etting to know you – and go to you” was the brand-building theme of the day when Aventura Hospital and Medical Center hosted an Aventura Marketing Council breakfast meeting featuring marketing and business development expert Janice Winter of Janice Winter Inc. - specializing in building branded businesses, retail operations and customer engagement. Bob Hollander of Brown & Brown Insurance, standing in for AMC Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, helped welcome hundreds of “famous name” business and community leaders gathered at Florida International University’s Kovens Conference Center along with Aventura Hospital CEO Dianne Goldenberg. During the “A-List” AMC networking event, guests learned about Aventura Hospital’s “A-List Healthcare” encompassing comprehensive patient services and state-of-the-art technology facilitating greater efficiency and rapid care. Goldenberg noted, “Every day, we’re focused on how our team at Aventura Hospital can provide the best Emergency Department staff, the best doctors and nurses, cardiovas-

cular surgeons, anesthesiologists, pathologists, oncologists, respiratory therapists, lab techs, behavioral health workers, wound care, diabetes education, and overall operations. We’re here to serve the community with an ongoing commitment to providing ‘A-List Healthcare.’” Striking up the “brand,” Winter provided insight into how iconic brands are built. Formerly an executive with Estee Lauder, Winter went on to serve as president of Judith Ripka Companies, playing a pivotal role in leading the growth of the business from its early stages as an entrepreneurial startup into a renowned luxury lifestyle brand with 13 U.S. retail locations and over 200 points of wholesale distribution. She also founded Luxury Brand Consulting, Inc. in 2007 - a company focused on brand building, marketing and business development, “Branding is based on developing a set of associations so consumers can make an emotional connection,” Winter explained.

“Building a brand involves talking about your culture and what you stand for.” Sharing the Judith Ripka success story, Winter emphasized, “Our strategy was centered on product differentiation and customer engagement to forge relationships and become part of the community. We made it fun to come to our stores and created a jewelry and lifestyle brand for women who had a lot of roles to play in their lives. We also focused on being a ‘value engineer’ by building stores that looked beautiful for a whole lot less. Consistency is key - so our sales team had to have a total understanding of who we were and what we stood for in terms of the ‘customer experience’ regardless of what town we were opening a store in. “Building a brand starts with digging in to understand what customers are looking for, See AVENTURA HOSPITAL, page 4 Photography by Andrew Goldstein

Holiday Wishes

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING At holiday time, when asked, “What do you wish?” the universal response is “Peace”. “Peace on Earth” is a wish that is centuries old and is still repeated today. If you wish for something it usually means that you don’t have it. If you have something then you do not have to wish for it. Why is peace so elusive? Why is peace so difficult to achieve and to maintain not only on a grand scale in the world, but on a smaller, more intimate scale with loved ones, families, friends, co-workers and acquaintances? To achieve peace, it is important to understand that war is not inevitable and it is not the norm. It is also important to know that peace has to come from you and from your own inner peace. Inner peace appears to be

equally difficult for people to achieve and maintain. Many people would agree that it is hard to find inner peace. Not only do they profess to want it they actively seek it in numerous ways. They seek it through many different philosophies, religions and belief systems. However, even with guidance and guidelines to follow, some people never seem to find it. It eludes them. The answer is so simple it is often overlooked. The answer is inside of you in your own heart. The answer is the second part of the ancient wish; “Peace on earth, Good will to men”. You need to love your fellow man and wish him well and that will be returned to you. You need true love, pure love without any thought or hope of personal gain. It is a universal law that what you send out from your own heart will come back to you from the heart of others. You can create the peace you seek. If everyone wishes for peace, and everyone creates peace in their own hearts, then peace will prevail. Your holiday wish can come true. You can make peace a reality and not just a wish.

Hochberg Preparatory School accepting new student applications Registration for babies through eighth grade is now open at the innovative STEM school, Hochberg Preparatory. This dynamic environment integrates Jewish values and ethics into a cutting edge Secular curriculum. Children, beginning at Jr. Kindergarten (age 4), learn not only Hebrew and Judaics, but also choose either Spanish or Mandarin-Chinese as an additional language. They participate in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program that is second to none. Every child graduates with a strong background not only in all subjects, but possesses the skills necessary to enroll in honors’ classes in many areas. A typical Hochberg Preparatory student leaves eighth grade with the ability to receive high school credit for mathematics, foreign language and science, to name a few. They also become class leaders and all excel academically. In addition to the core subject areas, children participate in music, art and physical education. After school, students attend sports, Musical Theatre and a variety of enrichment classes. Moreover, the integration of the “Leader in Me” program during the school day enables every child to develop leadership skills and to learn how to effectively interact with others. Concurrently, Hochberg Preparatory School provides a strong professional development program for staff. Because of the ever-changing needs of students, the school leaders under-

