Shop small, shop local!

Why risk your health (and sanity) at crowded malls on Black Friday? Take advantage of incredible offerings in your own neighborhood on Small Business Saturday, November 28, throughout the South Coast. Check out sbsshopri. com for shop-and-stroll events in Rhode Island. For that special gift, support local craftsmen and artists by heading over to the Waterfire Arts Center in Providence to visit the safe outdoor pop-up markets (waterfire.org/art-mart). And on First Thursdays (November 5) you can “shop and dine local” in Barrington, Bristol, and Warren (discovernewport.org).

Kick-off the holiday season at Frerichs Farm in Warren with “Girls Night Out” on November 6, 7 and 8 – buy your holiday trees, greenery, and gifts there, too (frerichsfarm.com). Then mark your calendar for the Newport Block Party & Holiday Stroll at Bowen’s Wharf on November 27 – you can watch the Illuminated Boat Parade while you shop and enjoy Caribbean music (bowenswharf.com).

It’s the thoughtful gifts that count

And if you can’t find gifts for all the special people in your life, consider buying gift cards to restaurants, shops, vineyards, special event venues, local farms, e-commerce websites, or grocery stores. Use mail-order services to deliver flowers, sweets, and specialty foods yearround to someone you want to thank or to express your appreciation.

BIG CELEBRATIONS Little village

Located on picturesque Onset Bay, the idyllic setting of the “Gateway to the Cape” promises to once again deliver fun for families and guests of all ages. In addition to the events that will fill its calendar throughout July and August, the Onset experience includes a variety of opportunities for dining and shopping, as well as beachgoing and ocean enjoyment.

From pizza to seafood to ice cream, Onset village provides an array of enjoyable foods including a breakfast spot and waterfront dining. Gift shops are available for browsing, including the work of local artists, while boutique hotels are available for those who wish for an extended stay. An hour from Boston and Providence, the village also offers the scenic Onset Beach where you can spend a morning or an afternoon. If you want to take to the ocean,

kayaks and boats are available for rent. Both free parking and affordable parking are available.

And those who are in search of even more Onset activities have many opportunities throughout the season.

Starting on Saturday, July 1, the Onset Pier will be the site of the annual Blessing of the Fleet. Beginning at 10 a.m., the event will kick off the summer with as many as 40 boats receiving a holy water blessing from a priest, which is followed by a rendition of the National Anthem.

Immediately following the blessing, the Pier will be the location of a Kids’ Parade.

“The Kids’ Parade is an adorable spectacle,” says Kat Jones, Executive Director of the Onset Bay Association. “It’s an over-the-top opportunity for kids to strut their stuff and parade around the pier with their decorated bicycles, pets, and doll carriages.”

On Saturday, July 15, Onset Beach will be the location for Family Beach Day. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this free event will include the local sand sculptor, Rodney the Sandman, helping kids and adults create their own sand creations on the beach. The event will include beach toys to help people indulge

themselves in their sand art. The beach is located at 186 Onset Ave.

Music fans have a lot of opportunities to enjoy themselves as well. On Wednesday nights throughout July and August, the Lillian Gregerman Band Shell will host a variety of musical acts from throughout the area. Located at 1 Union Ave, the free concerts will last from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. For a list of entertainers you can consult the Association’s website, onsetbay.org.

Another unique Onset offering is the annual Illumination Night. The event that was first held 100 years ago as a welcoming to retuning sailors and fishermen, will be held on Saturday, August 5 and is open to the public. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Bayview Park next to the Pier at 186 Onset Ave, the evening will offer Balloon Art for kids by the group “What the Fun,

From 8:15 to 9 p.m. LED-lighted dancers, Circus Dynamics, will entertain visitors. The evening will culminate with the lighting of 1,000 red flares that will surround the perimeter of the bay, creating a low-key atmosphere as a salute to the unofficial end of summer. The flares will glow for 30 minutes.

