An earth-shaking groundbreaking Mines, USGS start construction on joint Energy and Minerals Research Facility BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLOROADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The 40-year partnership between Colorado School of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey is reaching new heights. The two organizations recently broke ground on the USGS Energy and Minerals Research Facility on the Mines campus. The building, which is scheduled to open in fall 2026, will house 250 USGS re-

searchers and 170 Mines faculty and students for collaborative research and continued partnership. The new 190,000-square-foot building will be directly east of the USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center near 18th and Illinois streets. The 2021 federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Act is funding the $240 million construction project. “World-class science demands world-class space,” USGS Director David Applegate said at the Nov. 13 groundbreaking ceremony, “and we’re going to have it here.” Once completed, Applegate said it’ll house the fourth-largest concentration of USGS employees anywhere, and the largest on any college campus. Johnson said, with classrooms, social spaces, faculty offices and laboratories. Once done, it’ll be the largest research facility on the campus, and will allow for major educational and workforce development opportunities, he and other university officials said. With about 200 Mines and USGS employees, federal government representatives and others in attendance at the Nov. 13 groundbreaking, Applegate and Johnson emphasized how many of them made this vision come to fruition after eight or nine years of discussions. Johnson said the groundbreaking was more than a mere ceremony, but a celebration of all the people who “stuck with this vision” for so long and worked so hard to finally make it happen. He, Applegate and others were very excited about the continued partnership and collaborative research between Mines and USGS, saying it’ll lead to crucial discoveries in the energy sector when the

Dinosaur Ridge celebrates major milestone STAFF REPORT

Dinosaur Ridge recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Morrison Fossil Area’s designation as a National Natural Landmark, including the main hogback that Dinosaur Ridge calls home. On Nov. 12, the organization hosted a special celebration with local, state and federal officials as well as local geologists, museum representatives and volunteers. About 40 people attended the main gathering. The NNL program, which is administered by the National Park Service, includes a voluntary commitment by the landowners and stewards to protect these national treasures. There are approximately 600 NNLs in the country, including 16 in Colorado.

The Dinosaur Ridge hogback is on Jefferson County Open Space land, and the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge nonprofit works to preserve and educate people on the dinosaur footprints and fossils found at the site. The nonprofit, which was formed in 1989, will celebrate its 35th anniversary next year. Kristen Kidd, a spokesperson for Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, said the U.S. Department of the Interior designated the area as a NNL in 1973 “because it is one of the best examples of outstanding geological resources in the country.” She continued: “The accessibility of the site lends itself to easy public access and opportunities for education and scientific research.” SEE MILESTONE PHOTOS, P5

Hana Shiro, Kyra Jordan and Berlin Sandberg of Golden High School recently won third place in United Launch Alliance’s annual Student Rocket Launch program. A team of Golden High School students are blasting off again. Seniors Kyra Jordan and Berlin Sandberg and junior Hana Shiro recently won third place in United Launch Alliance’s annual Student Rocket Launch program. The competition has students design payloads to be launched in rockets designed by ULA’s college interns. Jordan, Sandberg and Shiro’s payload for the 2023 competition was equipment related to fire risk assessment, including UV radiation, smoke particles and humidity sensors. The GHS students, who’ve been competing since they were freshmen, competed against about a dozen other K-12 teams from across the country. The teams submitted proposals in February and then assembled their payloads for a July launch near Pueblo. This year, the three said the rocket their payload was in got off the

ground but ultimately crashed into the ground. Thus, they didn’t recover their equipment. However, as part of the process, they completed a post-launch reflection, which was scored for the competition. In the years Jordan and Sandberg have done it, they said this was the best they’ve ever placed. They received their award earlier this semester, and the three have decided to donate their $1,000 prize to GHS for engineering equipment. The three said their engineering teacher, Jeremy Swift, first told them about the competition and encouraged them to do it. Jordan and Sandberg did it the first year with another student and said they’ve built on their designs and past experiences as they’ve returned to the competition. For instance, they said their initial payload design was white and blue, which was hard to see against the sky. So, they opted for red designs in later versions. SEE GOLDENITE, P7

