloradorunnermag.com to access the event listings and to find out more information about each race. As time goes on, some of these events will change their days or times, so double check their websites before you go. I hope you enjoy our event guide!

The women’s race saw Boulder’s Darcy Piceu and Amanda Basham finish ninth and tenth.

Suver Nabs National Title

AARON BRAUN OF ALAMOSA AND JEFFREY EGGLESTON OF BOULDER FINISH FIRST AND SECOND AT THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL SAN ANTONIO HALF MARATHON IN DECEMBER.

Rainsberger Wins Nike Cross Nationals On a typically drizzly winter Saturday in Portland, Oregon, top American high school runners gathered at the Glendoveer Golf Course for the 12th Annual Nike Cross Nationals on December 5. Sprinting off the starting line, the young athletes accelerated around the 3.1-mile course to meet the race’s 5K mark. Thousands of spectators cheered the tenacious participants, who had qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals at one of eight regional meets. Rain soaked, the runners dashed towards the finish line. Senior Katie Rainsberger from Colorado Springs, claimed her first individual title, with a time of 16:56. Casey Clinger of American Fork, Utah, took first place in the boys race, with a time of 15:03. Air Academy’s Rainsberger came into the race with an unbeaten season. She pulled away from the pack to form a solid lead and crossed the finish line in 16:56, 14 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Ella Donaghu. Following her senior year, the 5-foot-9 Rainsberger will attend the University of Oregon. She was later awarded the title of Gatorade Girls Country Runner of the Year, and had this to say about her running. Gatorade: What one piece of advice do you have for freshman about being a successful high school student athlete? Katie Rainsberger: I would tell freshman to keep everything enjoyable and to be patient. Success doesn’t happen over night but, instead, through layers of consistent, positive training. Working hard and having fun are the keys that will lead to the greatest enjoyment and longevity. 8 coloradorunnermag.com

G: What training habit has the most impact on your performance? KR: The most important training habit for me isn’t a single workout or drill, but rather, a collective series of solid, consistent training blocks that allow my confidence to build. Of course drills, plyometrics, yoga, and strength training are all a part of my routine, but by having consistent training, and staying injury free, I have seen the most improvement and success. G: What have you learned from your coach that you will never forget? KR: My coach has always been one of my greatest supporters. Through good races and bad ones, great workouts and injuries, he has always taught me that to be a great runner, you have to be a better person. At the end of the day, you will only go as far as your character will allow, so he always has me focus on the positive of each race or day as an experience to be put in the books.

Miller and Kimmel Win North Face 50 Mile Barr Camp‘s Zach Miller and Silverton’s Megan Kimmel won big at The North Face 50 Mile in San Francisco on December 5. Finishing in 6:12 and 7:13, the pair each earned $10,000 first-place prizes. Held annually since 2007, the race has always attracted a who’s who of ultrarunners, all vying for a share of the $30,000 prize purse. Kimmel was surprised to find herself alone in front so early in the race. “I had no intention of being in the lead, but then seven miles in I just found myself there,” Kimmel said. “Interestingly enough, my confidence

It was a day of firsts at the USATF Cross Country Championships on February 6 in Bend, Oregon, as Mattie Suver of Colorado Springs won her first national title, taking home top prize in the women’s senior race. The women’s race got off to a conservative start, as a pack of four women clearly established themselves amongst the field by the first mile. It wasn’t until halfway through the fourth lap of the five-lap race when Suver started to pull away. Suver, arms raised, claimed first place in 36:38 over the incredibly challenging course. Maggie Callahan of Boulder placed ninth. While the women’s race was moderate in the early stages of the race, the men’s race started out extremely fast thanks to Max King. King shot to the lead in the first half mile of the race, bounding up hills and around turns, eventually owning nearly a ten second lead on the chase pack of eight that followed behind. Adams State runner Tabor Stevens worked hard to maintain contact with the front, and ultimately finished third. Craig Lutz claimed his first national title in 31:40 and King faded to fifth. Former University of Colorado teammates Joe Bosshard and Andy Wacker finished sixth and seventh in 32:26 and 32:27.

Colorado Men and Women 2nd at NCAAs Syracuse edged two-time defending champion Colorado by just nine points to win their first team title at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in 64 years. On the women’s side, the number one-ranked Lobos of the University of New Mexico dominated their race, also winning their first team title over second place Colorado. The individual titles were won convincingly by Oregon’s Edward Cheserek, who became the first man ever to win three in a row, and Notre Dame’s Molly Seidel, who became the first ever women’s champion for the Fighting Irish. Ranked first in the USTFCCCA polls all year long, Colorado had been the favorite. Pierce Murphy finished third overall in 29 minutes, 37 seconds on the 10K course. Morgan Pearson was 25th (20th), freshman John Dressel was 26th (21st), junior Ben Saarel was 31st (23rd) and senior Connor Winter was 33rd (25th).

Colorado Runners Claim USATF Masters Grand Prix Photography By VICTOR SAILER / PHOTORUN.NET

