The Conservation Leadership Academy (CLA), hosted by Lacawac Sanctuary, was held recently. Sixteen campers from Wayne, Pike and surrounding counties were treated to a week of outdoor adventures. Many professionals volunteered their time to give the students outstanding experiences in the conservation field.

Various conservation partners helped coordinate the week long residential camp: Nick Spinelli from the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District (LWWMD); Emily Rinaldi from the Pike Conservation District, and Garret Beers and Tim Latz from state department of Conservation and Natural Resourses (DCNR)Bureau of Forestry.

The highlight of the week was a day

kayaking on the Delaware River with 10 Bald Eagle sightings. Other favorites include but are not limited to cheese tasting at Calkins Creamery, water sampling on Lake Wallenpaupack, learning to fly fish, bird banding with Dr. Meg Hatch of Penn State Worthington and Dr. Rob Smith of the University of Scranton, and a high ropes course. This diverse group of campers lived and worked together for six days.

“CLA has taught me many things about science, leadership and myself,” said Francesca Samony, one of the campers. “Before attending this camp, I was unsure of my interests, but now my love for biology has been solidified and I plan to study that in college.”

“I learned many virtues about leadership

and conservation that I will have for probably the rest of my life,” said Chris Wallace, another camper, “and I have 16 new best friends that I will know for a very long time.”

• At 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, the Get Outdoors Poconos hike series continues with a 2.6-mile, easy hike on Cherry Creek Loop near Delaware Water Gap. Concrete stepping stones lead across Cherry Creek and into the 28.5acre park where Cherry Creek, Brodhead Creek and the mighty Delaware River meet.

at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.

Around Town Pajama Program

The “Pajama Program” is a national program that provides new pajamas and new or gently used books to children in need. Throughout the months of August and September, Frailey Insurance will collect new children’s pajamas (Sizes 2T to 12 years) and new or gently used books (ages 2-8; Eric Carle books and board books especially appreciated). After being collected, Monroe County Children and Youth Services will deliver the items.

“Some of the children that will receive items live in out-of- home placement, such as foster homes, group homes and temporary housing facilities. Other children that will be helped are living with their families at home, but below the poverty level, often in need of more appropriate clothing and shelter. Some of these children have rarely enjoyed the simple comfort of having a parent tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story,” said Diane Rogers, program manager at Monroe County Children and Youth Services.

Michele A. Frailey-Miller, chief operations officer, said, “We so often take for granted what we have. As community partners, we want to help those who might not have a pair of pajamas or a storybook of their own. They should be able to experience the comfort and warmth and the happiness it brings when they read a bedtime story. It’s important to let them know someone cares.”

Help Remove Invasive Plant

An invasive and fast-growing plant, known as mile-a-minute weed (persicaria perfoliata), has been discovered in our region. This annual vine can grow up to six inches a day, quickly smothering other native plants and even ascending into the tree canopy where it becomes very dense.

The plant can be controlled early by hand-pulling. The Delaware Highlands Conservancy, together with the Downtown Hawley Partnership, is hosting a work day to remove mile-a-minute weed that is currently growing in Hawley’s popular Riverside Trail on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 9 a.m. to noon. If you would like to participate in the work day, register by contacting Jason Zarnowski at the Conservancy at jason@ delawarehighlands.org or by calling 570226-3164, ext. 6. Please bring your own work gloves, and lunch will be provided.

Landowners throughout the Upper Delaware River region should remain vigilant in identifying and removing mile-aminute weed on their properties. To identify it, look for a vine with alternate, triangular, light green leaves that are barbed on the underside, with round leaf-like structures surrounding the stem. Learn more about this invasive plant and how to remove and control it from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, www.dcnr.state.pa.us.

Flower Sale

The Pocono Mountain Women’s Club and the Clymer Library have joined forces to raise funds through a fall flower sale.

The two organizations have teamed with Vesey’s Seed Ltd. to offer bulbs and plants available from growers in Holland and the U.S. For each order of product shipped, the women’s club and library will equally earn 50 percent of the sales revenue. Proceeds from this fund raising effort will be used for programs of community support by both organizations.

