MODESTO JUNIOR COLLEGE LAUDED

FOR ATHLETICS PROGRAM AND SUPPORTING HEALTH, RECREATION AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS

A

s Dean of the Division of Health, Recreation and Physical Education/Athletic Director for the past 14 years, it is important to note that Modesto Junior College has excellent programs in each of these areas. Physical Education, also known as Kinesiology, is the scientific study of human movement. Our Physical Education program at Modesto Junior College offers a balanced approach based upon the individual interests and needs of our students. In addition to a wide variety of Physical Education activity and theory courses, we also offer intercollegiate competition in 21 sports. Since the majority of career opportunities in Physical Education exist for our students completing a bachelor’s degree, general education and transfer courses are carefully planned so that students are well prepared for individual career needs and upper division college work. Modesto Junior College offers an AA degree in Physical Education (123 students currently enrolled), a new AAT degree in Kinesiology (64 students), an AA degree in University Prep: Health and Physical Education (139 students), and an AA degree in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine (358 students).

The Athletic Training/Sports Medicine program at Modesto Junior College is designed to prepare students for appropriate procedures in prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. This degree is also designed to transfer students to four-year colleges where they can continue their education to fulfill the requirements of National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) certification. This will lead to the student’s eventual eligibility to challenge the national examination, and upon satisfactory completion of the required courses and passing the exam, become a certified athletic trainer.

Modesto Junior College’s Health Education program draws from the biological, environmental, psychological, social, physical and medical sciences to develop individual, group, institutional and community strategies to improve health knowledge and attitudes, as well as skills and behavior.

Modesto Junior College’s Adapted Physical Education program offers courses introducing students to a variety of sports, aquatic exercises, and swimming, strength development and fitness.

With increased urbanization, expanded leisure time, and public

awareness of the value of recreational activities, trained leaders are needed to organize and administer programs in a variety of settings. Since most jobs in recreation require a four-year college degree, students in the recreation program at Modesto Junior College are encouraged to follow the fouryear college transfer pattern, and also to complete theoretical and practical recreation classes. Considerable flexibility in the recreation program is allowed in designing an individualized program, to strengthen career needs and specialization areas selected by the student.

Modesto Junior College’s Intercollegiate Athletics program is a member of the Big 8 Conference for both men and women, except for men’s wrestling (Coast Conference) and football (Valley Conference). The men compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, water polo, and wrestling. The women compete in basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and field, tennis, volleyball, water polo and golf. Since 1937, Modesto Junior College has hosted an annual statewide basketball tournament in December. It is the oldest community college invitational basketball tournament in the state.

In the 2012-13 academic year, the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), in association with the National Alliance of TwoYear Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) announced that Modesto Junior College placed 11th out of 105 California Community Colleges in the final standings of the NATYCAA Cup. The NATYCAA Awards were designed to recognize and reward overall athletic/program excellence at the two-year college level. The CCCAA is the governing body providing oversight of intercollegiate athletics within the California Community College system.

J

oseph Sheley spent much of his first year as interim president of California State University, Stanislaus, touring the Central Valley and meeting with business and community leaders and elected officials.

In May 2013, the CSU Board of Trustees rewarded Sheley’s hard work with a permanent appointment as president of CSU Stanislaus, and he was formally invested as the university’s 10th president during a ceremony in November.

Now in his first full academic year as president, Sheley continues to lay the groundwork for a new era of community partnership that will help uplift the entire region.

“I’ve driven to cities and towns all over the region … to meet people and to listen to them, to see where our students live and work, and to send the message that we will come to them,” Sheley said. “We are not an island. We are part of an important region, and we truly want to partner in moving this region forward.”

Sheley believes the university and the community should become stronger advocates for each other.

CSU Stanislaus alumni, faculty,

staff and students should not be shy, he said, when it comes to boasting about the university’s accomplishments and contributions to the region, among them: • CSU Stanislaus has been featured in the Princeton Review’s “Best Colleges” ranking for eight consecutive years and in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges ranking 18 times.

