Jefferson County considers closing Lookout Mountain Road at night Locals concerned about emergency access, pushing illegal activity to neighborhoods BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Anyone who’s visited Lookout Mountain Road or the nearby trails knows how busy the area can be, especially on weekends and/or in the summer. According to Jefferson County Open Space, Lookout Mountain Road is even busier at midnight than it is at 10 a.m. on the weekends. Although the trails and parking areas close an hour after sunset, JCOS confirmed cell phone data, law enforcement contacts, litter,

graffiti and other things indicate there’s a large amount of illegal activity in the area at night. To curb this, the agency and its partners have proposed installing two gates to close the road at night. The gates would close a 4-mile stretch of road that crosses Jeffco and Denver parklands. No residences would be impacted. Several Jeffco Open Space parks, such as White Ranch, have similar gates at trailhead parking lots to prevent people from visiting after park hours. While dozens of Lookout Mountain residents were generally in favor of closing the road overnight, they also were concerned about emergency access, especially during evacuations and snowstorms. Many said at a Dec. 13 stakeholder meeting that Lookout Mountain is their only route home when snow

Some Thoughts About the Future of the MLS in Light of Commission Lawsuits

Sellers, buyers and real estate professionals are all contemplating the future of real estate following the blockbuster verdict (and pending litigation) against the National Association of Realtors and several highprofile real estate franchises, such as RE/MAX. The multi-billion-dollar verdict was in favor of home sellers who questioned why they should be required to compensate agents who represent the buyers of their properties. Shouldn’t buyers pay for their own representation? The verdict seemed to ignore one crucial fact — that the buyers’ agents are not compensated by the seller but by the seller’s agent who agreed to share his commission with any MLS member who procured and represented the buyer. It’s such a crucial aspect of selling real estate. What seller in his right mind would list his or her home with “little old me” if I couldn’t enlist the services of 25,000 other brokers by listing each home on a common database and offering to split my listing commission with them if they brought the buyer? I’ve written about this before. It’s called “cooperation and compensation.”

Each member of the multiple listing service (MLS) agrees to cooperate with every other member, and includes in his MLS listing the amount of his commission that he’s willing to give another member who produces the buyer. It’s a good deal for the buyer. Why hire me as your agent if I don’t have the opportunity to get paid for the listing you fall in love with? The litigants in the NAR lawsuit would like to see buyers sign an agreement to pay me a certain dollar amount if I get them to the closing table on a home they want to buy. Currently, brokers who bring a buyer can expect between 2 and 3 percent of the sale price as compensation. That comes from sharing a 4- to 6percent listing commission earned by the other agent for taking their home to market. It’s much easier to choose the best listing agent based on the services he or she will perform in getting one’s home seen in the best possible light by the greatest number of potential buyers, than it is to choose the best buyer’s agent who is going to do little more than initiate an MLS alert for active listings

which match the buyer’s search criteria, then providing physical access to the listings which that buyer wants to see. The graphic at the bottom of this page describes the multitude of services offered to sellers by Golden Real Estate. Although we provide equally important services to buyers, they are more intangible, such as negotiating for the best price, helping win bidding wars on competitive listings, negotiating inspection resolution, etc. It’s easy to show how well we marketed and sold listings; we can’t show how well we served buyers. The verdict won against NAR and the big brokerage companies may be a “blockbuster,” but it’s hard to envision much changing from how our Denver MLS does business, or how the Colorado Real Estate Commission might modify the seller and buyer listing agreements we’re required to use in our transactions. Let’s start with the state-mandated listing agreement for sellers. For as long as I’ve been a Realtor, it has contained a fields for entering the amount of commission charged by the listing agent and the amount of that commission the agent will offer to brokers who bring the buyer. There’s no pre-filled percentage or dollar amount, and we’re instructed by licensing law and Realtor ethics that there is no standard or customary number to enter in each of those fields. Meanwhile, the MLS has always allowed the listing agent to enter any per-

centage or dollar amount (even $1) as the amount of compensation he or she will offer to other MLS members. So no change is needed there. (Recently, however, the MLS has allowed us to enter $0 instead of $1 in that field.) Meanwhile, on the state-mandated buyer agency agreement, there have always been (as far back as I remember in my two decades of service) fields for entering the amount that the buyer will pay his agent (if anything), and whether he will seek compensation from the seller’s agent, and, failing that, whether or not the buyer will make up the difference of a specific amount of compensation to his or her agent. So, no changes are needed to that form. There may be some disruption in other markets, but not here. Even if sellers are told they don’t have to pay buyers’ agents for their work, I picture every seller wanting to pay their listing agent enough commission to allow the offer of compensation, because failing to do so runs the risk of getting fewer showings and offers.

Jim Smith on Title Insurance:

Like any seasoned listing agent, I have my preferred title companies based on years of experience working with them. I have found the escrow officers of some firms more attentive and better at handling issues that may arise, so I definitely recommend one for my seller to use. I admit that I should remind them it’s their decision and point them to Garry’s website, but a choice based on it would be based solely on price. Then we could talk. Where I think agents go wrong is when they have an in-house title company and they get spiffed for “capturing” a seller for that title company and probably don’t suggest their client shop other companies.

