Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy: Does It Work? Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a relatively new way to treat a variety of musculoskeletal injuries. The process involves taking your body’s own natural healing cells, the platelets, out of the body via a blood sample, concentrating them by centrifugation, and then injecting them back into the body at the injury site to induce a naturally occurring healing response.

Platelets are kind of like a group of construction workers. When a tear or cut in tissue occurs, the platelets work to create a scaffold, bringing those tissues back together and creating collagen and scar tissue to heal the torn and damaged tissue.

Platelets are kind of like a group of construction workers. When a tear or cut in tissue occurs, the platelets work to create a scaffold, bringing those tissues back together and creating collagen and scar tissue to heal the torn and damaged tissue. Additionally, they release a variety of growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines to help induce this healing response and fix the painful problem. Unlike traditional anti-inflammatory medications, which merely mask the symptoms, PRP offers the opportunity for real healing to occur and problems to be fixed. Tendon, ligament and joint injuries are the most common conditions that are being successfully treated with PRP, particularly tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, knee osteoarthritis and rotator cuff tears. Additionally, there is evidence to support PRP’s use in back pain caused by a torn disc.

Is PRP Effective? Research regarding PRP’s effectiveness shows a wide variety of findings. However, the latest studies on a newer form of PRP known as leukocyte-poor PRP show that PRP seems to be more effective than traditional cortisone shots in reducing

pain and improving function. I use leukocyte-poor PRP in my practice because the studies show better evidence of its effectiveness. Leukocytes are known to have metalloproteinases in them, which are thought to degrade tissue and cause damage. The results my patients have had with PRP have been promising. Most of my patients that have had a PRP injection have had some improvement in their pain and function if not complete resolution.

Administering PRP Therapy At the Center for Spine and Orthopedics, we administer PRP very precisely using image guidance with an ultrasound or in the case of disc pain, with fluoroscopy to ensure that the PRP gets to the exact site of injury. Typically, only one PRP injection is necessary to be effective. Occasionally, booster shots are required, often depending on whether you re-injure your tissue. It is kind of like fixing a flat tire on your bike. You may be able to fix it and ride another 5,000 miles or you might run over another nail and need another repair. Generally, it can take up to six or eight

weeks to know how effective a single PRP injection has been. The length of time varies depending on how quickly an individual heals. I recommend PRP as an option when discussing nearly any musculoskeletal pain complaint with my patients, particularly when traditional treatment options have failed or are otherwise not indicated. —Matthew McAuliffe, MD (Note: Dr. Matthew McAuliffe is a boardcertified physiatrist at the Center for Spine and Orthopedics in Thornton. Prior to joining the center in January, Dr. McAuliffe completed a fellowship in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine at the prestigious Bodor Clinic in Napa, CA. He specializes in diagnosing and treating complex problems using a wide array of non-surgical procedures, such as regenerative medicine, including PRP. To learn more about PRP, attend Dr. McAuliffe’s lecture on osteoarthritis and pain relief from 1-2 p.m. on May 2 at the Thornton Senior Center. To reserve a seat, call 303-255-7850.

When it comes to your heart, you want only the very best Not just for you, but for the ones you care about and who depend on you.

Every day steps to prevent heart disease

Centura Health Heart and Vascular Network can help, with information on how to keep your heart at its best, like how to eat healthier, tips to keep you moving and exercising your heart muscle, screening tools to check out your risk of heart disease, physicians and other providers that can help you stay on track and improve your health.

No matter what your age, whether you’re 20 or 60, you can make lifestyle choices that will lower your risk of heart disease and prevent heart attack and stroke. The following healthy habits and choices can be part of your everyday health habits that keep your heart healthy and lower your risk of heart disease.

Take into account the following statistics and numbers of people and families impacted each year by deaths caused by heart disease, heart attack and stroke. The key to not being a statistic is prevention: • Approximately 600,000 people in the US die from heart disease every year • Every year about 935,000 people in the US have heart attacks • Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the US

Know your numbers. It’s important to know your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers, as high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol can be a key indicator of impending heart disease, heart attack or stroke. Regular checkups and having blood pressure and cholesterol screenings will help you and your doctor determine if you need to make changes to lower your numbers and lower your risk. The first step is making an appointment with your primary care doctor to talk about your heart. Eating for health. Your nutrition choices matter and can impact many factors that lead to heart disease including blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Eating heart healthy is really fairly simple and involves making choices to eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole-grains

and low-fat, lean meats. Need some help? Centura offers low cost nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian.

go for a bike ride, take the dog for a walk or jog, swim or do water aerobics at the local rec center.

