Collegiate Summer Quest

2014

Welcome to our 42nd year of offering summer programs to the community. Summer Quest is all about providing opportunities for children of all ages to have fun, learn and be challenged over the summer months. Our beautiful campuses provide the perfect setting for a wide variety of programs ranging from academics, arts and enrichment to sports and much more! With over 40 years of experience, Summer Quest knows what it takes to create summer memories that last a lifetime.

Many camps fill to their maximum enrollment. Register early to reserve your space! The Summer Quest Office is located in Luck Hall, on the Lower School Campus. Summer Quest office hours are 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday – Friday. Collegiate School will be closed on Friday, July 4. Keith Evans Head of School Collin McConaghy Director of Summer Quest Andrew Stanley Director of Summer Quest Sports Camps Libby Rosebro Associate Director of Summer Quest 103 North Mooreland Road • Richmond, Virginia 23229 (804) 741-9714 or (804) 665-1750 summerquest@collegiate-va.org www.collegiate-va.org and click on “Summer Quest”

Why Summer Quest Camps? • Collegiate Summer Quest offers over 100 different programs for pre-schoolers through adults. For the past ten years, over 50% of Summer Quest campers have been non-Collegiate students. • Our camper-to-staff ratios ensure that our participants are getting individualized attention. • The majority of our camps are run by our very own Collegiate faculty and staff. • Summer Quest offers Extended Care options most weeks so campers have the opportunity to spend the entire day at Collegiate Summer Quest. • If you live in Chesterfield, we can pick-up and drop-off your child at our Collegiate School Aquatics Center. • Along with our recently expanded and innovative Mooreland Road campus, Collegiate School’s Robins Campus has state-of-the-art athletic fields and facilities. We also have programs being offered at the new Collegiate School Aquatics Center. • Summer Quest has enrolled over 1,200 campers for the past 11 years with record enrollment as high as almost 1,600 campers!

Building Imaginations – Architecture for Little Hands and Big Minds Shannon Dowling, Juicebox Architects Rising 3rd – Rising 5th Graders June 16 – June 20 • 9:00 am – 12:00 pm $215 • Bring a healthy snack and filled water bottle from home each day. Campers will learn, through hands-on experiments, why buildings stand up, what shapes help designers work, what terms architect use, and the basic structural concepts behind building - all while exploring their own creativity and inner design potential. Campers are encouraged to be creative, think outside the box and even get a little messy. Pull out your hard hat and put on your thinking cap as we build our imaginations together! This week-long camp will have hands-on architectural experiences for rising 3rd through 5th graders. We will be looking at real-life problems and simplified versions of what architects do each day. This camp will be ideal for children who like to create, draw and build. We will build miniature skyscrapers out of toothpicks and licorice, design cardboard cities, build our own occupiable geodesic dome, and even design, build, and play on our own three-dimensional water-sprinkler obstacle course all while brushing up on those math, social studies, and science skills! Shannon Dowling has both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in architecture. She has worked on everything from schools to libraries to home additions. She studied design and practiced architecture not only in her hometown of Richmond, but also in New York and Los Angeles. Her work has been included in a number of exhibits, including the Biennale in Venice and at the Dia Center for the Arts in Manhattan. She has two young children of her own and loves building young creative minds as much as she loves architecture. For more information contact Shannon Dowling via facebook at www.facebook.com/juiceboxarchitects or visit the website at www.juiceboxarchitect.com.

Previous trips included a scavenger hunt through the woods and trails that the Collegiate cross-country teams run in the Fall, water balloon fights, the discovery of a special bookstore where music and puppets bring the Wild West alive, out-of-the way swimming holes, the best ice cream in the city, putt-putt, the zoo, blueberry picking, specialty candy stores, designer donuts, and much, much more. Academics

Upper School Rising 9th – Rising 12th Graders

Upper School courses completed by Collegiate Middle School students may be taken for advancement, but will not be credited toward graduation requirements or used in the calculation of a student’s GPA. However, these courses will be recorded on the student’s transcript. All classes meet Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted. Though the pacing will differ, course content and academic demands will remain consistent with the semester-long versions of these electives. Students will earn the same ½ credit they would have earned for taking the course in the fall or spring. These courses will also be open to non-Collegiate students seeking summer enrichment opportunities. A student who misses two or more classes in a four week-long Summer Quest academic course typically may not receive academic credit for that course.

For Credit Classes ENGLISH Classes

Dr. Bart Thornton has chaired the English Department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he teaches American literature, Russian literature, fiction and an interdisciplinary course called “Anarchy and the AvantGarde.” Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago. In addition to holding a doctorate in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Bart Thornton at bthornton@collegiate-va.org.

While a student may take more than one ½ credit English elective during the summer session, only one per year may be substituted for an academic-year semester course. Regardless of summer elective work, every Collegiate student must take at least one English course at Collegiate School during their junior and senior years.