Pocono Medical Center recently presented its donation of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the East Stroudsburg Softball Little League.

Learning Conservation The 42nd annual Monroe County Conservation Camp was held recently at Stony Acres, a 119-acre wildlife sanctuary/recreational facility owned by the students of East Stroudsburg University in Marshalls Creek. A total of 34 campers, ages 14-18, completed the week-long residential camp participating in a variety of hands-on and classroom programs. The campers were exposed to many aspects of the conservation and natural resource fields. Highlights of the week included archery, herpetology program, soil and land use, confidence course, muzzle loading, a community farm tour, wildlife rehabilitation and a two-day canoe trip on the Delaware River.

The camp ended with family day and student recognition.

Camper David Dietsch of Greentown was recognized as the Conservation Camp 2016 Outstanding Camper. David received a plaque and partial scholarship to Penn State’s Conservation Leadership School 2017.

School retirees meet The Wayne/Pike Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees held its recent meeting at Central House in Beach Lake.

The guest speaker was Mike Dougherty, who is blind, along with his guide Mac. He spoke about the history of Seeing Eye dogs and how they are trained. The cost of training one service dog can range up to $50-60,000, of which the recipient only pays $150. The rest of the cost is covered by donations. No tax money is received by any of the many organizations that train Seeing Eye and service dogs. Mike’s dog was donated

New Rotary officers The Honesdale Rotary welcomed a new president, Zachary Jennings, at its annual installation dinner at Woodloch Springs in Hawley. Jennings, who is recently married and has a private legal practice in Honesdale, said he looked forward to working with the club and thanked outgoing President Andy Lane Chapman for her service the past year.

The club also installed president-elect Laurie Harrington, vice president Steve Moulton and sergeant-at-arms Barry Tretheway. Kay Reynolds retained her position as secretary and Larry Caruth as treasurer.

Chapman, who received Rotary gifts — mugs and a scarf — as part of the club’s thank you for her service, called the Honesdale Rotary “a well-oiled machine that got things done.” She especially thanked Kay Reynolds, secretary, for keeping everyone informed.

The Club also awarded Paul Harris pins to Warren Schloesser and Larry Caruth for longtime service. Paul Harris founded Rotary in

1905, and the recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

The club meets every Tuesday at noon at Cordaro’s Restaurant in Honesdale. All are invited.

BAKED BANANAS WiTH CHOCOlATE iCE 4 firm, ripe bananas, with skins (about 7 ounces each) 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/3 cup sugar 3 tablespoons lime juice 1/2 cup orange juice from chocolate ice Place bananas on baking sheet and bake at 350° for 15 to 20 minutes, or until skins are blackened and bananas are soft but not mushy. Set aside to cool slightly. Melt butter ORANGE-GlAZED CHiCKEN in large skillet over medium heat; add sugar 2 (2-1/2 pounds each) broiler-fryers, and lime juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, cut into quarters until light caramel color, about 5 minutes.

Whisk in 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup vegetable oil water , dissolving any lumps. Add orange 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon dry mustard zest and salt; bring to boiling over low heat.

Dough will be stiff. Cover and chill 2 hours. Shape dough by heaping teaspoonfuls into ropes, each 6-inches-long and 1/4-inch thick. For smooth even ropes, roll them back and forth on lightly floured cloth-covered board. On greased cookie sheet, shape each rope into figure-8, letting ends extend 1/2-inch. Complete cookies one at a time. Beat egg white until foamy, gradually adding 1/4 cup sugar while beating. Brush tops of cookies with sweetened egg white. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Yield: 48 cookies.

Lower heat; simmer, covered, 20 minutes. Stir in raisins, sugar, orange rind and vanilla. Preheat oven to a slow 300°.

Peel, halve and core apples, about 1/8-inch thick. Arrange apples in overlapping circles in a 9-inch glass pie plate or ovenproof casserole. Sprinkle on nutmeg. Spoon rice mixture on top, mounding in center. Beat whites in small bowl until foamy. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread over rice to edge of pan, mounding in the center. Bake in lower third of preheated oven, 300°, for 20 minutes until meringue is lightly browned. Cool at least 30 minutes. Slice into wedges; serve warm.