Exercise can be fun. According to the American Heart Association, 30 minutes of physical activity on 5 or more days a week helps lower blood pressure, cholesterol and keeps your weight down. You don’t have to go to a gym to exercise and move. No matter what your age or ability, there are all kinds of ways you can incorporate physical activity and movement into your everyday lifestyle -- walk to school with your kids, take the stairs instead of the elevator, choose a parking spot at the end of the parking lot,

Kick it! Smoking not only increases your risk of heart attack and stroke, but also significantly reduces your ability to recover from a cardiac event or stroke when one occurs. Make the choice to quit and along with a long list of other health benefits, you cut your risk of heart disease in half. We know quitting is hard, so if you’re ready to quit there are a number of support programs available. Learn more about our smoking cessation program or find more help from the American Heart Association quit smoking resource.

Planning for Aging Do you know a senior, or are you a senior, that has experienced a life change such as the death of a spouse, change in medical condition, or financial shift? Change can be difficult, but by taking the time to do a complete assessment, research and create options, and prepare an action plan, a smooth transition can be achieved. Start the process with an assessment of the senior’s current situation and a projection of future needs and goals. The assessment should include looking at 5 major areas: Financial, Insurance, Medical, Legal and Housing. 1. Financial - Creating a budget to include the senior’s expenses and income will show how their money is flowing. Additionally, compiling information about assets and liabilities is critical to long-term planning. 2. Insurance – Reviewing insurance policies such as life, long-term care, health and Medicare is important. Ask for assistance so that the senior is clear how the insurance benefits will impact future decisions about care. 3. Medical - A complete understanding of the senior’s medical conditions is critical to long-term planning. Additional information may be needed from the

senior’s doctors to complete this part of the process. 4. Legal – Review all legal documents to see if all pertinent documents are there, are still all up to date, and reflect the current wishes of the senior. A consultation with an attorney may be needed.

Are you overwhelmed with caring for a loved one? Are you unsure what help a senior family member needs? do you feel you don’t know where to turn for options?

5. Housing – Some things to review are: Can the senior remain where they are long term? What is needed help the senior remain there and/or what are the options if the senior were to move?

Compassionate Senior Guidance

Once the assessment is completed, the next step is to project future needs and determine the senior’s goal for aging. When this information has been obtained, it is time to move forward researching options and preparing an action plan. Having someone to support you through this process, assist with gathering information, and help guide important conversations, can help things go more smoothly.

From assessing a senior’s situation, needs & goals, to researching & developing options, we are there to help create an action plan for the senior and their family.

We can help guide you through the assessment and planning process to make the transition easier. Contact Becky today at Compassionate Senior Guidance for your Free Initial Consultation 303-9812815 or becky@compassionateseniorguidance.com.

You Might Have Sleep Apnea and Not Know It Did you know that by some estimates, 9 percent of women and 24 percent of men have some form of sleep apnea, but only about 15 – 20 percent have been diagnosed? Once women reach post-menopausal age, their likelihood of having sleep apnea is about the same as men. Even children and infants can have sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is by

far the most common form. The muscles in the tongue and throat relax and close the airway during sleep, preventing oxygen from reaching the brain. The brain sends a signal to the muscles to open, and often the sufferer wakes with a gasp or snort when he or she resumes breathing. This cycle repeats continually throughout the night, preventing the sufferer from getting a good night’s sleep.

Why is Sleep Apnea Often Undiagnosed? Symptoms of OSA (snoring, fatigue, depression, difficulty concentrating, sore throat, dry mouth, headaches) mimic so many other conditions, that it is often overlooked. It also only occurs during sleep, so if you sleep alone, no one may know you snore and gasp throughout the night.

