How Much Did Home Sales Fall in 2022 and 2023, and Was It a Record Drop?

At right is a chart showing the number of residential sales within a 25-mile radius of downtown Denver over the past 10 years. I was inspired to do this research because I read in an email newsletter that the nationwide drop for 2023 versus 2022 was the biggest drop in 30 years. As you can see, however, here in the Denver metro area, the 2023 drop in sales was the biggest drop since… the prior year! Moreover, the drop in 2022 was only so big because the increase during the first full year of Covid was so big. As I said, my statistics were for the area within 25 miles of downtown Denver, which I consider to be a reasonable definition of “metro Denver.” The Market Trends Committee of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors uses the same data source as me, namely REcolorado.com, but they define “metro Denver” as 11 counties, many of which extend far from downtown Denver. Here’s what the same chart looks like using those criteria: (11-County Metro)

(Full MLS)

the metro area distort the figures enough to paint a less than accurate picture of the Denver metro market. I’ve added a third chart above top right, this time using the full REcolorado database, which covers much of the state. It’s common to refer to REcolorado as the “Denver MLS,” but it can and does include listings from all over the state. There are other MLSs in the state, but if a listing agent wants to reach Denver buyers, as he or she should, then entering those farflung listings on REcolorado is a must. The third chart tells an important story. If you recall the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, workers throughout the state (and country) were forced to work

from home. When it looked like the pandemic was going to linger, many of those workers decided that working at home could be a long-term arrangement. Moreover, they wanted to move somewhere that was less populated, so they wouldn’t be rubbing shoulders with possibly infected neighbors. That caused a huge surge in out-migration from Denver, which is best reflected in the third chart, where the slow market in rural listings pulled down the statewide average — until the pandemic. Looked at statewide, you’d think that the big drop in 2023 sales was more of a return to pre-pandemic levels than an absolute drop — which it certainly was if looked at on the metro Denver level.

REcolorado has released the rules for a new kind of listing called “Private Exclusive.” It replaces an earlier status called “Office Exclusive,” which made listings by individual brokers only visible to fellow agents in their office, which I felt discriminated against brokerages with fewer agents, like Golden Real Estate.

many sellers wanting to limit the exposure of their listing so drastically. When a listing is active on the MLS, it is displayed not only on REcolorado and other regional MLSs, it is displayed on Zillow, Redfin and every other consumer website, including the websites of virtually every brokerage including Re/Max, Coldwell Banker, Century 21 — and Golden Real Estate. The one likely application for this non-public status would be if the home is in a multi-million dollar neighborhood and is owned by a sports star or celebrity who values his or her privacy, and the listing agent has sold scores of such homes and has a huge personal database of prospective buyers, including other celebrities and ultra-rich persons. The motivation of our MLS to create this new status was to maximize the accuracy of its sold database. When a home is sold off-MLS or as a pocket listing, it’s less likely to be posted on the MLS once it has sold, thereby limiting its visibility to appraisers and other agents looking for comparable sales. When a private exclusive listing is sold, it must be updated with the sold price and terms and is then fully visible as a “closed” listing for all to see, including on those consumer websites like Zillow, homes.com and others. Large brokerages still have an advantage over us smaller brokerages, because other agents within the brokerage can search for and find those listings. They have the same sharing limitations as the listing broker.

MLS Introduces ‘Private Exclusive’ Listings to Combat Pocket Listings

I have been trying for years to get the Market Trends Committee and other real estate statisticians to switch from using the county definition to using the radius definition of the metro area. At right I have overlaid the 25-mile radius of downtown Denver over the 11 counties used by DMAR and other statisticians. Clearly, the rural components of those 11 counties which touch

The new status is intended for sellers who desire a higher level of privacy, by not publicizing widely that they are selling their home and for how much. Under this status, the listing agent cannot put a sign in front of the house and can only promote the listing one-onone to other agents or to prospective buyers in his or her sphere of influence. That means that the listing may not be promoted on social media or be mass emailed, and will not be displayed on the MLS or consumer-facing websites like Zillow until it has sold. The problem with “private exclusive,” of course, is that it severely limits the number of potential buyers who will see it. The advantage for the listing agent of off-MLS listings or “pocket listings” is that he or she is more likely to “double-end” the sale and not have to give half his listing commission to the buyer’s agent. That’s why the listing agent is required to affirm during the listing entry process that the seller requested keeping the listing private, and that that the seller was informed of the implications of not being displayed on the full MLS. With such an affirmation, if valid, it’s hard to imagine