Overall, the trio said ULA’s competition has taught them about budgeting, time management and planning and executing their designs. It’s a process very much based in the scientific method — coming up with hypotheses, testing and reevaluating — and the students estimated it takes about 30 hours to complete each year’s project. Jordan said she particularly appreciates how they’ve been able to build on their designs just like a real-life project versus a singular school assignment. Shiro felt similarly, emphasizing how the competitors must have the initiative to compete on their own time. Swift, who’s advised them over the years, said he was very proud of the students for all their hard work. He has only had four GHS students — Jordan, Sandberg, Shiro and one other — compete in it, saying it’s hard to amass interest for an independent project over the summer. But, he emphasized, it’s a unique competition that offers networking opportunities and practical learning experiences. It’s been wonderful to watch the trio’s progress over the years, Swift continued, and he hopes other GHS students will try it. The two seniors were unsure whether they’d be able to compete again, as they’re both gearing up for college next fall. Jordan said she’s interested in studying biophysics but hasn’t decided on a specific college yet. Meanwhile, Sandberg’s applied to both the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, but she’s also considering Colorado School of Mines. Although she’s only a junior, Shiro’s already taking college classes. Once she graduates from GHS, she’s considering pursuing a degree in computer science, audio engineering, or both. The three hoped to see other high school students from Golden and beyond sign up for 2024’s Student Rocket Launch competition. Sandberg said it’s something she’s looked forward to every year, adding, “It’s so cool.”

Jeffco School Board’s newly elected members share campaign lessons and next steps BY SUZIE GLASSMAN SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

With the election dust starting to settle, Jefferson County Public School’s newest board members, Michelle Applegate and Erin Kenworthy, say they’re ready to put aside politics and get down to addressing the issues that resonated with the community on the campaign trail. These two moms, whose children attend Jeffco schools, found knock-

ing on doors, making phone calls and reading emails from constituents eye-opening. “They asked questions about how we’re protecting our LGBTQ youth and how we’re going to protect against anti-Semitism in our schools. The resounding message that I think we heard is that people want our schools to be successful,” Applegate said. In one instance, Applegate found herself speaking on the phone with her now high-schooler’s first-grade

art teacher by surprise. “His wife is also a teacher, and after our five-minute conversation catching up about each other’s lives, I hung up feeling like I was doing the right thing,” she said. “Those types of one-on-one connections reassured me that people can work on hard things, and they can do it in a way that bodes good results and is respectful and feels good at the end of the day,” added Applegate. Applegate said that she and Kenworthy want people to see themselves in the district’s leadership. “Come have a conversation with us,” she said. “We aren’t always going to agree, but it can be done in a respectful manner where we can walk away and feel good about the effort and the conversation.” Kenworthy agreed. “I really hope that we can get to a tone and a tenor on the school board and at those meetings, where we’re all on the same team trying to support our schools and our students so they can be the best that they can be. And that doesn’t have to be divisive,” Kenworthy said. Kenworthy said she was especially impressed by the insightful and

direct questions Jeffco students asked during the student-led forum and that she’s excited to continue those conversations. She believes student input is essential for developing the types of programs that will lead them to successful futures. Kenworthy’s most memorable campaign moment is what she calls “parenting while campaigning.” “I took my kids (first grader and sixth grader) door knocking. They were down the street, and I was trying to have conversations, and then my oldest was on rollerblades, and he was falling over in people’s driveways. We didn’t last long that day,” she said while laughing. Kenworthy also said, at one point, they met a woman who’d just returned from Ukraine, where she’d been doing humanitarian work. “At first, she was annoyed that we knocked on her door, but after she read our flyer, she came back out and told me how grateful she was that we were running for the school board and that I was taking my kids with me to show them that it’s important to be involved in local politics,” she said. Jeffco Sheriff’s Office works to regrow mounted patrol unit