The Boulder Road Runners (BRR) Men’s 60+ Division team clinched the 2015 USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters Grand Prix National Championship race series at their final race of the year, the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in San Francisco, California’s Golden Gate Park on December 12. Their successful year began with age group team gold and silver medals at the USATF Masters National Cross Country Championships at Boulder’s Flatirons Golf Course in February. This was followed by team gold medal finishes at USATF national championship series events in Syracuse, NY (5K Road); Tulsa, OK (15K Road); and Alexandria, VA (12K Road) later in the year. At the San Francisco race, the team had to endure the last minute loss of Greeley’s Doug Bell, a top national age group runner and one of the team’s best performers, due to

a quadriceps injury. The team still managed a fourth place finish in a field of 36 teams and 158 individual age group competitors. The 4-man Colorado team comprised of Devin Croft (Littleton), Heath Hibbard (Montrose), Bruce Kirschner (Louisville) and John Victoria (Colorado Springs) successfully held off all competing teams to clinch the 2015 USATF Masters Club Grand Prix National Championship win for the BRR. The Grand Prix win will add $1,000 in prize money to BRR coffers in addition to the winnings from age group gold medals earlier in the year. The Men 60+ 8-kilometer classic cross country course in Golden Gate Park consisted of several loops on grass and hard packed dirt around the park’s Polo Field, which were seriously muddied after several days of hard rain. In addition to the mud and occasional large, deep puddles, there were numerous changes of surface from wet grass, bridle path, gravel, packed trail and sand and included a number of short uphill and downhill segments throughout. Victoria, who was in third place the entire race before being hobbled by a hamstring cramp in the last 500 meters, landed in 7th place in 30:48. Hibbard placed 15th in 31:51. Croft and Kirschner finished in 34th and 42nd place, respectively. -Bruce Kirschner

Grey and Thweatt 2nd at Club Cross Country Nationals The USATF Club Cross Country National Championships were nothing short of stunning, with an idyllic backdrop and stacked fields in every race as national championship contenders took to Golden Gate Park to see who reigned supreme. Amy Van Alstine ran a tight race alongside defending individual champion Laura Thweatt and Rochelle Kanuho, keeping things neck-and-neck over the last three-quarter mile after splitting 9:51. The trio barrelled to the finish, but Van Alstine surged over the final 200 meters to edge Thweatt by a second, 19:51-19:52. Kanuho was right on their heels, crossing in 19:53. In the team race, the Boston Athletic Association defended their women’s team title with an exceptional 28-point performance courtesy of three top-10 finishes from Emma Bates, Sarah Pagano and three-time Olympian Jen Rhines. On the men’s side, Garrett Heath continued to prove his dominance on the cross country circuit, taking the men’s individual title in 29:06. Heath battled with Boulder Track Club’s Jonathan Grey, who finished just behind in 29:10. The third place team was Boulder Track Club (127 points).

Training Groups Merge

BOULDER’S LAURA THWEATT LEADS THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON. THWEATT WOULD FINISH AS THE TOP AMERICAN IN SEVENTH IN 2:28:23.

Boulder-based running, triathlon and fitness company FastForward Sports (F4) has joined forces with fellow running group Revolution Running. Both companies are strategically aligning and share a culture of group fitness and wellness. The merge will have the biggest impact on the runners themselves due

to a larger group of participating athletes. This will increase the chances of having some running “mates” to share the workout experiences with. “Merging with Rev Run was a natural next step for us,” says F4 owner Tim O’Brien. “Uniting will bring even more camaraderie to our already great running community here in Boulder.” Revolution Running has a vibrant and active community of over 500+ runners annually. Both companies have been running parallel programs for the past few years. All programs will now run through Revolution Running.

Other News... At the Houston Marathon held on January 17, Sage Canaday of Boulder ran 2:20:32, Steve Chu of Colorado Springs ran 2:23:26, Matt Hensley of Boulder ran 2:23:56, and Matt Dewald of Denver ran 2:26:07. While the Colorado men missed the Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying benchmark, Amanda Scott of Boulder did make it with a 2:44:10 run. At the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon on January 17 in Tempe, Arizona, Monica Folts of Lakewood ran 2:52:29 to finish ninth. Brian Folts and Andrew Simmons were sixth and seventh in 2:40:34 and 2:40:52 for the men. Zoila Gomez of Alamosa gave the Olympic Trials qualifier another go, but just missed with a 1:16:30 finish in the half marathon. Adams State alum Aaron Braun was fifth in the men’s half in 1:03:41. Former Boulder runner Fernando Cabada won the Carlsbad Marathon in California in 2:18:14. Just a month out from the Olympic marathon trials, the race timing is interesting. Mario Macias of Boulder was fourth in 2:26:15. Kara Lubieniecki of Boulder ran 1:19:22 for sixth in the women’s half marathon. Scott Fauble, who competed at Wheat Ridge High School and graduated in 2010, was third in the Great Edinburgh Cross Country race, an international-class event in the UK. He finished the race in 25:38, just seven seconds behind second-place Mo Farah. Alex Monroe of the Boulder Track Club was tenth in 25:57. In the women’s 6K, Matt Suver of Colorado Springs was tenth in 21:53. Cassie Scallon of Boulder destroyed the record books and the competition at the Bandera 100K in Texas on January 10. The race was both the USATF 100K trail championship and a Golden Ticket Race with a prized automatic entry to the Western States 100. Scallon, a registered nurse and repeat winner, ran 9:19 on the two-lap Texas hill country course. Michele Yates was third in 9:45 on the hilly, rocky course.

FRUITS AND VEG DO YOU EAT TOO

Feeling ashamed and embarrassed, many runners “confess” they eat too few fruits and vegetables. They totally understand that fruits and veggies are good for their health and better than vitamin pills, but they can’t figure out how to enjoy them more often — or how to get inspired to learn to like them. Sound familiar? Maybe this article will help you boost your intake of these healthful sports foods. I know I should eat more fruit for snacks, but I just don’t…

When hunger strikes, a piece of fruit is unlikely to be your snack of first choice because it is not very hearty. That is, calorie-dense apple pie 10 coloradorunnermag.com

with ice cream can easily be far more appealing than just an apple. One solution: plan to make the snack heartier by pairing fruit with protein. For example, enjoy an apple (or grapes) with cheese; smear a banana with peanut butter; or combine raisins with nuts. Would that boost the snack-appeal?

How many fruits/veggies are enough?