stand the importance of maintaining ongoing training for the entire staff. Admission to the school is achieved in one of two ways. For the Early Childhood Department, parents can schedule a tour of the facility with the Director of Admissions at 305-933-6946 ext. 7832. The Day School (grades K-8) process requires a tour, testing by the school psychologist, data from other schools attended and a visit, by the student, to an age appropriate classroom. For information, contact Merav Tal at 305-933-6946 ext. 7832. Acceptance is completed on a rolling admissions basis. It is recommended that parents who are interested in enrolling their children should register as soon as possible. Hochberg Preparatory School is located at 20350 NE 26th Avenue, on the corner of Ives Dairy Road and 26th Avenue. For more information, visit www.hochbergprep.org.

Surviving the Citizens’ Insurance Breakup? BY RUSSEL LAZEGA, Attorney and Author

Okay. So it feels a little like that Junior Prom debacle with the cute little redhead from Mr. McGinty’s chemistry class. You remember it. I mean, sure you weren’t really that crazy about her anyway but when she broke it off with you and left you finishing out the party with “spaced-toothed Susie Stottlemeyer” . . . well, there was just no getting over it. “How could she dump me?” You wondered. “I’ve been so loyal; so attentive; so prompt with my claim-free premium payments.” Nearly 200,000 Florida homeowners are feeling a little like that these days as they open notifications from Citizens’ Insurance telling policy holders that they’re being dumped into the laps of another insurer which may charge higher rates and provide less coverage than they had been getting with Citizens’. Worse yet, many of these sloppy-second non-standards are unproven, unknown, recent start-ups with little or no financial history. And unlike Citizens’ poli-

cies (which generally cap at a maximum 10% per year increase) – the sky is the limit for our back-up plan – rates on renewals can rise as much as the state will let them. So is there any saving this relationship? Well, yes . . . maybe. Citizen’s policyholders have been given an option to reject the transfer and either stick with Citizens’ or select another private company -- but policyholders must respond in writing within 30 days or the transfer happens. Fail to respond and you’re stuck with the “Space-toothed Susie” that they give you. Who knows? Maybe we’ll look back and say that something better came along . . . we were better off without her. But with private market increases hitting 30%, 40% or more, this may be a breakup to cry over. Russel Lazega is an attorney and author of two of Florida’s most widely distributed legal textbooks on Florida Insurance Law. He has also served as chief general counsel to an auto insurer. Mr. Lazega currently represents accident victims and consumers at war with their insurance companies. He is based in Dania Beach, North Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida. Paying for what you value The County’s new fiscal year began on Oct. 1, but getting there wasn’t easy. On one hand, taxpayers were calling on their elected leaders to provide economic relief by keeping the property tax rates flat. On the other hand, doing so would mean placing services provided by police, fire rescue, the library system and the animal shelter in financial difficulty. Tough choices had to be made and in the end, while not every service emerged completely unscathed, essential services remain secure—at least for the time being. But the future of Miami-Dade County’s Public Library System, as well as the thousands of cats in dogs in the care of Animal Services Department remains uncertain. It’s been said that we most value that which we pay for through charitable contributions. It’s how we stand behind the causes we believe in. So in that spirit, Miami-Dade County is establishing a trust fund to allow the public to make voluntary contributions toward the county services that matter most to them. Through this trust, you and other like-minded citizens will be able to pool your resources and direct them exactly where you believe they’re needed most. Over the next few weeks, property tax bills will be mailed to nearly a million households and businesses. A postage-paid envelope will be enclosed, making it convenient for concerned citizens to make a voluntary monetary donation over and above their property tax payment. Whether you choose to provide additional support to animal services, the library system, the police or fire rescue, your donation will help ensure that the services you care about will continue to be provided. Keep in mind that these donations are tax deductible and will help meet pressing community needs. Be sure to consult your tax advisor with any specific questions regarding your deduction. Help keep your community moving forward and give a little something back.

