2018 GOLDEN GUIDE

Welcome to

Those words are more than just a standard greeting around here though. They embody a philosophy that the community believes in so much we wrote it on a giant archway smack-dab in the middle of our downtown.

Games kayak races, or the knobby tires and steep climbs of the Golden Giddyup mountain bike race. Through all these different elements, from the nostalgic significance of a western art gallery, to the most upscale and cosmopolitan of wine bars, there is one constant to Golden -- a generous and welcoming spirit.

From nearly the very beginning, Golden has been many things — a mining camp, farming settlement, a place of higher learning, a center of industry.

Well ... that and the beer. The beer’s been pretty constant too. From the Coors brewery’s storied history, to the latest craft brewer’s small-batch concoction, Golden has that subject well covered. In fact, read our story on page 11 to learn more about what might be the state’s oldest saloon, right next to that big arch.

Today, the city is much the same. The rich history of the area is still celebrated and on display at places like the Clear Creek History Park and the annual Buffalo Bill Days celebration. Yet at the same time the people and technologies that will fuel the future can be found at the Colorado School of Mines and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

This guide is broken into several sections to help you quickly find a few suggestions for whatever you might be looking for, from shopping, to eateries, to cultural and recreational activities. There is even a map to help you find your way around. Additional visitor information is available at VisitGolden.com.

The people of Golden are much the same. They cherish traditions and history, on full display during the annual Olde Golden Christmas Candlelight Walk and July 4th Golden Lions Park Festival. However, they also embrace the new and exciting: Whether that be the outdoor adventures of the Golden

Thank you for visiting our community. We hope you enjoy your time here, and once again, welcome to Golden!

There is a name missing from the masthead of this edition of the Golden Guide, which has been a mainstay for the past 30 years — John Tracy.

Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave. By the time Tracy was involved in the printing, around 1987, the covers were in full color.

For much of that 30-year span Tracy was the driving force that helped bring this publication to life. He helped sell the ads, organize the directory, and even helped take photos and write the stories when needed.

Nowadays, the guide is entirely in color, and includes more website addresses than phone numbers. Yet, the goal of the publication remains the same, to provide a handy and entertaining way of letting the world know about the shopping, dining, culture and entertainment options that abound in and around the city.

His home in Golden reflected his dedication to this publication, with decades of back issues taking up space, and layout pages scattered about. “He never missed a year, ever,” longtime coworker and friend Barb Stolte said. Family and friends recall that even once the guide was printed his work wasn’t finished. Many years he would drive for hours, hand delivering dozens of bundles to the many tourist attractions that surround the city he loved. Tracy died Aug. 1, 2017, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife Jane, three children, two step-children, nine grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren. The very first issue of the Golden Guide came out in 1981. It featured a nature shot on the cover, was 22 pages, and featured some of the same attractions featured in this year’s guide, including the Colorado Railroad Museum and

In his many work endeavors — the Golden Transcript, the Golden Guide, and countless projects with area chambers of commerce — Tracy was something of a living Golden Guide, always trying to spread the good word about the city, and welcoming every newcomer with a smile. For his efforts Tracy was honored by the Golden Chamber of Commerce, the Golden Living Landmarks Association, and was even named the grand marshal, along with his wife Jane, of the Buffalo Bill Days parade. Add to that list of accomplishments his 30 consecutive Golden Guides — Tracy helped put the finishing touches on the 2017 Golden Guide just four months before his death. It is with deep appreciation that the staff of Colorado Community Media dedicates this edition of the Golden Guide to its long-serving champion, John Tracy.

A ROSY PAST

and promising future

The Buffalo Rose set to reopen in the fall of 2018 BY CHRISTY STEADMAN

Heading northwest through downtown Golden, just before you pass under the Howdy Folks welcome arch and over Clear Creek on Washington Avenue sits the Buffalo Rose, boasting more than 150 years as a tourist destination and local gathering spot. “The Buffalo Rose is truly a piece of Golden,” said owner Chris Cone. On Nov. 19, 2017, the Buffalo Rose, a longtime live music venue located 1119 Washington Ave., closed to undergo a remodel and become a “better version of itself,” Cone said. It is on schedule to reopen in fall 2018. Being an “authentic watering hole,” Cone said, “it will stay true to its most recent use.” The venue will continue to serve as a restaurant, full bar and event venue with a private lounge area and an outdoor patio. The remodel includes a brand-new commercial kitchen, and will serve a new take on classic American and Latin American dishes.