Harris’ trial rescheduled in Golden-area RV murder case Trial now set for July 23Aug. 2 BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The first-degree murder trial against Donald Harris has been rescheduled from mid-June to late July. Harris, 51, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Matthew Hire, 57, who was found dead of a gunshot wound in his RV last spring. Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office investigators believe Hire was killed in late March, but his body wasn’t found until April 14, when a deputy found his RV door swinging open in the Golden-area Wooly Mammoth Park-N-Ride lot. Harris — an acquaintance of Hire’s — has been charged with first-degree murder, a felony charge of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and two sentence

enhancers. Harris, who’s in custody in Denver for a separate case, had a $2 million cash-only bond set in the murder case. After pleading not guilty on Nov. 29, Harris was scheduled for a daylong motions hearing April 12 and a jury trial June 17-26. However, at a Jan. 24 pretrial conference, defense attorney Mitch Ahnstedt asked for new trial dates, as he had a scheduling conflict for mid-June. The prosecution didn’t object. Thus, Judge Jason Carrithers rescheduled the jury trial for July 23-Aug. 2. The prosecutors and defense said the discovery process, including testing various pieces of evidence, is on track for those dates. Ahnstedt doubted the trial would take all nine days, but prosecutors stated there’s a lot of technical evidence, so it was “probably better safe than sorry on this point.” SEE TRIAL, P19

Parking management company to take over downtown Golden this spring City discussing daily enforcement, increased parking rates BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

If all goes as Golden officials hope, parking downtown will get a little easier this spring. The city has drafted a contract with Interstate Parking Company of Colorado to manage all its downtown parking spots, enforcement, permits and related operations. The City Council will vote on the

contract at its Feb. 13 meeting, and if approved, Interstate Parking will take over downtown operations April 1. The contract period is set for three years, and councilors will receive regular updates to review performance, city staff confirmed. In mid-October, Golden sent out a Request for Proposals and received six responses. Five of them were feebased, but Interstate Parking offered a revenue-sharing model. The Denver-based company manages parking for several Colorado municipalities, including Morrison and Idaho Springs, where it has similar revenue-sharing agreements. Interstate Parking also demonstrated the most flexibility and responsive-

ness to Golden’s needs, staff members described at a Jan. 23 City Council work session. Under the proposed contract, the city will receive the first $250,000 in annual revenues from paid parking, permits and enforcement. After that, the city and the company will split revenues 50-50. Meanwhile, Interstate Parking is responsible for all related expenses, such as installing new kiosks, employing parking ambassadors, etc. Steve Glueck, assistant to the city manager, emphasized how the proposed contract would ensure similar or more revenues while reducing city expenses and alleviating several problems simultaneously.

Sign up to receive our weekly newsletter Go to ColoradoCommunityMedia.com and click “Sign up for newsletters” at the top of the page!

For instance, by hiring an outside company for parking enforcement, city personnel will be free to address other issues like code violations along the Clear Creek corridor, Glueck and City Manager Scott Vargo have said. Also, as Glueck has said before, Golden’s current parking system is “cobbled together” with different systems and vendors. So having everything under the Interstate Parking umbrella should be easier for users, he said. Golden officials have heard frequent complaints about residents having to re-register their vehicles every time they park downtown, SEE TAKE OVER, P18

Goldenite Corner: GHS alumnus following dreams of performing arts career BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

“A dream is like a river, everchanging as it flows, and a dreamer’s just a vessel that must follow where it goes.” Jeremiah Jordan Ash has performed these lyrics hundreds of times, playing at small venues across Colorado and beyond. And he knows all too well the truth behind Garth Brooks’ song. Ash, who graduated from Golden

High School in 2000, has been pursuing a career in music since he was a teenager. Now, all his hard work is starting to pay off as his song “All of My Life” was nominated for Song of the Year-Pop/Single Songwriter at the 2023 Josie Music Awards. He’s also released four songs on digital music platforms and plans to release his debut album this fall. GHS is also adding him to its famous alumni display inside the cafeteria’s main entrance. Bob Hayes, president of the alum-

ni foundation and former GHS teacher, recalled how Ash volunteered to sing at the school’s 150th anniversaryevents this summer. Hayes stated he hadn’t known Ash well as a student, but was impressed he’d performed at so many venues over his career. Both Hayes and Ash described how GHS boasts generations of famous alumni, including professional athletes, actors and politicians. Ash said it’s an honor to join their ranks and hoped to make the Golden community proud. “There’s something in the water (at GHS),” Ash said with a smile. “Everyone’s so talented.” Getting his start

Ash, who now lives near Loveland, Colorado, loved growing up in Golden. After his family moved to the city in 1988, he attended Earle Johnson Elementary School — later replaced by Shelton Elementary School.

