What parents need to know about

bullying (BPT) - Unfortunately, bullying in schools is all too common. According to StopBullying.gov, between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 U.S. students say they have been bullied at school. While the term “bullying” has certainly become a buzz word, it’s also important to understand what it means. The Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education define it as a pattern of unwanted aggressive behavior that causes physical or psychological harm. “As a high school counselor for over 10 years, I’ve witnessed bullying and its impacts in different ways - from working with administrators and teachers to put a stop to it in classrooms, to supporting parents and students as they attempt to heal and find the

best path forward,” said Carol Heavin, a school counselor for Arkansas Virtual Academy who has been in education for 28 years. National Bullying Prevention Month is a reminder for all of us to think about how we can help stop this behavior in our schools. One of the best ways to help prevent bullying is to empower parents with useful advice, including warning signs to watch for, tips on how to talk to your kids about bullying and information on where to go for help. Because the long-term effects of bullying can be serious for a child, a parent’s actions and support can help protect them from harm. Heavin offers the following warning signs and tips:

How to talk to your kids:

• Change in your child’s attitude or visible loss of

If you notice these warnings and suspect your child could be a victim of bullying, talking to your child is a critical step to understanding what is happening and building trust. Keep these things in mind as you decide how and when to talk to your child:

confidence; this includes nonverbal and verbal

• Be available to your child and schedule at least one

If you suspect your child is a victim of bullying, watch for these warning signs:

changes, from how they carry themselves (dejected, slumped posture) to expressing suicidal thoughts • Any unexplained, physical bruising or injuries • Withdrawing from usual hobbies and interests • Change in dress • Change in friend group or sudden loss of friends

weekly family dinner or outing to connect and check in • Ask your child about their day, every day, to keep the lines of communication open • Find a time to talk to your child in a relaxing environment, such as listening to music, watching a sports game or doing an art project together • Start the conversation with your child with topics that interest and build a rapport with them. As hard as it may be, don’t push them to share something they may not be ready to share; however, consistent reminders that you are available to talk are important cues

What to do: After you’ve identified warning signs, and you believe that your child is a victim of bullying at school, there are a few things you should consider and keep top of mind. • Take a deep breath and stay as calm as possible • Document as many details as you can from your child, including what is being said or done to them, who may have witnessed the repeated behavior, etc. • Speak to the school administration, sharing as many documented details as you can • Ensure your child is a part of an environment that uplifts them (i.e., church events, sports, other clubs) • If possible, remove them from the bullying situation and consider other academic opportunities, such as a tuition-free online public school

Children can be cruel, and adults simply can’t chaperone 24-7. For this reason, many times schools don’t find out about bullying until it’s been taking place for a long time. Students are embarrassed and uncomfortable speaking freely about what’s been happening to them. By following this advice, you’re already helping to stop bullying and protect your child. Littleton Public Schools: Your destination district!

Littleton Public Schools (LPS) is a premier school district located a few miles south of downtown Denver. With a longstanding tradition of excellence, LPS is the only school district in the Denver metro area to receive the Colorado Department of Education’s highest accreditation rating, “Accredited with Distinction,” eight times. And with close community ties, LPS has passed every election brought to voters throughout its history. LPS serves 28 square miles and includes the majority of the City of Littleton, the Town of Columbine Valley and portions of the municipalities of Bow mar, Centennial, Greenwood Village and Englewood. With about 15,300 students, LPS offers a comprehensive education from preschool through Grade 12. The district remains committed to keeping class sizes at a level where children can receive personal attention.

Schools and a high school International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and district schools annually receive the John Irwin School of Excellence Award and the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award. LPS offers STEM in all LPS elementary, middle and high schools. Middle school STEM labs were recently updated and include learning experiences in a wide array of areas, including: aeronautics, robotics, architecture, audio production, graphic design and 3D printing. Every year LPS students bring home top state and national honors from Technology Student Association conferences.

