DRK Editorial

“It is not the honor that you take with you, but the heritage you leave behind.” - Branch Rickey In today’s world, everyone is working hard to make something for themselves, whether it be fame, fortune, a home, or a family. What is important for one person may not be for someone else. Rickey’s quote teaches us something very important and that is to leave some sort of legacy behind for others to follow and to strive for. In the automotive and motorcycle world, two names that come to mind with respect to heritage and legacy are Aston Martin and Harley Davidson, iconic companies that have a proud history of over 100 years. Both Aston and Harley started out as dreams to develop products that implied perfection. In this issue, we have included reviews of the new Aston Martin Vanquish Volante and Harley Davidson Street Glide Special, machines that are the epitome of a proud pedigree. Not to be left behind, the Honda name has been associated with quality products, and we look at the Honda Pilot, a great SUV and family hauler that has been a favourite since its launch. Leaving a legacy also means being responsible and one of our science professionals discusses what constitutes impairment. Too many people drive or ride when they are over the legal Blood Alcohol Limit and this puts innocent people at risk. Our technical guru will provide readers with information about the new Android Auto ecosystem and his top picks in our Gadgets & Gears section. One of our new contributing writers talks about architectural design, whether it be automotive or home. And as always, make sure you check out the Latest Buzz, Quick Looks, Classic Car, and of course, our DRK/DRQ of the month. In today’s high paced world, most everyone is focused on becoming successful. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that, but what’s more important is being socially responsible – only then will you leave behind a legacy that others can look up to. We hope you enjoy this issue of DRK Magazine and as always, we value your feedback.

BMW Building $1 billion Factory in Mexico

Latest

Buzz J U LY 2 014

Harley Rolls Out First Electric Motorcycle

BMW announced that it will spend $1 billion to build a new luxury car factory in northern Mexico by 2019. The factory, which will be located in the northern state of San Luis Potosi, will have the capacity to make 150,000 cars in a year and will employ 1,500 people. The luxury car maker already has 28 factories in 13 countries. This announcement was made after Daimler and Renault-Nissan said they would spend $1.6 billion on a factory in Mexico to make premium compact cars for Infiniti and Mercedes.

Car Shoppers going Online According to new statistics, more and more car buyers are finding great deals by shopping on the Internet. Compared to just four years ago, there has been about a 20% increase in people doing research online prior to going to a dealership. Not surprising, more and more car dealerships are employing Internet Sales Managers who deal strictly with the new and evolving market.

Tolls for Golden Ears Bridge to Rise Translink announced that tolls on the money-strapped Golden Ears Bridge will increase by 1.5% in July in order to keep up with inflation. Thus, the “pay as you go” fare will increase from $4.25 to $4.30 per trip. Local Fraser Valley mayors have complained that drivers in their communities are being unfairly gouged because of the tolls. Good news for motorcycle riders though – there is no increase for you!

Can you think of a Harley without its shaking handlebars and loud exhausts? Well, motorcycle enthusiasts had the chance to see Harley’s first electric motorcycle in New York and rather than rumbling, it sounded like a jet taking off. These hand-built demo models were quite an attraction at this VIP event, with most guests liking the futuristic design. Although not in production, Harley is still working on increasing the range of the electric bike, which currently can only travel about 200 km on single charge. That being said, the demo model rocketed from 0 – 60 mph in under 4 seconds.

Women Real Drivers When Buying Cars It’s an obvious fact that women make most of the key purchasing decisions, but now, it applies to buying cars as well. While vehicles are traditionally thought to be male-dominated purchases, new data shows that women buy more than half of the new cars and influence 80% of all car purchases. Unlike men, women still purchase vehicles that are more practical, budget-friendly, and have more space. As a result, car manufacturers are now adjusting their marketing techniques for this change in the buyer group. July 2014

Don’t Ride your BMW R1200RT! BMW Motorrad Canada has advised owners of the new 2014 R1200RT to not ride their motorcycles until further notice. This precaution is being taken because of a potential defect in the rear spring strut. Although no injuries have been reported, there is a chance that the piston rod of the rear strut can fail. The company is contacting owners of the 202 affected units in Canada and letting them know that a technical campaign is underway to replace the affected part.

Motorcyclist, 16, Killed in Hit and Run A 16-year old motorcyclist was killed in a hit and run in Surrey, near 96 Avenue and 123A Street. According to witnesses, a silver Honda Accord traveling eastbound on 96 Ave turned in front of the motorcyclist, who was traveling westbound. Rather than stopping, the driver of the Honda Accord drove for a block, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Police dogs were used to track the Honda driver, but no suspect was found. Anyone with information about this collision is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Hennessey Venom GT beats Veyron Super Sport

In February, the 1,244 horsepower Hennessey Venom GT set the record for fastest production car in the world, after achieving a top speed of 435.31 km/h. Previously, the record was set by the Bugatti Veyron, which attained a top speed of 430 km/h. The run was done at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and saw the Venom beat the Veyron Super Sport by a very narrow margin. However, due to a couple of reasons, the Venom GT did not make the Guinness Book of World Records. First, the Venom only completed one run, whereas two runs in opposite directions are required, with the average speed of both runs taken. Second, there must be a minimum of 30 production cars produced, and the Venom GT was one car short at 29. Hennessey says the car was still accelerating and could achieve an even higher top speed, but the driver had run out of runway.

Mazda6 Wins AJAC’s Top Award

Volkswagen Pickup Could Come to North America

There are rumours that Volkswagen is considering bringing the pickup back to the North American market. Not since the 1980’s has Volkswagen entered this market. In 2009, the auto maker launched the Amarok pickup in other parts of the world, where it has continued to sell well. It’s not sure whether a North American version would be upsized, but just the thought of having a Volkswagen back in our territory is enough to excite buyers. 8

July 2014

The 2014 Mazda6 has won the coveted AJAC Canadian Car of the Year Award. It had previously won the Best New Family Car over $30,000. Mazda should be proud of this award as it is based on the opinions of over 80 top Canadian journalists and is judged based on a number of qualities, such as design and styling, value, fuel economy, comfort, carbon footprint, and power. The Mazda6 has been a good seller, although not as much as its younger sibling, the Mazda3. However, having been completely redesigned for 2014, it’s little wonder why it was crowned with the top award for this year.

Keep Your Pets Safe With the warmer weather at hand, Vancouver police and the SPCA are urging drivers to mind to their pets when they are left in the car. On a hot day, the temperature inside of a car, with its windows closed, can rise by over 20 degrees, creating a hazardous situation for pets. Some of you will remember that a couple of months ago, 6 dogs died when their dog walker had left them in the back of a vehicle during a hot day. If you must leave your pet in the car, make sure the windows are at least a few inches open AND make sure you return quickly.