Satire Vlastik Svab Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 9 – July 3 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 Comedian Lewis Black describes fundamentalism as “the inability to laugh at yourself.” Dave Barry defines a sense of humor as “a measurement of the extent to which we realize that we are trapped in a world almost totally devoid of reason. Laughter is how we express the anxiety we feel at this knowledge.” Satire comes in many forms: printed word, image and modern visual media. Scholars, journalists and artists have been mocking social norms and human folly since ancient Greece, and this course will continue the tradition of recognizing the hypocrisies and vices of human society. Notable satirists, including Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, Stephen Colbert, Stanley Kubrick, David Sedaris and Joseph Heller, are just a few of the masters of wit and acerbic sarcasm that are both smarter and funnier than you. Poetry Workshop Pete Follansbee Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 7 – August 1 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 In Poetry Workshop, you are the writer as you learn how to generate, refine and polish your original pieces by working in free verse, prose poetry and surrealistic poetry, as well as in form, pattern and meter. You will stretch your writing limits, but also discover your own style and voice, through both composing and critique. With your classmates, you will also go on a field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to write a poem in dialogue with a favorite work of art. You will draft, critique and revise, as you compile your work in an actual and an online portfolio. Among other culminating “events” will be a class reading and the christening of your own poetry website with recordings of your readings of your semester’s work. Throughout the course, to spur and inspire your writing, you will read poets such as Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Bishop and Billy Collins; formalists such as Richard Wilbur and Donald Justice; and surrealists such as James Tate, Russell Edson and John Ashbery. Pete Follansbee teaches English 10, Science Nature Spirit Soul, and Poetry Workshop at Collegiate School. He holds a BA in English from Hamilton College in upstate New York and an MFA in poetry from The University of Iowa Writers Workshop. His most recent publication was in The Georgetown Review, Spring 2009. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Pete Follansbee at pfollansbee@collegiate-va.org.

Disunited Kingdom Bart Thornton, PhD Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 7 – August 1 • 11:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 In the years after World War II, a newly empowered group of English writers, intellectuals, filmmakers and musicians gave voice to the nation’s sadness and rage. These artists crafted narratives with an anarchic energy, fueled by a desire to create new modes of expression. In addition to addressing a radically changed circumstance – Great Britain’s new powerlessness on the world stage – these artists exposed the effects of the long-standing imbalances between classes. In this elective, we will focus on the fiction, drama and culture of contemporary England. Our work on rebellion in English culture will be informed by our analysis of punk-rock and post-punk bands and experimental filmmakers whose explorations showcase the same oppositional energy that characterizes the work of the era’s key British writers. Dr. Bart Thornton has chaired the English Department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he teaches American literature, Russian literature, fiction, and an interdisciplinary course called “Anarchy and the AvantGarde.” Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago.

Microbiology Pascal Losambe Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 9 – July 3 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 Your body contains more bacterial cells than human cells. Therefore, it is important to gain knowledge about the invisible world of microorganisms that exists both on the inside of the body and on the outside. Bacteria are known to produce gold nanoparticles, make ice, glow in the dark, respond to magnetic fields, survive in boiling water, clean up oil spills, turn milk into yogurt, secrete vitamins essential to our health and much, much more. In this ½ credit microbiology class, students will become proficient in understanding the foundational principles of microbiology and acquire fundamental laboratory skills. A large component of the course will focus on studying microbiology in a real world context. For example, students will test the efficacy of popular household cleaners and detergents, examine the ability of food preservatives to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria and make bacteria glow in the dark. There will be field trips to industries that utilize microbiological methods such as breweries, farms, research and medical technology laboratories. Pascal Losambe holds a BA in molecular biology and biochemistry and received his master’s in biology. He is in his third year at Collegiate and teaches introductory biology courses and coaches track and field. Prior to Collegiate, Pascal was at Boston College researching neurological disorders associated with HIV. For more information, contact Pascal Losambe at pascal_losambe@collegiate-va.org.

SENIOR SEMINAR Class This course is open to rising Collegiate Seniors for one semester of Senior Seminar course credit, with one additional required semester during the regular school year. Rising seniors from other local schools may enroll as well.

NEW!

Eat, Think & Be Merry A Mindful Analysis of Food in America Rhiannon Boyd Rising 12th Graders July 7 – July 25 • 9:00 am – 2:00 pm *Schedules for field trip days will be provided upon registration. Monday – Friday $1,095 This seminar examines the intersection of ethics, governmental policy and economics through an investigation of the American food system. By starting with the contents of the food on our plates, we’ll work backwards to understand its origin and effects. What are the implications for local and global economies, workers, the environment, animals, our health and the health care system? What responsibility, if any, do consumers have to “vote with their dollars” to change it, and what should be the government’s role in our food system? Students’ study will center around inquiry, experience and action: Inquiry will come in groups, as students use Chat & Chew book-club style learning groups to discuss chosen texts, documentaries and podcasts while comparing different food systems – conventional, organic, local, slow, and raw – with their tastebuds. Experiences will optimize learning in and outside of the classroom with guest speakers on campus, opportunities for significant service hours with food-based

organizations and field trips to include places such as a nationally-reknown farm in the Shenandoah Valley to investigate alternatives in modern farming. Portfolios will show learning in action: students will collaborate on a self-designed project to implement ideas for some aspect of the American food system. Course is open to rising Collegiate Seniors for one semester of Senior Seminar course credit, with one additional required semester during the regular school year. Rising seniors from other local schools may enroll as well. Rhiannon Boyd has taught multiple courses for Senior Seminar at Collegiate for five years. She holds both an MA and BA in philosophy, with areas of specialization in moral theory, applied ethics and political philosophy. She has also taught courses in philosophy for John Tyler and Germanna Community Colleges. For more information, contact Rhiannon Boyd at rhiannon_boyd@collegiate-va.org.