This project is particularly exciting because it shows people what the Buffalo Rose has been through the years. It spans three centuries. It is an iconic Golden property. — Owner Chris Cone

Along with the stage to host live music, the venue will be available for other kinds of programs, such as family game or seniors’ dance nights, and private events, such as gatherings for school teams and weddings, charitable dinners and corporate conferences, Cone said. But perhaps the best part of the remodel is that the historical aesthetics of the building will remain. Cone noted that some of the most interesting things about the Buffalo Rose are its architectural features that range from the 19th Century into the 21st Century. PAGE 13

2018 GOLDEN GUIDE | DINE

The Buffalo Rose “has a true claim to being the oldest saloon in Colorado, having operated on the same site since 1859,” said historian Richard Gardner. In fact, as a saloon, it survived Prohibition by converting to soft drinks and back, he added. It first opened as the International Bowling Saloon and was a two-story false front building made of hewn pine logs and boards, Gardner said. “It looked straight out of the Old West,” he said, “which it was.” Among the tales told of those early years are a couple of shootouts and meetings of the Colorado Territorial Legislature. “The best part of this project to date has been peeling back the layers of history and uncovering stories dating back to the late 1800s,” said Dan Thoemke, the founder and co-owner of DT Construct Inc., which is the general contractor in charge of the renovation. “We are thrilled to accent these stories through our construction and remodeling process, allowing this community to experience the same richness and perspective when they walk through the building.” And there has been several unique finds worth noting, Gardner said. A hidden window opening has been found that was boarded over in 1905, complete with an original 1871 window panel, he said. The window panel is “the oldest such thing remaining in Golden,” Gardner said. “It has not been seen by the general public since the 1890s.” Another historic find has been the trusses of the Golden Plunge — a public swimming pool built in the 1920s, which, at the time, was the largest such indoor pool in Colorado, Gardner said. Those who love ghost stories can find plenty surrounding the Buffalo Rose, but perhaps the venue’s most famous ghost is a little girl. The story goes that

Layers of the Buffalo Rose are revealed during a remodel. The venue closed on Nov. 19 last year for the remodel, and is on schedule to re-open this fall. Photos courtesy Dave Powers

her spirit remains after drowning in the pool sometime in the 1920's. But she is not the only famous one associated with the Golden Plunge — the late Nils Christiansen, a Colorado School of Mines student and Olympic swimmer, trained for the 1936 Berlin Summer Games in the pool. When he returned to Golden in 1938, Christiansen became the Plunge’s swimming instructor, Gardner said. “And the Plunge proudly advertised for people to let an Olympic champion teach you to swim,” he said. The Iler Block is Jefferson County’s oldest frame storefront, Gardner said. Through the years, the businesses that have come and gone have been a

meat market, drugstore, department store, an automobile dealership/ garage, a confectionery and a couple of restaurants. The barbershop operated for 111 years, from 19052016, Gardner said. It was annexed into the Buffalo Rose complex in 1985, and at which time, it became the well-known live music venue that has hosted countless genres of music and bands of all kinds ranging from famous national acts to local favorites. “This project is particularly exciting because it shows people what the Buffalo Rose has been through the years,” Cone said of the remodel. “It spans three centuries. It is an iconic Golden property.” ¢

HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS OF GOLDEN VisitGolden.com

Golden was the original territorial capital of Colorado and a hub of activity in the late 1800’s. Gold seekers started arriving in 1858, and Golden City was founded in 1859. It became a supply hub for miners who panned for gold in Clear Creek. With all the activity, visitors began to plant roots and create neighborhoods. Golden has eight historic neighborhoods for visitors to explore. HOGBACK GEOLOGICAL EXHIBIT Located off I-70 near the US Hwy 40 exit

The exhibit is a fascinating place for those interested in geology. This geological cross-section site has an intriguing walk along the rock face. Highway construction has exposed layers of earth. With the help of plaques that explain the formation of the cliffs along the Eastern Slope, visitors will get a glimpse into the geological makeup of the area.

