GHS basketball teams host competition to collect food items for BGOLDN BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

This year’s Jamie Wiggins Food Drive was the beginning of a beautiful rivalry between Golden High School’s boys and girls basketball teams. Jamie Wiggins, a GHS boys basketball parent and a Jefferson County teacher, started the food drive after she was diagnosed with cancer. She wanted to do something to benefit the community, and the GHS boys

basketball team has continued the annual food drive in her honor, organizers described. This year, for the first time, the GHS girls basketball team also participated in the food drive, with the boys and girls teams competing to see who could bring in the most items. The food drive to benefit BGOLDN ran Jan. 8-23, and community members were asked to bring food items or monetary donations at the Jan. 19 home games versus Alameda High School.

All levels of boys basketball players typically compete against each other to bring in the most items, with this year’s winner receiving a gift card to Atomic Cowboy. But, GHS athletic secretary Amber Hayes encouraged the girls team to participate as well, hoping a friendly competition between the boys and girls teams would supercharge the food drive. “If you put a competition behind something, it’s just one of those things where you have … that extra incentive,” Hayes said. “ … It gets the community involved too.” On top of bragging rights, Hayes said the losing team must attend the winner’s game to cheer on the Demons. However, she hoped that no matter which team wins, the other team “will go and support them just for supporting the cause,” she continued. During after-school practices on Jan. 18, Coach Jonathon Sena and senior Zonya Bermanis said the girls basketball players were enjoying the friendly competition. They said all levels of players — 38 in total — had gone after the food drive competition with full force and were happy to support a good cause. The Jan. 18 tally showed the boys were winning, so Bermanis hoped to rally her teammates before the deadline. She said she’s also been

recruiting her classmates and teachers to contribute to the food drive as well. Sena and Bermanis hoped to see this friendly rivalry continue in 2025 and beyond. “It’s fun to bring the teams together this way,” Bermanis said. “I wish we’d started (this competition) sooner.” The boys basketball players had the advantage on Jan. 18, bringing in bags of canned goods and giant boxes of snacks. Because many of them have been participating in the food drive since they were freshmen, they had triedand-true collection strategies, like bulk shopping at Costco or collecting donations from family members and friends. Seniors Slade Pike and Luc Chevalier said they’ve participated in the food drive all four years. They appreciated an opportunity to support a good cause, describing how much BGOLDN — formerly the Golden backpack program — does for local students and families. Additionally, both have enjoyed the competition among the boys basketball players and the new rivalry between the girls basketball players. “I’m happy to see it continue,” Pike said of the annual food drive. “It brings us together, and it gets very competitive.”

NAR Releases Profile of Denver Metro Area Buyers and Sellers

Last week I reported on the real estate market in metro Denver. This week, I’m providing information from a National Association of Realtors (NAR) survey of buyers and sellers that was released in December. NAR did a national survey but provided data from the 169 Denver area respondents who had purchased a home in the 12-month period from July 2022 through June 2023. The buyers were identified from public records of transactions, not from MLS data. Those buyers who had also sold a home constituted the database for the survey of sellers. The survey was limited to buyers of primary residences, not investment properties. Here’s my editing of the report released for Denver via the Denver Metro Association of Realtors.

Characteristics of Home Buyers • In Denver, the median age of recent home buyers was 43 years old, compared to 49 nationally. The largest share of home buyers in Denver this year were in the 25 to 34 years age group (27 percent) and the 35 to 44 years age group (25 percent). This graph shows both the Denver and national breakdowns:

• 82 percent of buyers were White/ Caucasian, 9 percent were Hispanic/ Latino, 2 percent were Black/African American, 8 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander, and 3 percent identified as other.

Financing the Home Purchase • For 42 percent of buyers, the source of the downpayment was their savings, and 35% of buyers cited using the proceeds from the sale of a primary residence for their downpayment. 10% used gifts from friends or relatives. • The median percent financed for first-time buyers was 91 percent compared to 75 percent for repeat buyers. • Buyers continue to see purchasing a home as a good financial investment. 82 percent reported they view a home purchase as a good investment.

home was the desire to move closer to friends and family (17 percent), the prior neighborhood had become less desirable (9 percent), or they moved due to retirement (8 percent). • Sellers typically lived in their home for 10 years before selling.

Do replace damaged countertops. Do repair damaged walls and replace damaged doors that can’t be repaired. Do replace those 1990s glass-and-brass lighting fixtures. (They’re so unappealing that Habitat’s thrift store won’t accept them as donations!) Do replace burned out light bulbs. Now that LED replacement bulbs are so cheap (under a dollar in bulk at many stores), I suggest replacing all your incandescents or CFLs with LED “daylight” equivalents. Do repaint where there is peeling or discolored paint. (Think “eyesore.”) Do replace rotted timbers on your deck, then power wash and re-stain or repaint as necessary. Do improve curb appeal (always the first impression), including weeding and pruning and freshening the front door.

man for our clients.) Beyond the above advice, I tell my sellers to be strategic about major issues which they know need to be done. If these are likely to become inspection issues, don’t fix them prior to listing your home if they’re not the kind of eyesore which would deter a buyer from making an offer. For example, I had a listing with damage to the concrete driveway. The seller was thinking he should repair it before putting the home on the market. We knew it would be an inspection issue, but by leaving it undone we could use it as a bargaining chip. Sure enough, we got under contract and the inspection demands included repairing the driveway. Since it was the most expensive item on a long list of repairs, we said we’d repair that but nothing else, and the buyer accepted it.

Golden considering reservation system for 2025 tubing season For 2024, city plans to limit creek access points, modify beach area BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

While summer seems a lifetime away amid the recent cold weather, it won’t be long before the Clear Creek corridor is once again packed with tubers. The City of Golden is considering implementing a reservation system for 2025, City Manager Scott Vargo stated at a Jan. 16 community meeting on managing Clear Creek. But, nothing’s been finalized yet. For summer 2024, the city is working on several measures to improve safety, parking, data collection and other aspects of the corridor. Vargo said the goal is to continually improve the corridor from one season to the next, and create a better creek experience for all users. City staff has recommended reducing the number of creek access points within city limits. There are currently about 40, and Vargo said the city’s planning to close 25 with new fencing and/or gates. Golden’s also focused on reconfiguring the remaining access points, especially Clear Creek Whitewater Park’s beach area, less welcoming to large parties. Staff members have

described how the beach is a problem area for drinking and littering. Based on public input at the Jan. 16 meeting, Vargo said the city is moving forward on both measures. He clarified that community members can still provide feedback, especially on what type of gate the city should use to close access points, on Gui-

dingGolden.com. Golden also plans to increase staff presence along the corridor and create a more formalized check-in process. This will serve as a jumping-off point for a potential reservation system in 2025, Vargo said. “(It’s) a much more challenging approach with a corridor like this

versus something like a ski hill,” he continued. “We don’t have a base area. We’re going to try to get closer to … that (by closing) some of these access points.” Vargo clarified in a Jan. 17 email to the Transcript that the city still has several initiatives it must test and validate before it can move forward on a reservation system. This includes improving its data-collection technology and evaluating how effective limiting creek access points is this summer. Along with City Council’s approval and public input, Golden would also have to work closely with outfitters to establish a reservation system design, he said. “When we have validated data and an outline of how a reservation system would operate we would initiate conversations with (City) Council and the public to solicit their feedback,” Vargo continued, saying that likely won’t happen until after the 2024 tubing season. Community feedback on 2024 measures