Perhaps you, like me, have yearned to travel the world — the whole world. I remember seeing “Around the World in 80 Days” when it came out, and it made me want to go for it. Thanks to Golden Real Estate’s excellent broker associates, and thanks to modern internet and cellular connectivity, Rita and I are taking the plunge, so-to-speak, and will embark next week on a 122-day world cruise on the Viking Sky (above). We leave from Los Angeles on Jan. 6th and return from London on May 6th. I will not only continue to perform most of my real estate duties (except in-person tasks), including writing this column each week, I will

also publish a daily travelogue which you’re invited to receive by email. I’ll be receiving and responding to voicemail, only answering the phone when I’m ashore, where I can also return calls. I’ll continue to receive all the usual real estate information by email and have access to our MLS, so I will be sufficiently upto-date on the topics I like to write about in this space. Feel free to call or email me about selling or buying a home while I’m away, so I can refer you to the broker associate who I feel best suits you and your needs. closes both Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 40. They asked officials to either ensure the road would be open and plowed when both I-70 and U.S. 40 close or to give residents an access code to open the gates. They were also concerned that closing Lookout Mountain Road would push illegal activity, such as drinking and shooting guns, into the neighborhoods and parking lots outside either gate. Officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office and Golden Police Department said they’d increase patrols in those areas, but asked for residents’ help by reporting any suspicious activity. Mary Ann Bonnell, JCOS visitor services & natural resources director, said preventing overnight activity will help protect the parks’ natural and cultural resources, and make the Lookout Mountain area much safer. She said JCOS and its partners are in the stakeholder-engagement process, talking to residents and other groups that’d be impacted by such a closure. After that, she said the agency would need to have a conceptual design for the gates to take back to stakeholders, but she hoped the agency and its partners could install the gates sometime in 2024. Making the mountain safer

According to Bonnell, if the gates are installed, pedestrians and cyclists would still be able to access the road overnight. However, they’d

have to stay on the road. Bonnell said, in general, motorists using Lookout Mountain Road isn’t the issue. It’s people who pull off the road and park, despite Windy Saddle Park and the surrounding areas being closed. Bonnell said JCOS and its partners have installed signs that people disregard, and barricades that people relocate. Lt. Dan Aten of the Jeffco Sheriff ’s Office described how frequently deputies patrol the area overnight, writing tickets and clearing people out of the parking lots. But, the problem is that more people come in behind the deputies, so the problems just continue, he said. Installing gates would prevent that and have an overall “positive impact,” Aten continued, adding, “The call loads and activity up here have just increased (in recent years).” Regarding gate access, Bonnell said the gates would have a sensor and open if there was a vehicle inside, just in case someone didn’t finish their hike before the gates closed. The gates would also be able to recognize emergency vehicles, and first responders would be able to keep the gates open during emergency evacuations. Residents described dangerous activity on the mountain overnight, including gunfire, with one resident holding up bullets he’s found in his yard. He said overnight road closures would make his neighborhood and the entire Golden area safer. Bonnell acknowledged that illegal gunfire was a major problem, saying that even during the day, deputies and JCOS rangers get calls

Jeffco Open Space and its partners are proposing installing gates along a 4-mile stretch of Lookout Mountain Road that would close after park hours. JCOS personnel said this would help curtail the massive problems they currently see with people loitering in the park areas after hours, including drinking, graffitiing, littering, and COURTESY GRAPHIC illegal gunfire.

Jingle all the way downtown Golden families meet holiday characters at Jingle on the Avenue BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Oh, what fun it is to ride in a Newfoundland dog cart sleigh! Olde Golden Holidays hosted its final December weekend event with the annual Jingle on the Avenue Dec. 16. Washington Avenue closed for two hours midday, so Goldenites and other area families could meet their favorite holiday characters. The street was filled with families taking photos with Frosty the Snowman, Buddy the Elf, the Gingerbread Man, the Grinch, and of course — everyone’s favorite Christmas couple — Santa and Mrs. Claus. There were other games and activities for attendees, including live music and rides in a “sleigh” pulled by a Newfoundland dog. Although the winter holiday season’s winding down, Goldenites will probably pack downtown next year for all their favorite December traditions.

This week, the lieutenant governor of Colorado came to Lakewood to bring attention to great causes and the disabled community, while the Regional Transportation District issued reminders about fare changes Meanwhile, two politicians are co-sponsoring a law to help people with eating disorders and other health issues. Keep reading to find out what’s happening around Jefferson County. Primavera visits Lakewood to support people with disabilities and service animals

Colorado Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera recently visited Lakewood nonprofit Domino Service Dogs. The trip was to highlight services for disabled Coloradans. Primavera also used the space to promote the work of the Colorado Disability Funding Committee. “With one in four Colorado adults living with a disability, we know just how important it is to make sure our disability community is well served,” Primavera said. “Thanks to the Colorado Disability Funding Committee and important organizations like Domino Service Dogs, we are able to find innovative opportunities to expand support for people with disabilities here in Colorado.” The committee also supports programs that help people apply for disability and medical services. They are also the organization that auctions the rights to personalized official Colorado license plates. The money raised through the plates goes back into the support that the committee offers to people with disabilities all over the state. You can read more on the Colorado State website. RTD Reminder of January light rail and systemwide fare changes

It’s that time of year, or one of three times each year that RTD (Regional Transportation District) adjusts its schedules to accommodate changes. This announcement also came with a reminder of a fare decrease taking place in January as well.

The schedule adjustments are a response to changes in ridership, traffic, the economy and feedback from customers. The schedule changes will affect the following routes: • Local/limited bus routes: 6, 10, 15, 15L, 38, 51, 52, 65, 133, 204, 324, 327 • Regional bus routes: AT, BOLT, CV, EV, FF1, FF2, LD, NB, RX • Rail: D, E, H, L, R, W (E and H Lines return to 15-minute frequencies) • Access-s-Ride routes with reductions or improvements may impact paratransit service availability. These changes go into effect on Jan. 7. For a complete list, go to the notice on the RTD website. The new lower fares across the RTD system go into effect Jan. 7. The standard fee is currently $3.00 for a 3-hour pass and $5.50 for a day pass. That is going down to $2.57 for a 3-hour pass and $6.00 for a day pass. For more information and a complete list of new fares, check out the new fares on the RTD webpage. Sen. Cutter and Rep. Kennedy cosponsor law to help people with eating disorders and other health issues

