From here to Timbuk Toys by Jennifer Smith If you’re looking for a toy store that’s both quaint and high-tech, fun and smart, locally owned and globally minded, Timbuk Toys is for you. “You’re going to find things you’re not going to find anywhere else,” said manager Brandie Cardenas, who has worked there for more than eight years. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. The environment is just so much fun, and the energy is right up there. I love my job.” Her boss, Sally Kashiwa, opened the first of what is now four Timbuk Toys stores in 1993.
“Local families enjoyed the classic charm of the shop, where children were invited behind the counter to help pull the lever of the antique cash register,” reads the website. Kashiwa takes pride in those strong local ties. “Our purpose has always been to be an intrinsic part of the communities we serve,” she writes. To that end, Timbuk Toys offers discounts for teachers, seniors and regular customers, and sponsors a fundraising program for schools and organizations. When choosing what to stock,
Timbuk Toys considers “play value,” or how the toys support and enhance the play experience for kids. “We are guided by the principle that play is critical to a child’s development, and we are committed to providing toys that are tools for learning and discovery,” says the website.