• The university has been recognized by the Princeton Review as one of the most environmentally

The university has also been recognized nationally for its affordability and value, along with its friendliness toward military service members, veterans and their families.

• For seven consecutive years, CSU Stanislaus has been recognized nationally on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, honoring the university’s commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement.

• The university’s athletics programs have also become a great source of pride for the community, in part because of the spirit instilled in student-athletes. The athletics department has worked with the student body to

education of graduates who will make their mark on the region regardless of their choice of major.

That vision, he said, will only be achievable through the commitment of the university and region to common goals.

“A vision is only as good as the community’s willingness to pursue it — not just the campus, but the whole region,” Sheley said. “I have never been so confident about anything in my life: This vision of our one university, one community will be our legacy — if you will join me in its pursuit.”

With graduation just around the corner and post-grad plans already being made, the Senioritis epidemic is upon us with full force. After a long four years (or more) the temptation to ease up on the gas can sometimes be too difficult to ignore. So whether you’re on the brink of graduation, or just ready for the summer, here are some tips for staving off Senioritis.

Finding time to work out can be a challenge, but making fitness a priority is worth the sacrifice. The therapeutic benefits of a good run or hard gym session are immeasurable and can help release some of the anxiety and stress that come with a busy schedule and hard classes.

According to the Mayo Clinic, regular physical activity will not only help you sleep better, but will actually give you more energy throughout the day.

That energy could help you be more alert during class or power you through a study or homework session.

In fact, research from Purdue University found that “Students who worked out at Purdue’s gym at least once a week were more likely to earn a higher grade point average than students who visited less or not at all.” So be sure to get that cardio in, it just might help you ace that exam.

While classes and exams can be time consuming, getting a job or internship while in school has a number of benefits.

An internship in your field of study is a great way to apply classroom concepts in a real work environment and the experience will help prepare you for the work force after graduation. If an internship isn’t an option, look for job openings at your school’s website. On campus positions generally have flexible hours so you will be able to work around your class. While an on campus job might not directly relate to your field of study, it will not only provide a source of extra income, but also will help you gain practical work skills and prepare you to handle work related responsibilities.

Work

Get involved in clubs and organizations within your major. Being around like-minded people who have some of the same goals you have will help you stay the senior year course. Adding consistency and routine to your schedule by going to weekly meetings will also help you stay focused on academics and not on distractions. AddiProfessional tionally, professional clubs can also help build your resume by creating opportunities for you to network with other students as well as professionals in your field. These opportunities and connections could become invaluable to you after graduation, so be sure to take advantage of them.

Fighting Senioritis is hard. Students put in a lot of work and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, burned out, or just lazy. It is important to remember that as seniors you have worked your entire college career to get to graduation, and graduation is almost here — almost. Starting a business is a goal many students have, but you don’t have to wait years after graduation to put your plan into action. Successful corporations such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft were all started by college students and recent graduates. Here are some new and exciting start-ups with ties to a campus near you.

Tin-Bin: Tin-Bin is a promising new software startup from UC Merced. The venture originated as the side project of UCM graduate Tyler Shaddix whose “Simple API for Google Analytics” called OOcharts has generated an enormous user base, including companies such as JP Morgan Chase and Forever 21 .

The popularity of OOcharts, an application designed to let users organize their Google analytics, led Shaddix and his partners Jorge Marquez and Jared Calinisan to found Tin-Bin, a company based around the OOcharts product.

OOcharts is just the first step though, according to Product Manager Jorge Marquez. Tin-Bin plans on publishing a portfolio of applications in the near future including a legal billing application that is already under construction. To that end, their personnel count has expanded from three to six, and as Marquez, Shaddix and the rest of the team realized, they needed additional man power to continue the business’ growth as they look to expand operations throughout Northern California and the Central Valley.

