School chorus to stage production of Go West

BY ROBERT HAMILTON Students in the Bowman Foster Ashe Elementary School Chorus will stage performances of Go West on Wednesday, May 6, 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., at the school, 6601 SW 152 Ave. Admission is free, but any donations for the school will be accepted. As part of an ongoing initiative to link the school’s music program to the larger ideas and issues of the country, the Spectacular Stars will feature this production. This new play enables the students to discover an untold world of America’s Westward Expansion, the Homestead Act and modes of transportation to the West. Through this musical journey, some students will be reinforcing what they are learning in their history and social studies classes. For others it will be the first time
they learn about America’s Westward Expansion. The musical message is that the riches of the West were found not only in gold but in wide-open spaces, waving fields of grain, owning your own land and fresh starts on life. The play is set in the 1800s. Gold has been discovered in the hills of California and land is given away to settlers willing to make a fresh start in the newly explored regions of the American West. Cowpokes and miners, farmers and trappers, gamblers and adventurers of all kinds are making their way west to chase the promise of the American Dream.