COURTESY OF SGT. JANIE ENRIQUEZ

BY JO DAVIS JDAVIS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Jefferson County deputies recently participated in mounted patrol training hosted by El Paso County Sheriff ’s Office at the Latigo Trails Equestrian Center in El Paso County. Jeffco Sgt. Janie Enriquez said the training is designed for the horses and the riders. “It is something that is done when either you get a new horse or rider to the unit,” she said. Enriquez described the training as a certification course for officers who are new to the mounted patrol unit. According to Enriquez, Jefferson County has six horses and riders on its mounted patrol, and the department would love to add more to help regrow the force. “This is just the beginning of relaunching the Mounted Patrol Unit,” Enriquez said. “It had died down and faded over the last couple of years. Riders retired. Their horses got older. Family circumstances happened.” She explained that the training is

needed to ensure that both horse and rider are prepared not only for duty but also to be in public. “We’re putting them into the public,” Enriquez said. “We must know that they can meet a certain standard for safety.” The training is rigorous to ensure those standards are met. “It’s a 40-hour training, and everything is taught from the ground to the saddle,” Enriquez said. She said training also included basic horse care, bonding, calming techniques and some lessons on the mental health of the horse. “They start off with horse theory in psychology,” Enriquez said. “So you can understand horse behavior, or why these animals act the way they do, based on nature.” She went on to describe calming techniques as key for duty. “You run into a lot of interesting things, especially at festivals and fairs and community events,” Enriquez said. “So learning about a horse’s psychology and how to calm them is kind of where it starts.” SEE TRAINING, P18

What it comes down to, they both said, is that they’re real people with feelings and hopes and dreams and disappointments like everyone else. “Sometimes we expect elected officials to be superhuman and have everything figured out,” Kenworthy said. “And I just wanted to say that I have piles of laundry in my house, and I share a bathroom with my children. Applegate and Kenworthy are both excited to dive into the business of running a district, especially one the size of Jefferson County. With 69,000 students across 155 schools, the district is Colorado’s second largest. “I’m looking forward to getting up to speed on where the organization is and understanding superintendent Tracy Dorlan’s priorities, the cabinet’s goals, and how we can support them in their roles,” Applegate said. Both are impressed with the current board’s High School Reimagined and Family Response Service Teams (FRST) initiatives. The High School Reimagined initiative is a year-long community feedback process that will gather input from high schoolers, educators, business owners, and families to decide how to best prepare high school students for life after graduation. “I love the high school reimagined idea that they’re working on right now. search that comes out of that,” said Applegate. FRST provides families with a single point of contact in the district who can help them resolve their concerns and needs should they need help connecting to the district’s resources. Kenworthy said she loves the idea of providing a case manager to help families navigate issues. “Instead of calling your school and getting a principal and the school secretary involved, and then they’re calling the articulation area superintendent, and so on, now the idea is you have somebody who takes your call and then helps you navigate through it and find answers. I think this service can potentially increase family engagement and support.”

Using Artificial Intelligence to find actual bugs

Farmers today not only deal with climate change but also with pests that could destroy crops. A Fort Lupton HIgh alum’s business seeks to use artificial intelligence PHOTO BY BELEN WARD to tackle the problem.

Fort Lupton grad’s business wants to give farmers an early warning of pests BY BELEN WARD BWARD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Artificial intelligence could be coming to a field near you if a Fort Lupton High School alum has his way. Randy Sasaki, a Fort Lupton grad, leads a company that hopes to create artificially intelligent crop monitoring systems to help agriculture get a jump on insects and other pests that can harm crops. Sasaki said agricultural pests destroyed more than 30% of crops produced in the United States yearly, with $45 billion in losses. The global cost of invasive species is estimated at $1.4 trillion annually, close to 5% of global gross domestic product. “These problems are expanding with increased global temperatures, leading to additional generations per year for some species and allowing pests to infest previously uninhabitable areas,” Sasaki said.