About 25 community members attended the Jan. 16 meeting and shared their thoughts on the proposed corridor changes. A recurring suggestion was to move tubers to the south creek trail. Currently, tubers are supposed to use the north trail only, with the south trail open to pedestrians and cyclists. SEE TUBING, P6

Meow Wolf artist debuts his first film at Sundance Film Festival BY JO DAVIS JDAVIS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

When Dimitri Simakis worked on the Pizza Pals Playzone exhibit at Meow Wolf Convergence Station in Denver, he already had the idea for his first film. “The Rainbow Bridge” is Simakis’s first film. “The Rainbow Bridge” was written, directed, edited and composed by Dimitri Simakis. It was produced by Simakis’s wife, filmmaker Suki-Rose and producer Michael Scott. The cinematography was by Seannie Bryan and production design was by Courtney Andujar & Hillary Andujar. The film stars Thu Tran, Heather

It’s a short film about a pet owner Tina (played by Thu Tran) who embarks on a fantastic process to connect with her terminally ill dog MeeMoo (voiced by rap artist Fat Tony). “It was something like between 12 and 15 years ago, I just had an idea,” Simakis said about “The Rainbow Bridge.” He described knowing that he wanted to do a film and that he wanted Tran in that film. Simakis also knew that he wanted to make a fantasy film at that time. SEE ARTIST, P7

However, attendees noted that there are fewer creek access points along the south side of the creek, and hoped that moving tubers to that side would force them to make longer and fewer trips. Plus, it’d free up the north trail for those who want to access City Hall, the Golden History Museum and other amenities along 10th Street, they described. Another recurring theme among attendees’ comments was outfitters, with some wanting them to be banned or have their tube rental numbers limited. Others recommended the outfitters be required to participate in regular clean-ups

The City of Golden plans to reduce the number of Clear Creek access points downtown by installing gates and/or fencing ahead of the 2024 tubing season. There are about 40 access points in city limits, and Golden staff members want to close 25 of them.

having more bilingual signs and getting more public feedback before implementing a reservation system. Building on summer 2023

As city staff has stated before, several measures introduced in 2023 were very successful, such as the expanded shuttle service for tubers, widening sections of the north trail and increasing staff presence along the creek. It also increased its social media messaging about the creek; increased parking citations and fine amounts; and started weekly clean-ups along the corridor.

There were some hiccups, though. Despite increased enforcement, the city saw major compliance issues with parking and with creekside behavior. Plus, the RFIDchipped stickers the city introduced for data collection didn’t always stick on the tubes. Vargo said that, for 2024, the city’s considering putting RFID chips inside the outfitters’ tubes and then having either wristbands or luggage tags for people who bring their own tubes. Golden is also planning to widen the north trail near the RV park, which Vargo described as “one of the last bottlenecks” along the corridor. Along with closing off 25 of the city’s 40-some access points, the beach area would be reconfigured. The sand would be removed, and the area would be filled with colored steps, climbing boulders and an ADA accessible concrete pad. The shoreline would be reestablished and the existing vegetation preserved, staff members described. Finally, regarding parking, Vargo said Golden plans to hire a company to manage all downtown parking lots and garages. City Council’s set to discuss an agreement with Interstate Parking of Colorado at a Jan. 23 work session. The company currently manages parking for several Colorado municipalities, including Morrison. If Golden approves an agreement in February, Interstate Parking would take over parking enforcement in April, which Vargo said would free up the city personnel to address other issues over the summer. Also, by having all downtown Golden under one parking vendor rather than several, it’d be easier for locals and visitors to park and pay. The city has heard numerous complaints about residents having to put their information in every time. But, Vargo described how, under Interstate Parking’s system, residents would only have to register their vehicle once and then they’d have two hours of free parking anywhere downtown. ARTIST FROM PAGE 5

The idea remained in Simakis’ head while he worked on the Meow Wolf exhibit. In fact, anyone who has visited the Pizza Pals Playzone will see the similarities in “The Rainbow Bridge.” Simakis explains that those similarities are there because he had a similar goal for the film as he did for the exhibit: immersion. And he wanted it on both sides of the camera. “Bring immersion on the side of the performers who are on set that day, the crew and just everyone feeling like those spaces are real,” he said. “But of course, for the audience.” Simakis said his goal was to get the audience to ask themselves questions. “Oh, this place, is that real? What’s going on?” Simakis went on to say that he wanted the film to “feel lived in and authentic in that way, even if it’s fantastical.” To achieve this immersion, Simakis put the same attention to detail into both his Meow Wolf exhibit and the film. “I kept thinking, if you walk through this room (Pizza Pals Playzone), or watch this short film (“The Rainbow Bridge”), once walk through the room for five seconds, or you watch the film a couple times, I want it to be the same result which is that there’s something for you on every level,” Simakis said. The film and the exhibit have so much embedded content that the viewer finds more meaning as they sit in or watch the projects. “So adding jokes [(to the film) that nobody’s reading and references, the quantum wellness questionnaire, it’s all real,” Simakis explained. These elements may be missed the first time viewing “The Rainbow Bridge,” but they are things people will see after viewing the short film each time, Simakis said. According to Simakis, attention to detail is what makes the immersion

possible. The details also made him work overtime at building the worlds. “How can I do as much as possible in the time that I have by just building, designing and cranking out poster after poster after poster,” Simakis said. “You don’t see probably 60% of the posters at all. They’re either too small, or they’re on one side of the room. It’s fine, because I knew there was going to be more than enough details, but I wanted to have it all there so that the set felt lived in and it felt authentic.” The process of building the “Rainbow Bridge” sets differed from the Pizza Pals Playzone due mainly to one factor, COVID. “Working on Meow Wolf was something that we were doing during mostly COVID,” Simakis said. He revealed that planning took place as early as 2017, but the building happened in 2020. “My wife and I moved a couple of hours outside of LA since then to a mountain town where it’s just very cozy and quiet,” he said. “Being able to be alone with your thoughts while worldbuilding, is like the most pure form of art.” According to Simakis, the Pizza Pals world was also a challenge because of permanence. “The permanence of Pizza Pals made it challenging, but that was also okay,” Simakis said. “That’s a mountain to climb. Somebody walking through for five seconds, or somebody taking a look at every single aspect of artwork for two hours are going to notice the same thing.” Simakis said the viewers would notice Easter eggs, or references to other things in pop culture, science and other artworks. “Film is no different,” Simakis said. “I have to make the footage. I have to create the world otherwise, it’s going to be small and I don’t want that. It was amazing how much the film and Meow Wolf exhibit overlap. The mentality of the film almost felt like an extension of making an immersive space in that way.”