Tin-Bin’s success is due in part to their “new age” business approach where the team works when they can from wherever they are. It’s an unorthodox model, but for a business that started in a living room, that flexibility has produced an impressive result. ////SEE PAGE20

Bounce: Andrew Thompson founded Bounce to solve a problem. A senior at the time attending UC Merced, Thompson realized how hard it was for students to get around the city, especially if they didn’t have a car. This led to the creation of Bounce, a ridesharing service that allowed students to connect with other student drivers. Users in need of local transportation bought tokens from the Bounce website and could redeem those credits in exchange for a ride to a given destination.

Where Tin-Bin’s business strategy was laid-back and relaxed, Bounce took a more traditional approach. Thompson and his team created an 11-page business plan, and sought mentorship from UCM Professors S.A. Davis and Mark Harris.

Despite all the planning and preparation done to ensure a smooth launch, new ridesharing laws have forced Bounce to change its business model. The service will now transition to a free forum based website where students can post ride wanted ads. Users will conduct their own transactions and Bounce will no longer charge a fee or provide drivers directly thereby reliving them of liabilities and other legal hurdles that made their old structure no longer viable. Bounce’s refreshed service will be operational in the coming months, but the company’s commitment to student service already makes it a success.

People don’t usually associate finances with fun, but CSU Stanislaus graduate Jason Gordo wants to change that. Gordo and business partner Jeff Burrow and the founders of FlexScore, a social software platform designed a program to make managing your money as painless as possible.

“We wanted to make it for the average normal person across the country,” said Gordo while describing FlexScore at the Finovate finance technology conference. After creating a FlexScore account, users fill out basic financial information, and FlexScore generates a score between 1- 1,000, the higher your score the better. Your score is meant to serve as a starting point and allows people to not only understand their financial situation, but what steps they can take to improve it.

People can also see how their score ranks compared to others of similar age and location as well as income bracket.

The system lets users “compete” for the highest score and social tools such as peer ranking and a point system based on individual milestones or “action steps.” This keeps everyone motivated to achieve financial success. KELLY NASRAWI

COACHING STUDENTS TO MAKE SUCCESSFUL CHOICES ON AND OFF THE FIELD Kelly Nasrawi, Modesto Junior College head women’s softball coach has been playing or coaching softball for the last 27 years. That would stun many people because Nasrawi looks so young herself. But she found out very early on in life what her love was. “I started playing when I was seven. I have an older sister and I wanted to be like her. She played softball,” Nasrawi says. She laughs at the recollection because her sister only played one season.

Nasrawi was born and raised in Modesto and graduated from Thomas Downey High School. Because of her high grade point average and her skills on the softball field, Nasrawi earned an academic and softball scholarship to California State University, Long Beach. She remembers wanting to play softball after she graduated high school. Her father told her that she had to have good grades or no one would give her a scholarship. That stuck and she played and worked hard to get to CSU Long Beach.

“When I was a kid I played every weekend of my life. The majority of my youth was spent playing on the weekend.” Playing on the weekends, of course, doesn’t account for her many hours a day spent practicing. “I was privileged to have parents who allowed and helped me to do what I did,” she says.

Currently, Nasrawi teaches conditioning/weight training and health lecture classes at MJC. She was hired as the head softball coach and part-time lecturer at MJC in 2007.

Since 2008, she has also been the 9th grade health teacher at Peter Johansen High School part of the Modesto City Schools; her 12th year teaching high school. Her days in the spring are hectic. During the day she is at Johansen high school, then has MJC softball practice Monday through Friday after her high school teaching hours. After practice, a few times a week, she teaches her college level courses at MJC. On the weekends, she has MJC softball games.

“I do have crazy days sometimes,” Nasrawi says. But all of her work it seems is done with the love for teaching, her students, and softball. She is the kind of coach who wants to be there for her students, like her parents were there for her. She helps students who want to further their softball careers and finds them scholarships to play at four-year universities. In the fall, she even went with a student athlete to Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She wanted to help her student athlete get a second opinion on the university. “I felt she needed help or a second opinion to make such a huge decision,” Nasrawi says.