Sasaki’s business, Solarid AR, was awarded a $981,169 grant from the National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation in September. “Initially, I felt relief in receiving the award; it confirmed that we had completed the development of our artificial intelligence technology. Later, I was proud of the accomplishment and excited that we received funding to develop a commercial product for the technology,” Sasaki. His project has three primary goals, according to his grant application to the National Science Foundation. “First, the artificial intelligence technology will have a significant and enduring impact on our society by reducing crop loss and the volumes of toxic chemicals used in agriculture,” he said. “Second, it offers a defense of the general public from invasive and infectious species of insects. And third, it should improve the economies of rural communities.” Sasaki said his smart insect control trap technology is an agriculture monitoring device designed to reduce the $47 billion in annual loss from pests. H

appy Thanksgiving to everybody. I hope you are enjoying the day. I don’t know how many of you actually went “over the river and through the woods” to get to grandmother’s house, but I can tell you that around here it’s usually over the dogs and through the kitchen to get to the food on the dining room table. Beyond that, we didn’t have any travel plans this year. Since most of you were pretty busy on Thursday, you probably aren’t actually reading this until Friday or later. This Friday is Black Friday which means…Well, it doesn’t really mean much of anything anymore, does it? Every store you usually shop at started their big Black Friday sales back in October. The Nostradamus in me is predicting that in ten years they’ll just be calling every Friday “Black Friday.” But I think that’s actually a good thing. It puts the focus back on Thanksgiving as a holiday instead of worrying about camping out overnight in a parking lot to get a deal on some high-ticket item you wanted. Now you can just sit back and relax while the rest of the family starts arguing about politics or something, like back in the good old days.

Now, although I’m fast approaching the time when I’ll be totally consumed by dealing with my Social Security benefits and Medicaid, I’m still a pretty progressive kind of guy. I am proud to say that I have totally embraced John Akal this entire concept of shopping online. It always makes me feel like George Jetson or something. Order something while sitting in the kitchen in your underwear and “poof,” it shows up at your door. I know, there are downsides to this, but free shipping is saving me a bundle during the holidays when most of my family is spread out from Florida to an island off the coast of Alaska. We have to plan pretty far ahead for the last one if we want them to get anything by Christmas. First off, you have to pick something they can use there because they live kind of off the grid. Then we have to ship it all the way to a mail center in the town of Ketchikan. Next we have to let them know it’s there,

AVENUE FLASHES

usually by getting them a message via short wave radio from the mail center. Then they have to take a boat to the mainland, which they only do about once a month to get mail and supplies, and hopefully we get the package there in time for their December crossing of the Tongass Narrows. And you thought getting presents to Chicago was a hassle… So, yes. Free shipping and a delivery email does kind of make you feel good about utilizing whatever modern convenience makes that happen. But that being said, I also enjoy a lot of the more traditional kinds of experiences that go with the Holiday Season and one that has become my absolute favorite is just about to begin. There are certain places that make the shopping experience a fun event in itself and have a way of filling your heart with the joy and cheer that make the whole thing really special every year. For me, that place is the Foothills Art Center and its annual Holiday Art Market. This is the market’s 48th year, and I can say that I have shopped there since it started to find special gifts for those closest to me who I know will appreciate something unique and artistic.

This year’s event runs from Dec. 1 through 29 in pretty much the entire Center. If you haven’t ever been to this one, it’s filled with marvelous creations from some of the area’s top artists featuring pottery, jewelry, glass, fiber, leather, metal, wood, food items, ornaments and handmade greeting cards, which could ostensibly take care of everyone on your list. There will be over 3,000 items to choose from, and it’s also one of the few markets that stay open for a few days after Christmas so you can shop for yourself if you want to. The Holiday Art Market is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The market will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25. Admission is free. The Foothills Art Center is located at 809 15th St. on the corner of Washington Avenue here in Golden. For more information, visit www.foothillsartcenter.org. John Akal is a well-known jazz artist/drummer and leader of the 20-piece Ultraphonic Jazz Orchestra. He also is president of John Akal Imaging, professional commercial photography and multimedia production. He can be reached at jaimaging@aol.com.

It’s a perfect concert for the entire family, especially with the flourishes the CJRO Big Band, led by artistic director Drew Zaremba, add to everything they play. Tickets are on sale at www.coloradojazz.org/concerts.