Ideally, you should eat a fruit or vegetable at each meal. If you don't/ won’t/can’t do that, at least eat a pile of veggies with dinner to compensate for no produce at the other meals. You could also create a loaded smoothie at breakfast that has enough fruit (and veg) for the whole day. Other suggestions include: Breakfast: large banana on cereal; lots of berries in yogurt; tall glass of orange juice Lunch: extra tomato and spinach in a wrap; big bowl of fruit salad; large apple (with cheese) for dessert Snacks: tart cherry, grape or blueberry juice; banana (with peanut butter);

GGIES: O FEW? dates; dried pineapple; V-8 juice Dinner: Pre-dinner, munchies: baby carrots (with hummus), cherry tomatoes; At dinner: big pile of cooked veggies; extra-large side salad.

The more you eat, the more nutrients you get.

Eight ounces of orange juice offers all the vitamin C you need for the day. So does one stalk of cooked broccoli and half a green pepper. Could you consume a taller glass of OJ, a bigger pile of broccoli, or munch on a whole pepper (like you’d eat an apple)? You’d consume double the vitamin C — plus electrolytes and many other health-boosting compounds.

What if I don’t like kale…?

Although kale is nutrient–rich, it is not the only green vegetable with health-value. Here’s how some green veggies compare, based on a 50-calorie cooked portion. (Note: “%” = % of the amount you should consume each day): Vegetable 50 calories

Can I eat too many fruits and vegetables?

Doubtful, unless you eat them to the exclusion of other foods. For example: • If your dinner is just rice with stir-fried veggies (no tofu, chicken, or protein-rich food), the meal lacks adequate protein to build and repair muscles. Solution: Either add a protein, include a glass of milk with the meal, or enjoy Greek yogurt for dessert. • If you follow a Paleo-type diet and eat just protein and veggies for meals (no grain), your meal could easily lack adequate carbs to refuel from hard exercise. Solution: include starchy root vegetables, such as carrots and beets. • If you are a vegetarian and prepare pasta with just tomato sauce (no meatballs), the meal lacks protein. Solution: choose protein-enriched pasta, and add a salad with beans, nuts, and cheese. • If you are dieting without success, you might be consuming more calories than you realize from yet-another handful of grapes. That (large) apple might have 150 calories, as does the bag of baby carrots. While the calories are healthful and preferable to cookies, they still count. Fruits and veggies tend to be “guilt-free” but they are not totally “calorie-free.” Sports nutritionist Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD is the author of the Sports Nutrition Guidebook, and food guides for marathoners, cyclists and soccer players. These books, as well as teaching materials, are available at www. nancyclarkrd.com. For online and live workshops, visit NutritionSportsExerciseCEUs.com.

Don't like many veggies?

Because fruits and vegetables offer similar nutrients, you can swap one for the other. That is, if you don't enjoy red tomatoes, at least try to have red strawberries, red apples or red peppers. In general, you want to consume a variety of colors of fruits and/or veggies—and enjoy a rainbow of health: RED strawberries, apples, watermelon, tomato ORANGE oranges, mango, papaya, sweet potato YELLOW pineapple, peaches, summer squash BLUE/PURPLE blueberry, plums, eggplant, purple grapes GREEN kiwi, honeydew melon, green grapes, broccoli, spinach, kale, peppers WHITE banana, onion, potato, cauliflower

But they rot…

Many runners live alone, rarely cook, and get tired of wasting money tossing out rotten produce. If that’s your case, some solutions include: • Buy bags of frozen vegetables and fruits (freezing retains the nutrients); even canned ones are nourishing. • Buy the desired portion of greens and other salad (or stir-fry) ingredients at the salad bar. Instead of buying a whole head of lettuce, of which half might end up rotting in your refrigerator, buy just what you need. • Cook enough veggies for several days. For example, bake several sweet potatoes at once, or make a big pot of ratatouille with eggplant, tomatoes, coloradorunnermag.com 11

RUNNERS OF THE YEAR The winners of the Colorado Runner Racing Series competed among 16 different races, ranging in distance from a 5K to a half marathon. The series started in January and concluded in late September. The winners led 12 age categories to claim $4,800 in prize money, donated by the Avery Brewing Company. The second and third place runners received gift certificates from Runners Roost. then up to Cheeseman park (two laps), and back down to the Cherry Creek bike path. Then just before getting back to our apartment there was a small park called Cook Park where I would make one lap just before finishing up the loop.

Amanda Lee, 26, of Boulder, is the winner of

the women’s open division of the Colorado Runner Racing Series. She is working toward a master of social work degree and says, “We lost my mom to breast cancer in 2014, and I want to work for either an oncology center or hospice program to help patients and their families.” What was most memorable about your year? Finally making it to the starting line (and then finish!) of my first marathon in April was huge for me. Wisdom tooth surgery followed by a partially torn Achilles tendon made me cancel two attempts in 2014. I’ll also never forget my races at the U.S. Mountain Running Championship and U.S. Trail Marathon Championship. Both races required everything I had. It was a joy to be able to fight and finish knowing I couldn’t have given any more than I did.

UCCS Mountain Lions, placed 11th overall. What keeps you motivated? Racing. Racing keeps me motivated. I love to race and push myself to see what I can do.

What is a typical week of training like? Most weekdays are the same. Up at 4 a.m. to be out the door by 5 a.m. and to work by 7. Weeks usually consist of 2-3 workout days, a long run Sunday, and 3-4 easy runs.

What are the keys to your success? Consistency and accountability. You’ve got to be willing to get out there everyday and put in the work. The hardest part about running is getting out the door.