Tundra with new Cummins Rumours are that the next generation Toyota Tundra could be fitted with a turbodiesel V8 Cummins engine. A similar version could be found in the Titan as well. The new motor is expected to have more than 300 horsepower and over 500 ft-lbs of torque.

Arai introduces innovative Pro Shade System Arai Helmet, Inc., makers of world class, handmade helmets for more than six decades, is excited to announce the all-new Pro Shade System, an innovative, easy-to-use visor accessory that will benefit street riders of all disciplines, from commuters to long-distance tourers. Replacing the face shield of any current Arai full-face helmet that uses the SAI-type shield system, the Pro Shade System installs in seconds and offers a multitude of benefits. When raised, the Pro Shade’s visor acts a translucent peak, minimizing overhead glare. By lowering the shield, the rider can reduce the amount of direct light entering the helmet, which is particularly beneficial when the sun is lower in the sky. The Pro Shade System can be quickly and easily raised or lowered by hand, offering riders the chance to block glare as needed, depending on riding conditions.

2014 Harley Street Glide Special

A

s many of you know, I’ve been riding my share of motorcycles for the past twenty years, ranging from cruisers to track-ready supersports. My last few bikes have been supersports, but I have to be honest – after riding the new 2014 Street Glide Special for a week, I’m tempted to put away my racing leathers and maybe settle for a more relaxed ride. My test bagger, complete with Stage 1 upgrade and Rinehart Racing pipes, was supplied by Barnes Harley Davidson in Langley, BC.

2014 Harley Street Glide Special

Contemporary heritage

The Street Glide has been Harley’s perennial best seller for years and according to HD’s President Matt Levatich, “[They] took every dimension of a great motorcycle and made it better.” Levatich is referring to Project Rushmore, which in essence, is a mountain of upgrades and modifications made to 2014 models. Some of the major upgrades include the High Output Twin Cam 103 engine, a highly sophisticated linked ABS system, new adjustable suspension, a new 49 mm fork, an amazing new Infotainment system, and a makeover of the fenders, fairings, and luggage systems. The beauty of Project Rushmore is that the bagger is still recognizable as a pure Harley, but now, it’s packed with modern technology, which makes it just that much better. Coming off of a 750cc supersport, the Harley Davidson is a big big motorcycle – it’s wide, long, and heavy. Initially, I was a little hesitant because the bike was brand new; the Vivid Black paint shining and the chrome gleaming in the sunlight. The Batwing fairing, first introduced in 1969, is menacing and 12

July 2014

now features an extended brow and forward vent, characteristic of a Rushmore model. The functional splitstream vent now should do a much better job of buffeting the wind, which was a complaint by most FL riders. At the rear of the bike, the saddlebags are sleeker and now feature a one-touch operation, which makes loading and unloading things a breeze. As I fired up the bike, the Rinehart Racing pipes made their presence felt. As I mentioned in another article, I’m a huge proponent of aftermarket pipes – it’s not to suggest that I encourage noise pollution, but rather, louder pipes make you “seen” on the street more-so than stock pipes. With the bike at idle, there is the traditional shake, but come on, it’s a Harley right. After making sure the mirrors were set, I put the bike into gear, said goodbye to the Harley dealership, and set off. My first day consisted of local riding, just to get the feel of the Street Glide Special. For being such big bike, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to ride, especially with it being almost twice the weight of a supersport bike. The bike

is very smooth and there was no shake at all, with even the mirrors providing clear images of what was beside and behind me. My tester was also fitted with full-length footboards and a toe-heel shifter, and after a while, I found it easier to shift as compared to the normal single lever shifter. For some reason, the heel-toe shifter took me back to the days of watching Officers “Ponch” and “Baker” on the TV series CHiPS in the 80’s. Hmm…that’s going back quite a bit. Anyhow, as evening approached, I pulled into my driveway, my two daughters jumping with the joy that dad had bought a new motorcycle. Well, I did have it for a week! The next day, I decided to do some longer cruising as that’s what this bike is really built for. It’s worth noting that for 2014, the Street Glide does have a hand-adjustable shock (on one side only), a new hydraulic clutch, and a new 49mm fork, which adds more stiffness to the front and enhances the already solid feel of the bike. The new upgrades are welcome additions, according to most who have ridden the new model.

Pulling out of my neighbourhood and getting closer to the open roads, I was anxious to really test the bike. As I merged onto the freeway, I opened up the throttle and the bike lunged forward. With almost 104 ft-lbs of torque from the new 103 V-twin, the Street Glide has plenty of power to cruise and pass at highway speeds. Riding at around 100 km/h and wind buffeting becoming a problem, I opened up the new vents in the Batwing fairing, and even though there is improvement, it’s still there; this is surprising as the same venting on the Electra Glide works wonders. Deciding to head to Chilliwack, I set the cruise control and enjoyed the ride. The wide set handle bars are very comfortable and combined with the ergonomic seat, riding the Street Glide is a joy. After a quick lunch break, I focused my attention on the brand new Infortaiment system, which puts all the “modern” controls at your fingertips, just like in an automobile. Loaded with Bluetooth technology, 6.5” colour screen, navigation, USB and auxiliary inputs, and housing 5.25” speakers, this is a masterpiece. The entire system is quite easy to use, a big plus when riding on the open roads. I connected my Android phone, chose my 80’s playlist and headed back towards Vancouver. Traveling at around 100 km/h, the 25 watt speakers produced rich and clear sound, even with the minor wind buffeting. After only a short time, I realized that the Infotainment system is must-have for any cruiser. For the next 5 days, I enjoyed riding the 2014 Street Glide Special. Even though there will be some purists who will not like the new Reflex linked ABS system, in which both front and back brakes are linked, the system does work really well. Remember that below 40 km/h, the brakes are electronically de-linked and rider is free to choose the caliper and disc of his or her choosing. Matched with Brembo brakes, the new ABS system allows you to stop on a dime at any time. The Street Glide hasn’t only been Harley’s, but probably the world’s favourite bagger. The new 2014 model is a great blend of traditional heritage and modern technology and with a starting price of $24, 969, it’s a great bike. I think it’s time I hung up my racing leathers after all. Aston Martin