Students attend 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, several alternative programs and two charter schools. LPS also offers preschool and kindergarten, with kindergarten options that include half-day and full-day classes - some full-day kindergarten options are free. All elementary schools offer before- and after-school childcare and summer childcare.

LPS students consistently score among the top of all metro-area students on state assessment tests. As a preferred choice, 19 percent of LPS students live outside district boundaries and choose to open-enroll in LPS schools. In addition to the “Accredited with Distinction” rating, LPS is a multiple-time recipient of the ELPA Excellence Award for its English Language Development (ELD) program. LPS also offers National Blue Ribbon

All three high schools are nationally recognized and have been featured in Newsweek’s “Top High Schools in America” and 5280’s “Best High Schools.” They boast regional and state champions in athletics, academics, STEM and performing arts. Ben Franklin Academy: FULL STEAM AHEAD! Looking for a school that provides rigorous academic curriculum with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM), as well as character education? Ben Franklin Academy is The Core Knowledge STEAM School of Choice in Douglas County because we do all that AND MORE! At Ben Franklin Academy (BFA), our mission is to develop students from preschool through eighth grade who are well-read, scientifically curious and civically engaged. That’s why we provide daily instruction in core classes—science, math, social studies and language arts—as well as weekly instruction in technology, art, music, physical education and science lab. Middle school students (grades 6-8) also have core classes daily, as well as STEAM lab, Spanish, Physical Education, Life Skills, Technology and Electives. Here’s why BFA is proud to say that we are The Core Knowledge STEAM School of Choice: Science – Students learn complex material in an age appropriate way and their lessons are reinforced by weekly hands-on experiments which incorporate math, art, engineering, technology and

inquiry into the scientific method. Our kids participate in Space Week, Earth Week, Engineering Week, Code Week, Playground Physics, Science Fair, the STEAM Expo, Star Lab and a number of dissections. Technology – The use of technology is incorporated into the very fabric of BFA—from state-of–the-art classroom technology, to the iPads and computers each student can access. Elementary students not only learn the basics of how to use a computer, typing skills and Google Applications, but they also focus on elements of computer science and coding. Middle school students gain hands-on experience in a variety of intersecting fields to encourage ingenuity, persistence and confidence, including digital photography, graphic design, 3D modeling/printing, electronics and more! And, beginning in fifth grade, students have access to their very own

Chromebooks.

or guitar, to name a few.

Engineering – Various engineering concepts are routinely integrated into BFA’s curriculum. Additionally, elementary students complete a miniengineering unit, and middle school students learn the basics of robotics, construct objects using 3D modeling software, and study software engineering through game design.

Math – BFA primarily uses Saxon Math because its innovative, instructional approach breaks complex concepts into simpler increments that are easier to learn. Research shows that the Saxon approach has produced significantly higher levels of student learning.

Arts – BFA’s strong art curriculum engages the whole child and fosters high achievement in critical thinking, problem solving and collaborative learning. The music program offers a variety of opportunities for students to showcase their creativity and talent, such as musical performances in front of a live audience and introduction to instruments. Middle school kids have the opportunity to be involved in a full-scale musical production on our beautiful stage or take classes on technical theatre, song writing

Students thrive at BFA because we focus on the success of each individual student through the use of flexible ability grouping and differentiated instruction. And, we’re proud that our rigorous curriculum, character education and STEAM focus ensure students are successful when they transition to high school. Five Reasons to Consider a Career as an Electrician Choosing a career that meets our community’s everyday needs is a great way to secure a strong future for yourself and your family. If you’re pondering your first career out of high school, considering a career switch, or transitioning back into civilian life, a career as an electrician is an excellent choice, both now and for the future. Here are 5 reasons why: 1. Great, steady pay - Skilled electricians often make more per hour than other workers in similar careers. Individuals who complete four years of apprenticeship training and then become licensed Journeymen often double their salary in four years, and can advance into other roles such as estimators, project managers, superintendents, or run their own company. In Colorado, the average annual salary for Journeyman electricians is more than $60K (11% higher than the national average). 2. It’s interesting work - If you crave a work environment that doesn’t entail sitting at a desk all day, and changes daily, being an electrician is a rewarding change of pace. You’ll move around to different job sites, and for people who are adept at working with their hands, a career as an electrician is very gratifying.

