’ve always enjoyed summer; long warm days, no school for the kids, and of course, time to take some vacations. May and June were extremely busy for the team at JGK Media as we were invited to four different automotive events over a span of 5 weeks. So while I was working hard and attending these events in North America or Europe, my family seemed to think I was on vacation most of the time. Little do they know the long days journalists put in – that will be another story, another time. We would like to welcome Miranda Lightstone to our magazine – Miranda has been an automotive journalist and AJAC member for many years and brings some great insights in her reviews. In this issue, Miranda drives the new 2017 F-Pace, Jaguar’s first SUV. I had the opportunity to drive the 2017 Volvo S90 in beautiful Spain and wow, what a vehicle. In addition, Chris Chase looks at the new Ford Edge and Aman Sundher shares his thoughts about the Subaru Crosstrek. I cannot emphasize how much driving style and techniques impact the fuel economy of a vehicle. Odometer Rollback Warning to Richmond Car Buyers

T

he Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia (VSA) is warning car buyers in the Richmond and Delta areas to avoid the

purchase of vehicles associated with Arthur Tong, Delta Well or New Star Motors due to the deliberate illegal sale of vehicles with tampered odometers. Arthur Tong had sold these vehicles while posing as a private seller. Following a detailed investigation and hearing, Ian Christman, the Registrar of Motor Dealers, cancelled the dealer registration of Delta Well Ltd. dba New Star Motors and the salesperson licence of owner

Arthur Tong. Mr. Tong was issued a lifetime ban and is to have no affiliation with a motor dealer in British Columbia. During the investigation and initial suspension of the motor dealer, the VSA supervised the return of over $118,000 to 30 consumers, including the buyback of two vehicles. In the May 24, 2016 Decision, the Registrar determined that, after openly admitting to routinely rolling back odometers, “Mr. Tong was not apologetic and compensated consumers only after being caught.” It was also apparent that Mr. Tong showed “no indication of remorse or any evidence of rehabilitation or insight into the impact of his actions.” As a result, there is concern that Mr. Tong may continue to engage in unlawful activity as an unlicensed seller, or curber, and may continue to pose harm to consumers. The VSA is asking that consumers who have knowledge of any current unlawful or prohibited activities by Mr. Tong, or who may have been affected by his actions in the past but were not located during the course of the investigation, to contact the VSA.

New Car Tech Can Remind You to Check Your Back Seat

W

e hear reminders every summer not to leave children or pets in hot cars. One car company has come up with some new technology to try to combat the issue but according to an industry expert, it doesn’t go far enough. The new feature comes in the new GMC Acadia. The vehicle senses when a rear door is opened and then the vehicle is started, or if a door is opened while it’s running. It then uses chimes to remind the driver to check the back seat when the car is turned off. Driving.ca Senior Writer, David Booth, says it’s something he’d like to see expanded to other vehicles but not in it’s current form. He says, “on top of the current system that gives you an alert when you get out of the car might be an app that chimes on your phone 15 minutes after you go into a supermarket.” Booth is also skeptical about whether someone could simply forget about a pet or child in the back seat.

Frank Affettuso To Announce His Retirement & the Sale of Southside Nissan to the Dilawri Group of Companies

N

inety year old Frank Affettuso, owner of Southside Nissan in Vancouver, will officially announce his retirement after 44 years of running the 2nd largest Nissan dealership in British Columbia, on Tuesday, July 12 from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at 290 S.W. Marine Drive in Vancouver. He will also welcome the new in-coming owner of Southside Nissan - the Dilawri Group of Companies. Southside Nissan opened its doors in 1972 and at the time was a Nissan flagship, state-of the-art dealership. Over the past 44 years, Southside Nissan has sold approximately 24,000 new, and 11,000 preowned vehicles. Frank Affettuso has been the sole owner of the dealership for 25 years, and family members Marty McKinney (son) and Jerry Scarfo (cousin) also started working at the dealership in 1972. There is currently 38 staff employed at Southside Nissan.

Porsche Panamera a Leaner, Meaner Executive Racing Car

T

he new Porsche Panamera takes lessons, rather than simply design cues form the latest generation 911. It uses an exotic cocktail of construction materials to increase rigidity while shedding the pounds but when it comes to its look and feel it is finally coming into its own. “Its strengths have been reinforced, its weaknesses eradicated and above all its character preserved,” said Michael Mauer, Head of Style Porsche AG. Not that the original car was a disappointment, despite being somewhat of a departure from Porsche’s core business of focused sportscars, over 150,000 Panameras have been sold to date. To ensure the new car picks up and accelerates further where the old car left off, many of the proportions remain intact, visually so as not to alienate exiting owners. But everything is tighter and sharper. “The new Panamera can be made out at first glance as a Panamera, but also as the new Panamera,” said Mauer. “An observer will immediately recognize the coupélike roof line, but now it is much ‘faster,’ even more dynamic and now includes a new side window look that emphasizes the coupé-like side view even more.” Ensuring that the car offers more than sporting looks, at launch in November it will come with a 550 hp twin-turbo V8 (complete with 3.6-second 0-100 km/h time) and a 2.9-liter twin turbo V6. A diesel will also be an initial option but four-wheeldrive and an eight-speed paddle-shift gearbox will be standard equipment on all models. All performance figures top those of the outgoing model even though the car is now longer and wider than its predecessor. In fact, it’s as big as an Audi A8 or BMW 7 Series sedan. And while Porsche is certain it can match both for comfort and toys -- it has next-generation air suspension, a virtual smartphone and tablet inspired cockpit, plus all associated connectivity services and supporting apps -- it leaves them behind in terms of handling and engaged driving. So confident is Porsche of the new car’s impact that at its unveiling on Tuesday evening in Berlin, company CEO Oliver Blume called the car a new generation of Gran Turismo. “We have tapped into the segment of luxury sport saloons with the Panamera,” he said. “In the new model, you see here a completely redeveloped automobile -- with new engines, a new design and new technologies.” 8