Vanquish Volante Proud Pedigree

L

et’s say I won the lottery, was itching to buy a legendary, ultra-luxury, handcrafted supercar, and it had to be a convertible, what would be my choices? A few makes and models come to mind, but at the end, I would cut a cheque for the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante. Why? Simple…the words “Power, Beauty, and Soul,” which define all aspects of the car, the company, and its heritage. Aston Martin has a proud history and its name was given birth after founder, Lionel Martin, ran successful runs at the Aston Hill in Buckinghamshire, England in 1914. Within a year, the first Aston Martin had been built, the name registered, and an icon born. Within a span of just ten years, Aston Martin was building a competitive range of sports cars and had gained immense reputation for its en18

gineering and design. Fast forward to 1963, when perhaps the most well-known partnership formed with another iconic legend, James Bond. In the 1964 movie Goldfinger, Ian Fleming’s character, Bond, was given the keys to the Aston Martin DB5 in one of the most memorable scenes in TV and movie history. Following the success of the DB5, Ian Fleming decided to stick with Aston Martin in many further James Bond movies. The Vanquish was first launched in 2001 to replace the aging Virage, and was equipped with a V12 motor. Its appearance in the 2002 James Bond movie Die Another Day earned the Vanquish the #3 spot of Best Film Cars Ever. June 2012 saw the unveiling of the new Vanquish, a name fitting for a new flagship. This current, 2nd generation grand tourer is an

Aston Martin Vanquish Volante amazing piece of engineering and in my opinion, has the most beautiful body shape in its class. In 2013, as a natural progression to the Vanquish, the Volante was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to an anticipatory crowd. In the spring of 2014, the Vanquish Volante made its Vancouver

slightly slower than the coupe, I don’t think anybody is going to complain much. Inside the cockpit of the Volante is pure bliss, with luxury, technology, and performance stamped everywhere. Although the interior is completely customizable, expect only the best cow hide on the dash, steering wheel and seats, with all stitching still done by hand. Aston claims that the Volante is a 2+2, but in reality, the back seats are really for carrying groceries – just make sure you don’t spill anything anywhere. The rear seats don’t have much legroom at all, and this is to compensate for the new boot, which is 50% larger than before. Speaking of the new boot, it now has triple-skin protection, meaning it eliminates exterior sounds much like a pair of industrial, noisecancelling ear defenders. And the icing on the cake, the boot can be stowed or opened in 14 seconds, even when traveling at speeds up to 48 km/h. By the time we finished with the photography and “personal interview” with the Volante, there was not enough time to do a full test drive (although I will get the chance next month). However, Aston Martin Sales Manager Roberto Gar-

debut at MCL Motors, located on Burrard Street. Just last month, Aston Martin moved to a newer, larger and more luxurious home, right next door to MCL Motors. When I walked up to the Volante at Vancouver’s only Aston Martin dealership, I was truly at a loss for words, something that doesn’t happen too often, according to my wife. While the look retains Aston Martin aesthetics, the contemporary lines of the car ooze grace, power, and irresistibility. Up front, Ian Callum’s modernized signature grill creates a menacing look, especially when seen through the rear-view mirror. Others have tried to copy this grill, but nobody wears it better than an Aston. On the side, the muscular wheel arches give an indication of the ample underhood power. At the rear, the Volante’s lack of a roof draws attention to the rear deck that sneaks out past the rear spoiler, emphasizing the taut bodywork that overhangs the carbon side sills. Like its coupe counterpart, the Volante’s skin is made entirely from aerospace carbon fibre, providing exceptional strength and Wilson Ng, Scott Warren and Roberto Garcia at Aston Martin Vancouver agility, while shaving off extra pounds. According to Aston, the use of carbon fibre increased torsion rigidity by 14% over its predecessor, the DBS Volante. Finally, on both the hood and cia and Sales Specialist Wilson Ng both assured me that this grand rear deck sit the Aston wing emblems, proudly claiming their terri- tourer was every bit a driving machine. According to Garcia and Ng, tory of perfection. If the styling alone doesn’t do it for you, then the a proud history of racing, design, and engineering mixed with statepowerplant tucked under the hood surely will. of-the art technology can only provide a driving experience like no Aston Martin had to make a remarkable motor to match the gor- other. The Vanquish Volante is Aston Martin’s most expensive car, with geous bodywork, and the new 6.0L AM11 V12 delivers perfectly. Even though this motor started out as a Ford, Aston claims that al- a sticker price starting at $350,000. Many may think that the car is most everything about it has been upgraded, let alone the rods and over-priced, but Scott Warren, MCL’s General Manager puts it best: pistons. To make sure that this multiple six-figure car gets going, the “You cannot put a price on legendary performance, heritage, and V12 churns out 565 horsepower and 457 ft-lbs of torque, enough craftsmanship.” In my opinion, if I can feel like James Bond while to claim a 0-60 mph time of just 4.2 seconds. Although this is just driving the car, then price doesn’t matter. 20

The Evolution of a Sales Professional

M

any many years ago, if the word “Car Sales Man” was mentioned, it sent the image of a person who was out to take away your hard-earned money and make a profit for himself, rather than caring for the needs of his customers. There was no need of any extensive education or training because frankly, it wasn’t thought to be necessary. Even TV sitcoms, like the Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, played upon this impression. Well, times have changed and Sales People are now “Sales Professionals” and their dedication, values, and goals reflect those of the brands they represent.

Today, automobile sales professionals are exactly just that, professionals. In British Columbia, every automobile sales professional must be certified by the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of BC. This governing body ensures that sales associates follow guidelines and adhere to industry regulations. In addition to being certified by the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of BC, most dealerships invest in their sales professionals, whether it be by providing in-depth vehicle knowledge of particular brands, or intensive training with specific aspects of customer service and loyalty. One of the brands that invests a lot of funds in their sales professionals is BMW. On a regular basis, sales professionals at BMW dealerships are given training through many avenues. For example, in addition to intensive knowledge of the models, these sales professionals are even invited to the assembly plants to learn the mechanics behind the building of the car. This way, when customers ask about the quality of the products, the sales professionals can give personal and detailed information with respect to build quality, workmanship, and assembly regulations. DRK Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with two of the top sales professionals at Brian Jessel BMW and discuss how the industry of automotive sales has evolved. Both Valentino Almeida and Khan Parveez are Gold Sales Masters and have earned the trust and respect of their clients. Valentino has been with Brian Jessel BMW for almost 20 years and has seen the industry evolve. “BMW has a Sales University where sales professionals get regular training. Thus, we are constantly learning with the goal of improving ourselves,” says Almeida. And it shows, with Almeida having been a Gold Sales Master for 19 years. In addition, he has been the Number 1 BMW 22

July 2014

Sales Professional in Canada for new and pre-owned vehicles for 3 years running. Parveez, who has been with Brian Jessel BMW for just a few years, was just awarded the Gold Sales Master title from BMW for being the Number 1 Sales Professional for pre-owned vehicles in 2012-2013. Like other dealerships, Brian Jessel BMW makes sure that every client who walks onto the showroom floor is spoken to in his or her language. As a result, the sales professionals at this dealership speak a variety of languages. Parveez was born and raised in Banglore and thus speaks English, Hindi, Kannada, and can understand Punjabi and Tamil. Likewise, Almeida speaks English and Hindi and can also understand Punjabi. “It is important to be able to connect with our clients and we can only do that if we can speak multiple languages,” says Parveez. With evolution comes change and now, the sales professional also wears multiple hats. “I see myself as a solution provider rather than being a sales person,” says Parveez. “Many times, I act as a liaison to communicate client concerns to respective departments at our dealership.”