He recalled his first time performing on stage was singing “Splish Splash” at his third-grade talent show, saying he was hooked by the experience. He continued performing at talent shows and later sang at his sixth-grade graduation. Along with singing, Ash has always enjoyed acting as well. He recalled attending GHS’ production of “Guys and Dolls” while he was at Bell Middle School, saying it inspired him to do theater when he started high school. As a Demon, Ash lettered in choir and theater, saying one of his favorite memories was playing Sonny in “Grease” his junior year. His senior year, he landed his first paying performance job as a singer at Casa Bonita and later sang at his graduation ceremony. His classmates voted him “Most Likely to be the Next Britney Spears/Backstreet Boy” alongside Carolyn Cockle. SEE DREAMS, P10

DREAMS FROM PAGE 8

In the following years, Ash spent much of his time performing. He played at coffee shops, including Golden’s Higher Grounds, and had theater gigs around Denver. In 2008, he was booked as a nightclub singer in Las Vegas, which he felt was an exciting step in his career. His most recent gig was playing Monroe’s Lounge in Loveland. Along with singing and acting, Ash has been writing his own music since 2000. He released his song “All of My Life” last year and was nominated at the Josie Music Awards in Nashville. While Ash has performed a variety of music throughout his career, his original songs lean more country. He remarked how much the music industry has changed in recent years, saying he still hopes to book a label one day but has enjoyed releasing his music on streaming services.

Golden High School alumnus Jeremiah Jordan Ash has been pursuing a performing arts career after graduating in 2000. Ash has booked singing and theater gigs around Colorado, and is releasing his album of original country COURTES PHOTO music later this year.

An encouraging environment

Among his musical influences, he named his dad, Donnie Lee Ash, who died this January. Ash said his dad worked at the Coors brewery for 30 years, and always supported his dreams and passion for performing arts. He dedicated his song “That’s Life” to his dad. Along with his family, Ash also thanked the GHS community. He loved performing with his class-

mates and said his teachers were talented and encouraging. Hayes, a GHS alumnus as well, also believed part of the reason why Golden has produced so many talented alumni is because of the teachers’ passion for their subjects and enthusiasm for their students. Hayes described how support from parents and the larger Golden community has also been a factor, as

it’s helped create a consistent environment even as the personnel has changed. “If the encouragement is there for students, the talents come out,” Hayes continued, “and Golden had a faculty that encouraged and supported students.” To any fellow Demons who are

reaching for the stars, Ash said, “Always follow your dreams. I auditioned for ‘American Idol’ in 2002. I didn’t get it, but I kept going.” That message is one Ash will carry as he continues performing: He’ll never reach his destination if he never tries, so he will sail his vessel ‘til the river runs dry.

VOICES A weekend of comedy and music

T

here’s something funny going on around here. Not right now, but there will be this weekend on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Golden Hotel: the Golden Comedy show! It’s an evening with five of the funniest comedians in Colorado live on stage. The show is produced by Matt Greenwaldt and Jeremy Cash. The duo produces shows all over Colorado under the name Brave New Comedy. They will be joined by Lou Pharis, who has been seen on NBC and is currently touring across America with the Bored Teachers. Also appearing will be Eeland Stribling, who also performs all over the country and just finished in 1st place at the New Faces competition at Comedy Works as well as another regular at that club, Hannah Jones whose videos on Instagram and TikTok have been viewed over 20 million times. The show starts at 8 p.m. and you can get tickets by going to www. eventbrite.com and doing a search for the Golden Comedy Show. They run $20. It may be the middle of winter, and not exactly the time of year most people think about going on vacation, but you can take a quick trip

to another country this Sunday, Feb. 4. That’s when the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra will be presenting its annual Winter Concert and this year it will be featuring the music of Spain. It starts out with John Akal George Bizet’s Overture to Carmen. You’d probably recognize this as it’s infused with Spanish musical elements, the famous “Habanera” melody, and the “Toreador Song,” which reflects the opera’s setting in Spain. Next up is Danza Ritual Del Fuego (“Ritual Fire Dance”) from El Amor Brujo (“Love, the Magician”) by Manuel De Falla. You aren’t going to get much more Spanish than that title, are you? This one is frequently performed in concert halls around the world and is known for its engaging rhythm, evocative melodies, and dramatic contrasts make it a crowd-pleaser that always leaves a lasting impact on audiences. The third offering on the program should be the highlight of the show.