What are some of the highlights of your career? The Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in Washington D.C. in 2012 where I was able to pull off a huge PR in 51:17. The countless trips to Club Cross with the BRC/adidas race team where the experiences were more often than not the highlight, not so much the race! A trip to Evansville, IN for the 2004 NCAA Division II Cross County Championships, where we, the

Do you have a favorite place to run? Colorado is the best place to train; there are just too many places to list. I enjoy running the Highline, Waterton Canyon, and at Chatfield now that we live in Littleton. Back when we lived in south Denver, I had a loop I liked to call the three-park special with extra cheese. I would run from our little apartment along Evans Avenue, over to Washington Park

What are the highlights of your career? My first real trail race was the 10K at the 2014 GoPro Mountain Games in Vail. I was trying something new because I was tired of being injured on the track and road, and I really had no idea what to expect. From that first run (in tears!) up a black diamond ski slope, I was hooked. Afterward, I told my boyfriend Alex, “that was crazy, stupid hard... And I can’t wait to do it again!” What is a typical week of training like for you? My week is structured a lot like most distance runners - one long run, one threshold workout, one speed workout, and I fill in the other days with easy runs. Some days I’ll do an easy second run. I usually run 70-85 miles per week and try to do as much of it on trails as possible. Recently, to try to break my long cycle of injuries, I’ve started working with a strength coach twice per week, and I swim quite a bit as well (on my own and with masters swim classes). What keeps you motivated? My mom’s strength, grace, and courage in fighting cancer for four years provided an excellent example and motivation for me. Now, when I hit rough patches in races, I just think of her and try to channel her wonderful spirit. Photography courtesy of JAY LUNA AND AMANDA LEE

TODD STRAKA

Is there anything else we would want to know? I’m a crazy cat lady. I honestly never meant for it to happen. I absolutely hated cats. I really wanted a furry friend, but my apartment in Flagstaff didn’t allow dogs. I thought, “I guess a cat can’t be so bad” and I adopted Chase. Four years later, I’ve become one of those people who turns down invitations to do things because, “I have plans with my cat.”

Todd Straka, 48, of Boulder is the winner

of the masters category. He is a user experience designer, the father of two teenagers, and he recently published the first ever Boulder Running Journal, a celebration of all things running in Boulder in 2015. What was most memorable about your year? I was really focused on the mile race this year, as it was my primary goal. I had a great time talking with other milers and coaches, learning about, then running their favorite workouts. The season culminated with the Pearl Street Mile and a week later I traveled to Michigan to compete in the Masters Road Mile Championships. Being able to join the Boulder Track Club for many of their twice weekly workouts pushed me to a new level by the end of summer. Do you have any running tips to share? Patience, enjoy the journey and don’t be afraid to stop along the way to take photos to celebrate those moments later. Last year I think I did a better job than usual of taking extra time to recover. Using the recovery tools like the R8 from Roll Recovery, getting in good nutrients, a morning shake each morning from the Skoop, and I continued working on dynamic exercises and mobility. As a master’s runner it’s important to keep up with those 14 coloradorunnermag.com

to stave off injury, actually it’s really important for runners of all ages. What is a week of training like for you? Right now, I am just trying to get out and run, maybe a shorter hill workout now and again. Last year with the mile training being more intense, I incorporated two hard days on the track with a little longer run on the weekend. All other days and miles were really easy so I could recover. I think my deepest week was only 45 miles. What keeps you motivated? Setting a goal in a new distance kept me pretty focused. Then realizing that I may be able to be competitive in that distance on a national level kept me working hard. Other than that, people’s photos on Instagram actually motivates me to get out to explore new areas.

Stella heffron, 48, is the winner of the masters division. She lives in Aurora, is newly engaged, and works as an accountant.

What are some of the highlights of your career? The biggest highlights of my running career usually involve something that makes a lasting memory. For example, one such highlight was running as a member of the Runner’s Roost women’s team for the USATF National Cross Country meet in Boulder last year. We finished third in the Master’s team division for the women. This is something that I will always remember and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of a great team with a group of awesome runners. Do you have any secrets of success? Any secrets for success that I have are pretty common and obvious but still can’t be

stressed enough. To cut down on injuries, you need to take the time to foam roll, stretch, and do core work or strength training most days, usually about four or five days a week. If there is a major race that you are training for, such as a marathon or half marathon, and you are self-coached, it is best to write out a training plan so that you have your training mapped out for your goal race. Do you have a favorite place to run? One of my favorite places to train is at the Bluffs in Lone Tree. Any run I want to do in that area is not limited to just that park since the East-West trail system has been expanded. It’s a good place to go for a nice hilly run on the dirt paths and there are plenty of challenging routes to allow for a long run or something shorter. I also have a few favorite places for training in the mountains for high altitude options. Some of these places include Vail Mountain, the Vail Pass bike path between Vail and Frisco, and Oh My Gawd Road out of Idaho Springs. What keeps you motivated? I find that the best way for me stay motivated is to set a couple of main goals each year as well as a few smaller goals to help reach my main goals and then set up a training plan geared towards reaching these goals.

Bob VanLangenhoven, 53, of Fort Col-

lins is the winner of the 50-54 age category. He is married and works at Colorado State University in the Information Systems department. What was most memorable in 2015? My most memorable running moment for 2015 was winning a marathon. I ran the Buckeye Marathon in mid-December on a perfect weather day in Arizona. I took the lead

TH E FAST L AN E pulling for each other. And when you think you cannot do any more, then you do another interval. I also love the beauty, solitude, and peace of running the country roads around my neighborhood.

Dan Spale, 59, of Lakewood is the winner

of the men’s 55-59 age group. He’s married with three children. What are some of the highlights of your career? My first marathon was big with big goals of breaking three hours on a hot day... that did not happen. Taking on Kelsey Martin as a coach. I remember my first race under her “regime,” the Colfax Half Marathon and she was there at mile 11 for a ‘gentle nudge of encouragement.’ When I finished, I texted her, “I can’t believe that training plan got me a new PR.” She eventually got me to where my name is the age group state record for the half marathon - her name should be there as well. Also, running a 4:54 mile at age 56. Do you have a favorite place to run? Green Mountain, Red Rocks, and Bear Creek Lake Park, but really, for me, any track is my favorite.