Cars today are complicated pieces of machinery and for many, they also serve as mobile offices. For the business person, “a car keeps him or her connected with the office,” says Almeida. “We, as sales professionals, need to make sure that we know all the intricacies of our models, so that when a customer has a question or concern, we can deal with it directly rather than transfer him to the service center.” Both Almeida and Parveez agree that the key to being a successful sales professional is understanding client needs and requirements. “Our goal is to gain a client for life rather than completing one sale. As a result, there are times that we’ve sent a client to another brand because it would better suit his or his family’s needs,” say Almeida and Khan. The modern day sales men/women have now evolved to become sales professionals, who reflect the values of the organizations they represent. Most dealerships invest money into their sales professionals so that they retain them for a long time. Both Almeida and Parveez are examples of sales professionals who aren’t only dedicated to their customers, but also their dealerships.

Impaired or Unimpaired Driving

I

mpaired driving is the leading cause of automotive related deaths in Canada. In 2010 alone, 1082 deaths were a result of impaired driving, with nearly half of the total amount of fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents that year. This number is expected to be higher as it does not include individuals killed in impaired crashes in boats, trains, aircraft and industrial vehicles as well as non-fatal injuries as a result of impaired driving. But what exactly counts as impaired driving? Generally, when most people think of impaired driving, they think of drinking and driving. However, impaired driving is the act of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, whether prescribed or illegal. Alcohol affects multiple portions of the brain which results in poor judgement, balance, and coordination. However, the main rea-

lane and in the right direction, while concentrating on other traffic) and understanding sensory information are all effects of lowered brain function as a result of alcohol. The most dangerous effect from this lowered brain activity is feeling tired, which may cause a driver to fall asleep at the wheel. Whether or not it is safe to drive depends on your blood alcohol level (BAC); the maximum legal limit in Canada is 0.08. However a BAC of 0.05 has been shown to affect an individual’s vision, sensitivity to brightness, depth and motion perception, and drivers with a BAC of above 0.05 and lower than 0.08 are 7.2 times as likely to be in a fatal collision. A study performed by the Ontario ministry of Transportation has shown that the amount a person can drink varies depending on their weight, body fat, amount of food consumed, mood, and more. Because of this, it is very dif-

son why drinking and driving is so dangerous is because it slows down the brains reaction to stimuli, thus taking it longer for you to react to hazards on the road. Alcohol affects neurotransmitters, chemical messengers that transmit signals which control thought processes, behavior, and emotion; limiting their activity causing sluggish movement and slurred speech, and slower reaction time. This reduced brain activity is the main danger of alcohol. Difficulty concentrating, performing multiple tasks at once (e.g. keep in the

ficult to measure your own BAC, and even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive. That being said, the best solution is, if you plan on drinking, plan not to drive. Drugs have varying effects depending on the substance consumed. Medicinal marijuana, for instance, has similar effects to alcohol on the brain. There is difficulty in concentration, depth perception, reduced reaction time, poor speed control, and the inability to read signs. Certain painkillers on the other hand, have very limited but equally dangerous side effects. These painkillers are opioids, either natural or synthetic derivations of opium (e.g. morphine, demerol). Opioids depress the central nervous system as well as the brain; this causes you to forget about pain and may result in drifting in and out of a light sleep. Even prescription drugs can have an effect on your driving ability. Prescription drugs commonly cause sleepiness, blurred vision or dizziness. The best ways to minimize the negative effect on your driving ability is to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the side effects of any medication and try to adjust the timing of when you take the medication so as not to conflict with then you need to get behind the wheel. Any drug that affects your senses can have a negative impact on your driving ability, and care should always be taken when considering getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.

How to Sell Your Car Privately By- Anuraag J Singh

N

ot everyone is familiar with the subtleties of selling a car, truck or SUV. If you’re not careful, it can be little more than an opportunity to lose an awful lot of money. Like fall, spring is a traditional new-car season. But, before most people can buy a shiny vehicle off the production line, they must first sell the one sitting in their driveway. And that can be easier than most think. Here are few things to avoid if you want to get the most money from what you’re selling, no matter the car or the circumstances. Don’t trade it in at the dealer No matter how friendly the salesperson or how much money you spend, one thing is for sure: the dealer will never give you what your used car is worth. Commercial resale margins for used cars are notoriously thin, and it’s always in the dealer’s best interest to lowball you, even if it decreases the chances of a sale. You’ll almost always get more on the open market. The only exception is if you’re fabulously wealthy and don’t mind giving up thousands of dollars for the sake of convenience.

If you do have significant repairs made, keep the records to show potential buyers that certain parts of the car are running like new. Think about price • Take the time to decide not only what you want for it, but the least amount you will take. Hold to it and don’t take less. • Be realistic on what you want for your vehicle. Research tools like the Kelly Blue Book of car values or simply viewing what similar makes and models are selling for are good ways of determining your car’s worth. Don’t use bad photos These days, most private used-car sales take place on the Internet. The Internet is a visual medium, so it makes sense to cater to people’s curiosity: Photograph your car thoroughly, and shoot more pictures than you think you need. If you don’t have the camera skills to make your car look good, ask a friend who does. The goal here is to answer a potential buyer’s questions before he sees the car in person, and to eliminate wasting everyone’s time.

Don’t show a dirty car It may sound obvious, but a clean car is easier to sell than a dirty one. The logic is simple: People like buying new things, and few people want someone else’s lived-in, worn-out garbage. We’re not just talking a simple wash and wax here, either. Go for the works: paint cleaning and polishing, interior shampooing, the works. If you do it yourself, it’s free — that is, pure profit — and if you pay someone, it’s rarely more than $200. Either way, presenting a clean car makes it easier to convince people that your vehicle is worth what you claim it is.

Don’t be unprepared to show it Let’s paint a picture: “Mike Carbuyer” shows up at your house, license in hand, ready to test drive your car. The car is in the garage, buried under bicycles and assorted lawn equipment. The kids are running around the driveway screaming. The records are somewhere inside, but you can’t find them, so you have Mike sit at your kitchen table while you scramble around for half an hour. Would you buy a car in that environment? We think not. Preparedness and forethought go a long way.