The Colorado General Assembly recently announced a slate of new laws supporting measures on Epi-Pen affordability, informed consent for medical procedures and health care protections for people suffering from eating disorders. The laws go into effect Jan. 1. Two area lawmakers, Rep. Chris deGruy Kennedy, D-Lakewood and Sena-

tor Lisa Cutter, D-Jefferson County co-sponsored the new law protecting people with eating disorders. According to Kennedy, the law SB23-176: Protections for People with Eating Disorders was created because one in three people with eating disorders receive improper treatment or none at all due to outdated body measurement standards. “This law prohibits health insurance companies from denying eating disorder treatments based on outdated standards, like body mass index and ideal body weight,” Kennedy said. “We’re eliminating harmful approaches so we can ensure the health and safety of Coloradans.” “We must address outdated and harmful approaches to treating eating disorders and provide care that is respectful to each individual and on par with the latest research,” Cutter said. The other bills, HB23-1002 Epinephrine Auto-injectors and HB231077 Informed Consent to Intimate Patient Examinations, are found on the Colorado General Assembly website. Jefferson County residents can offer up their designs for the 2024 I Voted sticker through Dec. 31. The extended date applies to all categories: elementary school, youth and adult. For more information and to submit a design, go to the I Voted sticker design contest page on the Jeffco website.

Coors Brewery hosts sesquicentennial celebration

Golden High School wasn’t the only local institution celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2023. The iconic Coors Brewery celebrated throughout the year, by helping local nonprofits and commissioning a mural along its Ford Street-facing exterior in the summer.

But, the biggest celebration was yet to come. On Sept. 30, current and former Coors employees and their families, Goldenites and local beer fans took over Washington Avenue and Parfet Park to wish their favorite brewery a hoppy birthday. The company hosted other events for its VIPs throughout the weekend, but the Sept. 30 block party served as a brewitful encapsulation of Coors’ 150-year history. City, Mines launch free Ore Cart shuttles

IN REWIND FOR GOLDEN BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

2023 was a jam-packed year for the Golden community, with plenty of smiles and tears, losses and major milestones. It was a year of reflecting on the decisions of the past and the possibilities of the future. Goldenites reflected on their predecessors who shaped today’s community and made their own decisions about tomorrow’s community. They prioritized managing Clear Creek’s summertime visitors, investing in free intra-city transportation and financially supporting the fire department. In these final days of 2023, the Transcript offers a look back at some of the year’s biggest stories.

This summer, the City of Golden and Colorado School of Mines introduced a new way to get around Golden. The first Ore Cart shuttle route around downtown Golden launched mid-June, and in mid-August, the two institutions launched three more routes around campus and to RTD’s W and G Lines. The free shuttles have been a huge asset for both Goldenites and Orediggers, connecting them to the Denver-area public transit network and helping alleviate downtown Golden’s parking woes. The Transcript’s “For the Record” examination

In mid-February, the Transcript released a 5,000-word article examining its past coverage of the Black community and how that coverage, or lack thereof, contributed to systemic racism. “For the Record” looked at the Transcript’s reprinted stories about the Black Panther Party as one example of a larger problem, reflecting on how the Transcript failed to cover

the local Black community in a meaningful way. The article also covered some of Golden’s history with the KKK and discriminatory housing practices, and Goldenites’ work to confront these things, the attitudes behind them and their impacts. Finally, it explored how the community, the City of Golden and the Transcript hope to create a more equitable Golden in 2023 and beyond.

On Oct. 11, the city rededicated Station No. 24 — which is along Heritage Road near Colfax Avenue — as it was fully staffed 24/7 for the first time in its 40year history. This allowed firefighters to respond to more calls more quickly, particularly along the Colfax Avenue, U.S. 6 and Interstate 70 corridors. The additional staff was initially grant-funded, but in the Nov. 7 election, Golden voters passed Ballot Issue 2K for a 6-mill increase in property taxes to help fund GFD. Along with supporting 14 firefighter positions, these new funds will go toward training, certification upgrades, life-saving equipment and more.

Among the many notable Goldenites the community lost this year was Marv Kay, Golden’s former mayor and “the greatest Oredigger ever.” Kay died April 19 at age 84. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane, who died March 15. The two were married for 55 years. Kay served on the Golden City Council in the 1980s and 1990s and was involved in several civic organizations until his death. The Colorado School of Mines alumnus was also the university’s football coach, athletic director and fundraiser for more than 35 years. On May 15, his family and friends held a public memorial for him at Mines’ Marv Kay Stadium, remembering him as their “North Star.” Then, in the fall, the Mines football players wore helmet stickers honoring Kay.

Brighton’s Cisneros a Mines rugby all-star College sophomore to join 2024 Pac West Collegiate Grizzlies in January BY JOHN RENFROW JRENFROW@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Brighton just might be a hub for local rugby phenoms. One rising star came up through the Brighton Youth Rugby Association to sharpen his football skills but quickly found a knack for rugby’s more rugged, scrappier version of the game. The now sophomore scrumhalf (keep reading to learn what that is) for the Colorado School of Mines’s club men’s rugby team recently was

named to the National Collegiate Rugby Western Region All-Star Team. He’ll compete against the best players in the country for the 2024 Pac West Collegiate Grizzlies in Austin, Texas, Jan. 6-8. “I got introduced to it here in Brighton when my older brother Josh played rugby,” Cisneros said. “We played baseball all our lives and we were starting to kind of turn away from that. We were starting to look for other sports, and we saw rugby was available here. I watched him play and that’s how I discovered the scene here.” For the first few years Cisneros was involved, he said generally only football players played rugby (mainly just to get better at football). But he still attended Brighton High School and was a letterman in football and track for the Bulldogs. Now at the School of Mines, Cisneros isn’t a scholarship player. Unlike football or basketball, rugby isn’t a varsity sport for the university. National Collegiate Rugby, or NCR, isn’t an NCAA-sanctioned sport, so the athletes aren’t separated by NCAA divisions. But there are three divisions in NCR: the highest (Division I), the second-highest (Division II), and the small college division (where the School of Mines competes). It’s a club sport funded prominently by the late Rick Carlson, a legendary coach and figure with the School of Mines rugby program since its inception in 1967. Carlson’s family and estate support the

team to this day, allowing the athletes to travel and have the right equipment, among other expenses. I sat down with Cisneros to discuss the local rugby scene, what it means to be a collegiate rugby allstar, and what other goals he has for himself in college and beyond. Check out the Q&A below. Throughout the summer and early fall, Golden High School celebrated its sesquicentennial with special events, capped off with a spectacular 2023 Homecoming Parade. In June, hundreds of Demons returned to their alma mater to see the relatively new campus and have a multi-class reunion; in August, the Golden History Museum opened an exhibit exploring

the school’s extensive history; and in September, thousands of GHS students and alumni turned Washington Avenue maroon and white. Overall, the year’s celebrations honored the generations of Demons who’ve imbued GHS with its “small-town culture” to form “a school with soul.” 2023 ultimately reminded everyone: “Once a Demon, always a Demon.”