AVENUE FLASHES

It features, not one, but two guest artists, both well known Classical guitarists. Masakazu Ito and Patrick Sutton will be joining forces to perform Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto Madrigal for two guitars and orchestra. Both of these guys have performed all over the world and won numerous awards for their music. Concierto Madrigal draws inspiration from his Mediterranean and Spanish surroundings and incorporates Spanish folk elements and rhythms with Renaissance music of the 16th century. And last on the bill is Spanish with a bit of a twist because the composer was Russian. It’s Capriccio Espagnol, op. 34 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. His masterful use of orchestration in the piece creates a vivid portrayal of the Spanish soundscape and festive celebrations. And all of this will be conducted by Musical Director Dr. J. Arturo González. The Jefferson Symphony’s Winter Concert will be at 3 p.m. in the Green Center on the Colorado School of Mine’s Campus. Tickets run $27 for Adults, $22 for Seniors (60+), $10 for Students (10-17) and $5 for Children 11 and under. You

can order them on their website at www.jeffsymphony.org. Speaking of the website, I highly recommend that you give it a visit. It was recently redesigned and updated, and the whole thing is terrific! All the usual concert information and ticket links are there, but now there also are full bios of the guest artists, links to recordings and more links to loads of information about the composers and their music. If you like classical music, you could spend all afternoon on there and be highly entertained. So, there’s a couple of fun things you can do this weekend. I might add that it might be a good time to start shopping for something for the love in your life because Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. I’m giving you a heads-up now so you don’t forget about it and end up in the dog house or scrambling at the last minute in the card aisle. New cartoon, ‘Never Will I Ever,’ hits puzzle page BY MICHAEL DE YOANNA MICHAEL@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

On the beloved puzzle page of this week’s newspaper, you find something new to give you a laugh. It’s a comic from lifelong Coloradan Marc Vargas called “Never Will I Ever.” They’re single panel comics that will run weekly and debut this week. In one, for example, a man sits in a chair and is covered in cats. “Never will I ever have to turn up the heat… again,” the comic reads. Whether it be teaching a grand-

child to drive or ignoring an emergency alert on your mobile phone, Vargas’ weekly comics highlight the small disasters of daily life and outcomes that typically make us wiser the next time. The comic is punctuated by the word, “again.” It implies it really happened “and ended horribly wrong,” as Vargas said. Or, in some cases, only mildly wrong, because life could be much worse than being covered in cats on a cold day. Vargas is a longtime illustrator. He’s put his pen to work for papers

in Denver and Boulder, the Colorado Rockies and for books and other publications. So, where does he get his ideas? “I’m a trained observer,” he says. “I love to watch people interact. I’m the guy in the back of the room watching everything happening. My ideas come from overhearing conversations, watching people do crazy stuff and my own catastrophes. These get my brain percolating.” Vargas got his start as a kid, admiring the likes of Charles Schultz of “Peanuts” fame. He went to Colorado State University, but also the

Joe Kubert School of Cartooning in Dover, New Jersey, which he calls a life-changer. After working for the college paper, including editorial cartoons, and receiving an honor from the Society of Professional Journalists, he got hooked. “I hope people are entertained,” he said. “Possibly they will laugh or smile. Maybe they’ll say, ‘Yes, I remember trying to shovel snow with a crappy shovel.’ A smile, a laugh, a little seltzer down the pants (I stole that from somewhere). This is an absurd and crazy world we live in. Laughing is our only armor.”

Revisit a critical historical moment at Wings Over Rockies

W

hen people think of the Cold War, images of nuclear bombs and covert spies are probably among the first images that come to mind. But for Stewart Bailey, collections manager at the Wings Over the Rockies museum, there’s something else he likes to focus on. “The first battle of the Cold War was won by the Western Allies and was won with airplanes,” he said. “Not only that, but those airplanes didn’t have guns or bombs. Instead, for 11 months the Allies worked to support a city of 2.6 million people entirely by air.” The story of that battle is told in the Air and Space Museum’s, 7711 East Academy Blvd. in Denver, new exhibit, The Berlin Airlift: Supplies from the Sky. The exhibition runs through Monday, May 27, and marks the 75th anniversary of the Airlift. The exhibit tells the story of the nearly year-long effort by the United States, Britain and other countries to keep the people of Berlin alive during the Berlin Blockade, when the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies’ railway, road and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. “At the beginning, the Allies were using any kind of plane that could handle cargo and there were some accidents and a lot of confusion,” Bailey said. “Eventually it got better and the efforts were extremely efficient. There were planes coming in with materials like coal on average of every three minutes.” The creation of the exhibit is largely due to donations from two families who had members who participated in the Airlift, including Denver resident Thomas Moss, who was a C-54 pilot during the events. His daughters Barbara Drury and Linda Lewis donated many of their father’s artifacts to the museum and that provided the backbone for the story told in the display. “This exhibit isn’t so much about the planes and technology as it is about the people and the human experience of what they went through,” Bailey said. “I think it’s powerful because it shows how people’s opinions can change — we went from