Fix What Makes Financial Sense As you evaluate the car’s condition, think about: • Easy cosmetic changes, such as touching up paint, repairing dents and fixing windshield chips or cracks. For hail damage and other minor dings, so-called “painless dent repair” services can be far less expensive than replacing complete parts. • Mechanical tuneups. Have a certified mechanic inspect the vehicle for must-do fixes. It may be worth replacing an aging brake system to attract a buyer, for example, but don’t sink so much into repairs that it eats into the profit you’re seeking.

Don’t hold back the sale because you don’t like the potential buyer Don’t laugh; it’s a common mistake. Many people assume that they have to like the person they’re selling their car to, especially if they have an emotional attachment to the vehicle in question. It’s not true. You’re peddling a machine, not auditioning for a soul mate. A difficult person may make negotiations unpleasant, but at the end of the day, cash is all that matters. If someone has interest and money, move that metal. If not, move on. It’s as simple as that.

ften cited as the most beautiful car in the world, the DB5 is the aspiration of many a gentleman. Its timeless elegance and undeniable quality helped propel this particular Aston to the status of ‘Most recognized James Bond car’. Here we take a look why we love the DB5 so much. Released in 1963, the DB5 encapsulated the way we still think of Astons Martins today. Incredible style and sophistication combined with brute force, much like the James Bond character the car is synonymous with. The connection with Bond has stood the test of time with the DB5 making appearances in Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, right up the latest incarnations of Bond in Casino Royale and Skyfall. The DB5 was not a new car for 1963, with Aston Martin preferring to revamp the DB4, which had been in production since 1958. It did, however, have some nice features for the era. Disc brakes and electric windows were ultra-modern; unfortunately Aston Martin resisted updating the drive to the latest independent rear suspension (IRS) preferring to stick with the old solid axle. The DB5 is much happier on straighter roads than racing round a mountain pass, although Bond clearly knew how to get the best out of one, as seen from the Bond film ‘Goldeneye’ where our hero races a Ferrari 355 to good effect. Oh the magic of the big screen…. The Aston Martin DB5 is such an iconic car that even today they still command huge prices (one that featured in the 60′s Bond movies sold for $5 million). This will ensure a level of exclusivity that is fitting for such a car. The assault on your senses is relentless. It looks beautiful, sounds throaty and powerful, the smell of the well-worn leather and walnut is intoxicating. Most of all, it fills you with a sense of wonder. There’s probably not a single man, or woman, who is not completely captivated by this true style icon.

Android Auto If you didn’t already know, Google had its annual Google I/O event on June 24th. During this event Google announced and demoed all of its products, features and software updates that will roll out in the next couple of months. From the new Android L update and Android Wear, to Android TV, Google showcased many new and amazing features and software that’s aimed at the everyday consumer. Google has continued to expand into new markets, with TV being a new one this year. But one particular announcement will have drivers around the world excited is the new Android Auto. During the Android Auto presentation, Google started out with

some facts. In the United States, drivers commute an average of one hour each day. They mentioned how disconnected the car is to the digital world, and how consumers use gadgets to connect themselves while driving. This use of gadgets leads to 25% of all accidents in the states. To bridge this gap, Android Auto was born. Focusing on safety and convenience, the Android platform was redesigned for the automotive environment. Navigation, Communication and Music are the three pillars that Google had as the main focus for the platform. By presenting these 3 features, up front and center, and having the platform being completely voice enabled, Android Auto wants to make your car connected and safer. To begin, they brought a cockpit of a car onto the stage, to which they simply hooked up an Android phone to the dash. It was as simple as that. As soon as the phone was connected, the phone casted Android Auto to the built-in car screen. The entire platform, apps, and controls, are being run by the phone, allowing upgrades and updates to be seamless and painless, making for a consistent experience. This also allows you to personalize your Android Auto experience, allowing you to take your device to any compatible car, bringing with you your music, contacts, and messages. Also, because your phone is always updating, the Android Auto experience will only get better and better. First, they demoed how to play music, which was a single tap on the car touchscreen. The three pillars Google focused on are available immediately on the main screen, so you don’t have to scroll 30

July 2014

AYNfRwief Awto through a list or grid searching for the app. The look and styles of the screens are familiar Android interfaces, which look great and are incredibly intuitive. From there they demoed Google Maps, which is integrated into Android Auto, complete with turn by turn navigation. From a simple button press on the steering wheel, the presenter activated the voice command mode, in which he asked, “How late is the de Young Museum open today?” The car responded, “de Young Museum is open from 9:30 am to 5:15 pm on Wednesday,” and displayed the location of the Museum on Google Maps. Truly amazing stuff. What gets even better is when the presenter spoke the next voice command, “Navigate there,” Android Auto knew the context of the command, and set the navigation to the museum. This sort of contextual awareness was also presented last year for Google’s search engine, and provides a great addition to Android Auto experience. The navigation started, with full voice instructions and on-screen map. It’s important to note that the voice instructions are extremely smooth. There are no pauses or breaks in the speech, and it all sounds like one smooth sentence, which makes the experience that much better. For all those who text, you will be happy to know that Android Auto also supports full voice enabled messaging. Android Auto will read out any messages you have received and by simply speaking the command, “Reply,” you can reply with your message to the sender. The app will automatically repeat your message and ensure you want to send, just in case you made a mistake or it didn’t hear you properly. The future looks extremely bright for Android Auto. I’m sure, however, people are wondering how this is any different from the current smart systems in premium cars today. Well, the answer is pretty simple. Android Auto provides consistency and the benefits of the Android ecosystem. By having a single platform on a variety of car manufacturers, Android Auto provides a consistent experience across many cars. Not to mention that upgrading and enabling new features are easy to get, as you only have to update your phone, since that’s where Android Auto lives. You get all the power of Google’s search and navigation and you can take it with you to any other compatible car. Even more, Google is providing an SDK (Software Development Kit) to developers, so they can begin making apps for the car. Ever wish that certain app on your Android device was available inside your cars system? Well, it’s going to be a reality now, and it’s going to allow a plethora of great apps to reach you inside your car. The wait won’t be long, with already 25 car brands looking to ship with Android Auto, the first compatible cars will be in dealer lots by the end of this year.

The Best Car Movies Of All Time

Bullit

Speed

Smokey and The Bandit

Steve McQueen’s Bullit set the industry standard for cinematic car chases. Arriving a few years before Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry, Steve McQueen plays a similar character: a gritty, no-nonsense cop named FranK Bullit. Bullit goes on a hunt to find the people trying to kill an important witness—a quest ending in one of the most revolutionary car chase scenes in cinematic history. The car of choice for McQueen is the 1968 Ford Mustang “Bullit” Fastback. Because of the film, the Mustang left a legacy of the vent grills.