Her words reflect her understanding of what creates success in young people. She understands the work ethic to succeed and the need for mentors. She’s gone through that path and lives it everyday. Anyone who has her as a teacher and mentor should consider themselves lucky.

Nasrawi herself feels grateful and loves what she does. During her down time when she has it, she enjoys physical activity that contributes to her well-being. It’s no surprise she picks weight lifting or running as activities to do on her free time. She’s been a life long athlete and does what any conditioned athlete does. She keeps going, consistent in her work and drive. #collegelife

Mariam Salameh, California State University, Stanislaus’ Associated Students Inc. president and CEO is one busy young woman. Born and raised in Modesto, Fall 2013 marked her first semester taking on the leadership position. Along with her 30 hours a week minimum on the job, she’s also a peer advisor for the CSU Stanislaus College of Business. She’s also a full-time public administration graduate student.

“It’s a lot,” Salameh says. “But I love what I do, but it’s hard, I’m not going to lie,” she adds. Honest and hardworking, her outlook on living life fully is refreshing.

“There’s not enough time in your life — you have to live in the moment and can’t waste it,” she says when asked about her attitude toward her full schedule.

Salameh attended Grace M. Davis High School in Modesto, graduating in 2009. She was an undergraduate at CSU Stanislaus and loved her experience there so much, she enrolled into the three-year public administration graduate program.

“A lot of people say I’m mature for my age,” the 22-year-old Salameh says. “I’m the oldest of four children. My parents worked so hard to put a roof over my head, which made me so driven and goal oriented.”

Salameh is the first to graduate college in her family. Her parents, her sources of inspiration, and immigrants from Palestine, instilled strong values about education early on for her and her siblings. They stressed throughout Salameh’s childhood that getting an education was always worth the hard work. Salameh, whose optimism is infectious, offers sage advice to those students going through difficult times in their educational career.

“I just want to advise students to never give up. If you think you can’t do it, it will get better,” she says. Life, though sometimes challenging, always gets better with a focus and goals Salameh passionately believes.

Salameh has been part of the CSU Stanislaus leadership for longer than her semester as president. Her first years as an undergraduate, she was a volunteer member of the Warrior Squad, organizing large student spirit events. During her third year, she was elected as ASI board of director of diversity. Her fourth year, she was elected ASI vice president. After reflecting on her years of service at CSU Stanislaus, Salameh decided to run for president and endured a threeweek election campaign.

The CSU Stanislaus community appreciates her years of service and most recently gave her touching, positive feedback after a speech she made at President Sheley’s inauguration. Salameh’s full schedule hardly allows time for her to think about how well she’s doing in everything she does. The positive comments she received helped her slow down and digest that she was making a difference in her community.

As for Salameh’s plans for down time outside of CSU Stanislaus, she’s learning to carve some space for herself. “My family is proud and encouraging of me, but I always get reminded to have a mental break,” Salameh says. She doesn’t say she is taking a break anytime soon, but laughs that she’s trying to. #collegelife

As a student in college, I personally know that many of us are constantly pressed for time. With this time crunch, we find ourselves struggling to eat something other than the all too stereotypical Kraft Mac and Cheese and Nissin Top Ramen. While these options may curb our appetite, they are far from anything ‘healthy’ and ‘homemade.’

During my freshman year of college, I quickly discovered that the cafeteria food served on campus would not suffice my almost hourly food cravings. The French fries, the pizza, the pasta, and the cookies just wouldn’t cut it for me! Many times for dinner, you would find me sitting and talking with friends while munching on several bowls of the magically delicious Lucky Charms. Even at 19-years-old, the marshmallows will forever be my favorite part of that cereal. Nevertheless, I knew that I wouldn’t last very long on sugar and carbohydrates. With a suggestion from family members, I made a quick trip to buy my very first Rival Crock-Pot. Although we were not allowed to have these in the dorms, I was not going to allow myself to starve in college while many were gaining their ‘Freshmen 15.’

After searching for meals online and asking my own mother for ideas, I started to master several meals which became personal favorites of friends living in my hall. If you are just learning how to cook or just want simple easy meals, then I’ve got some great recipes for you. I live by the phrase, “Minimal effort with maximum taste.”

