1434. TRAJAN. 98-117 AD. AR Denarius (3.43 gm). Struck after 114 AD. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front / Virtus standing right, foot resting on helmet, holding reversed spear and parazonium. RIC Π -; BMCRE p. I l l note, and cf. BMCRE 601; RSC 274c. Choice EF. Very Rare. ($400) Although this issue is very common and all the major references cite it as such, the obverse die with the bust seen from the front that was used to strike this particular coin is quite rare. Out of the 139 denarii of Trajan pictured in the British Museum catalogue, only three exhibit this frontal portrait style.