Anton Yelchin, ‘Star Trek’ Actor, Killed by Own Car at Age 27

A

nton Yelchin, a rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new Star Trek films, was killed by his own car as it rolled backward down his driveway early Sunday, police and his publicist said. The car pinned Yelchin, 27, against a brick mailbox pillar and a security fence at his home in Studio City, according to Los Angeles police Officer Jenny Hosier. He had gotten out of the vehicle momentarily, but police did not say why he was behind it when it started rolling. Yelchin was on his way to meet friends for a rehearsal, Hosier said. When he didn’t show up, the group came to his home and found him dead. The freak accident tragically cuts short the promising career of an actor whom audiences were still getting to know. Yelchin began acting as a child, taking small roles in independent films and various television shows, such as ER, The Practice, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. His breakout big-screen role came opposite Anthony Hopkins in 2001’s Hearts in Atlantis. He transitioned into teenage roles in films such as the crime thriller Alpha Dog” and the teen comedy Charlie Bartlett. He also played a young Kyle Reese in 2009’s Terminator Salvation. Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. He briefly flirted with skating lessons, too, before discovering that he wasn’t very skilled on the ice. That led him to acting class. “I loved the improvisation part of it the most, because it was a lot like just playing around with stuff. There was something about it that I just felt completely comfortable doing and happy doing,” Yelchin told The Associated Press in 2011 while promoting the romantic drama Like Crazy. He starred opposite Felicity Jones. “(My father) still wanted me to apply to college and stuff, and I did,” Yelchin said. “But this is what I wanted.” His biggest role to date has been in the rebooted Star Trek films as the heavily accented navigator Chekov, for which he was able to draw on his Russian roots. The third film in the series, Star Trek Beyond, comes out in July. “What’s great about him is he can do anything. He’s a chameleon. He can do bigger movies or smaller, more intimate ones,” Like Crazy director Drake Doremus told the AP in 2011. “There are a lot of people who can’t, who can only do one or the other . . . That’s what blows my mind.” Yelchin transitioned between the big sci-fi franchise and voicing a part for The Smurfs. He also appeared in more eccentric and artier fare, like Jim Jarmusch’s vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive and Jeremy Saulnier’s horror thriller Green Room, a cult favourite that came out earlier this year.

‘Top Gear’ Host Chris Evans Quits BBC’s Flagship Car Show

T

op Gear host Chris Evans announced Monday that he’s quitting the BBC’s flagship car show after just one series. Evans, 50, who also hosts a popular BBC radio breakfast show, told his 2.31 million Twitter followers: “Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot, but sometimes that’s not enough. The team are beyond brilliant. I wish them all the best.” The adrenaline-fueled car show has struggled to draw a big audience since it was relaunched in May, hosted by Evans and former Friends star Matt LeBlanc. The revamped show attracted just 1.9 million viewers to its season finale on Sunday, down from 5.8 million viewers when outspoken trio Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were at the helm. Mark Linsey, director of BBC Studios, says Evans believes that the remaining producing and presenting team will be able to “take the show forward and make it the hit we want it to be.” It’s not yet known whether LeBlanc will stay on for a second series

of the show. Evans and LeBlanc were joined by a string of celebrities throughout the series, including Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey and Absolutely Fabulous creator Jennifer Saunders. The high-profile guests failed to boost audience ratings. The rebooted show launched with high hopes of 4.4 million viewers, but quickly halved, plummeting to around 2 million viewers for the remainder of the season. The departure of Evans means more intense scrutiny for a program that has become more than a TV show in Britain. The fine-tuned formula of blokey banter, consumer advice and automotive stunts has made the show a cultural touchstone for car fans. The BBC says it is watched by 350 million people around the world. Clarkson and his fellow presenters left last year after an off-set dustup in which Clarkson punched a producer. The trio will host a new car show, The Grand Tour, on Amazon Prime, a competitor to Netflix, this autumn.

STEPONA, Spain – It’s never easy to break new ground; many have tried and only a select few have succeeded. But when done correctly, the world really takes notice. When asked to think of a premium European luxury vehicle, the usual suspects always stand out: BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. But recently, I was invited to beautiful Spain and a “sleeper” Swedish brand really made me take notice. Following the footsteps of the award-winning and successful XC90, Volvo has now launched the all new S90, a flagship that I think will make quite the impression.

olvo, when owned by Ford for 10 years until 2010, was stuck to the same bland design elements. There wasn’t anything creative, until the brand was bought by a Chinese company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company Ltd., or Geely for short. Wanting to make some drastic changes, it was reported that Geely spent about $11 billion in new infrastructure and support for Volvo – and it seems to have worked. The 2017 S90 is the first Volvo to be built on the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. According to Kyle Denton from Volvo Canada, SPA will, “open new opportunities in the way future products will be designed, built and equipped, while still conforming to factory standards.” In essence, multiple vehicles can share the same production line, which will not only increase manufacturing efficiency, but maintain Volvo’s vision for continuity. 12

Looks and Design: Volvo cars were never on the edge of design; they were bland and had followed the same conservative looks for years and years. The XC90 was the first to break free from this boxy mold and now, the S90 does the same. This 4-door sedan has flagship written all over it; it has a strong, elegant stance and looks absolutely stunning. Up front, the S90 introduces a new concave waterfall grille, which embodies Volvo’s Iron Mark emblem badge. To make sure the gods were kept happy, Thor’s Hammer styled daytime running lights are embedded into HID headlights. Even though the S90 is a flagship sedan, the long hood and steeply raked windshield convey a sporty look. On the sides, the lines are clean and there are hints of the XC90. And to make sure that others take European brands take notice, the rear small window also shares a look similar to a BMW. Compared to the rest of the car, the tail of the S90 fell a little short; from certain angles, it doesn’t match the

2017 Volvo S90 Inscription beauty of the rest of the car. Our test vehicle did, however, have a lip spoiler that helped. The best feature of the S90 has to be its interior; it is simply stunning and I would put it on par with most other European luxury vehicles. The S90’s interior borrows from the XC90, but takes comfort and design to a higher level. There’s a great blend of leather and wood, keeping true to Scandinavian roots. What can I say about the front seats except they are comfortable, with our test vehicles having heated and cooled seats; for our drives in sunny, warm Spain, the cooled seats were definitely enjoyed. Although I only spent a few minutes in the rear seats, I can attest they comfortable and there is plenty of head and leg room. Long distance travel, here we come.

record, something we all should look forward to. The XC90 was the first Volvo to showcase the large iPad-like Sensus Connect touchscreen, and I liked it a lot. The S90 has the same setup and again it works flawlessly. Yes, you do have to get accustomed to the layout, size, and workings, but it’s pretty easy. After listening to various tracks on the sound system, another tick mark for sound quality and richness, thanks to the Bowers & Wilkins setup. The Drive: Our test drive routes took us through the hills above Marbella via winding roads, highways, back roads, and even tight city streets. One of my first impressions of the S90 was how quiet the vehicle was. According to Kent Falck, Volvo’s New Car Director, “a lot of work went into making sure the vehicle exemplifies what luxury should be. For example, even the speakers and subwoofer are integrated into the body to give the best sound experience without the interference of road or engine noise.” For Canada, the S90 will have the same powertrain as the XC90; thus, we’ll have the supercharged and turbocharged fourcylinder engine that pushes out 316 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Although it’s not going burn through tires, this motor does have enough power for a 0-100 km/h run of just 5.9 seconds. That’s pretty credible for this car, considering that it’s only a four. We had no problems in pushing the cars through the various roads