Big bash

One of Onset’s largest events is the annual Cape Verdean Festival. Held on Saturday, August 12, this free event will start at 11 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. Located at the Band Shell across from the Pier, the event is expected to draw upwards of 9,000 visitors from around the country who will enjoy Cape Verdean music, food and merchandise from as many as 80 vendors. A tented area with tables and chairs will be available. Kathy Andrews will perform the National Anthem and Candida Rose will sing the Cape Verdean National Anthem. Music will be provided by Xaxe & Da Boys Band, and Milton Tavares & Friends featuring Calu Bana and Fantcha.

“This is a Cape Verdean family reunion,” says Tiny Lopes, one of the event

organizers and a Wareham native. “It’s the largest Cape Verdean festival in America. People come every year from California to Florida to enjoy reconnecting with family and friends. Over the years we’ve been able to do this event thanks to the support of local businesses, politicians, and the town.”

Parking for the festival will be at Lopes Field and Hines Field with a free shuttle that will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rain date is Sunday, August 13.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to channel your inner artist, Onset’s Ninth Annual “Chalk Full O Fun” event will once again enliven the village’s atmosphere. On Saturday, August 19, guests can purchase a $5 box of pastel chalk and decorate a 4-x-4-foot sidewalk square with the design of their own creation. In addition to prizes for different age groups, there will be a juried craft fair along with live music. Held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event results in the creation of a massive public art display with the creative contributions of as many as 200 artists. This year the event will include a featured artist, Amanda Sellars.

DON’T RUST Rebels

As the vocalist for the hardcore punk band American War Machine, the new co-owner of Dipper Café in New Bedford’s North End, the owner of a custom motorcycle shop, and the host of a popular podcast and a television show, the 51-year-old Gagne is living a diverse and unconventional life. And that’s just what he wants.

“I was attracted to punk rock for the same reasons I’m into it today: the rebellion, questioning authority, and speaking truth to power,” Gagne says. “I don’t believe the mainstream narratives that the government and big corporations are sending our way.”

Gagne’s introduction to punk rock came when he was 13 years old,

living in Dartmouth and listening to underground music on the UMass Dartmouth radio station, WSMU.

“I loved bands like Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Kennedys, Agent

Orange, Discharge, GBH, and Blitz,” he says. “I would record songs on the radio and go to Good Vibrations in Dartmouth to try to find records by the bands they played.”

And punk rock meant bonding with similar spirits.

“Most of my really tight, lifelong friends that I have today were made during that time in my life,” he says. “I loved that it was a tightknit community. Back then it wasn’t cool to be into the punk rock culture, so you had to have a tightknit crew. You were fighting people for what you believed in. I was getting into one or two altercations a week for being a skateboarding punk rock kid. I made really tight bonds with people who

Belonging and rebellion are important components of many teenagers’ lives, and for Freetown’s Josh Gagne, punk rock was the perfect soundtrack for his adolescence – a timely melding of frustrations and friendships, messages that still resonate with him to this day.
COVER STORY
“I was attracted to punk rock for the same reasons I’m into it today: the rebellion, questioning authority, and speaking truth to power."

introduced me to more bands, we made cassette tapes of bands, and shared them with each other.”

Gagne has seen social and cultural shifts around punk rock.

“A lot of the punk rock kids today are being co-opted,” he says. “They’re going along, forgetting Punk Rock 101, which questions authority. No one’s doing that anymore and it’s more important than ever. It wasn’t like it is now where the punk rockers are the cool kids.”

American War Machine makes intense music and Gagne’s vocal delivery is a guttural shriek that may seem like torture on his vocal cords. He got his start as a hardcore vocalist with the band Intent To Injure in 1987, and would eventually become the voice of the band Civil Defense a decade later. American War Machine formed in 2016, and they have released a full-length record (“Unholy War”) and the single “Prey Drive,” both available online. The band performs throughout the northeast, with many shows in the Boston area.

From his first rehearsals with Intent To Injure, Gagne was strengthening his voice into the powerhouse he is today.