years of fighting the

COMING Germans to helpATTRACTIONS ing them and Ger-

mans went through years of fearing the sound of Allied planes to finding hope in it.” As well as donated artifacts, the exhibit features a lot of photos and creative set dressing Clarke Reader to give just a taste of what being in bombed-out Berlin would be like. The aim was also to make it interactive for all ages, so it includes activities like weight and balance exercises and more. In addition to learning more about a historical event that many people might not be aware of, Bailey hopes visitors come away with a greater appreciation of the many ways the Berlin Airlift influenced the ensuing decades. “One of the key takeaways from this exhibit is that freedom is something to be valued and supported,” he said. “In many ways, the Airlift still echoes through our world today.” Tickets and details can be found at https://wingsmuseum.org/exhibits/berlin-airlift/. LSO uses ‘Peter and the Wolf’ to enchant young audiences

Get ready for some family fun at the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra’s annual children’s and family concert, which will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway. Not only will it feature Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” as it does every year, but also “Add Story and Play,” where the audience will create a story with several characters, develop a plot and choose music to go along with the story. Then the narrator, Joel Hillan, from CBS 4, will tell the brand-new story while conductor Matthew Switzer leads the orchestra, performing the music the audience has chosen to go along with the story. Meet some of the people behind the new automated trains at Denver International Airport BY JO DAVIS JDAVIS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Twenty-six new automated trains are coming to Denver International Airport this summer, according to operators. Currently, 31 automated trains carry ticketed airport passengers from the three active concourses. About half the fleet has been in service since the airport opened in 1995 and has run over 1.4 million miles, so replacements are sorely needed, according to the airport. The new trains are also automated, but more than 73 people are responsible for keeping them running every day around the clock. “Passenger traffic at Denver International Airport is expected to reach more than 78 million by the end of this year alone, and 100 million annual passengers are expected within the next three to five years. We are preparing for the future in a variety of ways, including renovating the Great Hall, adding gates to concourses and adding capacity to the trains to the gates,” DIA CEO Phil Washington said. “New train cars will increase the number of passengers that can be moved to the gates by approximately 850 per hour. They will reduce the time between arriving trains and allow us

to run a more effective operating schedule. These efficiencies are going to be felt by passengers and make for a more seamless experience at DEN.” The first of the new trains arrived in December 2023 and will be tested through the next six months. Everyone is excited, from the director of operations to the mechanic who maintains the trains. The new trains may be automated, but the people who keep them running are skilled, working people who are eager to enter the next era of moving people around DIA. The automated people mover and airport nerd stuff

The trains are important to the operation of the airport, according to DIA Senior Director of Operations Matt Robb. “You can’t get to B and C concourse. The only way you can get there is on the train,” Robb explained. “It is a single point of failure, which is why we put such a heavy emphasis on maintaining (the trains). If we get the train doesn’t move, the airport doesn’t move.” Robb said that trains and airports have been his passion since age 13, when he took a trip through the O’Hare International Airport. Roberto Cortez, of Commerce City, has been working on the trains at DIA for Alstom for 24 years. He explained how his military background (maintaining helicopters) and experience as an auto mechanic helped when he started learning to fix the trains. PHOTO BY JO DAVIS

The new trains are at the shop and being tested by a special team right now. RJ Henessy Alstom DIA Site Production Manager and Maintenance Manager, said the new train PHOTO BY PETER SCOTT BARTA is testing now, with styrofoam bumpers on the sides to ensure that measurements and other stats keep the train from bumping into the walls.

DIA TRAINS BY THE NUMBERS

Alstom, the company contracted to operate and maintain the DIA trains, has a display of flags in its shop. The flags represent the United States, Colorado and the branches of the military represented by their staff. According to Matt Fasbender, human resources manager, more than half of the people who work for Alstom are military veterans. PHOTO BY JO DAVIS

“There were so many people here. So many airplanes. So much space. The logistics of operating a place like that, the challenges, again, it’s all about the movement of people,” Robb said. “So how they could operate a place like that was beyond what my 13-year-old brain could comprehend. So really, this is like some next-level airport nerd stuff.” Robb fell in love with airports as a teen, taking trips with his dad to airports in Oklahoma City and Dallas Forth Worth. “We just ride the train around and walk around the airport and spend a morning and afternoon just in the airport,” Robb said. His love of airports and moving people started there. Robb explained that the DIA trains are operated by Alstom, a contractor that manufactures French rails. “They build a lot of surface rail trains, the traditional trains actual trains,” Robb said. According to Robb, besides himself, only one other DIA employee, the automated guideway transit system administrator, works with the train system inside the airport. The rest of the people behind the trains work for Alstom.