SUSAN BABCOCK

at mile 23 and cruised on to victory in a time of 2:56:56. How long have you been running? My running career spans 38 years. I have logged over 52,000 miles and run hundreds and hundreds of races. What stands out most are my marathons. I have run a total of 24 marathons, 14 of those under three hours, and four under 2:50, including a 2:49 at age 50. Another highlight is winning the Colorado Runner Racing Series for my second time. What are your 2016 goals? I just want to keep healthy, train hard, and run quality races. But most important to me is to try to continue to break three hours in the marathon. At over 35 years, I am currently ranked in the top 20 in the world for the longest duration between first and last sub-3:00 marathons. The following website keeps track of this stat: www. arrs.net/TR_SSpan.htm. What are the secrets to your success? Secrets to success? Hard training mixed with the right amount of rest. I think you need to find the right balance to really be successful. Plus, I avoid cement bike paths, especially on long runs. It just beats up the body too much. Do you have a favorite place to run? I have several wonderful places that I like to do my long runs, either Redstone Canyon or the roads east of Budweiser brewery. Redstone is amazingly scenic with plenty of challenging hills. If that course doesn’t get you ready for racing, nothing will. The are plenty of gravel roads east of Bud that I enjoy running. There’s very little traffic and it’s extremely peaceful. 16 coloradorunnermag.com

Susan Babcock, 53, of Sedalia is the win-

ner of the women’s 50-54 age group. She works as a software engineer and is married with a son and daughter-in-law. What are some of the highlights of your career? I have been an off and on runner most of my life, a typical recreational runner. But, I have done the 12 mile Creede Mountain Run eight times. It is a small race in an obscure town at altitude with a very steep incline the first several miles. I considered it a race against myself that was always a reminder to get back at it. My 2015 time was a 20 year personal best. What are your long term goals? Continual improvement, even at my age. In the last three years, I have improved my half marathon time by 18 minutes. I ran my last Bolder Boulder ten years ago on a whim with no training (brutal, it hurt). In 2016, my goal is to run the BB and be in the top ten of my age group. Do you have any secrets to your success? Revolution Running training club stresses consistency. Consistent training has given me improved running performance and minimized injury risk. What is a week of training like for you? My training week includes a hill or track interval workout, a tempo run, and a long run; with easy running or cross training in between. It also includes a day or two of rest. Do you have any favorite places to train? I enjoy a group interval workout on a track. There is nothing like a group pushing and

What keeps you motivated? I have a very competitive nature and I always think what I can do better. Because most assuredly the competition is. I enjoy when tough competition in my age group toes the line with me. You win some and you lose some. You learn the most by losing. What was most memorable this year? Running a 5:17 mile last February at the Air Force Academy. A 5:06 at the Pearl Street Mile. Going to San Fransico and racing in a Club Nationals Cross Country meet, and running two half marathons side by side with my coach Kelsey.

Delcia Litt, 57, of Erie is the winner of the 55-59 age category for women. She is married, and says, “I thank God for giving me my running legs and my husband for supporting my passion all these years. By the way, he’s a swimmer.”

How long have you been running? I am often asked how long I have been running, and why nobody has heard of me before. Maybe it’s because I lived in the mountains for 14 years. I believe my first actual race was the 1989 Cherry Creek Sneak 26 years ago. I remember how unprepared I was because I forgot my running shoes and borrowed a pair. I never did that again. What type of training do you do? Regarding my training, I had always trained myself until I met Rick and Laura Bruess in 2014. Prior to joining “Athletics Boulder” running club, I followed a routine of one hill session, one tempo run, and one long run while cross training with weights and yoga each week. I only ran every other day and rarely got injured. My training is a bit stricter now. I average 30 miles a week and prefer running easy trails for my long runs like Button Rock in Lyons or Eagle Trail near Boulder Reservoir. Lately, I enjoy going to

the track for speed work. What did you enjoy most this year? My most challenging race last year was the Garden of the Gods 10 miler. I was able to beat the age group course record, coincidentally set by myself in 2014, with a time of 1:12:23. My all time favorite local race is the Bolder Boulder, having run it off and on for over 20 years. I set a personal record in 2015 with 40:56. The Evergreen Town Race turned out to be a faster 10K time of 39:43. In December, I traveled to San Francisco to compete in the USATFXC Club National Championships with Athletics Boulder. Competing against the fastest masters women in the country was intimidating, exhilarating and great fun. Our team won and I received a third place age division award. Do you follow a special diet? In 2010, when I moved back to the Front Range, I started to transition my diet into mostly raw, plant-based and organic. I eliminated dairy, red meat, fish, and alcohol, ok, not completely. I dropped 10 pounds that year. I love my green smoothies for breakfast and a salad for lunch. Eating whole foods seemed right for me. Besides, why eat animals when there are so many other healthy things to eat. It’s better for our bodies and better for our planet. This was a game changer for me. I started feeling great and winning races and have gotten faster since then.

Bruce Kirschner, 62, of Louisville is

the winner of the men’s 60-64 age group. He is a retired U.S. Government training director and recently formed his own leadership training company. He has been married for 37 years and has three adult sons.