“In that band we didn’t have a P.A. system and a microphone, so I had to scream to be heard over the amps and drums,” he recalls. “Singing this music is therapeutic. The hardcore music scene is a major part of my life, and there’s no shortage of things to be pissed off about.”

Gagne has grown from his days of basement bands. This February, American War Machine toured Europe as part of the “Boston Takeover 2023 Tour,” where they played 17 shows in 17 days. The stretch included shows in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Austria, and Czechia. American War Machine was joined on the tour by Boston hardcore bands Slapshot, Death Before Dishonor, and Risk.

“It was great waking up every day in another country with a completely different culture from the one you were in the day before,” he says. “Audiences in Europe are really into this stuff, and they’re very

appreciative of bands from America.

In Europe people come out to shows more. There’s a large turnout. Scenes and venues are funded by the governments of the countries. They make guarantees and there’s greater hospitality for the bands so it’s easier to tour there.”

MOSHING AND MORE

But Gagne has plenty taking place on this side of the Atlantic. Last October, he bought the Dipper Café with Quincy’s Ryan Packer, the bass player for both American War Machine and Slapshot. They purchased the bar from Josh’s father, Wayne Gagne, and his business partner Kirk Whiting. Packer and Gagne have been friends for more than a dozen years.

Since reopening last November, the Dipper Café is off to a good start. Every Tuesday night it is the site for open mics, an opportunity for local musicians to perform that is drawing a robust turnout. The bar recently offered an acoustic performance by the Boston punk band, A Loss for Words, that filled the room. Gagne and Packer are planning to do more acoustic shows with national bands that they have made connections with during their punk rock careers. They also intend to have Gong Show Karaoke Nights in addition to pool and darts leagues. “We don’t have enough space for five-piece electronic bands,” Gagne says. “But things are going well with the open mics. Chris Guaraldi, the host, is doing an amazing job coordinating it and bringing people in.”

The Dipper Café is not Gagne’s only business endeavor. He also owns the tattoo shop Atomic Ink in Swansea, and Choppahead Kustom Cycles in Freetown. He is the host of two media ventures: the Big Truth Podcast and Choppahead TV. The Big Truth Podcast is receiving ample attention on Spotify, featuring interviews with people who “live and breathe outside the mainstream conventional box… exploring different views on contemporary topics and alternative career paths.” Choppahead TV is a show on the Tubi channel that broadcasts programming devoted to custom bike builders, craftsmen, and motorcycle events. Season 1 is available now.

Gagne is also a graduate of GNB Voc-Tech with a concentration in Graphic Arts.

American War Machine is in the process of writing new material as a follow-up to “Unholy War,” which was released in 2019. Like many hardcore bands, American War Machine will play as many all-ages concerts as possible – events that were vital experiences for Gagne during his adolescent years.

“As a kid, all-ages shows were super important, because they were the only shows we could go to,” Gagne says. “Cool bands playing 21-plus shows were a bummer because we couldn’t get in. There were more matinee shows and all-ages shows back then. The world was less litigious, you could get away with more.”

But being a part of the punk and hardcore scene goes beyond the music.

“When you go to punk and hardcore shows you get introduced to the culture, you inevitably get more involved,” Gagne says. “With the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ ethic that’s involved, you may start selling merchandise, you may start a record label, you may start a magazine, you may start taking photographs, you may learn some skills. When we were young we started booking our own shows and it was a bonding experience. Hardcore is a tight-knit, participatory scene – it’s something you don’t leave.”

Leah Marie Doroch of Westport is a holistic medicine success story. While in her early 30s, this mother of two young children suffered a near-death accident while riding a horse. Her recovery would include an introduction to holistic medical approaches that would inspire her to reach out to others, perpetuating the success she had experienced in her own life.

Today, Doroch helps others in a variety of ways. As a board-certified holistic practitioner and holistic life coach, she uses her education to benefit people dealing with a variety of situations. And as the owner and CEO of Professional Care Match , she spearheads a company that incorporates holistic approaches as it specializes in assisted care for the elderly and end-of-life patients.