Simakis said the hardest part of the “Rainbow Bridge” process was letting go of the sets. Simakis is not done with building these intricate worlds and visual storytelling via film. He and his wife Suki Rose have plans for a featurelength film. “We’re working on the script now for a feature of Rainbow Bridge because we don’t want to say goodbye to these characters yet,” he said. “We’re still in love with them.” “The Rainbow Bridge” premiered Jan. 22 at Sundance Film Festival. Tips to driving in snowy and icy conditions in Colorado conditions,” McKinley said.

BY ELISABETH SLAY ESLAY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Prepare the vehicle

Colorado AAA encourages drivers to test their batteries and electrical systems, check all fluid levels, including antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid and engine oil and make sure all lights operate properly. Additionally, AAA advises people to inspect their tires, brakes, windshields and windshield wiper fluid. “Remember, too, that four-wheel drive does not mean four-wheel stop. We’ve had to winch out many topof-the-line trucks and SUVs, many equipped with winter tires, simply because their drivers were going too fast for the conditions,” McKinley said. “Still, as with any storm, the ma-

jority of our calls were related to dead batteries, flat tires and engine operability, and most of those were from folks who were already safe at home.” Keep an emergency kit

For those unlucky enough to end up stranded, whether by sliding off the road or getting stuck in traffic during a closure, Colorado AAA encourages drivers to keep an emergency kit in their cars. “Keep an emergency kit in your car with tire chains, abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, small shovel, flashlight with extra batteries, ice scraper, rags or paper towels, flares or other warning devices, booster cables and a first aid kit,” Colorado AAA said. Drivers should bring blankets, jack-

ets, hats and gloves for themselves and passengers. People should also pack water and snacks, such as energy bars, and bring pet food if they’re traveling with four-legged friends. “Finally, remember that an ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure. Your battery likely tried to warn you it wasn’t up to the task of starting your engine in sub-zero temperatures, likely through dimming headlights or sluggish starts in warmer weather,” McKinley said. McKinley said by addressing issues drivers will be more prepared for the conditions and any emergency situations they may accrue. “By addressing all those issues when they first come up, you can help make our roads safer, and significantly reduce your odds of needing to call for assistance in dangerous

With colder temperatures comes snow blanketing the streets. The roads can be slippery and dangerous for Colorado drivers – new and native to the state. Experts say it’s important to be prepared for the difficult task of driving in the winter. Colorado AAA says following a few tips can help keep drivers safe when traveling in the harsh winter climate. “The first sustained, major weather event is always a useful reminder to Coloradans, regardless of whether you grew up here or if you’re new to town, to brush up on winter driving fundamentals: Slow down, don’t tailgate, and don’t slam on the gas or brakes,” Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs, said.

When driving on icy roads, Colorado AAA advises that people slow down and be careful when accelerating, turning or braking, doing all gradually. “Adjust your speed to the road conditions and leave yourself ample room to stop. Allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you,” the company advises. People also shouldn’t tailgate, they need to watch the traffic ahead of them, avoid unnecessarily changing lanes and use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses. “Black ice typically forms first in shaded areas of the roadway and on bridges and overpasses that freeze first and melt last,” McKinley said. “Although the road leading up to a bridge may be fine, the bridge itself could be a sheet of ice.” Crystal Essman, a crime prevention specialist for Englewood Police Department, said it’s important for people to make sure they slow down and increase their distance from other cars. “Increase your following distance enough so that you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you,” Essman said. “Don’t crowd a snowplow. Snow plows travel slowly, make wide turns, stop often, overlap lanes and exit the road frequently.” She also encourages people to make sure their children are secure in the proper car seat and that those seats are installed correctly.

Teens to take 911 calls as a county scrambles for dispatchers BY ERICA BREUNLIN THE COLORADO SUN

One of the first lessons Scott Brettell teaches his high school students is the importance of being last. The last person to stay with someone through their last moments — even if only over the phone. “You might be the last person that person ever gets to talk to,” Brettell told his students during a recent 911 dispatching class at Calhan Public High School near Colorado Springs. “I’ve spent time with people in their last breaths, sometimes on the highway, sometimes in their home. It just depends. It’s sad, but I’m actually thankful that I was able to be there for them to have someone there as they passed away.” Brettell and about a dozen stu-

dents are pioneering a new emergency telecommunications course in Calhan School District RJ-1 that gives students an entryway into a dispatch job they can pursue immediately after high school. The program comes at a time El Paso County is desperately searching for more dispatchers. It is among the latest efforts by rural school districts to tap into a pipeline of young people who can step into emergency response roles and help their communities cut down on the time it takes to connect callers with lifesaving help. Other schools in both rural and metro parts of the state have rolled out their own programs in recent years to introduce students to careers in emergency response and stem workforce shortages: At two remote schools in Las Animas

County, students have learned how to become emergency medical responders while Denver high schoolers have spent class time practicing CPR and checking blood pressure in preparation to work as emergency medical technicians. In Calhan and other area districts, the focus is on the very first step in the minute-by-minute frenzy to keep someone alive and send them help: listening to their panic-filled pleas after they dial 911. Through a broadcast device, Calhan School District — which has nearly 440 students in preschool through 12th grade — is expanding access to its 911 dispatching class to neighboring districts, Colorado Springs School District 11 and Miami-Yoder School District 60-JT. Nearby Ellicott School District 22 is also offering a 911 dispatching

course and enabling students from Peyton School District 23JT to tune into each instruction. The courses train students to become certified to take calls in a dispatch center, walking them through the procedures and protocols they need to calmly talk to a person in distress and direct emergency responders to a crisis. A certification takes 40 hours to complete, with students from each district chipping away at that requirement through two hours of class time each week. Students will also learn customer service skills anchored by a sense of empathy, said Brettell, who reinforces to his class that they “have to be ‘Chick-fil-A courteous’ to these people.” SEE DISPATCHERS, P10

