Anne Trumble, the founder and director of Omaha, Neb.-based nonprofit Emerging Terrain, will speak about the organization’s public art and public space-related work today, April 18, at Iowa State University. Seven Senior Students Honored in College of Design’s Annual BFA Exhibition
Seven Iowa State University students majoring in integrated studio arts took top honors in “Primed,” the 2012 BFA Juried Senior Student Exhibition, on view through Thursday, April 19, in Gallery 181, College of Design. The show features 90 artworks by 45 seniors who will receive Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in integrated studio arts (ISA) in May, August or December this year. Media represented include ceramics, drawing, digital media, fiber, metal, mixed media, painting, photography and printmaking. The exhibition also features a large mural painted directly on the gallery’s east wall to honor the graduating class. [Read more]
Interior Design Student Team Places Second in International Video Competition
A team of two Iowa State University interior design students took second place out of a field of 30 in the 2011 Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Interior Design Education Video Competition. Winners were announced during the IDEC 2012 Annual Conference in Baltimore in March. Seniors Emily Erbes and Anya Robson, both of Ames, were recognized for “Economic Impacts of a Qualified Interior Designer,” a video they created to describe the worldwide economic contributions of interior design and its practitioners. Graphic Design Grad Student Michele Rosenboom Still Excelling in Fabric Design Competition
Graphic design graduate student Michele Rosenboom (BFA 2000 Interior Design) won the Reader’s Choice Award in the second round of The Printed Bolt’s “Repeat” fabric design competition. And she only missed winning the entire Industrial Revolution challenge by one point with the judges! The third design challenge will be revealed Friday. Watch for your chance to vote on Michele’s next set of designs!
CRP Senior Amanda Jacobson is College of Design Student Marshal
Amanda Jacobson, St. Charles, will represent the Iowa State University College of Design as its student marshal at the university’s public commencement exercises May 5 in Hilton Coliseum. Her faculty escort will be Douglas M. Johnston, professor and chair of the department of community and regional planning. Jacobson will graduate magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in community and regional planning and a double major in environmental studies from Iowa State. She is completing her undergraduate degree in just three years. [Read more]

The Colleges of Design and Human Sciences will help celebrate Veishea by cosponsoring lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Thursday, April 19, on central campus. Enjoy food from Valentino’s, Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, and carrots or apples. You’ll need a Veishea 2012 button in order to eat; buttons are $5 and can be purchased with cash at any of the daily cookouts.
CoD Student-Designed Float in Veishea Parade
Twelve students—11 from industrial design and one from architecture—in Associate Professor David Ringholz’s spring-semester special topics studio designed and built a float for this Saturday’s Veishea parade to promote Reiman Gardens and the industrial design program. The float will highlight the Gardens’ “Some Assembly Required” theme for 2012 and the “Nature Connects” LEGO sculpture exhibition now on view there. The float will feature a large animatronic butterfly that will flap its wings and spin to spotlight Reiman Garden’s butterfly wing, along with models of some of the gardens’ iconic landscape elements and several figures representing garden visitors, as well as music composed by students. The entire float will be covered in living grasses and shrubs provided by local gardening and landscape design companies. Jeff Husak, junior in industrial design, is the student project manager. The Veishea parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, on Pammel Drive in front of the Molecular Biology Building, and ends on Wallace Road near the Food Sciences Building. Come out and cheer for the Reiman Gardens/Industrial Design entry!
Adam Covington Veishea Lighting Display
A lighting installation project by Adam Covington, a senior double-majoring in landscape architecture and speech communication, will be on display through Sunday, April 22, in the College of Design. Covington has worked with Associate Professor Pam Iasevoli, interior design, over the past two semesters to develop a display of more than 60 fluorescent blue lights in faculty windows on the side of the building that faces campus. The lights, which were installed April 15 and will be up during Veishea, illuminate the windows and part of the offices and create a pattern across the building’s facade that is most visible at night. Covington’s project, which was completed through an independent study, honors project and Barbara King Scholarship for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, investigates the impact of lighting on architecture and the landscape by using lighting to define, transform and give identity to the College of Design.
Michele Rosenboom Graduate Exhibition on Display through April 20
”Print & Position: brand identity for a surface design studio,” the graduate exhibition by Michele Rosenboom (BFA 2000 Interior Design), a candidate for a Master of Arts in graphic design, is on view in the display cases in the Kocimski Auditorium corridor this week (through Friday, April 20). The exhibition showcases Rosenboom’s creative component project, in which she explores the field of surface design, the development of a portfolio of patterns and a brand identity for a freelance surface design business.

The College of Design’s spring graduation convocation will take place Saturday, May 5. The event begins with a reception for graduating students and their families at 9:30 a.m. in the King Pavilion, followed by a recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Lightfoot Forum. Donate Cans of Starkist Tuna for AIAS Canstruction Project
The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) is collecting unopened cans of tuna for the annual Canstruction design competition and food drive this Saturday, April 21. This is a charitable event in which groups design and build a sculpture out of nonperishable food items that will be donated to the FoodBank of Iowa. AIAS will use the tuna cans to build a “Death Star” from the movie “Star Wars.” Please help your fellow students in “Destroying Hunger One Planet at a Time!” by bringing five-ounce cans of Starkist tuna and placing them in the box outside the Dean’s Office by Friday, April 20.
DASH Extended Lab Hours
The College of Design computer labs are open 24 hours a day from today, April 18, through Saturday, April 28, at 10 p.m. The labs will resume normal hours Sunday, April 29, and close at 5 p.m. Friday, May 4, for semester break. They will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, May 14, when summer classes begin. Free movies and popcorn will be available on the fourth floor from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday, April 23, through Thursday, April 26.
CODAC Spring Art Sale
The annual spring sale of artwork by students in the integrated studio arts program will take place during dead week in the foyer outside the Dean’s Office. Sponsored by CODAC (College of Design Art Club), the sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, April 25-27. Most of the proceeds go directly to the student artists, while the rest help fund club activities such as workshops and guest speakers. This is a great chance to get some unique artwork and find gifts for graduation, Mother’s Day, summer weddings, or just something fun for yourself!

Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architectural Scholarship Fund
The Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architectural Scholarship Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation recognizes and fosters students who have a demonstrated talent and passion for architecture. A single $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to a currently enrolled student entering his/her final year in a graduate or undergraduate NAAB-accredited architecture program in fall 2012. In addition to the financial award, the recipient will be offered a summer 2012 internship in one of ZGF’s five office locations (Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York or Washington, DC). Applications must be received by the firm no later than Tuesday, May 1. The scholarship recipient will be selected no later than June 1, with funds awarded for the 2012-2013 academic year. Core Portfolio Submission
Students in the Core Design Program who wish to apply for admission to one or more of the College of Design’s degree programs must fill out an online application form and submit portfolios and hard copies of your essay between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, May 4, or Monday, May 7; the location will be announced in core classes and on the core website. The online application must be completed before you can submit your portfolio and essay.
