Artists, architects, writers and artisans nurtured Pasadena as the West Coast hub of the Arts and Crafts movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At the same time, astronomers found the night sky in the local mountains perfect for viewing stars and planets and built the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Vacationing Midwesterners found Pasadena’s climate to be ideal. Community pride led to the design and construction of an unparalleled Beaux Arts civic center. After World War II, Pasadena developed as a center of commerce and industry. At the same time, Pasadena became a shopping destination with department stores complementing local retailers. In the mid-1940s, Pasadena saw the completion of the Arroyo Seco Parkway (now the Pasadena Freeway) to downtown Los Angeles, the first -freeway in Southern California. As Pasadena expanded into a suburban community, the population blossomed to more than 100,000 people. In the 1970s, aided by easy access to freeways, Pasadena became headquarters for multi-national corporations such as Parsons and Kaiser Permanente. Technology companies such as Cogent, Guidance Software, Kinemetrics, Honeybee Robotics and others find proximity to Caltech and Jet Propulsion Laboratory to be a tremendous asset in the 21st century.

In Pasadena, a visitor can experience everything a large city has to offer in a comfortable, safe, engaging and active small city environment. Vibrant shopping and entertainment districts, world-class performing arts venues and museums, rollicking music clubs and a full range of eclectic, cutting edge and traditional restaurants make Pasadena a unique destination for visitors and locals alike. Pasadena routinely shows up as the location for everything from movies and television to commercials and print advertisements. Pasadena City Hall has doubled for foreign capitals, statehouses, schools and courthouses, and recently as Pawnee City Hall in Parks and Recreation. Pasadena is also home to a wide diversity of activities and events, from monthly swap meets at the Rose Bowl and Pasadena City College to professional bicycling races and an annual half marathon. The UCLA Bruins play their home football games in the Rose Bowl. Outdoor oriented visitors can hike, bike or camp in the expansive wilderness of the nearby San Gabriel Mountains, visit nearby lakes and beaches or enjoy recreational opportunities in local parks. Easily accessible recreation and sports venues include historic Brookside Golf Club and La Canada Flintridge Country Club. Santa Anita Park in nearby Arcadia, one of the finest existing horse racing venues in the country, was the home track of Seabiscuit. artistic experiences. The Pasadena Civic Auditorium hosts the Distinguished Speaker Series, classical, jazz and contemporary music and theatrical productions in a grand, historic hall. Shoppers can browse downtown Pasadena’s unique shops. Book lovers can meander among the shelves at Vroman’s Bookstore, a recent Publishers Weekly honoree as best independent bookstore, or enjoy the restored historic Pasadena Public Library. In the early 20th century, the first Busch Gardens was opened on the family’s Pasadena estate. In 1924, teenaged Lionel Sternberger first served a cheeseburger at The Rite Spot in Pasadena. Culinary innovation continues at restaurants throughout our city. You can decide for yourself whether Pie ‘n Burger, Rounds Premium Burgers, The Counter, Slater’s 50/50, Dog Haus, Bachi or Umami Burger serves your favorite during Cheeseburger Week each January. Stone Brewing tasting room in Pasadena joins local gastropub Kings Row and Dog Haus in serving brews made locally and around the world. Chamber member The Ice House, the first comedy club in the country, continues to amuse and entertain. Michael Jackson first performed his “moon dance” on the stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The first -professional go-kart race was held in the Rose Bowl parking lots. The Rose Bowl is also the only venue to host the Super Bowl, World Cup soccer championship, Olympic soccer final, Women’s World Cup and college football national championship game. Opened in the 1880s as a technical school, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has been home to 31 Nobel Prize awardees. Albert Einstein made three long-term visits in the 1930s and Stephen Hawking still lectures at Caltech. In 1936, Caltech’s “rocket boys,” Frank Malina, Jack Parsons and Ed Forman, successfully launched a self-built rocket near the current home of Jet Propulsion Laboratory whose missions explore the far reaches of space. Art Center College of Design is among the leading schools for fine art, commercial art and design in the nation. Fuller Theological Seminary graduates ministers who work throughout the world and Pacific Oaks College continues to train excellent educators. In 2013, Innovate Pasadena was founded to promote Pasadena as a technology and innovation hub.