Wreaths Across America offers a way to thank veterans for their service after they’re gone

n December, Arvada resident Judy Teter will make the trip to the southwest end of Denver, where she ensures that wreaths will be laid to honor the service of thousands of veterans at a military cemetery. “It’s not just about laying the wreath — it’s about honoring our veterans and what they did for us,” Teter said. “There’s a proper way to lay the wreath on the headstone, and you’re also supposed to say the veteran’s name and thank them for their service. “Because a lot of the people that are buried out there don’t have family that comes out and visits them, so we’re honoring them,” Teter continued. Nearly 100 cemetery locations in Colorado will take part in a national event that pays respect to interred veterans with balsam wreaths. Volunteers like Teter across the state work to support national nonprofit Wreaths Across America ahead of National Wreaths Across America Day, occurring this year on Dec. 16, according to a news release. Teter volunteers as a coordinator for the effort to place thousands of wreaths at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, near U.S. Highway 285 and Sheridan Boulevard. Roughly 123,000 veteran graves lie at Fort Logan, according to Wreaths Across America’s website. Teter says her team’s goal is to place 20,000 wreaths there on the day of the ceremony. She works “with the cemetery administration as to what sections they want covered because we do not have enough wreaths that are sponsored to cover the whole cemetery,” Teter said. “But I have a goal to hopefully one day get all of Fort Logan covered,” Teter said.

A few years ago, she found out about volunteering to place flags near headstones on Memorial Day. Through that effort, she also heard about putting out the wreaths near Christmastime, and she jumped aboard. “We wouldn’t be the United States of America with the freedoms that we have if it wasn’t for our servicemen and women,” Teter said. Supporting other families in remembering their loved ones who served is part of her team’s role. On the day of the wreath ceremony, a part of the schedule is set aside for family members who ordered a wreath for their loved one’s specific grave. “That starts at 1 p.m., so it’s a little more quiet for the families to remember, talk to their family member, whatever traditions they have,” Teter said. “Last year, there was a family who had a picnic lunch at their family member’s headstone.” Looking for help

Teter and her volunteer team work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wreaths Across America Day is a success at Fort Logan. But she’s looking for more volunteers and trying to drum up more fundraising support to pay for more wreaths and help cover the costs of the operation. She’s seeking support from businesses who may want to pitch in, too. “From what I understand, that has been a challenge for a lot of the coordinators, is trying to get companies that can donate X amount of (money) to sponsor X amount of wreaths,” Teter said. She’s also looking for a volunteer with fundraising experience in particular. “Or somebody who says, ‘Hey, I know how to (work) a forklift,’ or somebody who says, ‘I own a business or (I can provide) a forklift or pallet jack,’” Teter said. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donating to it is considered tax deductible, according to Teter. If you’re interested in volunteering or helping as a business, you can reach Teter at 720-329-8598 or at judy.ft.logan.waa@gmail.com.

Where your money goes

Wreaths Across America was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that began in 1992, according to a news release. The organization’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington and thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond, the release said. Local sponsorship groups registered through the national program are helping to raise the necessary sponsorships to honor service members laid to rest in participating locations. Since its founding in 2007, Wreaths Across America has partnered with thousands of local nonprofits and civic groups, according to the release. For those looking to donate, the nonprofit seeks $17 per wreath, Teter said. But the money goes a long way. Through the nonprofit’s “PayBack” program, sponsorship groups can earn $5 for every $17 veteran’s wreath sponsored to sup-

port these programs in their communities. By making a $17 sponsorship, “you are also contributing to vital programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans and their families throughout the year,” the news release stated. Some of the nonprofit’s free, year-round programs, according to the release, include: • The Mobile Education Exhibit that travels the country, visiting schools and communities, teaching “the value of our freedom” while acting as an official welcome home center for living Vietnam veterans. • Wreaths Across America Radio, which gives voice to volunteers and service members so that you can hear their stories “of courage and inspiration.” • The Wreaths Across America National Museum, which is free and open to the public. It “highlights the bravery and service of rank-and-file veterans.” • The Remembrance Tree Program, which creates a living memorial of service members giving back to other service members. To order wreaths or offer support

To find a participating location or registered Wreaths Across America group to support in Colorado, visit wreathsacrossamerica.org/About/ LocationAndGroupSearch. You can donate to sponsor a wreath at wreathsacrossamerica. org/About/WaysToSupport. You can also select an option to “honor or remember a specific person” at tinyurl.com/WreathSpecific. “There are different ways to make sure your loved one who served gets a wreath,” Teter said. If your loved one is buried at a cemetery that doesn’t have a Wreaths Across America ceremony but you still want to order a wreath, you can have it sent to you or a family member, according to Teter. Or you can pick it up at Fort Logan at 1 p.m. Dec. 16, she said. “For people who are out of state who order them, we have a volunteer who will place them and send a picture (of the placement) to the family member,” Teter said. You can reach out to Teter at the contact information above with any questions about ordering wreaths.