BRUCE KIRSCHNER

What was most memorable this year? It was the first time I won any kind of national championship. I was top age group finisher at the Road Runners Club of America’s 10 Mile National Championship at the Presidio 10 Miler in San Francisco in April. I was also on the Boulder Road Runners Men’s 60-69 gold medal winning teams at the USA Track & Field Cross Country National Championship in Boulder and the USATF 15K National Championship in Tulsa. But those wins were really just a testament to my national and world class teammates. I’m the laggard on the team. Do you have any secrets to your success? I believe consistency in training nearly every day is key. I also believe having a good mileage base at any speed is important. The more miles you pile on gradually over time, the faster you’ll be. I also keep my weight as low as safely possible. You pay for every single extra pound you don’t really need in a race of any distance. I also dedicate my major races to close family members that have already passed on. I’ll take one of them along on my left shoulder and their presence gives me strength when I really need it in a race. Do you have any recommended resources? I’m a voracious reader of books on how to train to be the best competitive runner. The books I would most recommend are Road To The Top by Coach Joe Vigil and Run Faster From The 5K To The Marathon: How To Be Your Own Best Coach by Brad Hudson. Fast After 50: How to Race Strong For The Rest Of Your Life by Joe Friel is a good resource for masters athletes. Where do you draw inspiration from? coloradorunnermag.com 17

AMY LEASE

My fellow competitive masters runners and bike racers. For example, Greeley’s Doug Bell was my principal competition in the 2015 Colorado Runner Racing Series. Although he’s three years older than me, I could never pass him in a head-to-head race. He’s a world class athlete and has continued to stay at the top of his game for many years. The only reason I won the series this year was because an injury kept him from participating in many of the races. He’s one of my running heroes and it is an honor and a privilege to be on the same Boulder Road Runner team with him and my other teammates. What is your biggest challenge? Staying flexible as I continue to age. It has probably been the primary reason for my running injuries over the years. Fortunately, injuries are relatively infrequent. I never used to stretch at all, but now I do it every day. It is a constant battle to remain flexible and injury free.

Amy Lease, 62, of Denver is the winner of

the 60-64 age category of the Colorado Runner Racing Series. She is a coach for Revolution Running and also works in the cable/telecom industry. What is a typical week of training like for you? During spring and summer, I run six days a week. My training alternates between hills and intervals on Tuesday and tempo/pickup runs on Thursday. Saturday is always long run day. Sunday varies based on what happened on the Saturday long run. Monday and Wednesday are short to mid distance easy runs. In late fall and winter, I usually do four to five runs a week, and try to get back to some core work, like Pilates, one day a week. The Tuesday and Thursday workouts are still the hard workouts, but more to maintain fitness than to pound the intensity. Long runs generally won’t be as long, except for this year’s buildup for Boston. What are your upcoming goals? 18 coloradorunnermag.com

LINK LUBKEN

Boston Marathon - 4/18/2016 and Bolder Boulder 2016. I have a family tradition of running Bolder Boulder (27 years for me). I want to run all year, enjoy running and stay healthy! Do you have any secrets of your success? Training is not just running! You have to take care of your health, your diet, your hydration, recovery, and get enough sleep. Not paying attention to the whole picture will affect your running and racing. My best advice is to ask questions of people who are successful competitors. I am always learning about better training ideas by discussing running with other runners. The best idea that I learned this year is that easy runs mean EASY. As in, back off the pace, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the friends you are running with - EASY. What is your biggest challenge? The face in the mirror. Your biggest competitor is in your own head. You have to learn how to handle both the mental and physical challenges in running and racing.

Link Lubken, 66, of Denver is the winner

of the 65 and up category. He says, “I have been racing for 40 years. My first race was the 1975 Denver YMCA Mount Evans Trophy Run. I ran in a pair of tennis shoes I bought out of the bargain bin at Woolworth’s for a $1.69. There were 154 male finishers, and no women! Women were not allowed to compete back then.” What is your favorite race? Tulsa Run 15K in Tulsa, OK, Canyonlands Half Marathon in Moab, UT, Rocky Mountain Road Runners Trophy Series, Colorado Masters Running Association Series, and the Colorado Runner Racing Series. What did you enjoy most about this year? Even though I did not run as fast this year, or as many races as I have in the past couple years, I accomplished my goal. That was to win

MARILYN STAPLETON

the Colorado Runner Racing Series 65+ age group. I want to acknowledge Rich Martinez, last year’s winner. We raced head to head four times this year, and he beat me soundly each time. If not for a very serious medical situation in his family that limited his participation, he could have repeated as series winner again this year. What is your biggest challenge? Keeping myself motivated, and dealing with the limitations of an aging body. What’s the highlight of your running career? My best year racing ever was 2011, 41 races total, which included 11 of the 12 Rocky Mountain Road Runners Trophy Series Races. I won the trophy series, and at age 62, was 3the oldest person to win the trophy series in the 56 year history of the club.

Marilyn Stapleton, 68, of Greeley is

the winner of the 65 and up category. She says, “I want to thank Colorado Runner, Avery Brewing, and Runners Roost for their years of support for the Running Series. It has encouraged not only greatcompetition, but friendships and a chance to experience a variety of races.” What is your favorite race? Some of my favorite races this year were the Colorado 10 Classic because of the fantastic course, the Phantom 5K in Loveland and the Super Hero 5K in Greeley. These two races demonstrate volunteerism and event management at its best. I also enjoyed the Bacon Strip 4/10 mile race on the country roads of northern Colorado. It was started many years ago by Jane Welzel and continued since her passing. What else would we be interested to know? February will mark 28 years for me being a runner. I clearly remember when and where I took the first steps. What started as a challenge to run the Bolder Boulder turned into a fantastic life changing experience. KAISER PERMANENTE COLFAX MARATHON

The Colfax Marathon is Denver’s signature spring running weekend and provides the Ultimate Urban Tour of Denver. This is Denver’s only marathon with 26.2 epic miles of the best landmarks: through Sports Authority Field - home of the Broncos, along 7 miles of rivers, lakes and bridges, downtown and on America’s longest Main Street - Colfax Avenue. The Half Marathon is fast, flat and fun, with a one–mile trek through Denver Zoo and through a firestation. Or, choose the Marathon Relay or Urban 10 Miler. 2 Days, 7 Races, and a great After Party.