New FPL/Harris Interactive study finds pets can increase energy bills Do you leave the lights or television on for your pet when you’re not at home? If so, you’re not alone. Florida Power & Light (FPL) Company has unveiled new information that suggests Fido and Fifi may be the culprits in higher energy bills. FPL’s September 2013 survey of more than 1,500 Florida adults revealed that 58% of Floridians own a dog, cat or bird. Of those, about 86% report they leave certain electronic items on for their pets, while they are not home. The most common items left on for pets are air conditioning (73%), ceiling fans (38%), lights (27%), the television (17%) and the radio (9%) Ceiling fans left on all the time can account for up to $7 a month spent on FPL bills to keep pets comfortable. 47% of Florida adults consider being comfortable the most important, followed by saving money (44%). Only 9% consider saving energy to be most important. “In order to save on energy, it’s ok for pet

owners to raise their thermostats up a bit while they are not home. Animals should not have any problems at temperatures between 78-82 degrees,” said Dr. Ted Sanchez, D.V.M., veterinarian and owner of the Silver Bluff Animal Clinic located in Miami. “FPL is committed to helping customers understand what can make their bills go up and down, and offer energy-saving tools to help them make informed energy choices,” said Marlene Santos, vice president of customer service at FPL. “FPL is even featuring pets as the home energy experts in our new Pet Project advertising campaign.” As a first step, Santos recommends customers take the Online Home Energy Survey to receive a personalized energy savings plan with expert tips that can help change the current way they use energy and save up to $250 a year in energy costs, without impacting their pets. When patients are in the hospital, visits from family and friends often lift their spirits and bring a level of comfort that can have a positive impact on their recovery. But for observant Jewish visitors, the timing of their visit can be problematic if it conflicts with the Shabbat (Sabbath) or holidays, when they cannot drive or operate machinery. Mount Sinai Medical Center is the only hospital in Florida that takes the worry out of the timing by providing a Bikur Cholim room for observant Jewish families to spend the night at the hospital during the Sabbath or holidays. Bikur Cholim, which means, “visiting the sick” in Hebrew, encompasses a range of services for the sick, homebound or disabled. “Let’s say you have a loved one in the intensive care unit and you are here all day on a Friday,” said Rabbi Simeon Schreiber, senior hospital chaplain. “The Sabbath begins 18 minutes before sundown on Friday evening, and if you are still here, you will not be able to drive. We can arrange for you

to use the Bkiur Cholim room and sleep over on Friday evening and Saturday, as well.” Although the hospital has had the Bikur Cholim room on its campus for years, the room has recently been renovated. Rabbi Schreiber, who spearheaded a fundraising campaign to support the renovation, presided over a ceremony to unveil the space in October. Approximately 50 people attended, including contributors and Charlene Welker, Mount Sinai’s senior vice president for network development. “We are grateful to Rabbi Schreiber and everyone who contributed funds to renovate this room and make it more comfortable for our visitors,” Welker said. More of a studio apartment, Mount Sinai’s Bikur Cholim room includes twin beds, a kitchenette stocked with kosher snacks, a dining area and full bath. Although there is no fee to use the room, donations are accepted. For more information, call the hospital’s Volunteer Office at 305-674-2080.

Warren Henry Auto Group receives “100 Best Dealerships To Work For” Award Warren Henry Auto Group, South Florida’s premier Auto Group, is pleased to announce that four of its dealerships have received prestigious awards within Automotive News’ “100 Best Dealership To Work For” program. Warren Henry Auto Group secured three of the top 10 awards: Warren Henry Jaguar and Warren Henry Volvo took the number two and number three spots respectively, while Warren Henry Infiniti secured the number eight spot (up from number 88 last year) and Land Rover South Dade ranked number 53. Selection criteria included working conditions, benefits, professional development opportunities and work-life balance. “Not only is it such an honor to receive this distinction for the Warren Henry Auto Group brand, it is also a testament to our team to be recognized as one of the country’s leading automotive groups,” said Warren Henry Zinn, President and CEO of Warren Henry Auto Group. The Automotive News “Best Dealerships

to Work For" program is a national program managed by the Best Companies Group. This survey and recognition program is dedicated to finding and recognizing the 100 best dealerships out of 18,000 in the United States. Each company must complete an employer benefits and policies questionnaire and each employee must complete a confidential employee engagement and satisfaction survey which consists of approximately 72 statements that employees respond to on a five-point agreement scale. The survey can either be filled out online or by paper survey. “Our goal is to provide the members of our team an environment that encourages them to be their best, which makes for great customer service and also promotes a degree of longevity and loyalty,” adds Zinn. “The average tenure of a Warren Henry Auto Group employee is approximately 16 years.” For more information about the “Best Dealerships to Work For" program, visit www.bestdealershipstoworkfor.com. Miami is the Place to be