TRAINING FROM PAGE 9

According to Enriquez, the horsemanship portion of the training comes before the law enforcement training. That includes search and rescue techniques and coming in contact with vehicles, pedestrians and other situations. “Being on a horse in and of itself can be a little bit intimidating,” Enriquez said. “So you just want to make sure you’re using the proper techniques based on the situation.” The training required practice and testing for all of the law enforcement techniques. “We did evidence searching in open fields and properties,” Enriquez said. “We kind of have a bird’s eye view from up there where you can see evidence that may not

November 23, 2023No be found. And we can also cover more ground on horseback.” Part of the training included what to do when kids want to come pet the horses. “I would say the majority of mana patrol is like community events and public relations,” explained Enriquez. “People love animals. And it’s great for kids to be able to come up and meet the horses and ask questions and interact with officers while they’re with this awesome animal.” Enriquez said that officers welcome kids’ curiosity about the horses. However, there is a safe way to engage with the animal. “The best thing to do is just say hi to the deputy and approach the horse from the front where the horse can see you,” she explained. “And then just asked the deputy if this is a good spot and if we can pet your horse and we’ll always make it happen.”

Support for failed Prop HH eroded when property tax relief plan was first introduced BY JESSE PAUL THE COLORADO SUN

A screenshot from the May 1 news conference in Gov. Jared Polis’ office during which the bill placing Proposition HH on the ballot was rolled out. SCREENSHOT FROM STATE OF COLORADO

Support for Proposition HH started to unravel from the moment the bill placing the Colorado property tax relief plan on the November 2023 ballot was unveiled by Gov. Jared Polis’ at a news conference in his office at the state Capitol. The governor was flanked at the May 1 event by high-profile supporters of the measure — liberals and conservatives. Polis pointed to their presence as evidence that the proposal was a well-crafted approach to a problem that had dogged state lawmakers since voters repealed the Gallagher Amendment in 2020, removing guardrails

from the state’s property tax system. “I certainly look forward to working with the business community and many other supporters to make sure that voters are aware of the importance of delivering on these property tax cuts,” Polis said, adding that he was “confident” the initiative would be approved by Coloradans. But the reality was many of the people standing next to the governor at that news conference either had doubts about the complex policy, which also would have boosted funding for schools and cut into the amount of money for state taxpayer refunds, or didn’t fully understand how it worked, according

to The Colorado Sun’s reporting. That weak foundation was reflected in how voters rejected Proposition HH, a 10-year property tax relief and state spending overhaul, by an 18 percentage-point margin last week in one of Polis’ biggest policy failures since he became governor in 2019. The legislature was set to gather at the Capitol starting Nov. 17 for a special session to try to quickly offer Coloradans property tax relief for the 2023 tax year before reconvening in January to take another stab at a long-term solution. The negotiations will be colored by Proposition HH’s political collapse. SEE PROP HH, P39

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter sports Orediggers kick off 202324 winter sports seasons

gers back to the RMAC tournament championships and NCAA Division II tournament in 2023-24. Majok Deng, a guard and graduate transfer from Pepperdine, is already putting up serious numbers for Mines, along with freshman guard Markus Pastorcic-Straun. The Orediggers’ first home game of the season is Nov. 20 against Williams Baptist.