Managing Clear Creek

Golden’s tubing season officially started July 3 — a bit later than usual — and lasted about five weeks. But, the thousands of tubers that packed Clear Creek and downtown Golden this summer seemed to have fun. Maybe a little too much fun, as city officials later reported major compliance issues from

tubers this summer. While the city and its community partners took steps to mitigate impacts along Clear Creek, city staff said it issued just as many citations for alcohol, parking and other problems as in previous years, despite 2023’s shorter season. City officials are working on new measures and modifications for summer 2024.

Two of Golden’s premier arts organizations have been expanding operations in 2023. The Foothills Art Center started renovating and building onto the historic structure in May 2022 with plans to finish in late 2023. As of midDecember, work was still ongoing. Additionally, FAC was also renovating its 15th Street property as its new creative campus with studios and classrooms. Work started in the spring, and the building reopened in the fall. Across the parking lot from the Astor House, Miners Alley Playhouse was building a performing arts center in the former Meyer Hardware building. After 10 months of construction, the Miners Alley Performing Arts Center opened Dec. 2 with its inaugural show, “The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical.”

Respiratory illnesses rising across the state, local doctors caution Flu and COVID-19 cases also increasing, but hospitalizations remain lower than this time last year, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment BY SUZIE GLASSMAN SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

Respiratory-related illnesses typically associated with the winter months are rising. Statewide flu, COVID-19 and Respiratory syncytial virus cases began climbing in the early weeks of October but took a sharper spike toward the end of November. “The number of RSV cases has risen sharply over the past two weeks,” said Dr. Sam Dominguez, MD, infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. RSV is a condition that mimics the

common cold with symptoms like congestion, coughing, headaches, fever, runny nose and sore throat. For premature infants and young children with chronic lung or heart conditions, RSV can be dangerous, even life-threatening. Dominguez isn’t sure what’s behind the acceleration in cases but said he believes Thanksgiving travel may have contributed. According to Children’s Hospital, RSV spreads primarily through close contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces. The most recent RSV data shows

there were 541 positive cases (including adults and children) the week of Dec. 3, up from 349 just two weeks prior. Since October 1, there have been 51 recorded RSV outbreaks in school and childcare settings with no RSV-associated pediatric deaths, according to the CDPHE. “We do not know when we will peak or how high the peak will be,” Dominguez said. “We think the numbers will likely continue to go up and/or be high for the next several weeks. While these numbers are as high as they were at the peak of 2021, they’re still significantly lower than they were at the peak of 2022.” He also pointed out that Children’s Hospital is seeing an increase in influenza A and B, although currently at lower levels than RSV. RUGBY FROM PAGE 10

It was kind of just something to help me get better in football. But my high school coach told me about Mines rugby and I thought, “That sounds interesting.” He got me in contact with [Ford]. He’s been telling me since I got there, he’s like “Mate,” because he’s Australian. He’s like, “Mate, you’re going to get that all-star selection” and this and that. I didn’t really take him seriously at first. But coming into my second season at Mines, I guess I maybe did expect some sort of recognition, if it wasn’t the all-star selection, specifically. But it was definitely unexpected when I got the email. CCM: What’s the goal at the all-star game in Austin this coming January?

Cisneros: I saw the email but I

didn’t really take it seriously. But that’s when [Coach Ford] called me one morning and said I should go because this is how you become an All-American. The all-star selection is great and all, but what I’m really going for is the All-American selection. This tournament is where you get selected for that. Coach Anthony was an All-American when he played in college. He came from Australia and played in Nebraska. And so, a big reason why I want to accomplish this is because of him. He really inspired me to shoot for that goal and encouraged me from the beginning, saying I could do it. CCM: It’s always a war against your opponents on the field, but do events like the all-star tournament allow you to pick the brains of other great players?

Cisneros:For sure. There are a lot of times when on the field and in practice, I’m helping or teach-

ing my teammates who are new to the game. A lot of the guys we get to join the rugby team have never played before. It’s a big learning curve. I think it’ll be really awesome to be in a position where I’m learning a lot. Not to say I don’t learn during the season, I think I’ve grown immensely during the course of this last season. But opportunities like this don’t come every day. So, I’m definitely looking forward to picking the brains of all the other players and coaches there. CCM: As a scrumhalf, can you please, in your own words, describe your position or role on the field?

Cisneros:Coach Anthony was a scrumhalf when he played, too. He describes the scrumhalf as, if you want to put it in football terms, the center mixed with the quarterback. So, the center snaps the ball to start the play and the quarterback is kind of the general on the

field. So the responsibility of the scrumhalf is to be that general but also be the person who starts the next phase of play when there’s a tackle. Coach likes to say I mix in a little running back into it as well. CCM: As a sophomore, what other goals do you have in your college rugby career?

Cisneros:This seems like an ambitious goal, but my ultimate goal in my college career is to win the national championship for our team. We finished ranked 11th last season and finished a little lower this year. But I think we’ve got the guys to do it. We’ve got the coaches to do it. The thing that we’re lacking right now is experience. But we’re playing a lot of rugby and playing a spring season as well. The All-American selection would be fantastic as maybe an individual accomplishment, but my ultimate goal is for our team to win the national championship.

