The Coexist Fashion Show “The Haunted Dress”

F

ollowing last years sell-out event, The Coexist Fashion Show returns with three nights of exclusively Bristol based designers showcased in the heart of Stokes Croft. With a dark, theatrical theme, this year’s show “The Haunted Dress”, draws the audience into a wilderness of fashion forward styling, and collections created to seduce the viewer into madness.

Born from the collaborative spirit of Coexist, and based in the bustling hub of Hamilton House, each night gives Bristol residents the chance to peruse the current stock from designers, both established & new, with the added option to preorder or purchase on site via the newly introduced Buyer’s Lounge.

November MUSIC @THE Sat 1 Sun 2

CANTEEN

Roberto Savaggio - Hailing simultaneously from the dance music scenes of Berlin and

Bristol the electro-acoustic duo Roberto Savaggio invented ‘technostring’ music by floating classical sounding violin over hard house beats. It’s an exotic mix that proves a surprisingly comfortable fit and makes for elegant and highly danceable results.

Heg & The Wolf Chorus - Since emerging in 2010 singer/songwriter Heg Doughty and her ‘entourage

of voices, strings and percussion’ have developed a sophisticated blend of old and new folk tales and tunes woven into dramatic soundscapes.

Mon Canteen Hip Hop Session - Guest MCs and musicians join the rhythm section of the ultra-funky DeCyphers collective for a monthly exploration of all things hip (and, indeed, hop). 3 Tue 4

Twelve Months of Summer - Monthly showcase of the best acts from the acoustic scene pulled together by the sparkling Miss Rosina Buck (who is one such herself).

Jyotsna Srikanth’s Bangalore Dreams - This brilliant fusion project brings

Wed together the pulsing insistence of Western dance music with the dazzling instrumental skill of Carnatic violinist Jyotsna Srikanth and the restlessness of her Indo-jazz invention. Framed 5 by percussion and keyboards the soaring virtuosity of her violin makes Jyotsna Srikanth a performer to remember.

Thur Buffo’s Wake - Further proof that Brighton and Bristol share the same musical heartbeat, Buffo’s Wake have that instantly pleasing combination of quirky acoustic music and wryly comical lyrics that we 6 love. Fri 7

Rabbit Foot Spasm Band - DJ Derek apparently rates this Oxford-based outfit playing ‘Old Weird English Blues’ with ‘the fiery spirit of a Margate Mardi Gras’. Think skiffle, jive and a helluva good time and you won’t be wrong.

Sat 8

Wormfood presents: Ma’grass - There’s just so much funk in the world - Afrobeat, Funkadelica, jazz-funk, Latin MPB and classic JBs - and this energetic 9-piece from London seem to be on a mission to mash the whole lot up and serve it in one big joyful dance party groove. It’s a big big sound that your feet won’t let you ignore.

Sun 9

Bartoune - Spinning off from the irrepressible Zen Hussies this lot build a uniquely jaunty swing sound, blending originality with a fine sense of musical heritage the results are great entertainment.

Mon Canteen Jazz Session - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and 10 others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes. Tue 11

Glow Globes - Cabaret-inflected duo Glow Globes lace their sharply-written songs with delicious harmony vocals in a mix of swing, country and other stylish genres. The classy results all add up to a charming retro-sounding campfire soundtrack.

Cardboard Fox - Anyone with an ear for bluegrass won’t need introducing to the prodigious

Wed Carrivick Sisters who’ve been blowing audiences away since their early teens. Cardboard Fox 12 sees Laura and Charlotte team up with John Breese (bass) and mandolinist Joe Tozer to brew up sophisticated Americana as good as you’d find on any Nashville back porch.

Thur Here Come The Nightjars - if you put Ska through the Skiffle wringer do you get Skaffle? This 13 bunch pose the question and then answer it with rootsy abandon. Fri 14 Sat 15

Orchestre du Montplaisant - Described as ‘mainly instrumental but with bits of choir

and screams’ this East London collective specialise in trawling the danceable possibilities of African grooves like soukous and Ethiopian funk as well as the lively Latin sounds of cumbia.

Conjunto Gringo - Taking proper Cuban dance music from the likes of Tito Puente and the Afro-Cuban All Stars as their inspiration, this eight-headed octomonster band mix covers and originals in a splendidly jazzy evocation of Havana nightlife at its most musical.
