Virgin to fly daily from Brisbane to LA

Melbourne’s loss is Brisbane’s gain. Virgin Australia, currently running four services a week from Brisbane to Los Angeles will begin daily services on October 26, the same day their Melbourne-LA services cease. Virgin’s Chief Commercial Officer, Judith Crompton said “We work closely with our alliance partner Delta Air Lines to review our transPacific services to ensure we meet the needs of customers and commercial objectives. She said the changes are a result of extensive market analysis.

“Passengers from Melbourne will still be able to travel to Los Angeles on one ticket with checked-through baggage, connecting through Sydney or Brisbane. North America is Queensland’s third largest tourism market with Brisbane arrivals growing 4.2% in the last year. Customers already booked on a direct Melbourne-Los Angeles flight after October 26 will be offered alternative options.

Queensland – Where Australia Shines Get ready to take home marvellous memories of your Queensland experience – hours of sunshine and year-round tropical climates cultivate a sense of well-being and ultimate relaxation, along with the chance to indulge in your love of sports and outdoor recreation – it’s all here in this vast state of contrasts.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays hundreds of picturesque tropical islands.

Queensland’s cities and towns are thriving with cosmopolitan energy and a strongly defined sense of place. Make sure you catch all the important city sights. With innate optimism and eclectic appeal it’s no wonder Queensland is recognised as offering unbeatable nightlife, the most entertaining cities and why residents from all corners of the globe come to live here. You’ll never forget Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island just off the coast of beautiful Hervey Bay (our whale-watching capital). See nature’s wonders up close – turtle nesting, whale-watching, koalas and crocs – our wildlife abounds. Explore pristine beaches of the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, luxurious Whitsunday Islands and Heritage-Listed Daintree Rainforest in the Tropical North. With over 200 National Parks and a range of unique rainforests there’s something to please every nature-lover. One of the world’s seven natural marvels, the Great Barrier Reef is waiting for you to uncover its magic – under it, above it, on it – there’s a myriad of ways to enjoy it. The 3000 individual reefs and coral islands harbour thousands of fish and marine creatures. Watch the progression of protected humpback whales on their journey along the coast, while Mon Repos Beach near Bundaberg has the largest turtle rookery in the southern hemisphere – both unique sights to see. The Outback – there’s adventure out there! From rollicking stockmen to desert sand dunes and even the odd dinosaur – heritage-rich Matilda Country of the central west, Mining Country in the north west – right here in our backyard. Visit the Qantas Museum in Longreach – a tribute to Australia’s international airline and The Stockmans Hall Of Fame. Where else can boast an average of 300 sunny days a year? Average summer and winter temperatures range from 9C to 29C in Brisbane and 17C to 31C in Cairns. You won’t find anywhere much colder than 1C even in the hills of South East Queensland Country.

Just 30 minutes from Rockhampton, Central Queensland.

Welcome to Queensland – let the sunshine in.

More international visitors than ever are enjoying the pleasures our State has to offer with the Whitsundays the pick of the regions attracting strong numbers from the UK and Europe while the Gold Coast thrived from direct flights from Singapore and growth from China. The International Visitor Survey for 2013 from Tourism Research Australia showed 143,000 of the 648,000 who chose the Tropical North as their destination were from China alone. “While New Zealand continues to be Queensland’s largest market with 384,000 visitors, China remained our fastest growing and largest international market,” said Tourism Minister, Jann Stuckey.

The

DEPARTUREwithGATE Mike O'Connor

The only way to travel is as a couple! There are those who insist that the only way to travel is as a couple. Couples, they insist, are mutually supportive and they will remind you that two people sharing costs can travel more cheaply than when solo. There are drawbacks, however, when travelling in tandem and the most serious of these is that posed by other couples that presume that you are just dying to meet guess who? Other couples! It is not unknown, for example, for couples to become bored with each other’s company, particularly honeymooners newly arrived at the realization that they have just made the biggest mistake of their lives. When this occurs, they will inevitably seek out the company of other couples – you, for example – in the desperate hope that you will relieve the relentless tedium of their partner’s company. They will also hope that you will reassure them that marriage is wonderful and that while there is always a period of adjustment, things will ``work themselves out.’’ Some people, married for 50 years, have been known to pass into the hereafter still wondering when it was that things were going to ``work themselves out.’’ If you are alone you are safe from these marauding twosomes but if you are a couple, the cheery ``Good morning!’’ shouted across the width of several breakfast tables can presage conversational misery on a grand scale. Their next step is to ask from where you hail and then suggest meeting for a drink. At this point, the wise travellers

will reveal that they are suffering from haemorrhagic fever and excuse themselves. Failure to do this will see them exchanging addresses, a fraught process when dealing with people who can’t stand each other’s company. These are also precisely the sort of people who six months after your holiday, will email you with the joyous news that they will be arriving in your city in three weeks time. And the other good news? They have decided to take you up on that generous offer you made the night you drank 10 gin slings, the night you said they could stay with you for as long as they liked.

that while we were on a cruise, she went ashore and bought six pairs of shoes. Returning to the ship she announced this news to the French couple who had attached themselves to us. Alas, her imperfect French translated as ``I went shore and bought six young men.’’ The husband regarded her with awe but not the wife. They fled and never spoke to us again. If travelling with a mate, ensure there is no hidden agenda. I once left Australia with a male friend who somehow forgot to tell me that he had arranged for his girlfriend to meet us halfway through our driving holiday across the United States. We were camping which meant once she arrived, I was evicted from our two man tent and slept in the back of our station wagon. Each night I’d lie there in my sleeping bag staring at the roof lining while stuffing things in my ears – tissues, cotton wool, half eaten Minties – it didn’t matter – anything to try and block out the moans and groans rattling the walls of the nearby tent. We parted company after a week and my Minties and I went our separate way. My partner has accused me of being anti-social when we travel. I have pointed out that this is untrue. It’s just that I don’t like meeting people.

