Additionally, given the requirements of Queensland Health, and in the interest of preserving the safety of all in our community, I would ask that you follow all COVID-safe measures while on campus. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. On behalf of the College community, I would like to thank all staff, coaches, parents, Old Boys and friends of our schools for their support of our Co-curricular programs, and for their contribution to the success of our sports and activities. This spirit of fellowship and positive intent will be remembered long after the scores of the match are a distant memory. I do hope that you enjoy Round 5 of fixtures and feel most welcome as our guests.

Mr Andre Casson HEADMASTER

Brisbane Boys’ College is delighted to welcome The Southport School for Round 5 of GPS fixtures. With each new season, we look forward to renewing our acquaintances with friends from the other GPS School communities. This year, we celebrate 105 years of association and friendly competition, built on mutual respect, friendly rivalry and fair play – tenets of even greater significance as we continue to be influenced by the effects of COVID-19. We want all students to enjoy sport and to understand the benefits of physical activity, and we encourage our charges to strive for excellence, while impressing on them the importance of team spirit and sportsmanship. Similarly, we encourage all parents and spectators to set an example of good sportsmanship, respect for fair play and applauding the endeavours displayed by both teams. With this in mind, I draw your attention to the GPS Codes of Behaviour found in this program.

Mr Mark Pavone HEAD OF CO-CURRICULUM

I extend a warm welcome to all competitors, spectators and staff attending Round 5 fixtures in Chess, Basketball and Rugby this Indigenous Round. I hope that you all enjoy the experience.

A sincere thank you to Mr James Lennon –Cultural Coordinator and his team for their continued work in this incredibly important area so we too can be proud of the fact that our country is home to the oldest continuous civilisations on earth, extending back over 65,000 years. We thank The Southport School and their community for their contributions and wish all players the very best for the day.

Our First V Basketball and First XV Rugby teams will be led onto the courts and fields by our Indigenous boys. Both teams will be wearing their kit designed by our boys for the occasion to also promote awareness of the history and culture of indigenous people.

Across the weekend of Co-curriculum with BBC hosting TSS we will be celebrating our annual Indigenous round. It will be an incredibly powerful and emotional display from all boys, staff and parents involved. INDIGENOUS ROUND BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE BBC VS TSS 20

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Brisbane Boys’ College acknowledges the traditional owners of the land upon which we gather today, the Jagera and Turrbal people, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for everyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country. It recognises Indigenous people as the first custodians of this land, promotes awareness of the history and culture of Indigenous people, and formally acknowledges Indigenous peoples’ ongoing connection to the land.

INDIGENOUS DAY Today marks a very special occasion at the College, as we celebrate Indigenous Day for a second year. Members of the BBC Mob are incredibly proud to be part of this day and would like to take this opportunity to thank the Commonwealth Bank of Australia for their generous support. The Mob would also like to thank the Brisbane Boys’ College Foundation, the Maria Vasas Foundation and the Cape York Leaders Program for their ongoing friendship with the College. We welcome members of the Cape York Leaders Program and Commonwealth Bank who are here today. We also welcome parents and friends of our Mob who have travelled from far and wide to be here to help us celebrate this wonderful event. Indigenous Day is an important step on the path to reconciliation, as it recognises the importance of the BBC Indigenous Program within the school and the wider College community.

The Rugby First XV and the Basketball First V teams will wear kit specially designed by the students of our BBC Indigenous Program, and one Rugby jersey and one Basketball singlet will be auctioned to raise money for the Indigenous Program. To join in the day, students can purchase a pair of Mob-designed socks for $20 for either Rugby or Basketball, and a limited edition BBC Indigenous Day cap for $30, of which only 200 were made. All proceeds will be reinvested into resources for students of the BBC Indigenous Program.

BBC INDIGENOUS PROGRAM

Brisbane Boys’ College provides educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys, which are focused on the academic, co-curricular and spiritual growth and development of each student. This occurs in a caring environment that nurtures their development through positive inclusion, authentic partnerships and respectful relationships. The BBC Indigenous Program partners with the Cape York Leaders Program to provide scholarships for Indigenous students from the Cape. In many rural Indigenous communities, schooling does not extend beyond Year 7, so children must move away from home to continue their education. Cultural programs like the BBC Indigenous Program provide opportunities to close the educational gap by giving boys access to a quality education, which maximises their potential to support their communities and make meaningful contributions to College life. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how everyone can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year, the BBC Mob produced three art pieces in a 'Walkabout' art project to spread the message of reconciliation among our BBC community. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s design incorporates the traditional colours of BBC; Green, White, and Black whilst combining traditional dot art that symbolises a coming together of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous community, and of walking the path to reconciliation. Walking the path of reconciliation is represented through the use of animal prints walking the tracks, and the ‘coming together’ is represented as the dot circles along the tracks. The Rugby jersey also holds the flags of the First Nation People on the right sleeve, with the Torres Strait Island flag adorning the left sleeve. Thanks to all for your support today, and for making this the momentous occasion that it is. We wish all sporting teams the best of luck in their matches.

BOARDERS’ DAY Today we celebrate over 150 BBC Boarders, their families and the contribution that they make to Brisbane Boys’ College. From Dubai to the Gold Coast, Hong Kong to Proserpine, we have a global community here within Rudd House. The bond of mateship is a key attribute that the Boarders have. The school spirit that the Boarders bring not only to interhouse activities, but all school events is a standout, and today is a day to say thank you to them and their parents for the tremendous efforts they bring to BBC. We also thank our dedicated staff who go above and beyond to make the Boarding House a home away from home. As part of this event, we will be running a Rudd House BBQ with a slurpee machine, and will be holding a raffle with some amazing prizes. We will also be honouring Mrs Josie Pavone, our former beloved House Mother. After 16 years, the Rudd House family had to say farewell to our beloved House Mother as Mrs Josie Pavone retired at the end of 2021. Josie had such a huge impact on so many lives during this time. From cooking her favourite Sicilian pasta dish with the Year 12 boys to making hot chocolate for a boy who was feeling homesick late at night; from sewing a button back onto a blazer to giving the “world’s greatest hugs” to boys who were upset. Over the years, Josie has been a second mum to so many Rudd boys and guided them to become young men – from watching boys arrive on that first day as Year 7s, to seeing those same boys attend their Year 12 Formal, she was always there for the boys on their life journey. When I asked what Josie misses the most and she immediately answered, ‘the boys... I loved seeing them play and grow up together’. Josie’s calming and loving nature has been one of the most important and integral influences in Rudd House, and helped to create our Rudd House family.

To our retired House mum, Josie, can we all say to you once more that we love you and miss you, but most importantly, thank you for being an amazing person who impacted so many lives during your time at BBC. Even though you have retired to begin your new journey, watching your own grandchildren grow up, please remember that this is not goodbye. The doors to Rudd House will always be open to you and we look forward to you and your husband, Sam, visiting us any time. Your 16 years here at BBC have created a beautiful legacy, and we want to celebrate this today by honouring you with a special award. Thank you, Josie.