Safety and Technology: Think Volvo and you know you’re getting leading edge safety, and the tradition continues with the S90. There’s all the usual safety components but let’s look at what’s new. For us in Canada, where sometimes, there’s big game on roads, Volvo has introduced the world-first Large Animal Detection feature. In conjunction with the car’s City Safety option, there’s now intuitive warnings and braking assist in the potential you’re about to collide with people, deer, moose, etc. We were also able to test out Volvo’s improved semi-autonomous Pilot Assist feature, which allows the S90 to accelerate, decelerate, stop, and even steer the car as long as there’s clear road markings. During our drive along some amazing Spanish roads, the S90 steered itself effortlessly for a certain length of time and should you not touch the steering wheel for a while, an alarm will remind you to take control again. Volvo brass gave information about their new Vision 2020, which states that no one in a Volvo will be seriously injured or killed by the year 2020 – that’s quite remarkable, and given the company’s track

and when in Dynamic mode, it’s like the S90 just gulped a big bottle of Red Bull. I was disheartened when I saw no paddle shifters (they aren’t even available), only Powershift. It’s a minor blow, but the S90 doesn’t want to be like the other Europeans; in fact, Volvo says that this flagship isn’t intending to compete with a BMW or Mercedes – it’s making its own path. It’s the strong silent type that wants to remain cool and collected, and not shed its tuxedo for racing gear. I found the car to be an absolute joy to drive in Spain. Volvo is staggering the release of the S90 for the Canadian market. We’ll first see the T6, both Momentum and Inscription models, in September, followed by the T8 Inscription sometime later. All Canadian models will be all-wheel drive. And sorry, for those who love diesel, Canada will also not be getting that engine either. Conclusion: Volvo is on the right track with its new vehicles and if the success of the XC90 is any indicator, the brand is looking towards a great future. I personally love the car. With a starting price of just $56,900 for the Momentum and $63,000 for the Inscription, the S90 is set to flex its muscles and take on the usual luxury suspects.

W

ith the very hot housing market in Vancouver and across the Lower Mainland, individuals are turning more towards establishing rental properties across varying neighbourhoods to earn cash flow on their properties while they let their investments increase in value. We, at Pacific Chartered Advisors LLP, find that many people who are investing in the real estate market either through individual holdings or within a corporate structure are being caught offguard by a little known technicality within the GST rebate system upon purchase of a new rental property. The issue at hand is that many investors locally are purchasing new residential properties with the intent to use as a rental property, may actually be under-paying upon finalizing the deal. The reason for this is that developers will often include a credit for a GST rebate in the final price which if the investor is buying for rental purposes they are not entitled to receive. The harm to the investor is that the CRA can assess for the inappropriately claimed new housing rebate plus interest and penalties. While many investors currently may not be faced with this problem, remember that the CRA may come back through a new housing rebate audit several years after closing. For the average real estate investor this is often an honest mistake, as normally in most sale agreements the developer usually assumes that the buyer is eligible for the housing rebate and includes the rebate in the stated purchase price. The developer will often do this as it is to their advantage as it allows 16

For purchasers who are investing in rental real estate this places them at a disadvantage. When you are buying new real estate with the intent to rent, under the Excise Tax Act of Canada (GST/HST) you are ineligible for the new housing rebate as you would not be using the property as your primary place of residence. You could qualify for the rental rebate, but unfortunately there is no ruling that allows a developer to include this credit in the final sales price as you must apply for the rebate after purchase. For you, as an individual investor, this is disadvantageous as you must pay for the property in full, separately apply for the rebate after purchase, and then wait for the application to be approved. With the CRA scrutinizing even more frequently the numerous transactions that are occurring on a daily basis, it is important that the individual investor be prepared for any potential run-ins with the GST rebate. To avoid any unnecessary penalties, the correct approach is to pay the full price plus GST on closing, separately apply to CRA for the rental rebate after purchase and wait for approval. While this approach is tedious and places more strain on your cash flow, it will also save you looking over your back and wondering if you might be subject to repaying that rebate plus interest and penalties down the road. As always, remember to consult a qualified tax professional with regards to your potential exposure.

W

hen I was asked to test drive Subaru’s 2016 down, there’s enough room for luggage, groceries, dogs or whatever Crosstrek, I literally had no idea what to your heart desires. A power sunroof is a great option to have; expect. The only thing going through my unfortunately, during my time with the Crosstrek, there was some head was, “a Subaru STi SUV? 305hp in wind buffeting in the cabin, unless the rear windows were down. One thing you’ll notice for sure is that visibility in the a crossover sounds amazing!” Crosstrek is absolutely unreal! Typical crossovers have Boy was I wrong. Needless to say, my first impression was less than spectacular, but not the case in this Subaru. A massive windshield and A pillar windows give you the impression that you’re that changed pretty quickly. Let’s start with the Interior. My first surprise was driving a glass box. And since this vehicle is made to go off-road or into the wilderness, you’ll get stunning when I sat in the driver’s seat. Subaru has come a long way from the bland and cheap interiors of the early views. On the outside, the first thing I noticed about the 2000’s. I’ve built and driven a fair number of WRX’s and Crosstrek was the brilliant Hyper Blue paint that stood STi’s in my time and had nothing but bad things to say out from a mile away. It’s probably one of my favorite about the interior quality. The Crosstrek however, was colors currently available on any vehicle, and the a pleasant surprise. The layout of the interior controls Crosstrek wears it perfectly. Sure, stitching on the steering wheel and trim to be a bit much but found the vehicle kind of looks like a lifted Impreza, but the flared black the bucket seats very comfortable and supportive. Trunk space was arches and bumpers give it a more aggressive stance. I think Subaru a little bit of a letdown. If the rear seats aren’t folded down, you’d be did a good job on the overall design of this crossover. Subaru is renowned worldwide for their amazing driveline and lucky to get 2 carryon suitcases in there. But once the rear seats are 18

all-wheel drive system. However, the Crosstrek driveline has a bit of a love-hate relationship with me. The all-wheel drive system is brilliant, period. I managed to test it on gravel roads and a few muddy hills and it didn’t miss a beat. If it’s anything like the system in the Impreza, I don’t think it’ll have any problems in BC winters, or any winters for that matter. That being said, if you need to get somewhere in a hurry, you may find yourself cursing this boxer engine. With a not-so-astounding 148hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, acceleration is the last thing on the CrossTrek’s mind. Merging onto a highway with a downhill onramp is hard enough, let alone trying to climb steep hills. I understand with fuel prices soaring and everyone trying to be eco-friendly, it’s best not to always go for high horsepower numbers. But tipping the scales at nearly 3200 lbs, the Crosstrek needs a little more oomph. I’m sure the CVT doesn’t help with acceleration, but you can be sure it helps with the fuel economy.

Now don’t get me wrong – the Crosstrek is a great commuter and crossover for the small to mid-sized family. You get Subaru dependability backed with a 3-year bumper to bumper warranty and 5-year major components warranty as standard. Rest assured that the Crosstrek will last you for years to come. That coupled with Subaru’s amazing resale value make this vehicle a great bargain; starting price is just $27, 190 for the Touring model. I came into this test drive expecting a monstrous off roader that could handle it all. But what I left with was a great crossover that excels at doing what it’s meant to. There’s a reason Subaru has been breaking sales records for the last seven years, and now I know why.