3. The work is always changing - With smart homes and businesses, not much is constructed or functional without the hands-on skill of an electrician. Being an electrician means constantly learning new ways of the trade. If you are a gamer, the industry needs you for new building information modeling (BIM) or virtual reality (VR) applications. 4. Little to no student debt, and you won’t spend years in college - You probably have friends who attended a university for years only to struggle to find work in their area of study, and have excessive student loans. Electrical apprentice training is affordable and usually paid by your employer, so you earn while you learn, and can begin work and training right after high school. 5. The field isn’t going anywhere Tomorrow’s electricity needs will be more than today’s. In the future, many existing homes and businesses will need rewiring and other electrical changes, but the number of qualified workers could be alarmingly small. Being an electrician can mean plenty of work and job security. z Curious about a career in electricity? Visit www.ColoradoElectricians.com.

STEM School Highlands Ranch: Never Stop Innovating The joy of learning is alive and well at STEM School Highlands Ranch, a free, public charter school of the Douglas County School District for grades K-12. The school places high priority on putting technology in the hands of students and encouraging collaborative learning. From engineering and robotics to game design and digital media production, students have a range of unique learning opportunities starting with coding and languages in kindergarten, to AP classes and concurrent enrollment at colleges for upper grade levels. STEM School Highlands Ranch is one of the few STEM schools that infuses STEM learning in all aspects of education. In addition to integrated, problem-based learning across all STEM subjects, the school offers rigorous humanities courses, arts, world languages, and a theater and music program that was selected as one of the most innovative by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Other examples of collaborative learning include a fourth grade art class working with an industry partner to 3D print projects for presentation at Denver Design Week; a language class video conferencing with peers in China to share ideas about solving global pollution; and teachers and students presenting at the National Cybersecurity Symposium recently held in Colorado Springs. “We worked very hard to open our school to the youngest learners,” said Dr. Penelope Eucker, the Executive Director of STEM School Highlands Ranch. “We believe it is vital that children become excited about science, math and all technology at the very youngest of ages. They grow to appreciate and understand the importance of STEM that will carve the path for the rest of their education and beyond.” School Director Leanne Weyman said, “We are more than just a school. We are a think tank, a learning lab and a catalyst for creativity. Our teachers are role models and innovation coaches who empower students to develop solutions to real world problems. We leverage the power of technology, collaboration and teamwork to spark an interest in STEM and learning at an early age.” Academic Excellence Founded in 2011, the school has successfully added nine grades over the past six years earning Colorado’s highest academic award, the John Irwin Award every year. STEM School Highlands Ranch is ranked sixth in Colora-

do for the state-required SAT and its 2018 scores were the highest in Douglas County. The school serves a total of 1,850 students: 550 in Elementary, 700 in Middle, and 600 in High School. Approximately 22% of students identify as gifted and talented, well above the national average of 5-8% (according to US Dept. of Education). New this year: STEM School Highlands Ranch was recently approved as one of five high schools in Colorado now offering additional opportunities for students pursuing college courses in STEM fields. This is an IBM initiative known as P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools), to create innovative partnerships between school districts, local college(s) and high growth industries. Students receive an advantage by graduating with both a high school diploma and an industry-recognized associate degree and relevant workplace experiences. To learn more, please join us at our High School Open House, on Tuesday, October 30 from 5-7pm. Problem Based Learning At STEM School Highlands Ranch, students are challenged to develop the essential skills necessary to be productive and valued members of a global workforce. As student progresses, the engineering, technology and computer science classes become more rigorous and students begin programming in a variety of languages, learn creative applications like 3D animation/ modeling, game design and app development. Additionally, by high school, students are able to earn industry-level IT certifications by taking classes in A+, Net+, and Security+. In engineering labs, students fine-tune their problemsolving and creative skills as they take classes in a variety of areas, including: • Robotics • Computer Aided Design (CAD) • Digital electronics • Transportation technologies Real World Application Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs, better known as STEM, continue to become a popular educational choice for students not just in Colorado, but also on a national scale. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupations related to STEM is projected to grow 13 percent by the year 2022. These projections are higher than all other occupations around the same time. The STEM School Highlands Ranch Career Discovery program offers students a menu of options to explore business fields in real world settings that can potentially