Gallagher Wins Valentine’s Day 5K

The weather could not have been better for the Valentine’s Day 5K at Washington Park on February 14. Sunshine abound and very little wind provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate the day of love with a flat and fast 5K and warm post-race party. Sunday’s event marked the fourth race in the RunDenver Series, providing

participants with free photos with cupid, a “Spin the Bottle” and “Kissing Booth,” finisher prizes, costume contest and Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe’s post-race food. More than 500 runners and walkers took to the streets of Denver, many taking advantage of the spring-like Colorado day, wearing shorts and t-shirts. The pristine weather also led to some very fast times. The top three male finishers all crossed the line under 17 minutes, with 36year old Kevin Gallagher setting the pace and grabbing the win in 16:23. Joe Marchand was second in 16:48, and 31-year old Yevjeniy Vinogradskiy rounded out the top three in 16:57. The women’s race was also close, but 29-year old Nicole Lair of Billings, Montana

took top honors in 19:43. Coming in second was 27-year old Kristin Jenkins in 20:15, with Kerry Hutcheson crossing the line in third in 20:23. Chilly temperatures greeted hundreds of participants for the second installment of the Winter Distance Series, the Frosty’s Frozen Five and Ten Mile Races. Hosted by Colorado Runner, both races start and finish at Hudson Gardens in Littleton and run along the paved Platte River trail. The course is flat and fast, and with a plethora of awards, as well as a stocked post-race party. The event continuously attracts some of Colorado’s top talent. The men’s 10 mile and 5 mile were dominated by 36-year old Paul Petersen of Fort Collins. Petersen crossed the finish line of the 10 mile almost four minutes faster than second place in 55:34. Rupp Victorious in Debut, Cragg Runs for Redemption at U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Battling a stacked field and warm temperatures, Galen Rupp (Portland, Oregon) was impressive in winning his marathon debut, while 2012 Olympian Amy Cragg (Leavenworth, Kansas) found redemption at the finish after her fourth place finish in 2012. Rupp and Cragg were victorious at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon, crossing in 2:11:12 and 2:28:20, respectively. In total, six athletes will be nominated for the U.S. Olympic Team: Rupp, Meb Keflezighi (San Diego, California) and Jared Ward (Provo, Utah) on the men’s side, and Cragg, Desiree Linden (Chula Vista, California) and Shalane Flanagan (Marblehead, Massachusetts) from the women’s field. Rupp was one of 52 first-time marathoners toeing the line on Saturday, as 361 athletes total started the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon. Rupp hung towards the back of the pack in the early going, letting Nick Arciniaga (Fountain Valley, California) take the lead in the first 5K. Fernando Cabada, formerly of Boulder, took over the reins from Arciniaga, leading the men’s pack of 20 athletes through mile 4 before Tyler McCandless (Boulder, Colorado) made a bold move at mile 5 and led for the next two miles. The men stayed as a pack through much of the race, with many athletes exchanging the lead until Western State alum Tyler Pennel made a huge move at 25K to break open the race, bringing Tim Ritchie (Brighton, Massachusetts), Rupp and Keflezighi with him. The latter three broke away a mile following Pennel’s surge and stayed together until mile 18, where Rupp and Keflezighi made a surge of their own to create space for the marathon rookie and veteran. Rupp and Keflezighi seemed to challenge one another to lead with both men jockeying for position over the next few miles. As the duo came through their final lap through the USC campus, Rupp threw down the hammer to break away from the 2004 Olympic silver medalist. As Rupp came through the final mile,

he stayed focused on the finish and waiting to celebrate until he pumped his fist crossing the line in 2:11:12. Rupp became the first American to make an Olympic marathon team in his marathon debut since 1968 (George Young). Keflezighi finished in 2:12:20, and will become the oldest U.S. Olympic runner in history when Team USA competes in Rio in August. With some jockeying for third, Ward overtook Pennel and then Puskedra as he surged on the final lap, earning the final spot on his first U.S. Olympic Team with his third-place finish of 2:13:00. Augustus Maiyo (Colorado Springs) and Ben Payne (Colorado Springs) had nice races with 2:18:33 and 2:18:37 finishes. Andrew Epperson (Northglenn) and Jon Grey (Boulder) ran 2:22:20 and 2:24:09. Other Colorado runners in the mix included: • Paul Petersen (Fort Collins) – 2:27:24 • Ben Zywicki (Louisville) – 2:28:01 • Matt Daniels (Evergreen) – 2:28:13 • Andrew Lesser (Colorado Springs) – 2:29:04 • Justin Young (Louisville) – 2:29:15 • Carlos Trujillo (Colorado Springs) – 2:29:24 • Pat Rizzo (Colorado Springs) – 2:30:43 • Gabe Proctor (Ex-Western) – 2:31:09 • Joe Gray (Colorado Springs) – 2:31:20 • Sean Brown (Aurora) – 2:32:56 • Jordan Kyle (Ex-CU) – 2:38:20 • Josh Eberly (Gunnison) – 2:2:50:15 • Brandon Birdsong (Alamosa) – 2:53:28 The women’s pack stayed intact until mile 9, where Kellyn Taylor (Flagstaff, Arizona), Sara Hall (Redding, California), Cragg and Flanagan broke away from the pack. The quad stayed together through USC’s campus before Cragg and Flanagan made their move at mile 10 to break away from Taylor and Hall. The teammates made it look easy despite the conditions. Linden was nearly a minute back from the leaders with five miles remaining, but chipped away at their lead as the Bowerman Track Club duo approached the