A few years before Keanu Reeves took on “the machines” in The Matrix, he played Officer Jack Traven in the 1994 thriller Speed. Thanks to a terrorist (Dennis Hopper), Reeves is forced to use his expert driving skills to keep a city bus moving over 50mph or it will explode, killing a number of innocent civilians. Speed was directed by Jan de Bont, who worked on other action blockbusters like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon 3, and has all the high-octane intensity you would expect from a solid ‘90s action flick.

Smokey and The Bandit was the first bigscreen success for the Oscar-winning actress, Sally Field. Field gets mixed up with the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) and Cledus (Jerry Reed) after she runs out on her wedding and needs a ride. Unfortunately for Bandit, the man Field ran out on is the Sherrif’s son. Bandit and Cledus are forced to attempt their cross-country booze smuggle with Sheriff Buford T. Justice and his son Junior chasing them the entire way. Burt Reynolds and Sally Field—what’s not to love?

Cars

Gone In 60 Seconds

The Fast and The Furious

Cars is one of Pixar’s most successful franchises in recent history—the movie did so well that Pixar released a spinoff movie Planes, the just-as-cleverly titled Planes. Star race car Lightning McQueen (narrated by Owen Wilson) is forced to help a small town rebuild their roads after McQueen ruins them. Cars has an all-star cast lending their voices including Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Michael Keaton, George Carlin and even professional race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.

This is one of the better bigger-budget performances by Nicolas Cage. In Gone In 60 Seconds, Cage plays a retired car thief who must re-enter the game in order to pay off his brother’s debt. He must steal 50 luxury vehicles in one night in order to square things off with his employer. This movie is an automobile-lovers dream. It features Ferraris, Lamborghinis and an epic chase scene with the prized 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500 (or “Eleanor”).

The Fast and The Furious made Paul Walker who he was. The franchise is currently working on its seventh movie over a 12-year span. Walker plays a cop who gets involved in the underground world of street racing to get to the bottom of a crime. He eventually becomes caught between the two worlds of being an honest cop and staying loyal to his new friend Toretto (Vin Diesel). The Fast and The Furious taught us all about NOS and even helped spawn the popular energy drink.

The Cannonball Run

Drive

Days of Thunder

1981’s Cannonball Run follows the story of a group of wild street racers that compete in a cross-country race (loosely) based on a true story. With a juggernaut cast including Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Terry Bradshaw, The Cannonball Run is a wildly hilarious and thoroughly entertaining movie. The Cannonball Run was a huge commercial success and helped further launch the careers of many of the actors. It was the 6th highest gross movie of 1981.

Drive is one of better independent films to be released in recent times. Starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, a loner Hollywood stuntman and criminal getaway driver, begins a tumultuous relationship with his neighbor Irene. Gosling is on his way to landing a professional driving contract, but continuing circumstances cause his life to spiral out of control one piece at a time. Gosling’s chilling demeanor and cut-throat persona make for an exceptional cinematic adventure.

Tom Cruise abandons the skies of Top Gun and makes his way to the race track in 1991’s Days of Thunder. Cruise plays Cole Trickle, an up-and-coming stock car racer who tries to make it on the NASCAR circuit. Trickle, who is highly eccentric and independant, learns a valuable lesson about respect and comraderie, even with a competitor. The film didn’t do so hot at the box office, but with a cast including Nicole Kidman and Robert Duvall, it still makes for a relatively entertaining Hollywood blockbuster.

2014 Honda Pilot Touring

Carry 8 people & 250

Reviewed by: J. Dhatt - SJ Power Media Inc. After our last review of the Honda Accord Touring Edition, I was asked to review the new 2014 Honda Pilot. Since I have always been a fan of Honda vehicles, I took the liberty of driving the 4WD 8-passenger Pilot Touring Edition for the work week. This top-of-the-line vehicle came equipped with navigation, rear-DVD system, tri-zone climate control, integrated 2nd row sunshades, rear-view camera and automatic tailgate with lift-up glass hatch. Yep, I had all the bells and whistles on my test vehicle. Honda has always received top marks for building great vehicles – I agree and for this reason, we have a new Honda Odyssey and CR-V in our fleet at home. Would the new Pilot impress me? Let’s find out. 34

July 2014

Right from the onset, the Honda Pilot is a big vehicle, both inside and out. This second-generation Pilot continues to go in the opposite direction than most of the industry and retain the boxy look. As you will read later, this structure has its benefits when it comes to interior space. On the outside, either you like it or you don’t; for me, it’s pleasing to the eye and feels refreshingly different from the European look that most other manufacturers have decided to adapt. The vehicle is brash, yet retains an elegant, look. However, get ready for some changes as the new 2015 Honda Pilot is coming out in a couple of months and from what we’ve heard, it’s been completely redesigned, inside and out.

The interior of the 2014 vehicle can easily accommodate a full hockey team and two spares – it is roomy. There is also an abundance of storage bins and cubbies, more than an elementary classroom. There are dual map pockets in all the doors, storage trays in the passenger-side dashboard, and even a bin located under the third-row armrest. Note-worthy is the massive center console between the front seats. Need even more room? There are many more nooks and crannies to store crayons, water bottles, and other items. If you are carrying 8 passengers, the boxy shape of the vehicle makes a huge difference. The European-looking competitor vehicles, with their rearward sloping rooflines, create reduced headroom,

sharp picture. Honda even added a cover on top of the screen to prevent glare, allowing the picture to be clear at all times. The one spot where Honda missed the ball is with the navigation, audio, and climate controls. Even though there is a separation between the systems, the buttons all look similar and it’s easy to hit the wrong one when making a selection. The setup looks outdated, and my wife preferred the controls on her Honda Odyssey, even though it is two years older. That being said, the learning curve is not steep and within a short time, one becomes comfortable with all the controls. Bluetooth integration is fool-proof and the voice controls on this Pilot are near perfect. From changing radio stations to placing calls, Honda’s voice control never made a mistake. Honda has spent its research dollars very wisely when it comes to engineering. This high-riding vehicle is very easy to drive, almost carlike. And like fine wine fine, the driving experience has only gotten better. Around town, the Pilot is nimble and maneuverability is excellent, SPECS & TECHS which is quite surprising for such a large Base Price: $48,810 vehicle. The 18” tires Price as tested: $50,662 absorbed most road especially for the 3rd Engine: 3.5 L - 24 Valve i-VTEC V6 imperfections, allowrow passengers. The Transmission: 5-Speed Automatic ing for a quiet smooth Pilot, however, gives Torque (lb-ft): 253 ride, much like the ample headroom for Horsepower: 250 more expensive luxury all passengers, maxiFuel Efficiency (Combined): 10.5 (L/100km) SUV’s. I had no probmizing all “usable” lems parallel parking space throughout the the vehicle, thanks to vehicle. The cabin of the Pilot is constructed the rear-view camera system, which has 3 mostly of hard plastic. I’m not a fan of different viewing options, and the parking hard plastic and would prefer softer materi- sensors. On the highway, the Pilot drives als; however, that being said, Honda did it like a big vehicle should – solid and capable. right and the materials look as nice as any Yes, there is body roll, but that is expected hard plastic can. The dash is well-thought for such the tall, 4600 pound vehicle. While and all the major controls are easily within it’s not going to win any slalom races, Honreach. At the center sits the 8-inch naviga- da emphasizes that it is a family hauler, not tion screen, which has vivid colours and a a curve hugging sports vehicle. The large,