“These are going to be people having the worst day of their life,” Brettell, who doubles as Calhan School District’s school security officer, tells his students. “And you are going to be the one person that holds it all together for them and you are going to be the person that gets them help as soon as possible. But you also have to be the person that under really stressful situations is going to have to understand that you have to be cool, calm and collected and keep your composure through the worst of the circumstances.” Brettell worked for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for about 16 years, including running a work release program, patrolling and operating drones to locate missing people. Now as a teacher, he wants to both equip students with the basic information they will need to seamlessly deploy emergency resources and help them develop the endurance necessary to think clearly in a high-stress, high-stakes environment. “Even though people are calling you on their worst day,” Brettell told his students, “the objective in dispatching is to make it go from their worst day to as best of a good day as possible.” Other times in class, Brettell opens up about his own experiences with saving lives on the job or comforting someone he knew he was losing.

January 25, 2024Jan He held their hand. He talked to them. He told them everything is going to be OK. He watched their chest rise and fall one more time. “It sucks, but at least I got to be there to do it,” Brettell said. “If I was in a car accident and dying, I would hope that there’d be someone there to at least spend it with me, not be alone.” Katelynn Tatman, a junior at Calhan Public High School, enrolled in the 911 dispatcher class because of her lifelong interest in criminal justice and an ambition to become a criminal profiler to help solve crimes by better understanding the psychology of offenders. But at 18, she’s also getting mentally prepared for what she anticipates would be a demanding, emotionally wrenching job. “I think with dispatching it’s probably one of those jobs where you’re going to have to take a step back and take some time for yourself because it’s going to be stressful,” Tatman said. “I know that before even taking the class.” Phoenix Fail, a sophomore, hopes to work as a dispatcher in college while studying to become a forensic pathologist “This can apply to you in real life, not just like a job,” Phoenix, 16, said. “This can apply to friends if they’re going through something.” Colorado Springs’ 911 Communications Center has long struggled to keep a full staff, with nearly 30 vacancies in October, according to The Gazette. The chronic shortages mean that instead of having 15 employees ready to take calls during the busiest times of the day —

like the National Emergency Number Association standards recommend for that particular center — only seven or eight workers manned phones during those periods in the fall. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has 13 openings out of 60 dispatch positions, with some candidates working their way through the hiring process, according to spokesperson Sergeant Marc Miller. Call takers at Colorado Springs’ 911 Communications Center earn a yearly salary of about $57,680, which is one reason educators in Calhan and adjacent districts say dispatching is a promising option both for students who need a job while earning a college degree and for those who don’t necessarily look at college as their next step after high school. Calhan Superintendent Dave Slothower started to see the potential in bringing a 911 dispatching class to his small district about a year ago, when he joined a group of local superintendents on a trip to Las Vegas to attend a conference focused on career and technical education. While there, Slothower visited Veterans Tribute Career and Technical Academy, where high schoolers can get a taste of a variety of public service fields, such as law enforcement, criminal justice and 911 dispatch. “We were alerted to the fact that there’s a whole career and technical education pathway that we really hadn’t even explored,” Slothower said. “I think this is something we can replicate or should replicate. It’s a viable

career path for our kids that they may be interested in. This is the beauty of it, is that you get the chance to explore these things right now while you’re still in high school.” Calhan School District is continuing to develop its dispatch program with plans to construct a simulated call center where students can get firsthand experience with software used by dispatchers and practice fielding calls in a high-pressure environment. Meanwhile, about 30 miles southeast of Calhan, students in Miami-Yoder School District are also learning about the mechanics of dispatching from Brettell, using technology to watch his lessons remotely. Their criminal justice teacher, Kevin Jaramillo, who also works as the district’s school resource officer, will get certified in dispatching later this school year and begin teaching students about handling 911 calls in future semesters. High schoolers can quickly pick up the demands of 911 dispatching because they’ve grown up with technology and are used to “a fast-paced life,” said Jaramillo, who previously worked for the La Junta Police Department for nearly five years. “Their minds are already going 100 miles an hour,” he said. “All they need is a little help tweaking and adjusting their mindset, and that’s to handle the screaming and maybe hearing gunshots on the phone.” This story was printed through a news sharing agreement with The Colorado Sun, a journalist-owned nonprofit based in Denver that covers the state.

VOICES Big horses and good theater in Golden

L

ast week I covered the upcoming UllrGrass festival happening this weekend, but there is more going on downtown that you can enjoy. All month long, Golden has been hosting Western Heritage Days, and this Saturday, Jan. 27 is the last day to take part in a few of the activities. If you like horses…Let me rephrase that, if you like really big, huge horses, then you might want to check out what’s happening from 9-10 a.m. in front of the Old Capitol Grill, on the corner of 12th Street and Washington Avenue. There will be a team of Clydesdale horses there and you can snap a few photos with them. It’s one thing seeing these majestic creatures on television pulling a beer wagon, but to see them up close and personal is really an aweinspiring experience. Even though we all think of big draft horses as powerful teams that pull heavy wagons, these were actually the horses knights rode into combat centuries ago. Yeah, if I were standing in a field holding a wood-handled spear and saw a bunch of these charging at me with guys in steel armor on top of them, I’d probably find out just how fast I could run the other direction. That had to be terrifying. And as long as you are downtown, you can also take a free ride

in a horse drawn wagon from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. that will be departing every 15 minutes from the same location. These rides will all have a history theme, so you can find out more about our Old West heritage here in Golden. There’s Misery in

Golden. OK, that sounds a bit grim, but it’s actually, it’s the name of the current offering at our own Miners Alley Performing Arts Center. This is a play called “Misery” by William Goldman and it’s based on the novel by Stephen King. The online description says “It’s a story about Paul Sheldon, who is ‘rescued’ from a horrible car crash by his No. 1 fan, nurse Annie Wilkes. Annie takes the famous romance novelist prisoner and insists on treating him at her rural Colorado home. Then she reads his latest manuscript, and discovers he’s killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain! When Annie forces Paul to do some major rewrites, Paul must write as though his life depends on it. Because it does. A

chilling edge-of-your-seat thriller that balances dark comedy with psychodrama.” Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? Keep in mind that this is a show that’s recommended for people 17 years old and up, so it’s not a kid’s program. It runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinee shows at 2 p.m. from now through February 11. Tickets run from $32 to $47 with discounts available for Students and Seniors 60+. This show will be at the new Performing Arts Center location at 1100 Miners Alley in Golden in the old Meyer Hardware building. Now, just so the kids aren’t left out, there is also a show opening this weekend as part of the Miners Alley Theater for Young Audiences. It’s a musical written by Heather Beasley, Richie Cannaday and Edie Carey called “Amelia’s Big Idea.” This one is a story about ten-year-old Amelia Smart who has the wonderful idea of building a dog park. Her dog Gadget needs a safe and fun place to play but she finds out that this big idea to transform her hometown is going to take a lot of work. She’s going to need some help from several of the town’s folk including the Mayor, Librarian, Mr. Delivery and a slew of others.