I

hadn’t been to Bravo Restaurant & Lounge in Chilliwack for a few years. I used to go quite often to celebrate my dragonboat team’s birthdays, and events and looked forward to a nice evening out. Unfortunately, what I had remembered so fondly years ago, was no longer there. My friend and I had both gone to the restaurant multiple times in the past and the only thing that was the same was the decor. We were pleased we were seated in a private booth that has curtains you can draw for privacy. But I noticed that the chandelier above our table was extremely dusty and I began worrying about dust and dirt falling in my food. The martini menu and wine list is quite extensive. This was the best part of coming. My friend enjoyed three Tequila Mockingbird martini’s which had lemon infused vodka and Quervo tequila. He had to drive, so he had to stop at three, but I’m sure he would have had more if given the chance. There are two pages of martini’’s and numerous wines from all over the world and local sources on the menu. The wine list in the past has been award winning. So if you do decide to come, bring a designated driver. For food we started by sharing the antipasto platter. I don’t think it’s very complicated to put some meat, cheese and olives on a plate, but apparently it was a difficult task at Bravo. This was by far the worst antipasto platter I have ever had anywhere! The pate tasted like it was the Freybe pepper pate from the grocery store. There was a sausage that had strong cumin in it and tasted awful. Even the crackers didn’t go well with the meats and cheeses. I opted to use some of the bread

given to get some of it down, but we left a lot on the platter and did not want to eat it anymore because it tasted atrocious! For main dishes, my friend had the halibut with potatoes and vegetables and I had a gnocchi with sundried tomato, pine nuts, peas and cream sauce. My friend was quick to point out that I was a big meat eater and requested they add some meat to my dish. Reading the ingredients I suggested to the waiter that the chef add proscuitto. The waiter returned and advised that the chef suggested adding cooked chicken breast. I was astounded! Why would anyone add chicken to this dish? I was then intrigued to see why the chef suggested it, and told the waiter to go ahead with the chicken addition. This was a big mistake! My friend ate his halibut and confirmed that the food quality had gone down substantially since our last visit. I took a bite of the chicken. It had no flavour, was over cooked, and completely devoid of any ounce of moisture. It took a few glasses of water to get it down my throat and swirled in my mouth and wouldn’t go down. It was so bad, I had it wrapped to take home and kept downing water to get the bits of disgusting dry chicken out of my teeth. Finally dessert was upon us and I remembered how Bravo was well known for its famous crème brûlée. In the past it was so popular you had to put one on hold or else they would sell out every night. We did put one on hold and that was sure an error of judgment. Bravo went from having the best crème brûlée I had ever eaten anywhere, to the second worst. The only crème brûlée worse than this one was at the Tulalip Casino in Tulalip, Washington. The Bravo crème brûlée was burnt on top and not caramelized and the crust was like rubber. It did not crack when hit by a spoon. The custard matched the venereal crust. It was disgusting! I don’t know what happened to this restaurant that I used to enjoy so much. I used to love it so much that I didn’t mind driving all the way to Chilliwack just to eat there. But whatever has happened has made Bravo a hideous disaster. Even the website Blog had not been updated since 2013 and the website menu does not match the menu in the restaurant. My friend and I believe the so called chef was in actuality “a line cook”. A chef creates, and a cook only cooks what’s put in front of them. Clearly the chicken disaster marked an inexperienced “cook” with no instinct for flavour blends and creativity. I never want to go back to Bravo again and will thrive in the glorious past memories I hold dear, which have now come to an inglorious and abrupt ending. I did manage to fix the nasty gnocchi dish when I got home. Big surprise, a bit of sautééd proscuitto really did the trick. JULY / AUGUST 2016

2016 Chevy Spark

T

he ultra-economical compact class of vehicles has some serious contenders, with many manufacturers putting out quality vehicles. The Chevy Spark, which we drove at this year’s AJAC EcoRun, is a great vehicle that starts at just $9,995. Yes, it’s on par with the Nissan Micra, a favourite of mine, but has some pretty cool features. For example, there’s standard 4G LTE wifi, 10 airbags, and some pretty funky colours to choose from. On the inside, surprisingly for such an inexpensive car, fit and finish is quite good. Interior layout and dash design is similar to other Chevy vehicles and again, practical. The Spark is also the first car in its class that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This is a fun little car that is meant for the urban commuter; it sips fuel and is a breeze to park, especially with the standard rear vision camera and available Rear Park Assist. The 1.4L engine is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission, but you could opt for a CVT; personally, go with the 5-speed because it gives more spunk.

2016 Toyota Sienna

W

hen we were on the hunt for a minivan about five years ago, our choices were narrowed down to the Honda Odyssey (which we eventually bought) and the Toyota Sienna. The Odyssey and Sienna are class leaders because they are bullet proof vehicles that do everything a family needs them to. For 2016, the Sienna is still a sharp looking minivan, both on the outside and inside. While still conservative in its looks, once you step inside the vehicle, you will be amazed at the cabin. With a spacious interior that can seat 7 or 8 passengers, comfortably I may add, the Sienna is a great vehicle for weekend family trips or those long tours to California. Although the Odyssey may be about $1000 cheaper, the Sienna has a long list of standard features that the Honda doesn’t provide: aluminum wheels, 3-zone climate control, backup camera, Touchscreen audio and Bluetooth capability are just a few. The Sienna is a pleasure to drive, and there is very little road and/or engine noise. Bottom line is that you can’t go wrong with this minivan. 24

2016 Subaru Forester

A

ccording to Subaru, the 2016 Forester was designed to put distance between itself and the competition. This compact SUV offers a great combination of all-road/all-weather capability, bulletproof reliability, top-notch safety, exceptional value and above average driving enjoyment for an AWD vehicle that starts at just $25,995. The legendary Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD is augmented here by X-Mode, a system that offers added control when conditions are at their worst. The two Subaru Boxer engines available are lightweight, responsive, fun and frugal — the Forester boasts best-in-class fuel efficiency among compact SUVs with full-time AWD. The passenger cabin is a spacious environment with excellent visibility, a long list of comfort and convenience features, and a versatile cargo compartment. Here’s a vehicle that, if you like the outdoors as much as I do, will provide years of fun and loyalty. I drove the Forester for a few days and it did everything I expected it to. No, it’s not a WRX, but you’re getting fantastic quality from a manufacturer that excels in Rally races. It was also Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year in 2014.

2016 Acura RL-X Sport Hybrid SH-AWD

T

his has got to be one of the most underrated cars I’ve ever driven. Acura’s flagship offers luxury and performance for those who don’t want a German brand, but still want the build, quality, and longevity they come to expect from the Japanese carmaker. The biggest shortcoming of the RL-X has to be its conservative styling – I just don’t think younger buyers will even give this car a look when there are much better-looking options out there. But since beauty is only skin deep, once you get past that, this car is utterly amazing. The cabin is top-notch and rivals the luxury European brands, with tonnes of technology and gadgets. The electronic gear selector was hit and miss with my family; I didn’t care for it much but my wife liked it. The RL-X Sport Hybrid has a 3-motor hybrid powertrain: front electric motor and rear twin motors that combine for 377 total horsepower. Combined with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters, this car gets going pretty fast. Take my word and drive the car because it is quite the surprise. I liked it a lot.