VOICES Mind-blowing: Bubble-wrapped brains

E

volution is a curious process. Whether devouring a mate, squirting acid from the abdomen or shooting blood from the eye, each speINSIDE THE cies fits perfectly in its own niche, even OUTDOORS though that niche is not always understood by humans. For example, the expectation that two 300-pound animals, each carrying 30 pounds of horn on his head, should Christie Greene run into each at 40 mph is staggering. Bighorn sheep have intrigued scientists who wish to learn how the animals’ head-bashing behaviors do not result in concussions. In an interview with the New York Times, Dr. Gregory D. Myer, director of research in sports medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, shared a head-scratching description of the mechanism by which bighorn sheep rams avoid concussions. He stated that “bighorns’ brains are naturally protected with mechanisms that slow the return of blood from the head to the body, increasing blood volume that fills their brains’ vascular tree, creating the Bubble Wrap effect.” Myer continued his mind-boggling explanation: “The sheep has hollow pneumatic horn cores attached to its respiratory system that allow it to

re-breathe its air and thus increase carbon dioxide in its bloodstream, expanding its intracranial vascular tree and enhancing the Bubble Wrap effect.” No quiz will be given at the conclusion of this article. Yet, there has been recent research suggesting that the sheeps’ headramming might be more impactful to their brain health than earlier believed. In 2022, the Icahn School of

Medicine at Mount Sinai published a study in Acta Neuropathologica revealing that signs of concussions and head trauma were present in the brains of deceased bighorn sheep and muskoxen. If brain damage isn’t enough of a challenge, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (RMBHS, for those in the know) face serious threats from infringement of the more aggressive mountain goat and the tragic effects

of a strain of pneumonia contracted from domestic goats and sheep which is fatal to RMBHS lambs. Colorado Parks and Wildlife states that the separation of domestic sheep and goats from RMBHS is critical to the survival of the state’s wild sheep. In Idaho, a sheep rancher’s grazing permit was retired in order to prevent infection of a neighboring RMBHS herd after the wild herd suffered 100% lamb mortality for several consecutive years. Domestic sheep are carriers of the disease but remain asymptomatic. Fortunately, the largest bighorn sheep herd in Colorado is receiving support from federal and state government agencies. The Colorado Department of Transportation will be constructing a wildlife overpass near the town of Empire, protecting the sheep and other wildlife from collisions with vehicles. The project is to be completed by 2025. Additionally, Rocky Mountain National Park protects its bighorn sheep population from the threat of encroachment by mountain goats by killing goats that enter the park. Humans can support bighorn sheep populations by keeping domestic sheep and goats contained, driving carefully in bighorn sheep habitats, refraining from feeding sheep and by giving them space. As the majestic Colorado State animal since 1961, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep deserves protection and respect.

Putting It into perspective

W

e’re a curious species, we Homo sapiens. Among the billion-plus species that have gone extinct and those with whom we now share Earth, some precariously close to extinction, we’re the only ones, as far as I can determine, that believe we’re exempt from the laws of nature. But the truth is we’re like every other animal when it comes to survival and continuation of the species. And extinction is part of that natural phenomena.

JERRY FABYANIC

Columnist

Perhaps the dinosaurs thought they were exempt from natural law. After all, they ruled the planet for over 175 million years. They even had a fierce king: the Tyrannosaurus Rex. But he along with nearly all his minions got fricasseed in a firestorm, choked

to death on noxious gasses, or got swept away by tsunamis in Earth’s Fifth Mass Extinction when a comet the size of Mt. Everest gut-punched Mother Earth. Such are the vagaries of the universe. If one steps back from the bedlam engulfing us and takes a grand view of the totality of Earth’s history, they should be in awe, even humbled. And disconcerted. Because of the hundreds of millions of species that have roamed the land, swam in the seas, and flew in the sky, we’re the

only ones with the knowledge, capability, and most scarily, willingness to destroy not only ourselves but also the environment that sustains us. To help put American history into perspective as well as their place and role in it, I had my eighth-grade students draw a series of lines across an eighteen-inch sheet of tagboard and plot dates from the birth of Earth to present day on them. FABYANIC FROM PAGE 14

Each subsequent line was a closeup of a portion of the timeframe from the line above. As you might imagine, it was quite an exercise, an eyeopener especially that even within the few thousand years of documented human history, America’s history took up little space, and their few years a fraction of it. I recalled that activity when watching the Netflix series, “Life on Our Planet.” In the series, a timeline is used to help move viewers through the epochs chronologically and put the epochs into perspective. It caused me to wonder how long a roll of paper I’d need if I created a timeline from the birth of the Earth 4,000,000,000 years ago to now if one foot equaled a century. The answer: 7,575 miles, which is nearly the diameter of Earth. Next I wondered how much space on the 7,575-mile—forty-millionfoot—length I’d have to plot the significant dates and stretches of my life. Given that I’ve lived for about three quarters of a century, I calculated I’d have nine inches. Finally, I wondered what percentage of the timeline I’d occupy. The answer: 0.00000001875 percent. Of course, a 7,575 roll of paper is neither realistic nor workable, so I pictured a more manageable one of 400 feet, where one foot equaled 40,000,000 years. I imagined plotting these significant dates, from a human point of view, onto it: (Note: Some scholars posit different dates and timeframes for the various epochs.) First oceanic life forms: 2,000,000,000 years Plant Life on Land: 450,000,000 years Rise of the Dinosaurs: 245,000,000 years Death of the Dinosaurs: 66,000,000 years Earliest humans – Homo ha-