final 5K. With two miles remaining, Flanagan appeared to falter and Cragg had to make the difficult decision to leave her teammate. Linden passed Flanagan to take over second but Cragg had already dropped the hammer and was over 20 seconds ahead coming down the final stretch of the loop course. Cragg crossed in 2:28:20, leaving the memories of her 2012 fourth-place disappointment behind her. Linden rallied the crowd as she turned the final corner, cheering and pumping up the fans as she crossed the finish in 2:28:54 to make her second U.S. Olympic Team. Flanagan closed in 2:29:19 to make her fourth U.S. Olympic team. Flanagan has now finished top three at every qualifying event for U.S. teams she’s ever attempted, dating as far back as her first in 2004. The trio turned in the sixth, seventh and eighth fastest all-time women’s performances at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon. Kara Goucher (Boulder) had a near miss, finishing fourth in 2:30:24. Alia Gray (Boulder) ran near even splits for a 10th-place 2:35:47. Though now training out of Mammoth, California, former Colorado runner Adriana Nelson ran 2:38:56, and the Boulder Track Club’s Wendy Thomas (Windsor) ran 2:40:39. Others included: • Whitney Bevins (Boulder) – 2:43:52 • Brianne Nelson (Golden) – 2:44:19 • Ashley Brasovan (Golden) – 2:48:32 • Lavenna Kubatzky (C. Springs) – 2:49:31 • Colleen De Reuck (Boulder) – 2:49:31 • Nicole Camp (Longmont) – 2:50:29 • Addie Bracy (Longmont) – 2:51:56 • Lauren Fog (Boulder) – 2:55:21 • Kate Pappenberg (Steamboat Springs) – 2:58:46 • Kristin Swisher (Boulder) – 3:01:47 • Faith Stephen (Larkspur) – 3:01:54 • Amanda Scott (Boulder) – 3:09:08 • Claudia Becque (Denver) – 3:09:28 • Joanna Zeiger (Boulder) – 3:23:28 coloradorunnermag.com 43

OVER HILL, OVER DALE, AND I’M PALE At a certain stage of a running career, one may find that a traditional 10K, half- or full-marathon race on a relatively flat asphalt course begins to fall into the “been there, done that” category of life. At least it did for me when I began to seek different types of races that broke from the traditional courses and distances. A friend told me about the Rectifier Run in Montague, Michigan, which was a completely off-road European cross country– style event with hay bales and logs and other hurdles to leap. It was also spiced with mud pools to wade through. Not your run-of-the-mill Saturday-morning race but more a run where you might fall on your face. I described the event to my 11-year-old son and he was geeked, although I’m sure that just a fleeting reference to a mud pool would have been compelling enough for him. Despite my concern that I hadn’t hurdled anything in years higher than a 3x5 index card, we registered. Race day arrived and the first things I noticed in walking to the course were outdoor showers and a slew of thigh-deep, water-filled bins scattered about the finish area. We were clearly in for a unique race. If you were handicapping the run like a horserace, you’d want to know which racers were the true mudders. I don’t mean the runners who can find good treading and balance in fairly wet dirt, but those who can quickly get through a thick, black quicksand-type lagoon with their femurs still remaining in their hip sockets. The indications that the race would be different continued when the race director offered a few short words. Instead of the typical and initial welcoming of runners, the race director asked the crowd, “If anyone is the type to litigate if he or she gets injured, well, could you please leave now?” Those weren’t the most comforting prerace words I would have liked to hear. The starting gun went off just as my son was asking, “What is lit a gate?” I’m sure he was excitedly thinking that around the bend was the opportunity to jump over flaming fences like an outdoor Cirque du Soleil. At first, things seemed easy enough. The initial hurdle was just a little foot-high log jump. Despite having a quarter-mile running start, I cleared it with only half a centimeter to spare. I’m not sure whether my hop-along son even noticed it existed; he never broke stride. The degree of difficulty of the barriers quickly changed, and we encountered monstrous (to me at least) sand piles, log jumps, hay bales, and so on. (You non-Rectifier runners have no clue what and so on means. To participate is to know.) Word of warning if you’re someone who tends to zone out during races: You may find yourself firmly planted, forehead first, in a suddenly appearing 10-foot-high hard mound of dirt. All of which gives new meaning to hitting the wall. My son had a continuous ear-to-ear smile on his face, while I’m sure I was exuding a look of sheer fear, not knowing whether the mother of all obstacles was lurking ahead of us. As we ran through a barn during the latter portion of the race, I could tell we were approaching the legendary mud pond when we began to hear the squeals of spectators and runners alike. Soon we rounded a corner and headed toward the sludge-and-muck pool of yuck. I initially wondered whether our shoes would have to be totaled after the race. But upon wading into the mud, which was well near waist high, it became a nonissue because our shoes were quickly separated from our feet. I was silently praying my ankles didn’t detach as well. Not knowing whether the lagoon would swallow my son, I gallantly allowed him to climb on my shoulders. We were eventually able to extricate ourselves from the morass, and I was thankful I wouldn’t have to explain to my wife how 12 strangers and a mule were

required to remove us from the quagmire. Covered in mud, we slowly moved toward the finish line together. My son was in seventh heaven as he enthusiastically hollered along with the other runners and spectators. Despite the fact that the inherent enthusiasm of an 11-year-old boy is usually quite contagious, I remained more solemn. I was more than a bit concerned that somewhere under the mud encasing my body existed the likelihood that my running shorts had come off as well. Once we finished, I quickly hopped in the outdoor shower to face the inevitable. Twenty minutes of mud washing later, I was able to discern that, thankfully for all, my shorts had remained in place. As we headed back to the car, my son was already asking whether we could sign up for next year’s race. I only hoped that by then I would have successfully removed all the dried mud from my eyelashes and ears. Of course, as any competitive runner would do, I started devising training methods to improve my race time. It appeared that to simulate the thick and deep mud pool, knee-high snowdrift wind sprints were going to be on next winter’s training regimen. Bring on that mire! No stick in the mud for me.