Hard to believe, but 2023 is wrapping up. For the Colorado School of Mines winter sports teams, though, the end of the year is really the beginning as the Orediggers have kicked off their 2023-24 seasons. The Mines swimming team was actually wrapping up its 2023 slate Nov. 15-18 in Grand Junction, and won’t be diving in again until the new year. Meanwhile, the Orediggers on the basketball court and wrestling mat still have plenty of home action in late November and early December. The indoor track & field teams, meanwhile, don’t have their first meets until early December. As they ramp up for their 2023-24 seasons, the Transcript offers a look at each of the seven winter sports teams: Men’s basketball

The Mines men’s basketball team tipped off in warmer climes. The Orediggers played their first 2023 games in Lakeland, Florida, where they played No. 16 Bentley and No. 25 Mercyhurst at the Nov. 4-5 Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. On Nov. 4, Mines fell to Bentley 6951, but rallied against Mercyhurst the next day, winning 65-62. Afterward, the Orediggers headed for San Antonio for the Nov. 10-11 South Central Regional Crossover. The team won another close one to Lubbock Christian 61-59, but lost to St. Mary’s 87-77 the next day. The Orediggers were scheduled for one more game on the road — Nov. 18 at UCCS — before a three-game home slate. This includes a Dec. 1 match-up with No. 14 Colorado Mesa. Meanwhile, the Mines women’s basketball team tipped off 2023 action at home, beating both St. Mary’s and St. Edward’s. The Nov. 11 victory against St. Edward’s marked Coach Brittany Simpson’s 200th career wins. The Orediggers were scheduled for back-to-back games in Texas, first Nov. 16 at No. 6 Texas Woman’s and then Nov. 18 at West Texas A&M. Like their male counterparts, the Orediggers are also hoping to return to the conference tournament championship game and the NCAA Division II tournament. Redshirt senior guard Ashley Steffeck and her teammates have demonstrated the firepower to do it, winning their first two games 81-68 and 76-68. Steffeck had monster stats against St. Edward’s. She had a double-double with 13 rebounds and 31 points, including five treys; three assists; three steals; and one block. Redshirt senior Loralee Stock put in legwork for Mines, notching seven points, three assists and four steals in 23 minutes. Meanwhile, freshman Emma Sixta had a strong outing with four points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals. The team will be at home for some Thanksgiving weekend action Nov. 24-25, as they host Cameron, No. 15 Regis and No. 21 MSU Billings. They’ll also be at home for their Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 games before going on the road for the rest of 2023. Wrestling

The Mines wrestling team won its first dual of the season Nov. 9, destroying Otero College 56-0. It was scheduled to compete at the Nov. 18 Younes Hospitality Open in Kearney, Nebraska. Afterward, the Orediggers will be back at Volk Gym Nov. 30 for a dual against New Mexico Highlands. The Orediggers have some very promising rookies, three of whom placed at the Nov. 5 Mines Rookie Open, as well as solid returning wrestlers. Mines took fifth place at last year’s NCAA Super Region VI Championship and sent four wrestlers to nationals, and will try to maintain that level of competition in 2023-24. Swimming

The nationally ranked men’s and women’s swimming teams were 2-2 going into their final meet of 2023. The Orediggers were competing Nov. 15-18 at the TYR/CMU Invitational in Grand Junction, and hoping to finish out their 2023 slate strong. The Mines teams won’t have another meet until Jan. 5 at Denver. Men’s swimmers Ronan Lauinger, Luca Burns and Braden Hunt have put in major laps for the Orediggers thus far. Lauinger set a Mines pool record in the 400-yard individual medley Nov. 3 against Colorado

Indoor track & field

The Mines track & field teams will be looking to build on last year’s strong indoor and outdoor seasons, which boasted three individual national champions, several All-Americans and other postseason honors. The Orediggers will host their Alumni Classic Dec. 1-2, before heading to their first big meet of the season — the Dec. 8-9 UCCS PreHoliday Invite. The Mines track & field teams will host their annual Winter Classic Jan. 26-27 and a Pre-Conference meet Feb. 16-17. PROP HH FROM PAGE 19