bilis: 2,000,000 years Rise of Homo sapiens: 100,000 years First Agricultural Revolution: 12,000 years Founding of the American Republic: 250 years My Life Span As you might have calculated, the entirety of humanoid history would take up an infinitesimally small space on that 400-foot timeline. And my life, your life? Could we go the way of the dinosaurs? It would be folly to think otherwise. Perhaps the comet that did them in was the first of a onetwo punch. Although not expected anytime soon, maybe the Yellowstone Cauldron will blow its gasket. And then there is environmental degradation and AI: Artificial Intelligence. There is conjecture it could lead to our own extinction. I cannot authoritatively speak to that, but I can about the capabilities of human folly. I just look at and read the news. Looking at it from that grand macro perspective, I’ve concluded that I’m merely a microscopic dot when calculating my time and space relative to the whole. Understanding that, I asked myself what I will do with this precious gift — conscious life — that I have remaining, especially with 2024 approaching with its dire prospects. It sure as heck won’t be engaging in base human actions like judging, killing or denigrating others in the name of some creed, ideology, or other complex. Rather it will be spent celebrating life by doing uplifting stuff like writing, hanging with friends, and reflecting on what my — and our — place is in the grand scheme and whether by our choices and machinations we will bring about the Sixth Mass Extinction. Handlers in Idaho Springs, Brighton and beyond help the animals spread holiday joy BY HALEY LENA HLENA@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

A

sense of magic in the air sparks joy when people young and old see reindeer. But for the owners of the reindeer, it’s a balance between creating a magical experience for people and making sure the reindeer are comfortable. Kayla McIntosh, who owns Riverdale Reindeer of Colorado with her husband David McIntosh, said it’s easy these days for people to get caught up in school and work, which doesn’t always feel magical. “But the ability to see an animal

that most people believe doesn’t actually exist,” Kayla McIntosh said. “And to see the kids light up and the parents really enjoy it and even learn things, it really is just a beautiful opportunity.” Reindeer have been domesticated for thousands of years and have been used for various purposes. They also tend to make the holidays a little brighter by participating in holiday events across the metro area. However, it takes a lot of work to prepare reindeer for events to ensure it’s a safe environment for the public and so the reindeer remain happy and healthy.

For each reindeer owner, training may look different, but it all starts with learning about the fascinating animal. What makes reindeer a unique animal

Santa Bill (as he preferred to be called) at Laughing Valley Ranch in Idaho Springs has learned a lot about reindeer over his many years of working with them. Just as other entities train their reindeer differently, reindeer are not all alike, he said. They each have a unique personality and different characteristics than other animals in the deer species.

“We want to educate everybody about reindeer and what magical animals they really are,” Santa Bill said. When adults and children interact with the reindeer, Santa Bill includes an educational piece, which he calls a domestic livestock educational experience, that details reindeer adaptations for survival. Reindeer can adapt to the changing seasons. They can change their coats and hooves and have amazing eyesight — they are the only animals that can see ultraviolet light, according to Santa Bill. train them to be petable animals.” For events, the reindeer are set up in an enclosure which is decorated with garland, bows and lanterns around the holiday season. It is important to the family to include an educational aspect where they can talk to the kids and other guests about what it is like to be in agriculture and to raise animals. The family loves to interact with the kids as well and typically provides treats, stickers and coloring sheets. Although the reindeer don’t do long events, when they get tired, they will just lay down. “We don’t force them to do anything they don’t want to do,” Kayla said. “They’re resting and relaxed and we want to encourage them to just enjoy their surroundings. They should feel like they are at home.”

REINDEER FROM PAGE 16

What helps reindeer stand out are their antlers, Santa Bill added. Reindeer are the only members of the deer family that both male and female grow a new set of antlers every year. They use their antlers to strip away snow and vegetation, to find food and to defend themselves. Male reindeer, also known as a bull, can have antlers that grow up to four feet tall, and they can weigh 25 to 30 pounds each, Santa Bill said. Owners have to be extra careful with reindeer during their rut season, because they’re scraping velvet off their antlers — which is part of the natural growth process and acts as protection, Santa Bill continued. At the ranch, most of the reindeer training happens after the rut and mating season where they are walked around their pens, outside and practice going in and out of the trailer. When training, even reindeer who have done events in the past need a little refresher to get back into the routine and certain training aids may not always work. “Sometimes we have to try different things,” Santa Bill said. “Nothing is an exact science when it comes to training animals.” These reindeer also learn how to pull Santa’s sleigh by using reigns to signal the reindeer to start moving and the assistance of reindeer wranglers using lead ropes to guide the reindeer. Another unique characteristic of reindeer is, unlike horses and cattle, reindeer can only kick forward and have a slight retraction. This helps them gain traction and start to catch air, Santa Bill said. When people tell Santa Bill they thought the reindeer would be bigger, he says if they were any bigger, they’d be too heavy to get off the ground. “It’s a magical thing,” Santa Bill said. Riverdale Reindeer Farm

deer to events simply because of their love of reindeer and the hope to share that joy and passion with others. David McIntosh is a fifth-generation dairy farmer whose family has been caring for and raising animals in Colorado since the early 1900s. He has also always been interested in reindeer. Together, David and Kayla McIntosh spent years studying the history and biology of reindeer, have talked with other reindeer owners and breeders and have visited a number of farms. Kayla McIntosh said it may sound corny, but just being in the presence of the reindeer and seeing their majesty is truly wonderful. The McIntosh family has been raising reindeer for about three years. They have Lacuna, Chilli, Noelle, Cranberry, Juniper, Kristoff and Hickory, the first bull to be born on the Riverdale Reindeer farm. When preparing reindeer for events, Kayla McIntosh said the most basic point in training is spending time with the reindeer. “It’s not like dedicated training hours, so much as it is just spending a lot of time with them,” Kayla McIntosh said. “It’s a pretty consistent thing to get them to be comfortable with us.” At their farm, they are very particular about giving the reindeer their autonomy and don’t expect the reindeer to be okay with people petting them. Cranberry is one of the reindeer