Like I said earlier, these recipes truly require minimal effort. You will be quite surprised with the outcome! These meals can all be prepared in the CrockPot (also known as a slow cooker) before you leave for work or school. They will be ready to go by dinnertime!

I hope you find that these meals are as easy and delicious as I say they are. Trust me. It would be pretty difficult to mess these up. If you were trying to feed a group of friends, these meals would be perfect for just that.

AN OPTION FOR CAMPUS LIFE Students getting ready to begin their college careers may soon find themselves pondering how to ingrain themselves in their new communities. College presents opportunities to explore new interests and hobbies and make new friends in the process.

One of the more popular ways students assimilate into campus life is by joining a Greek organization.

Some students have gotten their first perceptions of Greek organizations from movies such as “Animal House” and “Old School,” but such depictions of Greek life are not entirely accurate. Greek organizations like fraternities and sororities date back hundreds of years, when the organizations were largely social associations formed in European universities.

When colleges were founded in North America, many of the traces of student organizations and independence were not incorporated into modern-day learning. Students eventually set off to form their own groups to debate and discuss current events and literature that was not part of their college curriculum.

Some met in secrecy, while some schools supported the free thinking of these clubs.

One of the first American schools to establish a college society was the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where the Phi Beta Kappa Society was founded, setting the precedent

for naming North American college societies after Greek-letter initials.

Other societies soon began to form under the basis of literary debates and other educational merits, like the Chi Delta Theta group at Yale.

It was not until the Kappa Alpha society, the first general Greek letter fraternity, was formed at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., that the focus of fraternities turned from being merely academic to more socially-oriented.

Many fraternities for men, and later sororities for women, began as localized Greek societies unique to particular schools. However, Sigma Phi, another fraternity formed at Union College, became the first Greek organization to es-

tablish a chapter at another college, making it the first national Greek organization. Today many Greek organizations have national reach.

Modern-day Greek societies have moved beyond strictly academic pursuits. Many are now used as social, honorary and professional groups that promote a variety of ideals. Greek life encompasses many traditions. Some organizations keep their constitutions secret, while others advertise their goals and traditions in an effort to gain new membership. Original Greek societies based initiation rites on ceremonies borrowed from historical accounts, philosophy and

literature. As time went on, many of these classic rites were abandoned and fraternities created their own ceremonies. Some believe this is when “hazing” was established.

There are different ways in which new members are inducted into Greek organizations. Some are given formal invitations initiated by current members. Many others are recruited through campus events and “Greek weeks.” In the past, such weeks were known as “rush,” and some schools still refer to them as such. The word “rush” comes from the period when Greek societies rushed to get to incoming freshmen first, luring them away from other organizations. Some organizations need to keep chapter houses full, while commuter schools may not have such large Greek presences on campus. Either way, fresh recruitment is needed each and every year in order to keep organizations alive.

According to information published by StateUniversity.com, a school and university directory, more than 10 percent of all college students are members of a Greek-letter society. In the early 21st century, there were more than 5,500 chapters on 800 campuses throughout the United States and Canada.

Generally, Greek organizations can be good places to meet new people and partake in various activities, including sports, parties, community service projects, and academic concentrations. However, fraternities and sororities have long been marred by poor public image due in part to hazing and parties that got out of control. Many schools have attempted to reform Greek organizations to improve Greek life and shift the focus from partying and destructive behaviors to more noble pursuits.

Physical, Recreations and Health Education/Director of Athletics, Dr. William Kaiser and California State University, Stanislaus Director of Athletics, Michael Matoso both answered “by winning.” Winning is a no brainer, but there’s more to it than a talented team of student athletes. It’s a balancing act for schools to not just have successful athletic teams, but to also create the best learning environment for students; those enrolled in courses within each school’s athletic department as well as their student athletes.