“We had a legislative product that was workable and reflected the necessary compromises at the Capitol,” said state Sen. Chris Hansen, a Denver Democrat who helped write the bill that put Proposition HH before voters, “but it did not translate well to the ballot.” Colorado Concern, a nonprofit representing business CEOs in the state, was one the groups that worked closely with the governor’s office to draft Proposition HH. The organization’s CEO, Mike Kopp, was at the Polis’ news conference where the measure was rolled out. He was name-checked by the governor. But even Colorado Concern’s support for the initiative was lukewarm. “HH didn’t represent our preferred policy,” Kopp said this week, “but it was the only thing that was going to be offered to voters that would provide any kind of tax relief.” The deep-pocketed nonprofit publicly endorsed the measure, but its support effectively stopped there. The group didn’t financially back the campaign to pass the initiative because of policy and political disagreement with how the proposition affected Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights refunds. “The history of TABOR elections in the state shows that voters generally prefer to keep TABOR intact,” said Kopp, a Republican who is a former state senator. “Whether somebody really loves the policy or not, it’s separate from the question of: ‘Is it something that the voters would adopt?’” J.J. Ament, the president and CEO of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, was also at Polis’ news conference in May. He too was cited

by the governor as an example of the Republican support for the bill. But Ament said he wasn’t happy with the end result — and the chamber ended up taking a neutral stance on the initiative. “We were at the press conference to support a legislative solution to a property tax emergency with the idea that we would also backfill local government,” he told The Sun over the summer. “What the legislature gave us, when we actually got the bill, did a whole bunch more than that.” There were other signs that the show of support at the news conference was, at best, fragile. A real estate agent spoke in support of the proposal, but the Colorado Association of Realtors opposed Proposition HH and spent gobs of money to fight its passage because of how it offered less of a break on people’s second homes. Even the Bell Policy Center, a liberal fiscal policy nonprofit, wavered in its support of HH because of the messaging surrounding it. Scott Wasserman, who leads the organization and stood next to Polis at the May news conference, called it a “political Goldilocks,” with something for people from different political points of view to hate. Democrats in the legislature, meanwhile, privately grumbled that the proposal, primarily drafted by the governor’s office, was dropped on the General Assembly too late in the session and without enough input. They were asked to trust that the governor’s office had gotten it right, but when some dug into the legislation, they didn’t love what they saw, particularly the lack of aid for renters, which led to on-the-fly changes that only compounded the political fissures around the measure. Finally, Republicans and local governments complained that they

were left out of the negotiations entirely, or not listened to when they were let in the room. The House GOP caucus walked out of the Capitol on the final day of the 2023 legislative session in protest. Kevin Bommer, who leads the Colorado Municipal League, which represents the state’s cities, said he didn’t see the bill placing Proposition HH on the ballot until after the governor’s news conference unveiling the policy. “We opposed it immediately, along with the other local government associations,” Bommer told The Sun this week. In a statement to The Sun, Conor Cahill, a spokesman for the governor, said “Colorado is in need of a long-term way to keep property taxes low, and Proposition HH was an idea in that vein.” But even Polis, reflecting last week after Proposition HH’s failure, said the measure was flawed. The governor, speaking at a news conference where he announced the special legislative session, said the initiative was too “long and confusing” and that it should have been broken up into different pieces. That was considered, but ultimately rejected, when the policy was drafted, The Sun has learned. Polis said he thought the way the initiative would have reduced state taxpayer refunds by raising the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights cap on government growth and spending was the most unpopular part of the proposal. “There were policies in HH I supported and policies I didn’t support,” he said. “Overall, I thought it was a good package.” Senate President Steve Fenberg, a Boulder Democrat and one of the prime sponsors of the bill that placed HH on the ballot, said this week that the measure was borne

out of fears that conservatives would put a further-reaching initiative with no reimbursement money for schools and local governments before voters. “We were sort of between a rock and a hard place,” he said. “It was, like: ‘Do we put an alternative out there or do we just see what happens?’ You can probably debate what was the right call, but we decided: ‘Let’s put something out there for voters to have as an alternative.’” By mid-summer, it was clear the conservative ballot measure was never going to materialize for the November 2023 election. Democrats, well aware of the shaky support for Proposition HH, decided to move forward with the initiative anyway. The measure ended up faring worse than any question raising tax revenue on the statewide ballot since 2018. This story was printed through a news sharing agreement with The Colorado Sun, a journalist-owned news outlet based in Denver that covers the state.
