Work by ISA Associate Professor Barbara Walton in Solo Show
A solo exhibition of work by Barbara Walton, an associate professor of integrated studio arts in the College of Design, also will be on display Jan. 27 through April 7 in the Community Gallery at the Octagon Center for the Arts. “Wax On, Wax Off: Encaustic Paintings by Barbara Walton” features paintings that explore the additive and subtractive properties of beeswax, microcrystalline wax and soy wax mixed with pigment. The show opens in a joint reception with the Octagon’s 44th National Clay, Fiber, Paper, Glass, Metal, Wood Exhibition (see prior announcement) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.
DID YOU KNOW? Rachel Lopez Hohenshell is New Bachelor of Design Adviser
Rachel Lopez Hohenshell joined the College of Design staff on Jan. 9 as our new interdisciplinary, graduate and articulation coordinator. She will recruit and advise Bachelor of Design majors and provide guidance and support to graduate students as well as recruiting and administrative support to all of the graduate programs in the College of Design. In addition, she will initiate and develop articulation agreements with community colleges in Iowa and neighboring states for the design, community and regional planning, landscape architecture, and possibly integrated studio arts programs. Lopez Hohenshell previously was an instructor in the ISU English department. She received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and environment with an emphasis in urban studies from Iowa State in May 2011. Habitat for Humanity Student Competition Charrette
The Design Across Boundaries student organization will host a design charrette from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, to generate ideas for the Habitat for Humanity “Sustainable Home” competition sponsored by H4H and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Lunch will be provided! Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and you can continue working on your designs throughout the semester if interested. The charrette will be in the Beckman Forum, lower level of the King Pavilion. Design Across Boundaries meets at 12 p.m. every Wednesday in the Hansen Exchange, upper level, King Pavilion.

Call for Student Applications: NCORE/ISCORE Project
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) seeks students of all backgrounds to participate in the 2012 National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE). This yearlong initiative provides participants with a better understanding of issues related to race and ethnicity in higher education through attendance at NCORE and presentation of their own research at the Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE). An applicant must be a first-, second- or third-year undergraduate student enrolled full time at Iowa State at the time of application and during the following academic year; must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA; must be available to attend NCORE May 29 June 2 in New York City; must enroll in University Studies 321x Fall 2012 (3:10 - 5 p.m. Thursdays) and must present at ISCORE in March 2013. Plan to Attend Career Days Events!
Mark your calendar! The College of Design’s annual Career Days Expo will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. A new educational component, including multidisciplinary panel discussions as well as discipline-specific sessions, will take place in the college that morning. Check ISU CMS often to see organizations attending Design’s career expo as well as those hosted by other colleges. Consider attending Engineering, Business, LAS, and Human Sciences fairs since some organizations recruit multiple majors but choose to attend only one career fair. Events to help you prepare for Career Days include portfolio critiques from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in the Lightfoot Forum, and a session on interviewing and preparing for Career Days at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, in 130 Design. Call for Entries: Margaret Sloss Women’s Center Logo Design Competition
In honor of its 30th anniversary at Iowa State University, the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center is sponsoring a design competition for a new logo. Complete the application form and email it along with your proposed logo design to womentctr@iastate.edu by 11:59 p.m. Feb. 6. The designer of the selected logo will be recognized at the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award Reception on March 20 and will receive a “The Vagina Monologues” gift basket. Peer Mentor Applications Due Feb. 10
The College of Design seeks qualified design students to serve as peer mentors for the Design Exchange and Design Collaborative learning communities. To be eligible, you must have completed the first-year Core Design Program and be enrolled in one of the College of Design’s professional degree programs. Pre-design students may apply, but hiring will be contingent upon acceptance into a degree program. Applications are due to 297 Design by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10. Glass Recycling Initiative Internship Applications Due Feb. 15
A paid internship ($10/hour, up to 300 hours) is available for a student interested in the opportunity to investigate and develop glass-recycling initiatives for the ISU community. The position will focus on collecting data on the types, volumes and locations of glass waste generated, identifying recycling or reuse options, determining peer facility baselines and developing community-based educational materials. The intern will be supervised by the director of sustainability and the environmental programs manager for ISU Environmental Health and Safety. JUST FOR GRAD STUDENTS Requirements for Summer Graduates to Participate in Spring Commencement
Graduate students planning to complete their degree requirements during the summer term who would like to participate in the spring 2012 commencement ceremony must meet the following requirements: You must be in good academic standing (not on academic probation); you must have an approved “Committee Appointment” form on file with the Graduate College, and you must have an approved POS (Program of Study) form with at least the minimum number of required credits on file with the Graduate College. The following forms are all due to the Graduate College by March 23: Summer Commencement Form, Application for Graduation for the summer term; Request for Final Oral Examination form for an oral to be held prior to the last date for an oral examination in the summer term (for students with a required final oral exam); Request for Final Graduation Check for Students in Programs Approved with No Final Oral Examination form (for students in approved coursework only programs). All the forms except the Request for Final Oral Examination are available online.