Chevrolet Equinox -- do. If the Edge feels heavy (its curb weight is actually quite average for the class) that sensation also contributes to the car’s solid over-the-road feel. The suspension strikes a good balance between controlling body motion over rough pavement and isolating those inside from the worst of it. Along with that well-planted driving feel comes handling just a touch sharper than most other cars in this class. That’s a good fit, but the steering is not: in a sports car, we’d praise this kind of immediate turn-in, but it makes the Edge feel jumpy and requires frequent course corrections in highway driving. Edge’s 2015 redesign brought a new interior that thankfully did away with the touch-sensitive controls that dominated the centre stack following a 2011 refresh. Now there are hard buttons on the stack for most climate functions and basic sound system controls. The touchscreen provides access to the much-improved third-generation of Ford’s SYNC infotainment setup, and includes redundant climate controls. Driver and front passenger get comfortable seats and decent space, but an optional panoramic sunroof included in our tester steals a lot of headroom from rear seat riders. Another option -inflatable rear seatbelts -- proved frustrating, with a unique buckle design that was reluctant to fasten for one friend who came along for a ride. There are a number of nice touches in here, including loads of small-item storage in bins on top of the centre stack and behind it, along with the usual spots in front of the shifter and under the central armrest. At the time of writing, Titanium models carry a $41,899 starting price and come standard with handy technology

such as hands-free power tailgate, intelligent keyless entry, front park assist, backup camera, and SYNC, plus niceties like leather seats, ambient lighting, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Our tester had more than $8,200 worth of options including heated rear seats and steering wheel, ventilated front seats, 180-degree front camera, and adaptive cruise control, as well as the previously-mentioned sunroof and inflatable rear seatbelts. One feature conspicuous by its absence from the Edge’s option list is autonomous emergency braking, an item bundled with adaptive cruise control in some of the Edge’s competitors. The result is a $50,000-plus Ford Edge that rings in $5,000 pricier than a similarly-equipped Hyundai Santa Fe (also powered by a 2.0L turbo engine), and about $4,000 more than a top-trim Kia Sorento, which gets a strong, smooth V6 and more interior space. Ford’s upscale Lincoln brand offers the MKX, which shares the Edge’s basic underpinnings and comes standard with a 3.7L engine not offered in the Ford, for a little more than $46,000 to start, though it can be optioned to well over $60,000. If the Edge is a bit expensive for its class, it mostly feels worthy of that extra cash, thanks to a well-finished interior and its nice driving feel. But as much as we like saving fuel, we’d skip a few of the upscale options in our test vehicle in favour of spending that $500 to get the V6 engine. It’s a better fit here, giving the Edge performance that’s in keeping with the vehicle’s overall feel and helping it stand up better against this car’s highquality competition. Ironically, the very first Edge came standard with a 3.5L V6. Add that to the list of things Ford got. right the first time around.

I

mpaired driving is the leading cause of automotive related deaths in Canada. In 2010 alone, 1082 deaths were a result of impaired driving, with nearly half of the total amount of fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents that year. This number is expected to be higher as it does not include individuals killed in impaired crashes in boats, trains, aircraft and industrial vehicles as well as non-fatal injuries as a result of impaired driving. But what exactly counts as impaired driving? Generally, when most people think of impaired driving, they think of drinking and driving. However, impaired driving is the act of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, whether prescribed or illegal. Alcohol affects multiple portions of the brain which results in poor judgement, balance, and coordination. However, the main reason

why drinking and driving is so dangerous is because it slows down the brains reaction to stimuli, thus taking it longer for you to react to hazards on the road. Alcohol affects neurotransmitters, chemical messengers that transmit signals which control thought processes, behavior, and emotion; limiting their activity causing sluggish movement and slurred speech, and slower reaction time. This reduced brain activity is the main danger of alcohol. Difficulty concentrating, performing multiple tasks at once (e.g. keep in the lane and in the right direction, while concentrating on other traffic) and understanding sensory information are all effects of lowered brain function as a result of alcohol. The most dangerous effect from this lowered brain activity is feeling tired, which may cause a driver to fall asleep at the wheel. Whether or not it is safe to drive depends on your blood alcohol level (BAC); the maximum legal limit in Canada is 0.08. However a BAC of 0.05 has been shown to 30

affect an individual’s vision, sensitivity to brightness, depth and motion perception, and drivers with a BAC of above 0.05 and lower than 0.08 are 7.2 times as likely to be in a fatal collision. A study performed by the Ontario ministry of Transportation has shown that the amount a person can drink varies depending on their weight, body fat, amount of food consumed, mood, and more. Because of this, it is very difficult to measure your own BAC, and even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive. That being said, the best solution is, if you plan on drinking, plan not to drive. Drugs have varying effects depending on the substance consumed. Medicinal marijuana, for instance, has similar effects to alcohol on the brain. There is difficulty in concentration, depth perception, reduced reaction time, poor speed control, and the inability to read signs. Certain painkillers on the other hand, have

very limited but equally dangerous side effects. These painkillers are opioids, either natural or synthetic derivations of opium (e.g. morphine, demerol). Opioids depress the central nervous system as well as the brain; this causes you to forget about pain and may result in drifting in and out of a light sleep. Even prescription drugs can have an effect on your driving ability. Prescription drugs commonly cause sleepiness, blurred vision or dizziness. The best ways to minimize the negative effect on your driving ability is to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the side effects of any medication and try to adjust the timing of when you take the medication so as not to conflict with then you need to get behind the wheel. Any drug that affects your senses can have a negative impact on your driving ability, and care should always be taken when considering getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.

think radar detectors are a useful tool for the enthusiast driver or for someone who commutes a lot on the highway. Notice I said tool and not guarantee. These types of products will only work in situations where law enforcement’s equipment is turned on. Radar detectors help keep your driving record clean, because let’s be honest, sometimes we like to do some spirited driving. There are some roads where the speed limit isn’t updated and it’s very easy to go over the posted limit. If you are the owner of a sports car, I’m not endorsing reckless driving behaviour, but with some of these high power to weight ratio vehicles, going over the posted limit is pretty easy (even if it’s for a brief moment). This is the type of product that is nice to have to help keep one in check. Radar detectors should be used as a tool to know when your speed is being measured by law enforcement. If you do get a ticket and your radar detector did not activate, you’ll still have to go to traffic court to plead your case, but you will have more ammunition for your case. You can ask for documentation of your speeding infraction and there will be a very good chance the officer won’t be able to produce the evidence because you already knew they didn’t use the proper equipment to assess your speed at the given time. Now my pet peeve is seeing $70,000+ sports cars with a radar detector suctioned cupped to the windshield and a long cord just lying on the dash which typically gets in the way of the controls of the head unit. It really takes away from these beautifully designed interiors seeing a wiring dangling from the windshield. There are a variety of solutions when it comes to product and installation methods to help maximize performance and aesthetics of your radar detector and interior style. Built in radar detectors from such manufacturers like Escort and K40 are the most effective and most expensive type of product for this category. They come with one or multiple sensors to sense radar and laser and are mounted externally to maximize effectiveness (some windshields may affect performance of windshield mounted detectors). This will require some disassembly of exterior parts like bumper shells to mount the sensors and run the wiring seamlessly through the vehicle. They will also come with 34