CLEAR CREEK TRAIL

NORTH TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILS

APEX PARK

EASY 1.6 MILES OF TRAILS 30 MINUTES TO 1.5 HOURS

EASY TO MODERATE 17 MILES OF TRAILS 30 MINUTES TO 2 HOURS

MODERATE 9.5 MILES OF TRAILS 1 TO 4 HOURS

The most popular network of trails in Golden are those that wind along both banks of Clear Creek.

An open space park nestled in the north end of Golden, the nearly-2,000 acre North Table Mountain Park has the uncanny ability to simultaneously make you feel someplace quite wild while still giving you an expansive view of the metro area.

Put simply, Apex Park lives up to its name.

The trails are easily accessed via Vanover Park at Water and Ford Streets, the Visitor Center at Washington and 10th Streets, the Library at 10th and Illinois Streets, Lions Park at 10th and Maple Streets and from 6th Avenue Trail. With access to several parks, the Golden Visitor’s Center, city library, and Golden History Park the trails make for a pleasant way to access much of what the city has to offer. In the summer, folks looking to wade in the creek, or even inner tube down the rippling water will find designated creek entry points along the path. In December, the creek is aglow every night with thousands of festive lights on virtually every tree. Anglers, goldpanners, and adventuring cyclists may want to go further afield, following the stream upwards into Clear Creek Canyon, or follow paved paths to the east, connecting with the expansive trail networks of Wheat Ridge and beyond.

Wildlife thrives amidst the rocky cliffs of the mesa. There is a seasonal closure of Rim Rock Trail from Feb. 1 to July 31 to allow raptors to successfully fledge along the northern cliffs. Also, an ongoing study is tracking more than a dozen rattlesnakes that call the park home. Not to worry though. Give the animals a respectful amount of space, and they will happily leave you alone as well, free to enjoy your time hiking, rock climbing, or mountain biking along the park’s 17 miles.

Whether you’re looking for a rugged climb with great views, or want to challenge your technical skills as a mountainbiker, this is just about as good as it gets for Front Range fun. It is a popular, accessible foothills experience minutes from downtown Golden, that offers a wonderful variety in terrain. From the Jefferson County Open Space website: A stream runs alongside a trail in part of the park, and a dense forest provides shady areas on the west end. This park is popular for mountain biking as it offers more technical trails and a steep challenge up Lookout Mountain. Be aware, there are directional restrictions for Apex Park’s trails: Apex, Argos and Enchanted Forest Trails are directional-use trails. Bicyclists are required to ride in one direction only (uphill/west) on odd-numbered calendar days. Photos by Shanna Fortier

humble hospitality

W

hatever brings you to Golden — a wedding, a graduation, a wellearned vacation — few things let you truly enjoy a place more than spending the night. Golden is no exception. Consider the magic of a moonlit stroll along Clear Creek before bed, followed by getting to see the sunrise over the table mountains. Luckily the city offers some unique lodging opportunities, which are listed on the following pages. If you are looking to stay the night, here are a few tips to make the most of your stay!

First, you have some choices when it comes to nightlife. The Bridgewater Grill at the Golden Hotel features a wonderful creekside dining experience, but also a full bar and often has live musical performers during the summer months. The Miner’s Alley Playhouse, in the heart of downtown, features live theater most every Thursday-Saturday evening. Known for its many live music and entertainment events, the Buffalo Rose at 1119 Washington Avenue is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018 (read more on page 11). Second, you’ve got no shortage of breakfast spots to wake up to. Cafe 13 has a wonderful selection of baked goods and strong coffee. The Golden

Diner is a local favorite for classic American breakfast fare. Third, a great way to start or end the day is with a drive up Lookout Mountain. Whether it’s to see the stars and the lights of Denver twinkle in the night, or to see the sun rise over the Great Plains and burn off the morning mist, the views are hard to beat. No matter what brought you to town, we hope you enjoy your stay, and make yourself at home!