Keeping the trains running around the clock

Robb noted that the trains are not actually trains on a track. They have wheels and tires. “We call the train the AGTS, which is an automated guideway transit system,” Robb explained. “We also sometimes call it an APM, which is an automated people mover. It’s not, it is a train. But really, they’re just like big, automated buses, they run on big rubber wheels. And then there’s a guideway in between that kind of keeps them going where they are supposed to, but there’s no rail or anything.” Alstom makes the trains and also operates a section of the airport accessed beneath the concourses by way of the tunnel system. Alstom owns and operates the shop where the trains are maintained, repaired and tested. According to Aurora resident and Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Alstom DIA Marcus Huff, the site had gone 812 days without an accident at the time of Colorado Community Media’s interview at DIA. Because of the importance of the trains, Huff said safety is a top priority. The reason, according to Alstom DIA Operations Manager Shawn Bingham, also from Aurora, is because of the downtime commitment between Alstom and Denver.

Bingham said the trains have to be available 99.94% of the time that the airport is open. And the airport never closes. “In a 31-day month, there are 44,600 minutes in that month,” Bingham explained. “We have about 20 minutes of downtime out of those 44,600 minutes every month. So, we can try to paint that picture for taking such a small amount of downtime on average every month out of those 44,600 available minutes. And that’s about 99.94% availabilities.” Alstom DIA Site Production Manager and Maintenance Manager RJ Hennessy, from Brighton, explained that up to seven trains run each day to keep up with the demand. The highest demand for the trains is in the spring and summer, not during the holidays, Hennessy said. “Don’t get me wrong. We typically have (high demand) maybe two days around each of those holidays,” Hennessy said. “That’s it. The people coming in for the holiday season and the people leaving for the holiday season are pretty much it. So, it’s two days around the Thanksgiving timeframe. And around the Christmas timeframe. That’s it — just two days. In the summertime — take those two days and now put them over probably two weeks. And it starts at

26 new trains will come online at DIA by the end of 2024 6,500 passengers ride the trains every day 78 million passengers expected in 2024 100 million passengers per year by 2027 31 trains in the fleet before the new trains 16 of the old trains were in operation for 29 years 1.4 million miles run by the old trains being retired 41 trains will be in the DIA fleet by the end of 2024 15 minutes maximum amount of downtime allowed for the train system each month. 812 days since the last accident in the Alstrom DIA shop (as of Jan. 11, 2024) 73 employed by Alstom to operate and run the trains at DIA 2 DIA employee works with the train system

spring break.” Keeping the trains going all year, with only 20 minutes of downtime per month takes the help of all 73 Alstom employees, according to Bingham. Who keeps the trains running

Alstom DIA Senior HR Manager Matt Fasbender said the Alstom team is more than 50% military veterans. The employees come from all over the Denver Metro area. Many of the Alstom team members have been working at DIA for more than 20 years. “About 27 people have 25 years or more,” Fasbender said. Roberto Cortez, a mechanic from Commerce City, is one of those military vets with a long tenure at the site. “I had like I had 10 years in the Marine Corps,” Cortez said. “So, I had already been through a lot of oopsies and the mistakes when you start turning wrenches. It made the transition pretty easy.” Cortez said that his experience working on cars and military helicopters helped when he started working on the DIA trains 24 years ago. “It’s not that technology is the same, but technical aspects and using logic, stuff like that is,” he said. Ryan Parrish, a train mechanic for Alstom DIA from Thornton, agreed that his military background prepared him for work on the trains. “I was in the army for five years. I worked on the Patriot missile system,” he said. “I guess I wanted work that kind of translated.” Parrish went to Spartan College of Aeronautics in Broomfield to acquire more skills. His counselor at the college directed Parrish to Alstom. “I mean, there’s no money in the civilian world for taking out aircraft, but money is in fixing things,” he said. Parrish has been with Alstom at DIA for six years. Carlos Alvarez is a helper mechanic from Aurora with two years at Alstom DIA. Alvarez was also educated at Spartan College. He worked on wind turbines before coming to Alstom. His previous skills helped ease the learning curve when he came to work on the trains. “Once you know how to read schematics and turn wrenches, it’s all the same,” Alvarez said. The mechanics, managers and everyone else at Alstom are eager to get their hands on the new train. Cortez said they are just “peeking over the shoulders” of the new train’s

testers for now. “They don’t want us to touch it,” Cortez said. “But the testing process is a little regimented so that they’re not gonna let us put our hands on the train until they figure it out. And get it going. Then, they’re gonna give it to us so we can tear it up. I mean, so we can work on it.” “We have a team that is here specifically for introducing the new trains,”