Radar Detectors a speaker, control display and GPS antenna (depending on make and model) that will all have to be mounted and installed in the vehicle. These types of units should really be installed by a professional that way things like the display can be custom mounted into the vehicle for that stealthy “James Bond” look. Another new way of integrating a radar detector into the vehicle, is using the head unit as the display. K40 and Kenwood have partnered up allowing certain Kenwood head units to interface with certain K40 radar detectors through an iDatalink integration module giving the information on the Kenwood head unit. This gives an incredibly stealth look because there is no direct visible evidence of a radar detector installed in the vehicle at all. For people that want to be able to use their radar detector in multiple vehicles or do not need the extravagant installation but still want most of the performance, plug and play units are the way to go. You can still purchase units that have GPS capabilities so they can log areas that are constant false alarms, that way when you get a warning it is most likely something actually tracking your speed. There are also products from companies like Blendmount that are designed for specific vehicles to allow you to mount the radar detector to your mirror making it look more like it’s supposed to be there rather than an eye soar. You can also purchase hardwire kits or have your local installer modify and hardwire the charging adapter to the vehicle and hide most of the wiring for the plug and play unit cleaning up the interior of your vehicle. F

or decades, the topic of steroids in sports has been questioned time and time again. It seems as though every year a new team, athlete or event is challenged with facing the suggested usage of banned substances in their sport. With that said, as a bodybuilder and active member of the bodybuilding community, I have seen firsthand the stigma of steroids. Often, it comes in the form of an unquestioned belief that “everyone” in bodybuilding is on steroids. This simply is not true. I’m not saying that steroids and other performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) don’t exist in sport – they do, and have been used by athletes since Ancient Greece; however, it is important to recognize that not ALL athletes use drugs! In fact, steroid use will probably always be questioned, and athletes will likely always be tested. Regardless of efforts to control doping, in the highest level of sport, there

continues to be examples where the drug ‘ball has been dropped’. On one hand, there are cases where doped athletes are “over-looked” by officials, and on the other hand, without neutral verbiage athletes who do not use steroids Dawn Thornton are automatically assumed to be ‘juiced’. My experience with banned substances is a small part of this article - my insight is purely from experience and I will note in advance that I am not encouraging the usage of any banned substance. Rather, I am presenting informative with the goal of educating others. Banned substances are not limited to the market of steroids and gym dealers. To be fully informed about PED’s (as one should always be when competing at any level - Natural or Open) there are numerous herbal ingredients, and nutraceuticals that are deemed “banned in sport” by the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA). Beyond the realm of banned substances that are legal, there are also “black” market substances, which are commonly associated as AAS, or anabolic-androgenic steroids. These are a classification of drugs that can be used to alter and change the body’s natural hormonal state. Specifically, they are a synthetic version of the male sex hormone testosterone. Do they work? Simply put, YES. Are they good for you? This depends on many things. These compounds are taken extremely serious in the medical world and are used cautiously only in cases where they are required, such as if a deficiency is present, and for muscle wasting diseases. One cannot simply just walk in a doctor’s office and ask for a prescription of AAS for the purpose of getting bigger, leaner and adding a few trophies to his/her shelf. As a result, people pursue AAS without physician assistance, and in doing so, they are taking numerous risks. Taking risks with your health, legally and morally is a very personal decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly! The key to success, physically and mentally in life, I believe stems from the pursuit of knowledge and experience. This unquestionably is a required aspect of maintaining success in anything. Do your part and acquire knowledge in order to educate yourself. I often tell people that once you start down the AAS path, you are on that path, and as is the case with any drug,


The “S” Word you must know the risks. Seeing newly acquired strength, size, and energy, the aggressiveness and vigor becomes addictive, and the ‘need’ to see constant changes can lead to abuse. This truth comes from my own personal experience - the constant desire to be ‘better’ pushed me to use banned substances after beginning to compete as a natural athlete who was fully compliant to the rules of doping control. Entering the “big kids” pool and competing at a higher level had me constantly questioning my genetics, my training, and my efforts. The outcome of using banned substances served their purpose at that time, but looking back now and being “clean”, many questions linger. Could I have succeed at my sport and acquired what I was so desperately seeking? YES, if I would have given myself more time and been more consistent then I already was. After 20 years of training and 20 years in the nutraceutical industry, I had all the tools that I needed in my shed. Do I have regrets? Not one. I learned, experienced and

I’m surrounded on all sides by rolling, lush green hills and mountains and just beyond, snow-capped peaks that make me grin. I attempt to take a deep breath of fresh Aspen air, but am instead met with the feeling of constricted lungs and light-headedness. The reality of living at altitude just doesn’t match up to the dream-like illusion, that’s for sure. In life, expectations often don’t add up to realities. Be it in your relationships, career, activity choice or even an online purchase you thought would fit you perfectly… Reality can be harsh. Then there are those moments when expectations are unusually low -- those moments you go in thinking something is a bad idea or just not going to work out -- and yet when the reality sets it in goes so above and beyond what you originally expected you’re not only presently surprised, you’re legitimately impressed. While I was not at all impressed by my lightheadedness due to lack of oxygen for three days straight, I was above-and-beyond surprised by the allnew 2017 Jaguar F-Pace; the British company’s first foray into the luxury crossover market. Expectation So, a manufacturer that’s known for its dynamic and stylish sports cars decides to embark upon a segment in the market that’s so far from weekend track days and time attack runs it’s not even funny; sounds familiar, no? See, Porsche did it nearly 15 years ago when they first introduced the Cayenne sports utility vehicle. The entire auto industry and customers alike threw their arms up in disbelief: How could a company so steeped in sport and performance drive cars suddenly swing in entirely the opposite direction and hope to succeed? And yet they did, and immensely so. The Cayenne continues to be one of Porsche’s bestselling models. And they did it again with their all-new luxury crossover the Macan. But this isn’t about Porsche (thought I believe the Macan plays an important role here so it will make another appearance later on in the article…). 38