lead to an internship/apprenticeship or full/part-time job after graduation and during college. Through real-world experiences, STEM School Highlands Ranch has worked to bring schools and industry partners from all regions of the state, country and world together to share ideas, tactics and educational techniques.

Currently, students are working at many Colorado companies, including Panther Industries, Arrow Electronics, Home Advisor and Swift Page. Junior Reade Webb, who worked at Arrow Electronics in the summer of 2017 said, “At Arrow, I work as a normal computer technician. We do almost everything that the regular techs do at work. We do things like build computers, deliver equipment, and fix equipment. Every day is something new, and I am always excited to see what’s next.” Beyond the Classroom Learning at STEM School Highlands Ranch doesn’t stop in the classroom. From BEST Robotics, soccer, cross country and basketball to ballet, cheerleading, theater and fencing, students are engaged in learning after the bell rings at the end of the day. Students are eager to learn even outside the classroom, says Sara Phelps, Enrichment Director. “It’s an opportunity for them to not only discover new areas of learning, but also to make new friends, while developing their teamwork skills.” Innovation and Potential “From science and technology to the environment and global economy, we know that the future will be full of invention and change,” said Weyman. “We believe in the unlimited potential of every child and we use the power of innovation to help every child succeed in an exponentially changing world.” STEM School Highlands Ranch is open every Wednesday at 10 am for tours and no appointment is necessary. The school also accepts open enrollment applications all year long. Englewood Schools: A Small District with Big Opportunities energy, STEM, culinary arts & hospitality, and cosmetology. These courses offer hands on experiences that keep students engaged and also prepare them for the future job market.

A well-rounded education is one that provides students with a close, caring environment while giving them the opportunities they need to explore their passions. Whether they enjoy athletics, art, drama, STEM or all of the above, their education should provide them with enriching experiences that bring learning to life. A smaller district conveniently located just south of Denver, Englewood Schools is your choice district for a caring and complete education from preschool through high school. Englewood combines a caring community with endless opportunities, to create a district where all students can belong and thrive. What Makes Englewood Unique A quality education in Englewood starts in preschool, with a four-star rated Early Childhood Education Center that offers services focused on the whole child, family and community. In kindergarten, Englewood offers free full-day kindergarten at all four elementary schools. The district knows

how important full day kindergarten is for a great start, and believes that tuition should not prevent students from participating in a full-day program. All students in Englewood are given the opportunity to engage in 21st century learning by receiving a district issued Chromebook for use at school and at home. Additionally, Englewood offers hands-on STEM education and state-ofthe-art STEM Labs at every elementary, middle, and high school. Preparing Students for a Successful Future Englewood Schools offers several programs to help students prepare for the rigors of college and a career. These programs engage students through

relevant and rigorous courses, help them to plan for life after high school, and provide multiple ways to earn a high school diploma. Students have access to Advanced Placement and honors courses, which allow them to do college-level work while still in high school, and in some cases, earn college credit. Last year, Englewood saved families more than $324,000 in college tuition thanks to our concurrent enrollment courses, which allow students to enroll in college-level courses and earn college credits at the same time they earn high school credit. Englewood also offers Career and Technical Education courses such as business, agriculture and green

Students have many options for learning including an elementary International Baccalaureate (IB) program, an accelerated program in an award winning (John J. Irwin Colorado School of Excellence for five consecutive years) middle school, alternative educational opportunities at the high school level, as well as more traditional educational opportunities. Approximately 25% of all Englewood Schools’ students come from outside the school district, making it one of the top districts in the state in terms of open enrollment.