heated 10-way power leather seats were very comfortable and provided excellent support for the front passengers. My kids enjoyed watching their favourite Barbie movies on the rear 9-inch DVD system, a definite during long journeys. The Pilot is available in four trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. Regardless of trim, the only engine available is the 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6, which is mated to a five speed automatic transmission. While the engine is quiet, very smooth, and relatively responsive, it definitely falls behind the competition. The 250 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque was good five years ago, but in today’s market, it falls about 30 ponies behind some of its rivals. This is evident when trying to pass at highway speeds. We’re expecting the 2015 to be fitted with a 6-speed transmission, which will help with fuel economy and deliver more oomph. Changes are also expected to the engine and transmission. On the upside, however, the current Pilot gives impressive fuel economy, delivering 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. I averaged about 21.3 mpg during the test drive, which is excellent considering that I made sure the i-VTEC was kicking in often. Keeping safety at the forefront, Honda fitted the Pilot with front airbags, side-curtain bags that cover all three rows, active head restraints, electronic stability control, tirepressure monitoring system, and anti-lock brakes as standard. I was surprised that HID headlamps, lane departure warning, and front collision warning systems weren’t even an option on this model, as they are now available on the Accord. The 2014 Honda Pilot continues to impress even years after its launch. Yes, it does have some shortcomings, but for a family SUV, it delivers excellent value for a great product, even when compared to luxury SUV’s. With the redesigned 2015 hitting the market any time, this might be a great time to pick up the current model for a great price. July 2014

Car Necessities for Parents – A Mother’s Perspective Written by Jasleen Dutt

W

hen I became a mom for the first time about 7 years ago, I was always anxious to take my girl (now girls) out and about in our car. Whether going to a family member’s house, store, or the park, I remember that it was always a chore to get my kids ready for the trips. What’s more, there were so many times I thought, “I wish I had that item in the car to make life easier.” With time and experience,

the commutes became easier. But with the girls growing older, new problems arose. For example, when my elder daughter began to sit in her forward-facing car seat, her shoes would always touch the back of the front seat, which never was a concern to me before – my husband likes to keep a squeaky clean car so, of course, something had to be done. After some of our friends or family members had children, I shared my experiences with them so that their commutes with their children would be easier. In this column, I wanted to share, based on my experiences, the top items to keep in your car if you have children. Organizer: An organizer helps keep children’s items neatly stored in your car. The two most common ones types are the ones that go behind the seat, or ones that sit on the seat. I found that having an organizer was great because rather than sticking everything in the pockets behind the seat, items have a proper location. What’s more is that these organizers can be moved from car to car. Baby Wipes: No explanation needed here. Baby wipes are a definite musthave because they have so many uses. From changing diapers and cleaning spills to wiping hands and mouths, baby wipes have saved me many a day. 38

July 2014

Seat Back Protector: Once your children start sitting in forward facing seats, it’s a good idea to invest in a seat back protector (you could make one easily yourself as well). Believe it or not, even though it’s just dirt, it’s not easy to clean, especially with cloth seats. Neck Guards for Babies: If you’ve ever seen your baby’s head moving around when he or she is sleeping, then you know that a neck guard is important. Not only will it give your baby a more comfortable sleep, but helps protect the neck as well from sudden jerks. Seat Saver: Any parent knows that when kids eat or drink in the car, they will undoubtedly spill something. A seat protector goes under the car seat and does just that – protects the rear seat from messes and even cuts and tears. I used to take the seat protector out once a week, shake or rinse it, and put it back. Towels/Blankets: For a short time, my younger daughter would, once in a while, throw up in the car and at those times, there were never enough tissues. Rather, I began to keep a couple of towels, of varying sizes, in the car and they were game changers. The towels were also handy for other emergencies. Keeping extra blankets, especially during fall and winter, were very important and are highly recommended. Car Window Shades: Many vehicles now have some sort of tinting on the rear windows. Never-theless, invest in some sort of window shade to keep sunlight and heat off your children. There are varying styles and shapes, so choose the one that fits your car best. Bluetooth Speakerphone: Many cars nowadays come standard with Bluetooth connectivity. But for those of you who don’t have this feature, it’s not only convenient but required by law if using a cell phone. Trust me, if you have children in your car, don’t use a cell phone when driving unless you have a Bluetooth device, because a split second bad decision could ruin your world. I hope that this list of essential car items for parents will be useful and that just by reading this article, you will be prompted to make your commute with your children easier. These are simple ideas that will decrease your stress levels when driving with your children. Driving with