Kaiser, MJC’s Dean/Athletic Director since July 2000 believes the history behind their 21 athletic teams is one of the reasons they have been so successful at nurturing school spirit and their student athletes. “There are many alums in our surrounding community who continually show great pride and support for our college as a whole, as well as our highly competitive athletics program,” Kaiser says. “There’s so much history at Modesto Junior College, and the interesting sport stories come mostly from MJC coaches, past and present, who understand its winning tradition.” Kaiser’s current coaches and staff are like family to him. He talks of Sam Young, MJC’s head football coach and Steve Aristotelous, head women’s soccer coach, who just recently became the coaches with the most wins ever in the history of MJC, during Kaiser’s tenure. He also talks of Paul Aiello, head baseball coach, who has the most wins ever in MJC history, and begins his 28th season this spring. Kaiser also marvels at the college’s annual basketball tournament¬–one of the longest running men’s basketball tournaments in the country. It started around the same time the NCAA began its basketball tournament in 1938. Legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson played in the first MJC tournament.

Student athletes are also asked to not only perform well on the team, but academically as well. “The coaches and I emphasize academics at every possible opportunity that presents itself,” he says. Priority registration for student athletes is something Kaiser has championed, trying to make academic life and working outside of practice and class times easier for them. “Our student athletes sacrifice so much for the privilege of competing, so that their priority registration allows them to get classes early in the registration process, maybe work at a part-time job and perform well in the classroom,” he adds.

“Typically, our student athletes out perform the general student population in terms of grade point averages, and transfer at roughly twice the overall rate of students declaring an intent to transfer. As a result, MJC’s athletics program is arguably one of the college’s most thriving student success initiatives,” Kaiser says.

FROM PAGE 38//// much so, his children attended MJC. “Two of my daughters graduated from here, and one of my daughters transferred before graduation in order to attend CSU Stanislaus.” He says. “I always told them that if you do well at MJC, you’ll do well wherever you transfer.” They loved their time here at Modesto Junior College,” he adds.

Matoso, CSU Stanislaus’ Director of Athletics since May 2012 is leading up a much younger program than MJC. He believes winning helps school spirit, but the school must also create its own niche.

“This is a good opportunity to make a fun event. We want to connect with community. We want to create events, not just games. We want to create a fun family event,” Matoso says. This adds to school spirit, where games are accessible to students and families on a strict budget.

“You can go to a game and a family can eat for under $30-$40,” he adds.

This academic year, CSU Stanislaus hosted the women’s NCAA playoff in soccer. The event drew a crowd of 800-900 people. CSU Stanislaus, while young, is hoping to rebrand its athletics program and differentiate itself from high school athletics programs.

“This is very athletic and entertaining,” Matoso says about the difference between high school and college sports. Most times, Matoso says people are usually surprised at the athleticism if they have never seen a college sports game before.

CSU Stanislaus has giveaways at almost every game. Bottles, scarves, and hats sporting the CSU Stanislaus Warriors logo are given away for free. Team posters are also available, like for women’s basketball. Parking is plentiful and the food is tasty and within budget. All the ingredients are there to create large events that are fun for the community and students. However, families are so busy today, with parents

juggling their children in multiple sports, it’s difficult to compete with full schedules. But Matoso is not derailed. In the future of CSU Stanislaus he sees a pep band and more community involved. “We’re the only NCAA school in this county, not just in Turlock, but the area,” he says.

This is an accomplishment and something he hopes the community will in turn support fully.

Ultimately, it’s not just winning that nurtures school spirit. It’s the chemistry and balancing act of pride in educational services, positive school culture, and supportive institutions and the engagement of a community. Having a community coming to events, rooting for student athletes to succeed in their sports and in the classroom is part of the formula to nurture school spirit and a campus’ learning culture. Escort Service: Campus Safety officers are available to escort students to their cars. Request an escort by calling Campus Safety at (209) 575-6351 or by using one of the parking lot call boxes.

Emergency call boxes are small, white and orange boxes located in most parking lots. They can be used to call for a security escort or for a battery jump, door unlock or any type of emergency service as well as reporting day pass machine malfunctions.