Bingham said. “And they have a very, as (Alvarez) said, regimented plan that they follow, testing and making sure the train functions the way it’s supposed to. That it assimilates into our system the way it’s supposed to.” He said the train must run 300 hours without fail before Cortez and the others get to it. According to Bingham, the new

trains should be online and transported by the public this summer. Until then, these people will see to the trains, and to moving people throughout the Denver International Airport. For more information on the new train system, Alstom and the Denver International Airport, visit FlyDenver.com.

While these details haven’t been finalized, city officials have discussed expanding downtown’s parking enforcement from weekdays only to every day. City staff stated in a Jan. 4 memo that this would “ensure management

Principal planner Matt Wempe clarified in an email that, if City Council approves it, two-hour free parking and paid parking throughout downtown would be enforced from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. every day. Additionally, because much of the city’s parking regulations and costs haven’t been updated since 2017, Wempe and other staff members have recommended increasing fines and parking rates. The current rates are $2 an hour after the first two hours, with a daily maximum of $8 a day. To adjust for inflation and increased expenses, staff has recommended increasing parking rates to $2.50 an hour after the first two hours, with a daily maximum of $10. Wempe said these details and others would be decided at the Feb. 13 meeting. During the Jan. 23 work session,

Muriby recommended the city have some kind of grace period as people get used to the new system. How long it lasts would be up to the councilors, but he suggested “at least a few days of warnings for people to get used to the new system.” For residential and employee parking permits, Muriby believed the current ones would be transferred

to Interstate Parking’s system, and it would be responsible for issuing new ones and reissuing updated ones. Overall, he believed Interstate Parking would be very accommodating and responsive to the needs of residents and other users, such as issuing guest parking passes and expanding enforcement for holidays and events.

Carrithers also continued the pretrial conference to 1 p.m. March 5, where Harris will appear by video. The daylong motions hearing was also rescheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 20, which Harris will attend in person. Both the prosecution and defense have until April 19 to file their motions, Carrithers noted. History of the case

During Harris’ Aug. 11 preliminary hearing, Jeffco Sheriff’s Office investigators testified how, on the night of March 25, Hire’s RV was parked outside the Golden hotel Harris and his girlfriend were stay-

ing at. Harris and Hire were in the RV, and Harris reportedly didn’t come back to the hotel room that night and didn’t answer his phone. The next morning, the RV was gone and Harris wouldn’t tell his girlfriend where he’d been. Harris’ girlfriend later told investigators how, before Hire’s death, she’d overheard Harris and another friend talk about having access to Hire’s money and how they were going to “rip him off.” According to JCSO, cell phone data showed both Harris and Hire’s phones were at the Wooly Mammoth lot between 3-3:30 p.m. March 26. However, a few hours later, the Golden Police Department contacted Harris at the Golden Home Depot and arrested him on out-

standing warrants in Denver. After Hire’s body was found inside the RV on April 14, JCSO investigators examined the items Harris had when he was arrested and found a jacket with Hire’s blood on it. Harris also had Hire’s cell phone and keys to storage containers inside Hire’s RV. Investigators also reviewed messages Harris sent and received while he was in jail, where he reportedly coordinated with friends to hide evidence, such as the RV itself and his girlfriend’s Jeep. In searching the Jeep, JCSO found a .22-caliber revolver that’s believed to be the murder weapon. It had a single fired shot in it, which matched the bullet fragments found in Hire’s body. The revolver also had Hire and Harris’ DNA on

it, investigators stated. During the Aug. 11 preliminary hearing, Harris’ defense attorneys contested the first-degree murder charge, saying there was little to no indication of any premeditation or physical evidence the homicide took place in the RV. JCSO investigators confirmed there was no visible blood spatter, and all the tested surfaces were negative for blood. There also wasn’t anything to indicate a gun had been fired in the RV, or that the RV had been cleaned, the defense argued. “There’s no evidence this homicide even happened in Jefferson County,” one of Harris’ attorneys said. “ … (The prosecution) hasn’t presented any evidence as to where the homicide might have occurred.”