Back to the manufacturer at hand: Jaguar. Here’s a historically performance and luxury car driven company suddenly jumping onto the literally-on-fire-it’s-so-hot bandwagon of CUVs. My expectations for the F-PACE were low from the very beginning. Sure it was supposed to be based on the CX-17 concept that looked stellar in pictures and in theory, but really; Jaguar making a CUV? It’s not that I didn’t think Jaguar capable; I assumed they’d pilfer bits and pieces from Land Rover Range Rover, stick a Jaguar design atop said chassis and call it an all-terrain Big Cat. Reality The reality of it though is that Jaguar didn’t steal anything at all from their all-terrain SUV division. In fact, the Jaguar F-PACE is based on the same platform as the XF and all-new XE. While the front axle weight is heavier in the F-PACE (for off-roading purposes) the three vehicles are nearly identical in their chassis and suspension set-up. And it works well. Really, really well. What they did steal was that signature front grille that both the XF and new XE sport. While slightly beefier and decidedly more muscular, the F-PACE wears its family resemblance with grace and

style. There’s nothing bloated or oversized about the crossover’s look in comparison with its sedan brethren, and that’s just fantastic. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Jaguar is on its design A-game right now. They have the most stunning lineup up vehicles at the moment; starting with the smoldering F-TYPE, course. But there are bits of the sultry F-TYPE in the F-Pace. No, seriously, there are. Look at the rear. Notice anything similar? Those taillights weren’t pulled from the thin mountain air in Denver; nope they’re lifted straight from the sumptuous rear of Jag’s premium sports car. And they look fantastic resting on the rump of the F-PACE. It’s also no coincidence that the F-PACE sports the “F” in its name; alluding to its connection to the performance-driven machine it shares a stable with. Now, while the F-PACE was originally borne of the C-X17 concept vehicle, it derives its name from Jaguar’s longstanding motto of “grace, space and pace.” It checks all those boxes easily. When reality exceeds expectation Let’s start with some numbers, shall we? To start, two versions of the 2017 Jaguar F-PACE will make it to Canadian soil, both featuring the same 3.0L V6 supercharged engine. Later on we’ll see a 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel, but that’s a topic for another review). For the base 35t model said V6 engine produces 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Jump to the F-PACE S and that same engine was tweaked by clever Jaguar engineers to spin out 380 ponies. What’s really impressive here is the tenacity with which this high-

sitting (the F-PACE features 8.4” of ground clearance, by the way), all-wheel drive luxury crossover clings to the road’s surface, no matter how savagely you throw it round the corners. Feeling light and nimble on its wheels, the F-PACE traversed some fairly intense and winding mountain passes across the “Top of the Rockies” that reaches an elevation of just over 12,000ft. As breathless as the thin air up there made me feel, I kind of felt like it had to do with the exhilarating ride, as well. I’d say that level of handling found in the F-PACE Is thanks to its shared platform with the XE sedan that features the same automatic damping control and torque vectoring that ensures the F-PACE stays squarely on course, regardless of the twisties. And trust me, I tried. Steering is weighted in all the right way, and I may have found a new favourite steering wheel in the industry. Chubby and well designed, the 2017 F-PACE steering wheel is a joy to manipulate and hold on to, and movements don’t need to be exaggerated in order to point the vehicle where you want it to go. Of course, in typical Jaguar fashion, you can choose between Dynamic, Normal, and Snow/Gravel terrain settings via buttons in the centre stack by the pop-up lever knob (also a known Jaguar feature). You’ll recognize other features in the Jaguar F-PACE that are directly in line with the rest of the Big Cat family, such as gauge cluster that’s fully digital in the F-PACE S. Seating is luxurious and leather, and subtle design touches like available Houndstooth door inserts keep this Brit as classy as you’d expect. JULY / AUGUST 2016

While I was never a fan of the old onboard entertainment system, they blissfully updated it once again for this new CUV. Featuring a 10.2” coloured touchscreen, the F-PACE is equipped with the latest InTouch Control Pro system that’s a joy to use. There is a smaller InTouch Control (non Pro) available as well, but it’s slightly slower and not as intuitive. But this is more than just a jacked up Jaguar, right? This is supposed to be a capable crossover. So, is it? You’ll never off-road you, but you could One of the Jaguar F-PACE’s selling points is that it’s built for an active lifestyle, which means more than rushing off to the local Starbucks then Timmy’s soccer practice and back home in time for Game of Thrones. No, they mean if you like hiking, kayaking, wakeboarding, sky diving…. That sort of stuff. So, if those things float your boat then the 2017 Jaguar F-PACE is for you! How so you might ask? Well, we took the F-PACE through its paces (see what I did there?) up the side of a rather steep and muddy hill then through a grassy, rough field

that made me feel as if I should stop in the middle, spread my arms out and beginning screeching “The hills are alive with the sound of music…” but much to my drive partner’s delight, I did not… All that to say, the ride height and AWD capabilities of the F-PACE mean it is a viable “off-roader” that will keep you comfortably safe and secure in the winter months in the city. However, there’s more. For the first time, Jaguar is offering something they call the “Activity Key.” I was skeptical at first, but just hear me out. This key replaces your key fob. That’s right. And it’s not really a key at all, it looks very much like a FitBit and is worn on your wrist, secure. So, you leave your key fob in your F-PACE, gather your outdoorsy gear, close the trunk on your 949 litres of cargo space (that’s almost 450 litres more than the Macan by the way…), touch the Activity Key to the “J” in Jaguar across the rear et voila! Doors locked and key fob left inside the car completely useless. So, even if someone did smash your window and find the fob they wouldn’t be able to steal your F-PACE. Clever, no? Completely waterproof (I know, I fished mine out of a river before hiking to the F-PACE it was associated with to drive myself back to the hotel) and comfortable to wear, the Activity Key is just a few hundred bucks as an option and as a runner who hates running with key fobs for fear it’ll pop out of my pocket as I bounce along, I

say it’s well worth it just for that peace of mind alone. Reality check All right, so have Jaguar really done it here? Have they successfully broken into a new segment after so many decades of being a sports car manufacturer? I truly believe they have. The 2017 F-PACE will be an extremely important product for Jaguar going forward, and I feel it will change the face of not only the company but the average Jaguar buyer, as well. With a starting price of $53,900 for the base 35t, I’d recommend stepping up to the F-PACE S for $66,500 (starting) in order to reap the rewards of upgraded interior materials and the larger InTouch Control Pro system. And people will upgrade to that trim level. And they will buy this vehicle, that’s the shocking reality here after such low expectations. The 2017 Jaguar F-PACE truly took my breath away, and I promise it wasn’t just the Aspen air. 40

Toyota Adds Child Models to Virtual Crash Dummy Line-up

T

oyota Motor Corporation has added three new models to represent children aged ten, six, and three to Version 4 of its Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) virtual crash dummy software. THUMS allows injuries sustained by human bodies during vehicle crashes to be simulated on computer, and sales of the new models will begin from this autumn. THUMS is able to forecast the extent of injuries sustained throughout the human body, and thus, is utilized in the technological development of passenger protection devices such as airbags, and to contribute to improved vehicle safety performance. THUMS is also increasingly being used in the field of motorsports. For example, it has been used by NASCAR (the U.S.-based National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) to formulate regulations for seat shapes that are better able to reduce the likelihood of rib fractures sustained in drivers as a result of racing accidents. The ten-year old (138cm tall), six-year old (118cm tall) and three-year old (94cm tall) additions to THUMS Version 4 represent the average physiques of children at each respective age. As with the large male (189cm tall), average-build adult male (179cm tall), and small female (153cm tall) models that are already being sold, the new models will come in two versions -- a passenger version and a pedestrian version -- for a total of six new additions to the THUMS line-up. This expanded line-up takes into consideration the influence of age and physique, and allows for a more thorough injury analysis.