“When I had my accident, I went on an eye-opening healing journey to treat my post-traumatic stress and anxiety, I became a student of holistic practices,” Doroch says. “I needed to do something to help people and I knew there were ways to manage our conditions other than medicines. I knew first hand that holistic

treatments like yoga and meditation work.”

Among Doroch’s multiple certifications and education background in ayurvedic practices, she is also a reiki master and a yoga instructor.

Hungry? November is your month, with tasty days sprinkled throughout, odes to everything from banana pudding to vinegar and everything in between, including hot sauce, nachos, pickles, espresso, deviled eggs, French toast and more. Honoring all that grub makes perfect sense that November 15 is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.

“I have the tools to enhance a patient’s physical and emotional well-being, enlivening the nourishing connection between mind, body, and spirit, bringing balance and healing into your life,” she says. Dorch offers an array of programs based on her ayurvedic studies, including weight loss, stress management, chronic pain management, overcoming PTSD, meditation, and caregiver stress.

In closing, and in observance of November being an election month, I’d like to add it is now National Impotency Month, which has nothing to do with the Republicans in Congress, much as it sounds like it should.

Happy winter, people! All eight damn months of it.

“These are long-term solutions to revitalizing our lives, providing balance, self-care, and personal growth,” Doroch says. “It’s based on a 5,000-year old healing system of medicine.”

But Doroch has another medical identity – she is the owner of Professional Care Match, a company that helps people in need of end-of-life care.

Doroch was inspired to start Professional Care Match in part due to her experiences with her grandfather. She is a certified end-of-life coach, also known as a doula.

“When I was eight years old my grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It was really challenging for our family because there wasn’t a lot of education and understanding at that time,” she says. “People were put into an institution and heavily medicated. Behaviors weren’t managed in a way that was humane.

“Today there are wonderful, positive ways to manage the disease process and the challenges that people with dementia have. It’s really about diving deep into who they were and having a lot of respect for them – utilizing the knowledge of what they did for their career, what their cultural beliefs were, and their daily routine. With our company we look at the whole person and develop a plan that soothes them and brings them into positive places.”

Pedal Power

Afew years ago, I was riding my bicycle on Mattapoisett Neck Road (the road where I grew up) and headed to the section of the bike path that was paved: the trail that heads west to Brandt Island Road, and beyond that Fairhaven was headed into downtown New Bedford over the Fairhaven bridge, navigating a bit off the bike path as I cycled through Fairhaven village. While I was crossing Neck Road in Mattapoisett, I met a family of four on their bikes. They were stopped, looking down at a map, and considering how to get to Cape Cod. We chatted for a while, and they told me they were from Germany, and asked for advice about how to go east. I shuddered. That direction would lead them to Route Six (intimidating, especially with a family) and along some roads with no sidewalks onto back roads in Rochester and beyond. They were perplexed and I felt like a terrible host. This was my town, and I had no options to offer them for their journey, so with a resigned farewell message (“Good luck! Be careful! Auf Wiedersehen! ”) I pedaled

From Neck Road heading east, the new section of the Rail Trail, some twenty years in the making, takes cyclists and walkers alike over raised sections of wide planks with expansive views of the Mattapoisett River, marshes, the Mattapoisett YMCA, Reservation Golf Course, and then on into Mattapoisett Village where one can be refreshed with a beverage from Town Wharf General Store or the Inn at Shipyard Park’s iconic porch.

in the other direction, wondering about what it was like to bicycle where they’re from. Easier, I bet.

Today, their journey in Mattapoisett would be much safer and more bucolic. From Neck Road heading east, the new section of the Rail Trail, some twenty years in the making, takes cyclists and walkers alike over raised sections of

wide planks with expansive views of the Mattapoisett River, marshes, the Mattapoisett YMCA, Reservation Golf Course, and then on into Mattapoisett Village where one can be refreshed with a beverage from Town Wharf General Store or the Inn at Shipyard Park’s iconic porch. If you want to make a day of it or take a picnic, it’s even possible to lock up your bike at the trail head and hike down to Nasketucket Bay State Reservation. You can swim or walk on the rocky shoreline of Nasketucket with a quick hike down a grassy trail.

