“Being on staff has been arguably one of the best experiences in my high school career. It was a fun way to incorporate my love of writing in a whole new way I never even thought about.”

“Being on staff has given me so many experiences that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I learned so many new skills, met tons of amazing people and even traveled to new places.”

“Who I am today is in large part thanks to my experience on staff. I’ve grown not only as a graphic designer but also as a leader. I’ve learned about the power of working with those around to create something that you can be proud of.”

SENIOR STAFFERS

design by Ajay Singireddy

“My time on staff has helped me grow as a student, journalist and human. As a student, I learned more about my school and the people in it. As a journalist, I have learned writing and film skills and how to use them to tell the stories of others. And as a human, I learned how to embrace my passions rather than be scared of them.”

“Being on staff for the past three years has been a great experience. Being able to meet so many different types of people through this program and getting to tell everyone’s stories. The pub room quickly became a second home for me and I spent many hours there a week helping create content. Besides meeting some of my lifelong friends on staff, I was able to grow as a journalist and as a person.”

“Being on staff to me means that I am representing the media of our school in a positive light. I am eternally grateful for my skills I have established throughout this process and the friendships I have made through it.”

“Being on staff has allowed me to meet so many people that I probably never would’ve interacted with had I not joined. Whether it be the people in the class itself, or interviewing everyone under the sun, I have made friends that I’ll definitely never forget.”

“I love being on staff so, so much, it means the world to me. I love the people I get to interact with everyday and how I can spend four out of my eight periods in the pub room. I’ve learned so many valuable lessons and organizational skills from these classes and am going to miss them when I leave.”

“Being on staff has always felt like a little job. The rush of final deadline stress days, staying in the pub room after school or during other classes has always been rewarding, and made me feel like I’m at a job in the office. Staff is a lot of amazing people crammed into a room with no windows, and I could not be more grateful for the memories, achievements, friends and mentors it has brought me.

Sylvia Sasse

“Being on staff has absolutely meant the world to me. I’ve looked forward to being in the journalism room for class every single day, and if there was a way for me to keep coming back, I would in a heartbeat. I’m so proud of the work we’ve done, but more than that, I’ve also made some of my best friends ever through staff.”

“Being on staff changed my high school experience. I was able to learn about things going on around school, interview people I would’ve never met and realize I had found my passion.”

“Being on staff means everything to me. It has been something I have wanted to do my entire high school career, but was only able to do for my final year. It has changed the way that I look at my future. I have so many more options for careers and college majors because of the skills, passions and interests that I have accrued this year.”

“During my time on staff, I have been a photographer and a designer. I had never designed or photographed in my life and it was something different for me, but it helped challenge me to new things and being on staff helped me grow as a person and have a different perspective of things.”

“Being on staff has given me friendships that I wouldn’t have had if I never stepped foot into the pub room. This amazing staff surrounds you by people that allow you to be heard and feel like you belong.”

NYT GAMES

During the course of our high school careers, trends have come and gone. But one thing that has grown with us and many of us look forward to everyday is the New York Times (NYT) daily games. This page is dedicated to these games which have brought us closer together.

For Strands: Similar to a crossword, look for different words scrambled in the space, as long as letters are next to each other (left, right, up, down, diagonal) they can be part of the word. Every letter is used, and none are used more than once. There are eight words total.

For Connections: Look for four categories among these ideas. There are four categories total with four theme words in each. Look for words that have something in common.

“I thought that it would be hard to find new friends when I got to high school

EXPECTATIONS VS REALITY

That wasn’t the case. I was heavily involved with the band program and immediately found many friends through that. Getting involved in sports, clubs and other extracurriculars helps you quickly find a group of people that think like you and have some common interests. Those people will become some of your best friends and stay with you throughout your time in high school and even afterward.”

SETH POINDEXTER

“Honestly I expected high school to be a very scary but fun experience, one that would at least last a long time.

I was right about the first part anyways. I had a lot of fun all throughout high school, and got to experience a lot of fun things with my friends. It went by in a flash because now I’m here about to graduate and leave North behind forever. It was an amazing experience, but one that went by too quick.”

EMILIANO ROSALES

“I came into high school kind of anxious and not knowing what to expect.

CAYLYN PRUITT

“I came from a small private school before North, so I was really expecting it to be way more chaotic than it actually is

Seniors discuss their expectations of high school compared to the reality of their experience

ALEXIS JONES

“I expected high school to be kind of scary. As someone who’s shy, I expected not to make many friends

LISON CLOTEAUX

“What I expected while starting my freshman year was that my entire career path would be based on what classes I [took],

RAM GOWDA

I thought it would be way more strict [than I thought], but it really wasn’t that bad.”

Being involved in extracurriculars helped me find lots of friends. I also expected there to be lots of drama, which there is definitely a lot of.”

But, I’ve come to realize that this was not true, and that I could still find a passion to devote to no matter if it was in senior year or later on.”

I was happily surprised when there were so many unique opportunities for students. I’ve loved being involved in C4, sports teams, and clubs such as FCA and FCCLA. I’ve really enjoyed my four years in high school and I’m going to miss this.”

SPEAKING TO THE PAST

What would seniors say to their freshman self by

“I would tell myself to make more friends and be more confident.”

“To not worry about the small things, look at the bigger picture and know you will get through it.”

“I would tell myself that everything always works out in the end. Even the most serious, upsetting, or disappointing situation will pass with time. A bad test score isn’t, and will never be, a defining characteristic. For a long time I would get caught up in my own anxiety, however, life has a way of always figuring itself out.”

“Get involved, stay organized, don’t be afraid to ask for help and make fun memories along the way.”

“Your teachers are there to help you, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them and take advantage of the resources they provide you with.”

“Work hard, you can’t build a house without a foundation.”

“I would tell my freshman self to stay true to myself and be conscious of who you surround yourself with. Also don’t be afraid to try new things and don’t do anything to please others, because at the end of the day the only thing that matters is you.”