that regularly goes to events but isn’t keen on being touched and the McIntosh family doesn’t force it. However, working with Hickory over the past year, he has become more comfortable around kids. In addition to shows and holiday events, Hickory has also gone to schools where he got used to standing still for photos. “A lot of the training was just on the spot,” Kayla McIntosh said. “Watching his cues, seeing if he felt comfortable in the situation and walking him out of the situation if he felt uncomfortable and giving him time to resettle.” To ensure the reindeer always feel comfortable and safe, the family’s goal is that the reindeer enjoy going to events just as much as people enjoy coming to see them. The family takes their reindeer’s personalities into account when they decide who goes to an event. Kayla McIntosh said even on the day of an event, they look to see who is feeling comfortable and who is feeling agitated. If they can’t put a certain two reindeer together, they won’t do it. The McIntoshes also want to make sure they keep the people coming to watch the show safe in the instance a reindeer gets nervous or agitated — one swing of the head could cause someone to get poked or hit with an antler. “We do our best to make sure that isn’t even an option,” Kayla McIntosh said. “So we encourage lots of photos and things but we don’t specifically

Keeping reindeer happy and healthy

Holly and Eve are two reindeer who are not afraid to lay down and get comfortable. At 7 Oaks Reindeer Farm in Franktown, Lisa Vaughn said she would never let her reindeer get to the point of feeling overworked. “When they’re tired, they just fall asleep,” Vaughn said. Vaughn has had Holly and Eve for about two and half years and said they are like big dogs as they like to greet her when she comes, love treats and even get the zoomies. Vaughn works with trainer Karena Mee to get the reindeer used to people. In addition to gently touching the reindeer, they would hold a happy hour once a week so the reindeer could get used to a crowd and music. Holly and Eve have been busy throughout the holiday season. They took part in the tree lighting in Elizabeth, were at the Parker Hometown Holiday Parade and spent time at Lone Creek Farms. The holiday season is also a lot of effort for the reindeer owners and handlers as well. They have to load the trailer, make sure there is enough food and supplies to last throughout the event and once they get to the event, they set up the pen to ensure it’s comfortable for the reindeer. Hard work and early mornings aside, it’s all worth it when they have the opportunity to educate others on reindeer and see the excitement on the children’s faces. And it’s not just kids who get excited to see the reindeer. “The adults are just as flabbergasted as the kids,” Mee said.

After losing to reigning champs Ferris State 41-14 in their first-ever NCAA title game, the Mines players and coaches took stock of their accomplishments and what it’d take to return to the McKinney, Texasbased championship. The players trained throughout the offseason, preparing for spring practices and the intrasquad scrimmage. On April 19, first-year head coach Brandon Moore announced his departure, and offensive coordinator Pete Sterbick was named interim head coach. He led the Orediggers in the April 22 spring game, where up-andcoming players showcased their talent. Mines Athletics announced Sterbick as the new head coach on May 3, and by the Orediggers’ preseason camp in August, the players were “hungry” to kick off their 2023 season. Colorado School of Mines fans, dressed as mascot Blaster the burro, cheer on the football team during its Oct. 28 home game against Western Colorado. Despite the snowy weather, more than 5,500 fans turned out to watch the Top 10 teams, as the FILE PHOTO BY CORINNE WESTEMAN game sold out almost a week ahead of time.

Adrian Moreno said Mines’ recruiting classes were getting better every year, and the new players were helping the upperclassmen improve. “Their potential is sky-high,” Matocha said of the recruits. “ … It makes competition fiercer (at practice) and

makes all of us better.” The regular season

Like 2022, Mines was ranked in the Top 5 nationally, but its first two games were against fellow Top 5 teams in Grand Valley State and Angelo State. Mines kicked off its 2023 season at home against Grand Valley State, where the Lakers had a fourth-quarter comeback to tie the game at 28. The Orediggers won 31-28, thanks to a successful 30-second drill and Hunter Pearson field goal. The next week in San Angelo, Texas, Mines made a fourth-quarter comeback of its own and beat Angelo State 31-21. Afterward, it started rolling through its conference schedule. The highlight of the RMAC schedule was the battle-of-the-undefeateds against No. 9 Western Colorado. In what was expected to be a close game, the Orediggers pulled away from the Mountaineers during the snowy second half and won 42-7. On Nov. 4, the Orediggers celebrated 31 graduating seniors and destroyed New Mexico Highlands 77-3. The next week at Fort Lewis, it won its fifth-straight conference title and the 2023-24 senior class became

the winningest in program history. While Mines ended the regular season undefeated, Sterbick said Dec. 12 that there were still low points and teachable moments. He listed the fourth quarter of the Aug. 31 Grand Valley State, when Mines blew a 28-7 lead; Mines’ scoreless second half against Chadron State Sept. 30; and a 17-14 halftime deficit Oct. 21 at Black Hills State. Still, Sterbick said he wouldn’t have done anything differently, adding, “You only find out so much about your team if you’re blowing everybody out.” The playoffs

In the NCAA Division II tournament bracket, Mines was named the No. 1 seed in Super Region IV and received a bye week Nov. 18. As the top-ranked team, Mines ended up hosting all its playoff games, and the rowdy crowds gave the Orediggers an advantage. In the Nov. 25 second-round game, Mines faced off against No. 4 seed Augustana — Sterbick’s alma mater. The Orediggers found momentum early and kept it the entire game, winning 56-10. A New Year’s Eve for every kind of reveler

I

t’s time to say bon voyage (or good riddance, depending on your year) to 2023 and welcome in 2024, and as always, the metro area is brimming with options for every kind of celebrant. Whether you’re looking for a big, swanky party, an event with lots of crowds that everyone can enjoy, or something aimed for the younger crowds, Denver has you covered. Child-centered

Noon Year’s Eve at Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus, 2121 Children’s Museum Drive The ever-popular child-friendly option is back for another year, bringing all the fun of New Year’s Eve in Times Square well before bedtime.