How Can a Custom Dental Appliance Help Snoring and Sleep Apnea? Custom-fitted dental devices have proven to be a successful treatment for many OSA sufferers and snorers. They are less cumbersome and more comfortable than other alternatives such as CPAP or surgery. At Refresh Snoring and Sleep Apnea Center, we can recommend a device that is most appropriate for your individual situation. Our solutions are proven to be effective and are FDA cleared Class II medical devices that have many advantages including: • Insurance: Most medical insurance plans cover dental appliances to treat sleep apnea. At Refresh, we are “in-network” with most insurance companies (including Medicare) and can find out for you if you’re covered. • Comfort: Many patients who have tried traditional treatment and found it too uncomfortable or too cumbersome have found success with oral appliance

therapy. • Fast Results: Most patients grow accustomed to the dental appliance within a few days or weeks and it begins providing relief from sleep disordered breathing immediately. • Portable: Unlike the more cumbersome CPAP device that requires electricity, the oral device fits in a pocket and can be taken

anywhere, making travel much more feasible. • Ease of Use: Patients can drink and talk while wearing the device, unlike some of the other treatment options. • Silent and Less Noticeable: OSA sufferers and their sleep partners are sometimes bothered by the noise and presence of breathing devices like the CPAP.

OSA is not easily detected during a routine physical exam, nor are there any routine tests that would pick it up. In addition, most people with OSA have other medical conditions such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, dementia, stroke and insomnia, so many doctors focus on those conditions instead, and miss the sleep apnea.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep A custom dental appliance is comfortable. In studies, 88% of patients reported regular use of the appliance. The life expectancy of these type of appliances is 3 to 5 years, and all of our devices have a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Most importantly they are clinically effective. Fifteen independent studies demonstrate the device’s significant clinical benefits and 91% of patients reported improvement in sleep quality.

Making Braces More Affordable 1. The best way to keep costs under control is to have orthodontic treatment only once in your life, and the best way to ensure this is to have it done properly the first time around. Do your homework when choosing an orthodontist! This is the most important part, and it is important to understand that braces are not a commodity. That is, two orthodontists can use the exact same braces, and the patient may end up with radically different results. The orthodontist’s decisions ultimately determine the quality of care that you receive (not the braces or brand of braces). Check the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) website and the orthodontist locator to check if your provider is an orthodontic specialist at mylifemysmile.org. You can then check if the orthodontist is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) at www.americanboardortho.com/portal/ public/. 2. Take full advantage of Health Savings Accounts (HSA), or Flex Spending plans. These can be set up through your employer’s human resource dept. or through a local bank. The power of using these accounts is that you do not pay taxes from your paycheck for what you put towards braces or invisalign, which could save you well over 20%! Our staff can help you with

proper timing in starting treatment to take full advantage of HSA and Flex benefits. 3. Take full advantage of your dentalorthodontic insurance. We participate with most insurance providers, which means that a large portion of your fees could be covered. Give us a call and we will gladly check on your available benefits. 4. Take advantage of our 0% interest in house financing options. We gladly offer extended monthly payment plans, and since there is no interest and is financed 100% through our practice, this really helps most families. We also offer discounts if you wish to pay in full at the start of treatment. Either way, we will always find a way to make things very comfortable for your family and your lifestyle. 5. We offer discounts for multiple family members, and discuss the various costs for different types of braces, clear braces, and clear aligners. We are also kind to those who serve our country in the Armed Forces, and the police officers and firemen who protect us. Give us a call- you will be surprised how easy it is to get an amazing smile very affordably!

Do You Need Emergency Dental Care? Any trauma to the mouth that may cause bleeding and lacerations to the gums, and dislodge or fracture teeth. By Michelle O. Haynes, DMD It is important to know what kinds of injuries require emergency dental care, so you can make sure that your family’s teeth are taken care of. Accidents can happen at all times of the day or night. Some oral injuries may need immediate treatment, while others can wait until normal business hours. Some common types of mouth injuries include cracked, broken, or knocked out teeth, which can be a result of biting on a piece of food that is too hard, a sports-related injury, a fall,

or any other type of accident. Depending on the severity of the injury and where the tooth is located, it is possible that a chipped tooth or minor fracture can wait for a call to the dentist during normal business hours. However, if the crack is severe, there is a large piece of the tooth missing, or the tooth has nerve damage or is knocked out completely, you should seek immediate attention.

problem, we will make every effort to get you the treatment you need as soon as possible. Again, call 303-327-9240 to reach Highlands Ranch Smiles for help with your dental emergencies. Remember prevention is alway the best measure. Here are some simple precautions you can take to avoid accident and injury to the teeth: • Wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or recreational activities. • Avoid hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth. • Use scissors, NEVER your teeth, to cut things. Remember, what ever the dental sitituation, it is important to see a dentist because if left untreated, a dental emergency can lead to serious complications.