Performances of this production will be on Saturdays from now through Feb. 10, then it picks up again with shows from March 9 -April 6. There will be two matinee performances on each Saturday, one at 11 a.m. and another at 1 p.m. Tickets for these shows run $15 for everyone. You can find out more about these productions as well as order tickets by going to www.minersalley.com or by calling the box office at (303) 935-3044. We are just starting to get into the heart of winter right now, but these are a few things to keep you entertained during a time when most events have kind of gone into hibernation for a while. Here in Golden, we have something fun and interesting going on, even when it’s hitting 10 degrees below zero. Yes, that was a little bit more of an adventure than I’d care to repeat too often this year. Let’s hope Ullr brings some snow but keeps us above zero. Forgoing fireworks is a Golden opportunity to start a new Fourth of July tradition

S

ince moving to Golden in 2016, one of my Fourth of July traditions has been walking to the nearby park that overlooks downtown to watch the fireworks. Even this past year, when the city rescheduled the fireworks for Sept. 1, I made my usual trek over to the park to watch the end-of-summer display. The best part of the whole experience – aside from avoiding all

the traffic downtown – is seeing my neighbors out there too; folks bringing their lawn chairs and snacks, and children running around while we were waiting for the show to start. It’s always been Corinne Westeman a fun experience,

and even before moving to Golden, fireworks have been a huge part of my Fourth of July traditions and memories. That said, I’m honestly OK that the city’s forgoing fireworks indefinitely. I agree that summers are getting drier and the creek’s getting more crowded, so why spend $40,000$45,000 on something that’s not a guarantee and only draws more people? Well, without fireworks, what can

Golden do instead? It doesn’t sound like anything’s confirmed yet, but the councilors discussed expanding the current Lions Club event and/or reviving the children’s bike parade. I think it’d be cool to do something unique to Golden. Everybody else does fireworks and bike parades and ice cream socials. If we’re going to forgo fireworks, let’s SEE WESTEMAN, P13

start a fun, new tradition — something this generation of youngsters will treasure as a special Fourth of July memory, the way many of us do with fireworks. The councilors gave some loose criteria for what they’d want to see replace fireworks: something that celebrates the country, has a smalltown feel and won’t encourage people to linger after dark and cause drama. So, I have three ideas: One: I think one councilor suggested hiring dance troupes to perform at the Lions Club event. Sounds great! There are plenty of talented locals who perform highquality dance numbers, like at last month’s Candlelight Walk. It could be even cooler if Golden had its own dance troupe just for the Fourth of July. Call it the Stars & Stripes or the Golden Fireworks. Open it up to all ages and skill levels. Have people perform dances that encapsulate America’s history and subcultures. Two: Have a costume contest. Encourage people to wear clothes from various periods of American history. Throw in a $500 first-place prize, and I bet every reenactor and cosplayer across the city would bust out their 1790s tricorn hats and

1860s bonnets. I know local families love dressing up for the Golden Bike Cruise and Halloween, so maybe they’d bust out their 1960s tie-dye or 1970s bell-bottoms for coordinated family costumes. Three: Host something at local parks. Without fireworks, folks like me will miss that community experience of meeting each other at the park to watch the show. So, maybe have an ice cream social or something that replicates that experience. Yes, ice cream socials aren’t exactly unique, but maybe the city could do them round-robin style and encourage people to bike to all of them with the final one at the Lions Club event. Look, I know there will be plenty of people who will miss the fireworks. If you talk to me on July 5, I might be one of them. But, the decision’s been made, so let’s roll with it. Let’s find something fun that celebrates the country and creates special memories for the youngsters. And if it’s unique to Golden, then cool beans! Volunteers say community orchestras create more connected, well-rounded society BY TAYLER SHAW TSHAW@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

O

n a cold January night in a Wheat Ridge church, a large group of people traveled back in time to the 1800s — not by using new technology, but rather musical instruments. Brows furrowed and fingers fluttered as the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, made up of roughly 70 volunteer musicians, perform a composition from an 1800s opera, “Carmen.” The community orchestra is one of many in the metro Denver region that offer people an opportunity to bring their musical talents and passions to life regardless of their profession, age or background. Despite the time and work it takes to execute exceptional performances, volunteer musicians through-

out the metro region say the effort is worth it, highlighting the value of music for themselves and their communities. Chris Loring, principal violist of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, said the orchestra brings together people who share the same passion that they’ve all had since first picking up their instruments. “And now, here we are. We have this talent that we can share with each other, and that’s really fulfilling just to put it all together and be artistic and have fun,” she said. “It’s a great sense of community.” In the southern metro region of Denver, the Littleton Symphony Orchestra shares a similar goal of upholding community, said Bill Mesa, an assistant principal percussionist in the symphony. “With any community orchestra, they want to be a part of the commu-

nity,” Mesa said. “Not just in it.” Compared to an organization like the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, which dates back to the 1950s, a relatively newer community orchestra in the metro region is the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra, founded in 2000. Katie Smith, principal oboe of the Lone Tree symphony, underlined the importance of having an orchestra in any community, whether it be Jefferson County, Littleton or Lone Tree. “Having arts organizations provides a more well-rounded community as a whole,” Smith said. “It creates a more pleasant community to live in when you have more opportunities for the arts.” The start of lifelong musical careers

For both Loring and Smith, their musical careers started at a young age with playing the piano.