Lease or Loan? lIz jW lon? A

lot of my clients often ask whether a lease or a loan for their upcoming equipment purchase, is a better option for them. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. It really depends on each individual or company making the purchase, and the circumstances surrounding it. With a lease, the leasing company purchases the equipment and it is registered in the leasing company’s name. The driver or company then makes monthly payments for the use of this equipment. A leasing company can put restrictions on the equipment, such as not allowing alterations, or mileage restrictions. There is also a residual value at the end of a lease. The residual value is the amount that the equipment can be purchased for to buy it outright. The residual value can be re-leased and there can be options for the equipment to be returned to the leasing company. If returning equipment the residual value may have to be guaranteed or a possible penalty may be imposed. Working with drivers every day, I find the majority prefer leases over a traditional loan. However, personally I don’t want to restrict driving or impede a driver’s work in any way. I put in a residual value of $1 to avoid restrictions and pay the equipment off. The driver is paid up in full with the end of the lease and off they go with their paid off equipment. This opens doors for drivers to work as much as they want to. With a lease there can be certain tax advantages. The payments and taxes can be used as possible write offs. The payments are tax deductible and the GST portion can be claimed. Expensing the payments for a lease is done rather than depreciating the equipment as a capital cost. The equipment does not appear on your balance sheet, which helps with debt to equity ratios. With a traditional loan, the equipment is put in the driver’s name, and it is paid back in installments until paid in full, just like a car loan. I’ve seen only a few clients go this route, and every single one of them did it for the exact same reason; they wanted to claim the GST back immediately. They could not afford the down payment and needed the GST back to live on after they cleaned out their bank accounts. Claiming the GST in one lump is an advantage to the traditional loan, but if you can barely cover your down payment and have nothing to live on, it may be in your best interest to continue - Pash Brar B.A. Pash is a mobile leasing representative with Auto One Leasing LP in Vancouver. DRK News / Views / Stuff saving some money before making a major equipment purchase. Claiming GST is not a quick fix to a tight financial situation. It may be just a temporary solution to over spending and mismanaging funds. I live and work in the Vancouver, BC area and deal mainly with BC drivers. Our Harmonized Sales Tax or HST was removed in April 2013, and that brought about changes with prorate in BC that effect drivers with traditional loans. Specifically an exit tax was brought in. It wasn’t apparent until now as drivers were busy working in spring and summer and no one cut their prorate plates. Now with winter conditions arriving, some drivers like to take time off for vacation. They cut their prorate plates and put storage insurance on their equipment. If the equipment ceases to be prorated, they may be subject to a 7% exit tax of the depreciated purchase price of the equipment. If the equipment is leased, it is not subject to this exit tax. If the equipment is being used primarily in BC, or if it’s registered outside of BC, then the equipment is not subject to the exit tax. Those with traditional loans may find themselves paying $10,000 on newer equipment just to get their prorate plates reinstated. If changing fleets, make sure you get your new prorated plate the same or next day to avoid the exit tax. In BC, please call your prorate insurance office before you consider cancelling your plates, and your agent can guide you. I know my clients are well protected from the exit tax with leases which are not subject to exit tax. So when looking to purchase any equipment, it’s important to talk to your finance person or institution about what option is best for you. Each situation and each client is different, so discuss what is best for YOU, whether it’s a loan or a lease, or even a full cash buyout. I encourage my clients to see their accountants as well before making any purchase decisions. They know what’s best when it comes to your taxes, so please use that as a resource.

It’s all Design and Functionality By- Gerg Sandhu

W

hen I was asked to write this article for an automobile magazine, I was a bit perplexed as to what I would say? My area of expertise is architecture and building interiors, not cars. However, the more I thought about it, I realized that regardless of the space, the fundamentals of interior design are in fact the same. Both disciplines dabble with form, function, and materials.

This topic took me back to my first childhood memory of cars and the family trips in my dad’s 1967 Ford Fairlaine. How he loved that car, and every car he has owned since. His nostalgic Ford had a look of living rooms with wall to wall carpeting and chrome door knob accents. The car of yesteryear did its job and disappeared shortly after it outlived its usefulness, enjoying none of the appeal of the cars today. Those cars were built to serve non-glamorous duties as kid haulers with bench front seats and basic interior amenities. 42

They were a far cry from the cars of today. Architecture has always had a link to automotive interiors. Like architecture, the automobile interior is an instrument of both art and utility. Badges like Porsche promote a performance style and driver centric cockpit, while Lexus sedans appeal to buyers by creating luxury and creature comforts. Automobile designers obsess over colours and materials much the same the way that I would when I design a building interior. Even the cheapest cars have the colourful playfulness that you might find in an Ikea kitchen. Automobile designers and architects are cut from the same cloth and have many similarities; however, what separates today’s automobile from the buildings of today is the integration of electronics.

The integration of electronics is the biggest challenge to both architects and automotive designers. Arguably, architects are doing a far worse job of it. The automobiles of today are the epitome of the

Your One Stop Shop technological integration into building is completely inept in the world of architecture. Architects have lots to learn from automotive interiors and their designers. The automobile is highly individual artifact of personal mobility. Its appearance varies on a long continuum between art and

utility, depending on the individual’s needs or preferences. Yet, it is always a more thoughtfully conceived and executed place than anywhere else you might be sitting at this moment. Although I design buildings now, the automobile has left an indelible impression on me since my childhood. I love cars more now than I did when I was a kid. To me, the automobile represents what is possible when designers are challenged to produce their best work.

Graco recalls 1.9 million car seats in U.S.

U

nder pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Graco Children’s Products has agreed to recall about 1.9 million rear-facing infant seats sold in the U.S. with a faulty buckle that can make it difficult to free a child during an emergency. In February and March, Graco said it would recall about 4.2 million forward-facing child seats - designed for older children - with the same buckle. But Graco told federal regulators it did not want to recall the 1.9 million rear-facing infant seats because even if the buckle was hard to release, the seat was of a different design: The portion of the seat holding the child could be detached from its base and quickly lifted from the vehicle, while the base would remain anchored to the vehicle’s seat. The safety agency pushed Graco, saying that “the hazards and risks involved in the delay of extricating a child from a rearfacing infant car seat in any emergency situation are significantly increased and rise to the level of unreasonable risk when the harness buckle is difficult to open or is stuck in a latched condition.” If Graco had continued to resist and federal regulators would not back off, the dispute could have resulted in a public hearing on the defect and, eventually, a court case. Another child-seat manufacturer, the

Evenflo Co., which used the same buckle, also balked at recalling about 1.4 million rear-facing infant seats, citing the same reasons as Graco. Evenflo “maintains its position that a recall is not warranted,” Jennifer Teitler, a spokeswoman for the company wrote in an email. But the safety agency issued a statement that it would continue to “push” Evenflo “to take action and address the safety risk.” Graco decided to recall the additional seats after further investigation revealed “a higher than typical level of difficulty” in unlatching the buckle, according to a report from Graco posted Tuesday on the safety agency’s website. “Both NHTSA and Graco investigated consumer concerns in an effort to address the issues with the buckles used on certain infant car seats. We are pleased to announce a solution that we believe is in the best interest of consumers and underscores our shared commitment to child passenger safety, Laurel Hurd,

president of Graco Children’s Products, said in a statement. Graco said that it was not aware of any injuries related to the problem on the rear-facing infant seats. However, that may not have been the case with the forward-facing seats recalled in February and March. The agency’s investigation noted that Graco was a defendant in a wrongful-death suit in California Superior Court in Los Angeles County. It involved a 2-year-old girl who “was killed in a car fire following a motor vehicle accident” in 2011. Ashley Mowrey, a spokeswoman for Graco, said that the buckle was not at fault, but that the case was settled out of court and the details were confidential. The repair for all the seats involves replacing the defective buckle, which Graco will provide free to customers. The faulty buckles used by Graco and Evenflo were bought from AmSafe Commercial Products of Elkhart, Indiana.