Meet Dixie! Dixie (286043) is a 6-year-old female American Pit Bull Terrier who is easy to leash, walks politely, and appreciates time for sniffing. This gentle girl will give you her paw and sit for treats. She played with another sociable dog at the Shelter and may like a canine pal. Dixie is not suitable for homes with barnyard fowl like chickens. Her adoption fee has been waived thanks to the support of staff or volunteers who have sponsored her. Visit www.FoothillsAnimalShelter.org to find out more about Dixie and other wonderful dogs like her.

IgNight NYE, Tivoli Quad, 1000 Larimer St. Hosted by ONE Denver (Office of Nighttime Economy Denver), this event blends the usage of fire and ice to celebrate 2024 in a way that has something for everyone. Running from 4 to 7 p.m., the event features ice sculptures made on site in front of visitors and the presence of a 50-plus-foot-tall hot-air balloon for all your selfie backdrop needs. It will also feature a glow-in-the-dark scavenger hunt and interactive movie characters. Plus, if you decide to stay downtown for the annual fireworks display, you’ll be in a great spot. Life can get a bit grey this time of year, so why not head over to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. in Denver, and brighten things up with its exhibit, Wild Color. A celebration of the beauty of the natural world, the exhibition showcases a diverse collection of vivid plants and animals, with each color in the rainbow getting an opportunity to shine. The exhibit spans 7,000 square feet in the Museum’s Anschutz Gallery and features all kinds of vibrant offerings for guests to explore. Entry comes with museum admission, so head over to www.dmns.org for details. Wings Over the Rockies updates Wright Brothers exhibit

Most people are at least familiar

with the Wright Brothers name, even if they don’t know much about the aviation pioneers. The Wings Over the Rockies museum, 7711 East Academy Blvd. in Denver, aims to do something about that by celebrating the 120th anniversary of Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first powered flight with an enhanced Wright Brothers exhibit. The exhibit includes a roomier and more informative Wright Flyer simulator. According to provided information, to make the experience even more realistic, the simulator will feature a new projector and a larger, brighter screen and more graphics to make the viewer feel like they are actually there. The exhibit will also feature an original Wright Model K Propeller signed by Orville Wright at his home in Dayton in 1944 and provide information on “the third Wright brother,” their sister Katharine. Visit wingsmuseum.org for all you need to know. Clarke’s Concert of the Week — Laura Jane Grace at the Marquis Theater

If you were a fan of alternative music and punk rock in the first 15 years or so of the 2000s, then its pretty likely you’re familiar with the work of Laura Jane Grace, who fronted Florida’s seminal group, Against Me! The band is currently on hiatus, but that hasn’t stopped Grace from releasing her own music, and she’s preparing to kick off 2024 with a new album, “Hole in My Head,” releasing in February. She’s getting an early start on touring behind the album and will be performing a New Year’s Eve show at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 at the Marquis Theater, 2009 Larimer St. in Denver. Opener Mya Byrne is joining for what is sure to be a raucous way to welcome in 2024. Get tickets at www. livenation.com.

Anyone six months and older can get a 2023-2024 COVID-19 and flu vaccine. Next up was the Dec. 2 quarterfinals against unseeded Central Washington. Sterbick said the Orediggers worked through another low point in the season, as they had an arrhythmic second quarter and went into halftime tied at 14. However, Mines took back the momentum in the second half, scoring three unanswered touchdowns and a field goal to win 38-14. Sterbick pointed out how the Orediggers have advanced to threestraight semifinals under three different head coaches. He said that feat validates former head coach Gregg Brandon’s structure and focus on the players. “To be able to win (the NCAA tournament) region three years in a row … it shows that what you’re doing is working,” he continued. “ … The school recruits itself.” On Dec. 9, Mines hosted Super Region I champion Kutztown. The Orediggers controlled most of the game, only allowing the Golden Bears to find the end zone once. As the clock hit zero on the 35-7 win, the players, coaches and fans celebrated as the Orediggers punched their ticket to their secondstraight NCAA Division II National Championship game. Unfortunately for the Orediggers, it would be their only scoring drive. The Bisons stifled their offensive efforts the rest of the game, as the Orediggers’ remaining drives ended in punts and failed fourth-down conversions.

At the end of the first half, Mines was down 21-7, and Sterbick said later the Orediggers needed something before halftime so they could build on that momentum in the third quarter. They had just enough time to attempt a 49-yard field goal, but it was no good. Meanwhile, Harding’s unique flexbone triple-option offense was too much to stop. Almost every drive ended in a touchdown while eating up the clock. Mines didn’t force a punt until the fourth quarter, and by then, Harding had a commanding lead. Ultimately, the Bisons won 38-7 and they celebrated their perfect 15-0 season and their first national title. Meanwhile, the Orediggers ended their season 14-1 and were stuck with silver once again. While it didn’t end as they’d hoped, the Orediggers still had a historic 2023 season. They racked up numerous individual and team accolades; broke several school, conference and NCAA records; and became the winningest team in program history. Sterbick and Matocha were proud of everything the Orediggers accomplished in 2023, and were confident Mines would be back in McKinney soon. “Making the national championship, especially for the second year in a row, it’s nothing to smirk at. It’s something to be proud of,” Matocha said. “(This loss) is motivation for the guys next year. We know the formula. We got just as much talent coming back. So, I’m excited to see them (back here) next year.”

SUPPORT LOCAL JOURNALISM

DON’T LET YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPERS GO SILENT.

This year, even more than ever before, the news is in crisis. More than 17,000 news media jobs were cut just by June, at national and local outlets including at some of the biggest names like NPR, The Texas Tribune and Gannett. In fact, newsroom layoffs are up 20% from last year. Some of these outlets laid off more than 10% of their staff in the last few months — even as we head into a critical election year. These are devastating numbers. But all is not lost. Many local and independent newsrooms continue to launch across the country. With your contributions and subscriber memberships, small newsrooms like ours continue to grow, adding new journalists and expanding reporting and investigations. We’re committed to bringing the news to Coloradans. That’s because you deserve access to local, independent journalism that keeps you connected and informed — especially during challenging times. This is #newsCOneeds.
