Chad Ross founded Chuck Waters – a lifestyle clothing company that sells simple, casual apparel and contributes a portion of its profits to a different charity each month. That would be Ginger Vallen. Kris Stevenson is a senior project manager for the Hasbro toy company. Sarah Koch founded an international nonprofit that addresses the nutrition requirements of people with HIV.

Explorers Research will be one of the most exciting, impactful things you'll be able to do at the College of Charleston. • Luke Shirley’s project took him to the Himalayas, where the results of climate change can be studied in remote mountain communities such as the Ladakh region of India. • Back home, Shannon Haas is examining the depiction of women in the video gaming culture. • Elyana Crowder is working on a 3-D medical imaging device that is intended for minimally invasive screening and therapeutic monitoring of cervical cancers. • Rachel Dors is part of a hospitality and tourism management project. The object is to study the use of websites by tourists who are looking for various restaurant options.

Service Minded We know you care. Care about human rights, our impact on the planet, world hunger and world peace. Join us in our mission to do good. Charleston Miracle has raised over $500,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital. Students who take part in the Alternative Break program spend college breaks traveling to domestic and international destinations to participate in community service. Service is integrated into the coursework in a range of disciplines. Volunteer Corps members plan and participate in service projects throughout the Charleston community. Fraternities and sororities emphasize service, along with scholarship, leadership and friendship. That’s the Greek way.

Thomas Laffay was a volunteer interpreter at the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic and participated in the Model Organization of American States. He also spent a semester in Cuba. Now he is an award-winning photojournalist and filmmaker whose work has been featured in National Geographic, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera and Science Magazine.

Hungry Cougar
Charleston is foodie heaven. That’s true whether you pick one of the many places on campus, or decide to explore some of the restaurants nearby. Clearly you don’t have to leave campus to satisfy your appetite! At Liberty Fresh Food Company, every meal is all-you-careto-eat. Better still, your choices include: rotating menus from around the globe, pizza and pasta, a large salad bar and made-to-order deli specials. Marty’s Place is located in the Jewish Studies Center. You can get made-to-order vegan and vegetarian dishes there, and the kitchen follows kosher dietary laws. Also, everything in Marty’s Place is compostable. There’s something for everyone at the Stern Center Food Court. A Mediterranean menu (everything is made from scratch, on site, with fresh ingredients), sushi, Tex-Mex and a Boar’s Head Deli. City Bistro is an all-you-care-to-eat dining hall. The upscale, rotating menu includes seafood, gourmet burgers and brickoven baked pizzas. Everything in City Bistro is compostable.

Julisa Tindall never even tried the high jump until 10th grade. Now she is setting records at the College and qualifying for the USA Track and Field Senior Outdoor Championships where she placed 13th nationally. Maybe you recognize William Rainey from Vine, where his trick-shot golf videos have more than five million views. He can hit a perfect drive off a pumpkin or a dead fish. And was the first Cougar to qualify for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship as an individual. Evan Bailey continued to play basketball after he suffered a compound fracture in his femur. That experience also led him to his career of choice – orthopedic surgeon. He is a Presidential Scholar and Academic Merit Scholar, has received a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant, conducts research in organic chemistry and volunteers in a medical shadowing program at a local hospital. He was also the Cougars’ fourth-leading scorer this year. “You have to have the mindset to realize that no one can get you, otherwise you will be afraid to run.” It’s that philosophy that has been instrumental in the record-setting 74 steals that Taylor DuPree has accumulated so far in her collegiate softball career.