Loring, a 42-year-old pet photographer and private music teacher who lives in Jefferson County, said that in sixth grade, she joined the student orchestra. Out of the roughly 25 students there, no one had signed up to play viola, a string instrument that is slightly larger than a violin and has a deeper sound. The teacher asked who in the room wanted to play viola, leading to an awkward silence, Loring recalled. “This cute boy next to me grabbed my hand, raised it up in the air, and the rest is history,” she said. “From that point forward, I really fell in love with the instrument.” She went on to the University of Northern Colorado and studied viola performance, and today, she helps teach young musicians. “I love teaching for a couple of reasons. No. 1, I can have a hand in developing musicians that are going to come behind me,” Loring said. “These orchestras don’t fill up unless we have students that are learning and growing and developing a passion for something that some people might consider dorky or weird — but these kids are really, really excited about it.” Smith, a 50-year-old Highlands Ranch resident who does project work with Cigna Healthcare as her day job, said her mom was a church musician. “She started me on piano at 5 (years old) and then I apparently kept asking … what instrument I should play if I wanted to play in church,” Smith said. “She said, ‘Please play the oboe.’” Playing the oboe, a woodwind instrument, as a young child would have been a tall task, Smith said, so she initially started by playing the flute. By the end of fifth grade, however, she started the oboe. “I took to the oboe like a duck to water,” she said. Smith got her undergraduate degree in music from the University of Denver, she said. Although she had always intended to be a professional musician, when she got into college, she was encouraged to double major “so that I would at least have something to eat,” she said with a laugh. She got a minor in business and realized she did not want to pursue a professional music career, she said. “I think since I don’t do it as my primary profession, I get more enjoyment out of it as an avocation than a vocation,” Smith said. For Mesa, a 57-year-old Centennial resident, his music career started as a young boy playing drums on coffee cans that his mom discarded, he said. He recalled listening to his dad’s vinyl records that featured lots of

percussion, drawing him to the drums. “The clincher is when I first saw ‘Star Wars,’ and the music just blew me away,” Mesa said. “I thought, ‘Wow. Hear all those drums.’” Eventually, he picked up drums through public schooling and performed through college. However, he did not major in music performance. Rather, he found an interest in accounting and is now an accounting professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Highlighting the ability of community orchestras to connect people, he said some of his former students will attend the Littleton Symphony Orchestra’s concerts and come up to him afterward to catch up. “Those are all community factors. There doesn’t have to be anonymity,” he said about local performances. Discovering community orchestras

From seeing an advertisement to getting a phone call about an opening, the process of getting involved in a community orchestra can look different for everyone. Loring said she first learned about the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra when she moved to Golden around 2008, saying she saw an advertisement for it. She had been looking for an orchestra to join and had heard great things about it, she said. “It’s been around for decades, and many of the people who play in this orchestra have been here for decades,” she said. “When I joined, this was known as one of … the premier orchestras in terms of community orchestras for this area.” The orchestra, which musicians have to audition to get into, is made up of roughly 70 people ranging from college-age to post-retirement age, she said. “It’s a really great orchestra full of some insanely talented musicians. We have played repertoire that you hear from the professional symphony,” she said. SEE MUSIC, P16

Smith got involved in the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra around 2006 after hearing about it through a friend. When she started playing with the orchestra, they performed in a church, she recalled. Now, they perform in the Lone Tree Arts Center, which she said is an amazing opportunity that not every community orchestra has. She estimated roughly 60 musicians are in the orchestra, which requires an audition to join. “We provide excellent entertainment for the community and it’s done in a manner where it isn’t haughty,” she said. “It’s presented in a way that people really feel encouraged to go and I think they really enjoy the opportunity and they enjoy the performance.” Smith described making music with others in the symphony as both beautiful and challenging, especially if the musicians have different skill sets. “You have to be patient,” she said. Mesa got connected to the Littleton Symphony Orchestra when he got a phone call from the thenprincipal percussionist asking if he would be interested in filling in because the orchestra needed an extra person. Some time afterward, Mesa auditioned and became a regular member of the symphony about 17 years ago. “It challenged me more. It upped my game and playing because the players in the orchestra are remarkable, high caliber,” he said. “You can get some exceptional performances from the community orchestras in the Denver metro area that you live by, and you’re supporting the community.” The vision of the Littleton Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of about 50 musicians ranging in age from early 20s to upper 70s, is to provide performances that elevate the human spirit, Mesa said. “We pursue that relentlessly, knowing it’s something we’ll never accomplish,” he said. “That’s what drew me into the orchestra.” The value of music and community

Although volunteering in the symphony orchestra requires hours of practice and rehearsal, one of the most rewarding factors is making music with friends, Mesa said.

Violinists in the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra rehearsing on Jan. 8, 2024.

“There’s nothing quite like that type of effort when you have this number of people and when (a) performance pops and it sparks. And you can feel that from the audience because there is some communication between the orchestra and the audience,” he said. “It’s the best. You can’t replace it.” Community orchestras are valuable because they provide a music outlet for residents who may not have the budget to pay the higherpriced tickets to see a professional orchestra, Mesa said. “Just give the orchestra a chance,” he said. “It’s fun, and it’s live music … something we’re, I think, missing nowadays.” Smith said the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra is fortunate because it has had the support of the city since the very beginning. Similar to Mesa, Smith said being a part of any orchestra is a unique, special experience. “I think the most rewarding part of any performance is knowing that you’ve provided not only (an) escape in what you’re doing and what you’re creating — you’re also creating an experience for somebody else,” Smith said. “I think the most important thing for folks to know is that we’re here,” she added. “You don’t necessarily have to go downtown to hear the symphony.” The most challenging part about being in a community orchestra is that the volunteer musicians have

busy lives, Loring said. Yet, the time and effort is worth it. “As a musician, the thing that I love about working in a group like this and performing is that this is the only way we get to bring to life some of the art that’s been given to this world,” Loring said. “With classical music, we have composers who wrote these incredible manuscripts, and they wrote these ideas and these concepts and these stories in notes. “And it’s up to us to translate that, and to create a story and to tell that through our music using our talents. And that, to me, is the coolest part,” she added.

Community orchestras are important to the local community for a number of reasons, Loring said. One of them is that the orchestras provide activities for residents to enjoy. Another is the opportunity the orchestra provides to the volunteers, giving musicians a chance to continue to play their instrument when maybe they otherwise would not have. “How many people stop playing because they don’t have those opportunities?” Loring said. “Orchestras, like the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, give that to people. And that’s really, really important for the community.”