Ever since THUMS Version 1 was launched in the year 2000, continued improvements and refinements have been made to the software. For Version 2, which was released in 2003, faces and bone structure were added to the models. Version 3, launched in 2008, added a brain simulation and in 2010, Version 4 was upgraded with detailed modeling of the brain and also the addition of internal organs and their placement and interaction within the body. In 2015, Version 5 added simulated musculature, allowing the models to assume the same bracing positions that a human might just before a crash. The newly launched child-spec models were created as a result of collaborative research between Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, and the Collaborative Safety Research Center* located in the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. THUMS is available for purchase through the Tokyo-based JSOL Corporation and ESI Japan . THUMS is used for a wide variety of purposes by automobile manufacturers, parts manufacturers, and universities both in Japan and overseas. It contributes to research on safety technologies not just at Toyota, but also by organizations all over the world. The ultimate desire of a mobile society is to advance towards the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries. Going forward, Toyota will utilize THUMS to analyze the injuries sustained by both passengers and pedestrians during collisions with and between vehicles, and to further research and improve safety technologies of all kinds.

I

t’s an award you don’t really don’t brag about, yet at the same time, it’s an award that makes quite an impact, especially on your wallet. Most of us journalists love to drive high output, octane hungry vehicles because, come on, they’re just fun! While putting the pedal to the metal creates ear-to-ear smiles on many drivers’ faces, it does little to help those fuel efficiency numbers. Aaahh…yes, those numbers that we all care about in principle, but do little to follow in reality. And this holds especially true for me; during my younger years, I drove

taxi to help pay for university costs. While not as extreme as New York taxi drivers, I still picked up the nasty habit of driving fast, which had stuck with me, until now. At this year’s AJAC EcoRun Challenge, yours truly won second place – yep, a podium finish for a rookie; and an unlikely title for a driver like me. For the past 5 years, AJAC has held its annual EcoRun challenge, an event that tests the fuel efficiency ratings of many vehicles in real life situations. For 2016, our test fleet of 27 vehicles included everything from the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf to the Porsche 911 Carrera and Chevrolet Colorado. In fact, there was even the oneof-a-kind Toyota Mirai. So yes, we did test vehicles that an average Canadian would own and drive on a regular basis. EcoRun 2016 had a spectacular planned route from Toronto to Ottawa, with various destination hosts along the way. Over a span of two days, each journalist drove one of eight assigned cars through city, suburban and highway legs. Here are some of my personal highlights during this trek. Evergreen Brickworks (Toronto, Ontario) 42

The first leg took us on the 401 – not a great driving experience due to tonnes of traffic, but the destination was spectacular. Evergreen Brickworks was a brick-making plant that has been transformed into a modern environmental centre, which now has facilities for children to learn about the environment and space that caters to weddings, just to name a few. I was driving the Mazda MX-5 and got amazing fuel economy – I’m was off to a good start. University of Toronto Institute of Technology With empty stomachs and full bladders, most of us were eager to get here. The UTIT houses one of the world’s largest wind tunnels, which is used to test drag in vehicles. The facility also demonstrated some great technology that tests vibrations by mimicking various road conditions. This time, I was driving the Lexus CT200h and once again, was well under the manufacturer specs for fuel economy. Cobourg A beautiful place to stop, recharge some of the vehicles, and enjoy some ice cream. The EcoRun vehicles were staged on the pier and the backdrop of Lake Ontario provided for some great

photography. This time I was driving the Kia Optima and wow, did I smoke the manufacturer numbers for fuel efficiency. Belleville and the Mustang Drive-in After driving on some great scenic roads, we ended up at the hotel where we were scheduled to spend the night. As a bonus, there was dinner and a movie at the Mustang Drive-in. Fresh made chicken sandwiches, drinks sans-alcohol, and great conversations. Then, got into the Chevy Cruze and watched Captain America: Civil War.


2016 AJAC Eco Run Kingston For this leg, I was driving the Toyota Prius and this car just oozes fuel efficiency, even with A/C on. We had a tour of Canada’s Penitentiary Museum, where not only did I see some spectacular history, but also picked up a souvenir for my one-year old daughter.

Brockville A great spot for a break, some food, and recharge the cars’ batteries. The day was getting quite warm, so it was nice to grab some cold soft drinks and enjoy discussing our efficiency ratings. I found out that my driving efficiency was quite good again, with the Honda Civic giving some great numbers. Ottawa For the last leg, I was driving the award winning Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid. This leg was mostly highway driving, and the Volvo performed quite well for a large vehicle; yet, had the battery been charged fully, my numbers would have been even better. We ended at City Hall in Ottawa where all cars were staged and the final press conference took place. Results and Conclusions AJAC’s EcoRun 2016 once again proved that vehicles, including big trucks and sports car, of today can be fuel efficient, if driven properly. Now, I know that anyone buying a Porsche doesn’t really care about pesky fuel efficiency numbers, but what was amazing was that even this 370 horsepower sports car gave an average 6.3L/100 km – for most of us, that’s hybrid vehicle territory. Every journalist at this year’s EcoRun was told specifically not to hypermile – no following a transport truck, driving well under the speed limit, or cutting off the

engine during downhills – to simulate real life conditions. In the end, 100% of journalists beat the manufacturers’ ratings for fuel efficiency. That’s quite impressive! When it was announced that I placed second, Jenn McCarthy said to me, “I thought you had a lead foot!” Well, normally I did; but EcoRun 2016 did something that I probably wouldn’t have done on my own. In the race for the coveted “Green Jersey”, I transformed into a better, greener driver. And what’s shocking to me, and my family even more, is that ever since the EcoRun 2016 “race”, I’ve become a more fuel-efficient driver in everyday life as well. Huh… who would have thought?

So yes, driving habits have a HUGE impact on the fuel efficiency, and probably the life, of your automobile. Here are some general tips to keep in mind: 1. When leaving from a stop, accelerate slowly rather than putting the pedal to the metal. 2. Anticipate traffic – if you see vehicles slowing down, let your car coast slowly rather than hitting the brakes hard. 3. Follow speed limits – these are not only designed to keep you safe, but keep fuel efficiency numbers in the green zone. 4. Don’t carry unnecessary cargo in the trunk – do you walk around with extra weight strapped to you? No, because it will slow you down and tire you out faster. Same concept with the car. Don’t keep your car’s trunk loaded with stuff. 5. Keep the tires inflated to proper manufacturer specs. I had a great time at this year’s EcoRun and look forward to next year, where I’ll be on the hunt for the Green Jersey once again. Jim Kenzie, you better be ready.