Lydia Loveless, who hails from Columbus, Ohio, is a songwriter’s songwriter. Over their career they’ve delved deep into the rather nebulous “altcountry” world and in 2023 they released “Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again.” As usual, it’s an astounding collection of songs, chronicling a breakup and the struggle to find a way to move forward in a difficult world. In support of the record, Loveless will be performing at the Globe Hall, 4483 Logan St. in Denver, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. They will be joined by singer/songwriter Jason Hawk Harris and alt-country up-and-comer Cousin Curtiss. Get tickets for the concert at https:// globehall.com.

SPORTS Better, stronger, faster

Seniors help Mines swim teams break records at final home meet BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The seniors on the Colorado School of Mines swim teams have pushed themselves and their teammates to get better every meet and every season. And, during the final home meet of their careers, their efforts were as clear as water. On Jan. 27, the Mines swim teams celebrated 11 seniors and obliterated the visiting Adams State teams, breaking several pool and program records in the process. “Every year, we get bigger (and) we get faster,” senior Max Waring said. “I think last year was our biggest national team ever. We’re getting way more depth every year, and we’re getting faster.” The women’s team crushed the competition 164-84. Among the highlights was senior Annie Osmun, who spent her Senior Day breaking her own pool record in the 100-yard fly race. Sophomore Cameryn Schmidt also set records in the 50-yard breaststroke and 50-yard fly races, and fellow sophomore Jordan Tierney did likewise in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races and the 100-yard individual medley. The men’s team had a similarly stellar performance, beating Adams State 169-124. The 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore Luca Burns and seniors Garrett Waite, Charles Burroughs and Seth Krause broke the previous pool record set in 2020-21. Krause also broke Burroughs’ program record in the 50-yard fly race. Waite followed suit in the 100-yard individual medley, setting new pool and program records. The two seniors said beforehand how excited they were to have their family members, friends and future coworkers cheering them on at their final home meet. Krause even predictively remarked how he was “excited to swim and break some records.” Now, the Orediggers turn their focus to the RMAC Championships Feb. 13-17 in Grand Junction where they hope to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships in mid-March. While swimmers can qualify for nationals at any point in the season, Waite said, “RMAC is usually the time when we have our best chance, because we’re suited, tapered and shaved.” Krause said one of his career highlights was his first time qualifying for nationals as a sophomore. He and his fellow seniors hoped to have similar success this year, and based on their Senior Day performances, they’re swimming in the right direction. The final lap

Although the seniors are savoring their final moments in the pool, many of them have jobs and other plans lined up for next year. Krause plans to take a software engineering role, hopefully in his home state of Minnesota. Burroughs, a Lone Tree native who used his COVID-19 year of eligibility to get his master’s degree, plans to move to Texas and work for Peterbilt Motors. Waite has signed on with a Lakewood-based company to design pools, waterparks and other aquatic features. “I will be staying around the pool for a long time to come,” he said. Other seniors like Waring and Emma Neuroth, who are from Parker and Lakewood, respectively, have another year of eligibility and could return next year if they wanted. Both Waring and Neuroth are planning to pursue master’s degrees at Mines next year. But, while Waring was unsure about swimming again, Neuroth seemed content with four years on the team. “I definitely plan on being (their) No. 1 cheerleader in the crowd, maybe helping around on the pool deck, if I can,” Neuroth continued. “I’m still going to be there for the team, just outside of the pool.” Among their favorite memories in and out of the pool, the five seniors listed their annual team

Neuroth couldn’t believe she and her classmates were already celebrating Senior Day, commenting how quickly the last four years have gone by despite all the hard classwork and practices. Waite, who’s been swimming for 18 years, recalled everyone who’s inspired him throughout his life and swimming career. In both his role as team captain and future job of designing pools, he hoped to do the same for the next generation of swimmers. “I just wish that they have the same opportunities that I did,” Waite continued. “I’m making sure there’s a future for them in this sport.”

SUPPORT LOCAL JOURNALISM

DON’T LET YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPERS GO SILENT.

This year, even more than ever before, the news is in crisis. More than 17,000 news media jobs were cut just by June, at national and local outlets including at some of the biggest names like NPR, The Texas Tribune and Gannett. In fact, newsroom layoffs are up 20% from last year. Some of these outlets laid off more than 10% of their staff in the last few months — even as we head into a critical election year. These are devastating numbers. But all is not lost. Many local and independent newsrooms continue to launch across the country. With your contributions and subscriber memberships, small newsrooms like ours continue to grow, adding new journalists and expanding reporting and investigations. We’re committed to bringing the news to Coloradans. That’s because you deserve access to local, independent journalism that keeps you connected and informed — especially during challenging times. This is #newsCOneeds.