Chock full of Back Chat

"That’s hilarious. They actually believe we gave them our real address and phone number!" I once travelled with a woman who drew couples to her like moths to a flame. Language was not a constraint, a barrier she overcame by speaking broken English very slowly. She did, however, speak French very badly and so it was

SUNSHINE COAST Swimming with the whales Rainbow Beach - known as Sunreef Mooloolaba is giving you the chance to swim with the captivating humpback whales and see them from a different perspective. Whale Encounter Supervisor, Dan Hart swam with whales in Tonga and describes it as a life-changing experience. “To have a whale just a couple of metres away looking you right in the eye – it’s indescribable. It give you a deeper sense of these amazing creatures and we’re excited to be able to bring it to everyone,” he said. The swimming experience is operated under a strict Code Of Conduct to protect both you and the whales on the three-hour round trip with maximum of 20 people.

“The boat is put into neutral 100m or more away, then turned off with swimmers allowed into the water holding onto the attached floating line – then it’s all up to the whale,” said Dan. “Whales seem as intrigued by us as we are of them and glide effortlessly around us with a gentleness as if they recognise our fragility and know we are there out of wonder and respect.” Sunreef is as PADI 5 Star Training Centre with Sunreef Scuba Diving Services the longest established dive centre on the Sunshine Coast. Mon Repos Turtles – back in November Mon Repos Beach 15 minutes from Bundaberg’s city centre has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland and most significant loggerhead population in the South Pacific. Turtle Watching Time begins in early November through to March when the hatchlings scurry out of the nest down to the ocean. These “grand old ladies of the deep” can travel up to 3000 kms to their traditional nesting beach every few years. “Researchers now also have an idea where they go in between visits,” said one of the rangers. “A satellite tracking device placed on the turtle’s carapace sends signals showing how long they take to travel from feeding grounds to nesting areas.”

Blue Lagoon Cruises – seeing the real Fiji by Michael McRae. The recent re-launch of 60 year old Blue Lagoon Cruises with new 3, 4 and 7 night itineraries - plus the fabulous make-over of flagship vessel Fiji Princess - reveals the remote Yasawa Islands in a uniquely personal style. Coastline Newspaper’s Managing Editor, Michael McRae flew on Fiji Airways from Brisbane to Nadi Airport then onto Port Denerau Marina to begin an idyllic 4 night cruise, including exploring the location for the movie, The Blue Lagoon. “It was first filmed in 1949 in the Yasawa Islands starring Jean Simmons, and reshot in 1980 just off Nanyua Lailai Island with Brooke Shields. And it’s easy to see why they chose this location for both movies – it’s breathtakingly beautiful and better still, it’s Blue Lagoon Cruises’ private island which was available exclusively for our enjoyment. Although the description “island paradise” is somewhat overused, this is exactly where we spent an unforgettable day swimming, snorkelling or choosing to drink in the beauty with a walk along the white beach.

PHOTO 107 MUSICIANS

Captain Jitoko (4th from left) leads the nightly entertainment around the Kava bowl. And what a friendly crew, a great bunch of people who gave us superb service with Captain Jitoko a man of many guises, filling roles from musician (ukelele and bongos) to fisherman. You sometimes noticed him snorkelling beside you while the Fiji Princess was serenely tied up to her own coconut palm – suddenly I don’t think I want to go back to the “real world” – this is heaven!

See the real Fiji on the Fiji Princess. unique Fijian cultural experiences and interaction plus options of swimming with Manta Rays, fire dancing, a night at Tom Hanks’ “Castaway” island, and swimming in the Sawa-I-Lau Caves presided over by the 10-headed god, Ultini. Fortunately he didn’t show up when the more adventurous among us swam through a short underwater tunnel into a second cavern with the light filtering gently through a hole in the ceiling . We felt like we were in a romantic movie ourselves!

Cruises are strongly Fijian Executive Director of Blue Lagoon Cruises, Chris Jacobs said he’s proud of

the fact that guests are looked after by all Fijian staff, meet and interact with Fijian villagers of the islands along the way – it’s their home so who better to show it to you? We were certainly treated as honoured guests taking part in the Yaqona (Kava) ceremony of welcome, being shown their homes and gardens - the school children especially were delightful to meet. Very laid-back, casual and relaxing, music and a party atmosphere every night - with a maximum of 68 guests, this experience is ideal for those who may not have been on a cruise before or looking for something a little more private than a large ocean going ship – no better way to be introduced to Fiji.” For information www.bluelagooncruises.com

Sailing into the sunset PHOTO SNORKEL NO CAPTION PHOTO EARTH OVEN

At night we indulged in the traditional island feast (lovo) an earth oven where sumptuous meats and vegetables individually wrapped in banana leaves cook slowly on hot stones – unforgettable, especially under lantern-lit trees on a tropical island. I particularly enjoyed the luscious fruits available at just about every meal – especially the papaya.

Blue Lagoon’s itineraries have been enhanced providing more daily activities,

Bula - You have arrived somewhere special The Fiji Islands number 333, with Viti Levu the largest and often referred to as the mainland. Suva is the capital and a 30 minute drive from Nausori Airport on the eastern side. Nadi on the western side is considered Fiji’s tourism hub and home to Nadi International Airport, Fiji’s main global gateway.

The Yasawa Islands This group is made up of 20 islands of volcanic origin, north west of Viti Levu with the region made famous as location for the film, “Blue Lagoon” . They are renowned for their laid back pace, with white beaches, crystalline waters and lush forest against a backdrop of soaring peaks.