Few things are certain in life, however taxes, death and the fact that Miami is ‘the place to be’ are sure things! Miami’s hotness no longer comes exclusively from its eterPatricia Rotsztain, nal summer, but is Director of Operations, now fueled by the Decorus Realty world’s need for both personal and economic safety. With over 170 new construction projects coming to fruition, the strength of the real estate market is shining bright- one of the reasons the city is becoming a hot destination for domestic and international businesses. With all of the foreign investments transacting, some question the solidity and substance of this new boom, however there is much more fueling Miami’s market than affluent Latin Americans needing to park their money. With the expansion of the Panama Canal and construction of a new tunnel leading from the port to 395, not only will it give access to highways in less than 4 minutes, in addition to Miami being the cruise capital of the world, it will also be the first cargo and commercial port in the world ranking higher than Hong Kong. Another highlight to Miami is the fact that Florida does not charge tax on commercial leases and salaries. Expenses here are much more competitive than other cities, which will persuade more companies to choose Miami as their operational headquarters,

bringing more need for housing and warehouse space, which equal more jobs and a vibrant economy. The Miami Beach Convention Center also has a master plan of renovation, with a public and private investment of $1.3 billion. The project will include 500,000 + ft. of exhibit halls, plus 130,000 ft. of convertible space; 200,000 ft. of outdoor event space; an 800 room hotel; 29 acres of parks; parking for over 1,000 cars; and 70,000 ft. of restaurants and retail space, which will create 10,000 construction jobs and another 1,600 jobs will be created by increased Convention guests. The Civic Center, currently known as the Health District, is also undertaking a phenomenal expansion that will have an economic impact of 39,000 employees, creating 60,000 indirect jobs. This joint venture with the Univ. of Miami, known as Life Science Park, will include a cutting-edge medical town with a stem cell institute, diabetes research, cancer center, genomics, etc. These hospitals and new health facilities will demand more housing for employees and visitors, as well as flex space to host all of the bio-technology companies that will provide services and research. Again, more jobs will be created, more spending will occur, more money will be available, more real estate will be in demand, which again will drive up the real estate market. With all of the expansions and renovations taking over Miami, it’s no wonder why domestic and international developers, buyers and companies alike are flocking to this community.

2014 Cadillac CTS Sedan challenges the world’s best Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Cadillac’s all-new 2014 CTS sedan is just one honey of an automobile and the fact that Motor Trend magazine has named it “Car of the Year” only serves to underline my appreciation for it. The Cadillac brass has made no secret that the CTS is intended to go head to head with the likes of BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi, and this time Caddy intends to come out on top. This third-generation CTS sedan is based on the high-performing rear-drive architecture of the award-winning ATS sport sedan, moving Cadillac into the of midsize luxury class. It comes in as the segment’s lightest car and offers superbly agile driving dynamics. There’s a broad range of powertrains to choose from, including the all-new Cadillac Twin-Turbo V-6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission combination in the new CTS Vsport. It is the first twin-turbocharged engine ever offered by Cadillac and is the brand’s first eight-speed automatic.

The Twin-Turbo has 420 hp and 430 poundfeet of torque, making it the most powerdense six-cylinder engine in the segment. A pair of smaller turbochargers helps provide more immediate power on demand, with 90 percent of peak torque available from 2,500 rpm to 5,500 rpm. That gives the engine a broad torque curve and helps the CTS Vsport reach 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds. The 2014 CTS also is available with a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter 321 hp V-6 also matched with the new paddle-shift eightspeed automatic in rear-wheel-drive models (or six-speed automatic with all-wheel drive) and a 2.0-liter, 272 hp turbocharged engine paired with a six-speed automatic. The new CTS sedan has a longer, lower and more athletic-looking proportion and evolves Cadillac’s Art & Science design philosophy. With five inches more in length, including a 1.2-inch longer wheelbase, the roofline and cowl — the base of the windshield — are about an inch lower. Yet, the CTS sedan has a lower curb weight than the earlier model and weighs about 200 pounds less than its closest competitor. Lightweight features, including Cadillac’s first aluminum door structures, contribute to the lower weight and a 50/50 weight balance. And Magnetic Ride Control is available for the

New Cadillac CTS Sedan is longer and lower, with a wider grille and LED light guides for a technologically advanced look.

first time on CTS on base models. Cadillac’s shield grille and signature vertical lighting elements — including LED front signature lighting detail — evolve on the CTS. The grille is wider, with a more detailed texture, while the headlights flow up with the hood line, incorporating LED light guides for a technologically advanced appearance.