In other words: we are getting closer to being good hosts to cyclists and pedestrians in this part of the South Coast. Now, it’s here for all of us. The bike path was officially christened with a ribbon cutting on June 12 this year.

Nostalgia might creep in to those of us who grew up along those formerly dirt roads, with overgrown brush, visions of our teenage selves scrambling down from a rickety bridge to dip our toes in the Mattapoisett River, or lean over the railing to see the Herring Run. But I don’t

As any student of history knows, prior to colonial settlement in the 16001800s, the land belonged to no one, and remains the ancestral territory of the Wampanoag tribal peoples. Perhaps this bike path is a way to reach across the long arm of justice and give the views back to the people, though admittedly the Wampanoag tribe did not have a say in the creation of the path nor of the taking of their land centuries ago.

Looking back, moving forward

Funny thing about going back in time: you can’t. That’s not the funny part. The funny part is how badly many of us seem to want what we just can’t have. So yeah, you can’t go back in time. But the past is something you can visit. You just can’t – or shouldn’t – live there. Last month, I was lucky enough to attend a staged reading of a new work at 2nd Act in Boston, a new entity that formed with the merger of Creating Outreach About Addiction Support Together (COAAST), a nonprofit based in Rhode Island, and Improbable Players of Boston. 2nd Act is a collective of artists, many in recovery, that uses theater, film and drama therapy to address the impact of substance abuse. We did the same thing at COAAST, but the merger allows the new nonprofit a far greater reach.

The new work that was read that night was outstanding, visceral, and heartfelt. I loved being there to watch, and it was especially gratifying seeing familiar faces from my COAAST days, like Ana Bess Moyer Bell, now executive director of 2nd Act, and Rachel Tondreault, Cam Torres, and Paul Noonan, who work at 2nd act as actors and writers.

It felt like I’d come home, honestly. I've said it before many times: my work during

ON MY MIND

COAAST's salad days (2016-pandemic) was by far the most important acting I'll ever do, bar none, and seeing the people who became family to me was surreal and sweet.

At COAAST, we did our shows for students in high schools across the South Coast and beyond, and for other groups as well, and our play about the impact of addiction on family hit home with so many in attendance. The talkbacks after our shows were exhilarating, draining, powerful, painful, as people would stand, often in tears, pouring out their hearts about loss or triumph, our space giving them the power to feel whatever they needed to feel – to heal.

I was prouder still that my son, a long-time recovering addict, joined us at COAAST back in the day to help out with presentations and to write a play with me about our journey together to recovery that played three times until the pandemic brought the world to a stop.

One time back in those days, we at COAAST were part of a public seminar at the Veterans Auditorium in Providence, and my son was invited to talk about his recovery. In rehearsal that day, I watched him from the wings, overcome with pride and sobbed like a baby, trying to hold it in. And like a good family member, Rachel came over and just held me

tightly, rocking me as I wept, letting me know it was absolutely okay to let it out. There are very special people who touch our lives in a way we’ll never forget and Rachel is one of those very special people. I adore her like a daughter.

I don’t do those shows anymore. I do mostly film now – TV, movies, commercials, whatever comes along that satisfies my acting bug. I got into the game in my 50s, and had wanted to do it since I was a kid, but didn’t because I was afraid of failing the only thing I ever wanted to do. Happily, I got over that and it’s all I do now, and acting touches part of me that I embrace with every fiber of my creative soul. I miss those days of COAAST and connections made. I miss theater in general but doing it for COAAST most of all. And to step back into that realm that night in June for a short time to see other people doing this incredible work made my heart sing and ache at once. Those scant few years spent with the best people I will ever love were some of the best of my life.

I thought of all this that night, walking down the streets of the Boston’s South End on a beautiful spring night that I guess just made me pensive, but introspection can be its own reward.

Looking back in time isn't always a good thing, except when it's a great thing. And that night was.
