Focusing on change The UAB Collat School of Business, UAB Center for Healthcare Management and Leadership and the UAB School of Medicine are pleased to cosponsor a three-day exploration of innovation in healthcare organizations. This conference will be facilitated by Rubin Pillay, MD, Ph.D, MBA, a medical futurist and Professor of Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the UAB Collat School of Business and the Assistant Dean for Global Health Innovation at the UAB School of Medicine. He was previously the Daniel White Jordan Chair and the founding Executive Director of the Center for Health Systems Innovation in the Spears School of Business and Center for Health Sciences at Oklahoma State University. He is a family physician and clinical pharmacologist who holds a PhD in Business Administration, an MBA and an MSc in Health Management. He has extensive international teaching and consulting experience and has published widely in the field of strategic health leadership. His current work focuses on the role of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in the transformation of health and healthcare. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health.

Joel Dobbs, Pharm.D

Speakers

Dr. Joel H. Dobbs is Executive in Residence at UAB's Collat School of Business where he also directs the school’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, teaches, and works with entrepreneurs within the UAB environment and the greater Birmingham business community to help them develop and grow their businesses. In addition, he serves as Director of Commercialization Initiatives for UAB’s Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is also CEO and President of The Compass Talent Management Group LLC.

Grant Savage, Ph.D

Dr. Grant T. Savage is a Professor of Management in the UAB Collat School of Business, with secondary appointments in the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health. He co-directs the Healthcare Leadership Academy, and is a senior fellow for the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy and a senior scientist for the Comprehensive Center for Healthy Aging. Dr. Savage earned his PhD and MA degrees from the Ohio State University, and his BS, with honors, from the University of Connecticut.

J.M. Trimm, Ph.D

Dr. J.M. “Mickey” Trimm is Associate Professor of Healthcare Management and Director of the UAB Center for Healthcare Management and Leadership. He also serves as President of TwoMark Healthcare Associates. Dr. Trimm consults and teaches in the areas of healthcare strategy, healthcare information technology and operations management. He also oversees the undergraduate internship program for the School of Health Professions.

Lloyd Cooper Lloyd Cooper is the Principal of PUSH Product Design and Director of Design for Movi Medical. He has a special interest in leveraging mechanical and industrial design backgrounds to create unique innovations that balance robust mechanical/electrical design with optimized human factors and refined aesthetics.

Nigel Brown Nigel Brown is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methods with more than 15 years of process improvement experience. He has led, coached and facilitated a large number of LSS projects through two of the largest healthcare systems in Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland. Brown is currently active as the Executive Director of Performance Excellence for the University of Alabama at Birmingham and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt.

James Cimino, MD Dr. James Cimino is a board-certified, practicing internist with subspecialty certification in Clinical Informatics. He completed an internal medicine residency at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in New York City and a National Library of Medicine informatics fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. He taught at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Presbyterian Hospital in New York for 20 years. In 2008, he became Chief of the Laboratory for Informatics Development at the National Institutes of Health and a Tenured Investigator at the NIH Clinical Center and the National Library of Medicine. He left the NIH in 2015 and is now Director of UAB's Informatics Institute.

Mark Frisse, MD, MBA Dr. Mark Frisse is the Accenture Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He is a board certified internist trained in hematology-oncology. His work focuses on the intersection between healthcare informatics, economics, policy, and healthcare transformation. He has deep experience in health information technology and standards, accountable care systems, health information exchange, data governance, comprehensive electronic health record systems, e-prescribing, privacy policies and care coordination.

Fred Sanfilippo, MD, PhD Dr. Fred Sanfilippo is Professor in the Emory Schools of Medicine and Public Health, and the Director of the Emory-Georgia Tech Healthcare Innovation Program, which has been developed in coordination with the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Science Institute to enhance innovation in healthcare delivery research, education, and service. He previously served as CEO of the Emory University Woodruff Health Science Center; Board Chair of Emory Healthcare; CEO/Executive Dean of the Ohio State University Medical Center, and president of seven academic and professional organizations.

Parking Information

The School of Health Professions Building is location behind the UAB School of Nursing off University Boulevard at 18th Street. Please park in Deck D9A. That deck is accessed by turning south on 16th Street with its entrance a half-block from University on the left following the turn. Parking is free in this deck with a validated parking ticket.

All sessions will be held in the SHP Executive Learning Center, Room 640 of the School of Health Professions Building.