Making Educated Healthcare Decisions With so many healthcare options which should I choose? It’s difficult and given that more of the cost of healthcare is being borne by us, the consumer, it’s important that we know our options before we actually need to use them.

the ER rate. What is considered an urgent care visit vs. an ER visit may vary greatly in these facilities so ask for billing specifics before you are taken back. Capabilities will be at the ER level and services are available 24/7.

Primary care offices typically focus on wellness, management of chronic disease and low acuity illness, such as colds or flu. They are usually the least expensive choice and should be first on your list. Everyone should have a pediatrician, family practitioner or internist that they call their own.

Emergency departments play an important role in our communities for many reasons. If you have a concern that you feel may threaten your life, limb or eyesight, an ER is the most appropriate place to go. Free standing ER’s occupy sites in the neighborhoods and are commonly confused with urgent cares. They are NOT. If you see “Emergency” on the building, expect your services and charges to be at the ER level. If you need admission to the hospital to see a specialist or to have surgery, a free standing ER will send you to their hospital.

Urgent care centers are next on the healthcare hit parade. According to the Urgent Care Association of America, “Urgent care is appropriate for acute illness or injury that is not life or limbthreatening.” Centers typically have significantly extended hours when compared with primary care offices and are able to perform some labs, imaging, and procedures. Not all centers have the same capabilities. Read the reviews and call if you have any doubts. If you live in a neighborhood with a “Hybrid ER/Urgent Care” the premise is that they will see typical urgent care visits at the urgent care rate and ER visits at

OnPoint Urgent Care routinely provides many of the same services as an emergency department at a fraction of the cost. A recent BCBS study showed that an urgent care visit averages 10% of the cost of an emergency room for the same treatment. Ask before you go. Chances are if you are able to do the research and make the call, your condition may not warrant a trip to the ED.

The 15-Minute Scan That Assesses Your Risk for Heart Disease Heart disease is the top killer among men and women, and a low-cost 15-minute coronary calcium scan can provide quick, easy-to-understand results that can help determine yours or a loved one’s risk for having a heart attack.

This test only costs $79 and is available at The Medical Center of Aurora, Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, Sky Ridge Medical Center and Centennial Medical Plaza.

The scan is a non-invasive imaging test that, beyond typical risk factors like cholesterol and family history, many cardiologists view as one of the best available tests for measuring cardiac risk.

You know your body better than anyone else, and if you’re concerned about your risk for heart disease, taking 15 minutes to find out may end up being worth years of your life.

Quick, Painless, Effective Coronary calcium scans aren’t necessarily well known as a predictor for measuring cardiac risk. Quite simply, a coronary calcium scan measures the amount of calcification in your arteries. When cholesterol and fat build up in your arteries, you’re at an increased risk for a heart attack. Where there’s more cholesterol, there’s more calcium; and this scan helps us visualize exactly how much calcium is currently in your arteries. The scan is one of the easiest tests you can undergo. We tape electrodes to your chest, place you in an imaging machine (like an MRI machine) and have you hold your breath for a few seconds while pictures are taken. After 10-15 minutes, you’re out the door and receive your results within 48 hours.

Helping You Make the Right Changes Every patient receives a coronary calcium score and percentile based on age and sex – the higher the score, the higher the risk. After we receive the score, I’ll go through the easy-to-follow tables and pictures of the heart arteries with each patient to determine next steps. Patients with higher scores are often nervous about being at increased risk for a heart attack. While a higher score does mean increased risk, we can work together to make sure that increased risk doesn’t turn into a heart attack. Lifestyle changes like proper diet, exercise, smoking cessation and control of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugars are all a great place to start. Depending on each patient’s case, I may also recommend medications like aspirin and statins. Preventing heart disease is the same at any age, and keeping your body healthy

does wonders for your heart. This includes getting 30 minutes of exercise, not smoking, limiting alcohol and avoiding a high fat diet.

Stay Proactive About Your Heart Health The old cliché rings true – a picture is worth a thousand words. Whether a motivating factor for those with higher scores or a visual reassurance of a healthy lifestyle for those with lower scores, a coronary calcium scan is a great way for patients to see their risk for heart disease. People who haven’t had coronary artery disease (i.e. stents, bypass surgery) are prime candidates for a coronary calcium scan. Those with strong family histories of cardiac disease, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension are also great candidates, as are men over 45 and women over 55.

You are one-of-a-kind. Your cardiology care should be too.

We know how unique you are. That’s why we get to know each and every one of our patients. It also helps us deliver truly personalized care, designed for you.