Prismajic casts a spell at Colorado Mills

G

etting lost in a work of art is an experience that has been happening to people for centuries, and artists are always looking for new ways to get the public invested in their work. The creatives behind Prismajic have taken this urge and supersized it in its new location in Colorado Mills, 14500 W. Colfax, Suite 359, in Lakewood. “Prismajic is an immersive adventure that marries art and cutting-edge technology to transport visitors to the enchanting and surreal forest inhabited by Shiki, a mystical yeti and leader of the Spirits of the Forest,” wrote Lisa Fox, marketing manager, in an email interview. Co-founded by Eric Jaenike and Jennifer Mosquera, the organization has been around since 2013, but the Lakewood location is its first permanent home. According to provided information, Prismajic started building immersive experiences for corporate clients in 2013 under the name Artistry Events & Design. Even while doing that work, the aim was to open true mesmerizing experiences that could be enjoyed by everyone. They got closer to that goal with the 2019 opening of Natura Obscura, their first immersive experience, and afterward, Shiki Dreams came into existence. It began as a small pop-up and was named the 4th Best Immersive Experience in the country by USA Today

We loved the concept and wanted to be part of it,” Fox wrote. “The location provides us not only with proximity to the 40 West Arts District but also offers convenient access to metro Denver, Boulder, Ft. Sure, there are curated craft cocktails, mocktails, and light bites, but that’s not all. With a theme of European alleyways, nature and mystical owls, there’s also a stage for music, cocktail classes, poetry readings and other special events. Virtuosic organ music comes to Lakewood

You might think you know what you’ll get with organ music, but whatever you’re expecting, it’s not how Cameron Carpenter does it. The world-renowned virtuoso composer and performer is bringing his unique approach to the instrument to the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2. A graduate of New York’s famous Julliard School, Carpenter has spent nearly two decades mesmerizing audiences with his uniquely contemporary style of playing such a traditional instrument. For his Lakewood performance, Carpenter will be drawing from the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Find information and tickets at www. Lakewood.org/LCCPresents. Find the missing diamond at The Fort

Guests at The Fort, 19192 Colorado 8 in Morrison, will have a little whodunnit with their dinner at the “Now You See It, Now You Don’t,” masqueradethemed murder mystery dinner event. The party will be held at 6 p.m. on Fri-

day, Jan. 26. Attendees will be treated to a fourcourse prix-fixe meal featuring menu favorites and as to the mystery portion of the evening, it centers on the Stomach of the Ocean Diamond, which has somehow gone missing. It’s up to the diners and a detective to find the vanished gem before it’s too late. Masquerade masks will be available at check-in. Clarke’s Concert of the Week — Isaiah Rashad: Cilvia Demo 10 Year Anniversary Tour at the Fillmore

No musician can know when (or if) their breakthrough moment will happen. For Chattanooga, Tennessee, rapper Isaiah Rashad, his moment came with the release of his debut Top Dog Entertainment project, “Cilvia Demo.” The artist joined labelmates like Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and SZA as a talent to watch, and in the ensuing years he’s absolutely lived up to the EP’s potential. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the release, Rashad will be stopping by the Fillmore Auditorium, 1510 Clarkson St. in Denver, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27. This is an opportunity to hear one of rap’s strongest and most slept-on voices. I recommend you take it. Get tickets at www.livenation.com. From illusion to delusion

T

o make good decisions unfettered by illusions, we must act on clear, honest, factual information. At times though, we ignore the truth in front of our nose and forge ahead despite ominous flashing caution and warning signs. Think of a person or group you thought would never do you harm but did or had your best interests at heart but didn’t. How did you feel when you realized that? Angry? Hurt? Snookered? Betrayed? If you’ve been played the fool, you not only might harbor those feelings, you might also feel demeaned, used, or manipulated like a puppet on a string. Understandably so

given that no one, I presume, wants to be used, to be another’s puppet. When the truth is revealed, it can be akin to ripping a bandage off raw skin because it invariably touches on sensitive core areas like religious, political, social, or Columnist personal. Of them, the personal can be the most difficult to swallow because it

can reveal something uncomfortable about you. It’s important to distinguish between illusion and delusion. While they mean similar things—something false or misleading—delusion is a mental disorder that is often a symptom of psychosis. It involves the inability to tell what is real from what is unreal and truth from falsehoods. Illusion, on the other hand, can be not only more benign, it can be useful at times. After all, if we knew all that could be known about another, we’d probably shrink back in disgust or horror. We’ve coined a term for that: TMI. Frighteningly though, sometimes we know the truth but opt to deny or disregard it. Why do we do that? Why create and hold fast to illusions and live out parts—if not all—of our life in accordance with them?

Myopia is both a physical and psychological condition. While eyewear can facilitate correcting the physical limitation, it takes conscious will to step from the world of myopic illusion. If we fail to do that, we fall into the trap of believing that our perceptions and worldviews are the only valid ones. To that the nineteenth-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer stated, “Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.” A tenet of Buddhism is that we spend much of our earthly time living lives of illusion, seeing all that surrounds us, from the immediate to the greater universe, as substantial, ultimate reality. It’s hard for the Western mind to wrap itself around that as well as the Buddhist concept of emptiness. Reason suggests that if something is empty, there’s nothing in or to it. But that is not necessarily the case. An uncovered empty bottle is not empty. Rather, it’s filled with the same benign—hopefully—air that you’re breathing. But a sealed bottle that is similarly empty

might be filled with a noxious gas. That image can serve as a metaphor about the negativity we fill our minds with and help us take stock of our illusions. Some are benign; others malodorous. We generally believe the stories we tell ourselves about others or situations, both positive and negative, are true. But that can be self-delusional because sometimes we discover we were wrong, what we believed was erroneous. Our healthy nature surfaces when we admit the errancy of our perspective and change it. The unhealthy aspect appears when we obstinately remain steadfast despite irrefutable evidence to the contrary. That is when illusion can morph into pathological delusion, which often manifests or expresses itself as bitterness, anger, or rage. That has ramifications at the personal and interpersonal levels and at the macro, societal level. To our detriment, we sometimes don blinders and concoct fantastical fictions in order to absolve our consciences of acknowledging the unpleasant truth of a person

or group so to continue covering for and supporting them by ignoring or explaining away their excesses. As it is with the Buddhist teachings on illusion and emptiness, it can be hard for the Western mind to grasp the Buddhist concept of impermanence, although the impermanent nature of phenomena might be easier to grasp because we know nothing lasts forever. Including us. One day each person taking breaths in 2024 will be gone. And all that will remain is that which we leave behind, primarily our legacy and our story replete with a chronicle of our behaviors and choices. If we’d keep that forefront in our minds, our lives would be not only more authentic and reality based, they’d be less illusionary. We’d make wiser choices, maybe sleep better, and this world would be in a far better place. A mid-January snowstorm meant frigid temperatures and dangerous driving for Clear Creek County residents and tourists, but skiers and snowboarders are smiling, according to Loveland Ski Area Marketing Manager Dustin Schaefer. “Skiing and snowboarding conditions are just amazing up here, lots of powder, lots of smiles, people are pretty stoked on the snow that just came in,” Schaefer said. The ski patrol is currently working to open lifts four, eight, and nine in the coming days as snow and equipment allows, Schaefer said. “It’s looking like it’s going to be a good season,” he added. Orediggers still No. 1 in RMAC regular-season title race Mines women’s basketball falls to Regis, bounces back against UCCS BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team hadn’t lost a game in 64 days, since falling to No. 24 Texas Woman’s Nov. 16 in Denton, Texas. However, No. 6 Mines put its 12game win streak to the test in backto-back home games Jan. 19-20, facing off against the second- and third-place teams in the RMAC regular-season title race. The Orediggers fell to the Rangers 93-74 on Jan. 19 but bounced back the next night and took down the Mountain Lions 77-68. Going into the Jan. 23 home game against MSU Denver, Mines was 15-2 overall and 10-1 in conference play. The Orediggers were still No. 1 in the RMAC standings as of Jan. 21, as the Rangers have lost two conference games to the Orediggers’ one. Senior guard Ashley Steffeck continues to be an offensive powerhouse for the Orediggers, racking up 28 points against Regis and a career-high 35 points against UCCS. She also made all 25 free throw attempts during the Jan. 1920 games, putting her in fifth place “Ashley’s just a competitor,” Coach Brittany Simpson said after the Jan. 19 Regis game. “She’ll play to the last minute.” After Regis beat Mines in last year’s RMAC tournament championship game, Simpson said that she at least had a chip on her shoulder and hoped to get the W in this year’s lone regular-season meeting. However, the Rangers’ sharpshooting put the Orediggers on the backfoot early and, as Simpson described, never really recovered. SEE BASKETBALL, P23

Colorado School of Mines sophomore guard Jenna Siebert drives into the lane during the Jan. 19 home game against Regis. Siebert had 11 points, four rebounds and one assist during the game.

“We just were not us tonight,” she continued. “We didn’t play our system. … Regis is a good team (and) they were making shots tonight. But we just were really undisciplined in what we do, which was disappointing.” While the Rangers and the Orediggers aren’t exactly rivals, Simpson said, but Regis has now won the teams’ last three meetings. She anticipated seeing them again in this year’s conference tournament. Simpson added that she didn’t make any adjustments before playing UCCS, adding, “We’re going to have to play our system. We’re going to have to do what we do.” Ultimately, Orediggers outlasted the Mountain Lions during the Jan. 20 fast-paced battle at the baskets. Steffeck finished the night with 35 points — the second-most by an Oredigger in program history, Mines Athletics confirmed. She tied Laura Marshall for second place, while Taylor Helbig and Denali Pinto are tied for the top spot with 38 points each in a single game. Steffeck also now holds fifth place in program history for free throws made in a season, according to Mines Athletics. As of Jan. 20, she had 112 free throws for 2023-24. Rounding out the Mines stat sheets against UCCS, senior forward Quincey Baum, senior center Shelby Nichols and freshman guard Emma Sixta had career bests in assists, steals and rebounds, respectively. Senior guard Jessica Rios also showed offensive consistency, scoring the secondmost points for the Orediggers in both weekend games. After the Jan. 23 home game against MSU Denver, Mines will host Western Colorado Jan. 26 before a Feb. 2-3 road trip to Fort Lewis and Adams State. CLAIM YOUR

CHSAA poised to adopt shot clock for 2026 school year BY STEVE SMITH SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

AURORA - The Colorado High School Activities Association is ready for its boys and girls basketball teams to use a shot clock starting in the 2026-2027 season. All that’s left is a vote by its legislative council to amend a basketball committee report and make the rule official. The council meets Jan. 30, at the Douglas County School District Legacy Campus, 10035 S. Peoria St., Lone Tree. It’s the first of two decisionmaking meetings for the council this school year. The association is following a rule put forth by the National Federation of High Schools in 2021. All levels of boys and girls basketball will use a 35-second shot clock. According to the agenda, 27 state associations use a shot clock in some form or other. Among the advantages are no more stalling, thus reducing the number of possessions in each game, and preparation for players to use a shot clock while playing college ball. The disadvantages are costs to financially strapped districts. The agenda packet pegged the price tag at between $2,500 and $5,000 during a time when school budgets are already tight. Another potential issue is associated costs to train and pay people to run the shot clock. In other business

The council is expected to vote on a proposal to move up the beginning

of the spring sports season by a week. The main reason is longstanding. Teams that qualify for state tournaments, particularly baseball, often play over the Memorial Day weekend, which causes problems for participants, schools and organizers in trying to find ways to host the events. It’s also a common weekend for highschool graduations. One potential issue wouldn’t take place that often. The agenda packet said there will be one more week of so-called “crossover” time between

the winter and spring seasons. The council could add an extra week for football games this season. If approved, it would mean the removal of a bylaw that allowed teams that hosted end-of-summer camps and that didn’t have a bye to schedule a contest within two weeks of the first day of practice. Football practice is due to begin the week of Aug. 11 this year. The agenda packet said adding an extra week to play games will make it easier to schedule game officials. It could also

create one to two bye weeks during the season. The committee could also act on a proposal to cap sub-varsity volleyball team’s number of matches at 23, not including regional and state tournaments. That schedule limit is already in place for varsity teams. The down side, the agenda said, is extra costs for game officials and/or transportation. In girls softball, there’s a proposal to eliminate the double-elimination regional brackets for both class 4A and 5A teams. “With several schools (4A and 5A) playing games on different days, different formats and/or same day, we have created an equity issue for our student-athletes,” the agenda said. Class 3A schools, such as Fort Lupton High School, use the same number of teams in the so-called round of 32, Two teams advance from each regional to the state tournament. The proposal would make the format consistent across all three classifications. Also, the agenda said, host schools that have just one field would not be able to host at their home site. There is a financial impact, especially for schools that play on two days. “If we eliminate the two-day option, there will be less of a financial impact for all traveling schools.,” the agenda said “This also helps those schools who have to rent a complex to host their regional tournament.” The proposal did not get a vote to move out of the association’s softball committee.

SUPPORT LOCAL JOURNALISM

DON’T LET YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPERS GO SILENT.

This year, even more than ever before, the news is in crisis. More than 17,000 news media jobs were cut just by June, at national and local outlets including at some of the biggest names like NPR, The Texas Tribune and Gannett. In fact, newsroom layoffs are up 20% from last year. Some of these outlets laid off more than 10% of their staff in the last few months — even as we head into a critical election year. These are devastating numbers. But all is not lost. Many local and independent newsrooms continue to launch across the country. With your contributions and subscriber memberships, small newsrooms like ours continue to grow, adding new journalists and expanding reporting and investigations. We’re committed to bringing the news to Coloradans. That’s because you deserve access to local, independent journalism that keeps you connected and informed — especially during challenging times. This is #newsCOneeds.
